00:00:00 --> 00:00:26 Today, this will be the greatest night of our lives because we are in studio in a podcast studio. Yay. This is CCTV, the nonstop pop show where we provide our unfiltered, honest opinions on global pop music. We just binged the Take That Netflix documentary together and watched the Circus live DVD as well. So it's time for our very first episode about the legendary boy band.
00:00:29 --> 00:00:51 Yes, take that. I love them so much. So we're going to talk about The Circus and The Circus is Take That's fifth studio album released in December 2008 during the group's second major era post reunion. The album debuted at number one on the UK's album's heart and was the second best album of 2008 in the UK, shifting over 1.5 million copies in the territory.
00:00:51 --> 00:01:08 The record's overarching concept taps into performance, spectacle, emotional vulnerability, and the pressures of fame, using the circus as a metaphor, as a thematic anchor throughout its song and visuals. Ironically, the album was released the same day as Britney Spears' circus album.
00:01:08 --> 00:01:37 Ooh. Yes. And following the album release, Take That launched, Take That presents The Circus Live in 2009, their biggest concert run to date at the time. And it was a stadium tour that became one of the fastest selling in UK history. And 17 years later, Take That are reviving The Circus Live as a major stadium tour this summer in 2026. So we will now dive into the production, vocals, visuals, performances of each song, and then drop our individual ratings. Yeah.
00:01:37 --> 00:01:41 But viewer discretion is advised. Your fave will be criticized.
00:01:42 --> 00:02:09 Before we get into the album, let's talk about this album cover. What do you think? You know, I mean, we are here dressed in our blue and white circus colors. So it's safe to say I think we like the album cover. I think the color blue is very bright. I love the clouds. I love that the members are on the tightrope kind of, you know, performing, you know, to whatever audience. Who knows? But I like it. I think it's really something special. It's like it's what was their comeback album?
00:02:10 --> 00:02:36 Beautiful world. Beautiful world. They were on the land. It was yellow. It was kind of like they were just fighting against the wind. It looked like the Patience music video, right? So it looks very just like moody. This looks hopeful. And I like that. Yes. Also, though, there's something interesting about it because obviously the concept of the album is kind of how life can be like a circus because you're performing. So I kind of like that they're just in regular everyday clothes. Right. Yeah. Yes. More relatable. Completely. Yeah.
00:02:36 --> 00:03:02 Okay, so let's get into the album. The first song is The Garden, done by John Shanks and all four members of Take That, Gary Howard, Jason and Mark. And this song was released as the third single from the album in March 2009, just in Europe, because the UK got up all night. And all the members of Take That share the lead vocals of this track, which is quite rare for them. Yes. This is the life we've been given.
00:03:04 --> 00:03:16 I think it's a good way to kick off the album. And I'm going to start this critique with one thing. I am a Mark Owens stan. I'm a stan. I think people are weird.
00:03:17 --> 00:03:38 I don't know what it is. Like before, I knew that he was more than a cutie patootie with a crop top in the Relight My Fire music video. I was like, oh, I like this guy's voice. Something about him is just interesting. So I think when we watched the circus tour for like the first time. Yeah. Because we both saw Better Man. Shout out to Better Man. Shout out to Better Man. But...
00:03:38 --> 00:03:55 When I saw the tour, I was like, hey, hang on. What's going on? They're all singing. The song is really interesting. I just wasn't β we weren't as into them as we are now. Yes. So I was like, oh, what's this? But, yeah, no, I think he's gotten a lot better in terms of his vocal, like β
00:03:55 --> 00:04:18 strength power i mean if you think about when he went solo and then how many years later in 2008 we're like here's an album he sounds so much better and i love that the lyrics paint like this beautiful picture um the fisherman the stranger on the hill that's speaking i think we've all especially if you live in new york the end times are coming the end like we all see those people so like instantly my mind went to the light oh
00:04:18 --> 00:04:47 apocalyptic speakers yes um and i think that is like a testament to the song because like all this chaos is going on but like there's this one oasis this one safe place and it's the garden um and shout out to howard okay howard went from break dancing and spinning belting his face off yes yeah his harmonies hold them down like his head voice he floats really well but then when he proclaims everyone everyone i'm like with the marching yes yes
00:04:47 --> 00:05:02 And I love that the song actually changed the structure. I didn't realize how long the song was because it is so dynamic. And I appreciate that. But yes, I love the lyrics. Like, we're just miracles of matter. So come on, let me love you. Oh, my. A man who yearns is a man who yearns. Oh, Lord.
00:05:04 --> 00:05:31 She's going to work that into every episode. Because it's so true. I'm a romantic. What can I say? Like, it does nothing else matters. So like, at least let's love each other. And I'm like, oh my God, this is the life we've been given. I love, I've been singing these lyrics for two weeks. I'm not sure about you, but I think that this is like really good. You don't want to take anything for granted. You know, the song's about that, you know? Yes. Like, so I want to invite Chris to give me a hug. Come on. Here you go.
00:05:32 --> 00:05:55 Okay, before I talk about the song, so John Shanks is the main producer on this album. He is a name we've heard before on this show because he's done some of my favorite music ever. Kelly Clarson's Breakaway being one of the big ones, but he's also worked with The Chores and Michelle Branch. Now that you're mentioning it, yeah. He does the perfect kind of pop rock thing.
00:05:56 --> 00:06:24 That's what I like about this. And he was a great choice for this. He's awesome. So shout out to Mr. John Shanks. You have provided a lot of joy for my life. For sure. Oh, I can't listen to myself. And I guess we just keep discovering more stuff from him, too. Because I did not listen to this album. Like, yes, I watched the tour. But it didn't... You know, yeah, like you said, we weren't like... A huge fan. In it yet. But now, following this Netflix doc, I think we're... We're in it. We're in it. Yeah, we'll take that fan. We'll take that fan. Yeah. We'll take those.
00:06:24 --> 00:06:51 Take those. Yes. The takers. Yes. The garden. Beautiful way to start the album. The whole instrumental with that orchestra is so beautiful. It gets super epic. The whole build is just very satisfying. And it's just very cinematic. I think if you have a name like the circus for the album, you automatically have a visual in mind. So this is a really nice way to start. And it feels very spiritual. Yeah.
00:06:51 --> 00:07:10 Oh my God. Yes. Yeah. Oh my God. Yes. I really do feel that way too. Yeah. About it. Of course, though, the tour visual is what comes to mind whenever I hear the song. It's impossible to separate this elephant from this song. Yes. The elephant with the girl. Hang on. Wait. Yeah. She's like.
00:07:11 --> 00:07:21 crazy doing it i mean her neck strength her core shout out to circ people like oh my gosh i wonder if she's coming back
00:07:22 --> 00:07:46 She's probably like... Yeah, she might. She probably can't do that anymore. He's my protege, my child. I do wonder how they're going to update this elephant now. Because, you know, that tour was like... Is this 15 years? Is this a stadium? It's in the stadiums again. Oh, my God. Wow. Yeah. But you know they're going to... With all the new technology, like how... It was already so epic. Yeah, up the ante now. How are they going to do it now? Oh, my God. Do I need to fly there for this tour? No.
00:07:46 --> 00:08:00 I mean, I need to Chris it's take that. Okay. Listen, we've flown together. You've flown many times. We have for shows. Yeah. But like, it's take that. I was thinking, I was like, Hmm. So I like come out of like broke girl retirement and like work my book.
00:08:00 --> 00:08:22 This is the life we've been giving. Let's start living. Hey. Okay. So after this, we're going to do some travel planning. Right? Yes. Anyway, this is a very rare moment in the Take That discography where all of them get lead vocals. You didn't mention some of them. Jason, obviously, he rarely gets to sing. Yes. So having him get a verse here.
00:08:22 --> 00:08:38 Beautiful. Yeah, about the crazy man. He sounds so, like, delicate. He does. And, like, his voice is, like, always, like, about to break. Yeah. And it just works really well in a song like this. Yes. What did you think of the music video? Oh. Okay. Sorry. Oop. That reaction is not... Yeah. Oh.
00:08:38 --> 00:09:07 What I will say, y'all look so handsome. You look so handsome. Muy guapo. But here's the thing. Beside the handsomeness, it was just very colorless. And you know that Powerpuff Girl episode? Like, love makes the world go round. Because the clown took all their color. Yes. I was expecting... I thought color was going to seep in slowly as well. Or I thought they would at least end up with everyone being transported to the garden. Yes, everyone. Why was it so concrete? Yeah.
00:09:07 --> 00:09:28 It just didn't match the song. Whoever directed it was like, I hear millions of people. I'm thinking cityscape and just stayed there. Like I was reading and I don't know if this was true because, you know, all the fans stuff. But like they I did read something that said the band was not happy with how this video turned out. So tell us. Tell us. Yeah. That was the truth. Just watch the live. Yes. Version. Honestly, that's all I did. I watched it once. I was like, this is it. Oh, yeah.
00:09:30 --> 00:09:51 Okay, so what do you rate this one? Okay, so I'm starting off really strong. Maybe too strong. Who knows? But I'm going to give this one... I'm going to give it a 10. Oh. I know, really strong. But I really like this song. Yeah. Like a lot. I get it. And it uses all their voices. Okay, I will do a nine. How dare you? We'll get there. We'll get there.
00:09:52 --> 00:10:04 All right, moving right along to Greatest Day. And this was done by John Shanks and all the members of Take That. And this is the lead single from the album release in November 2008, becoming the group's 11th number one single in the UK.
00:10:09 --> 00:10:30 The song enjoyed a resurgence in 2024 when it was prominently featured in the film Anora with a remix by Robin Schultz featuring Kalem Scott. And I actually watched Anora this morning. Just to see how this song was used. Yep. And? No other reason. And was it used in a gray way? It was okay. Like, I mean, okay, so here's the thing. Okay.
00:10:30 --> 00:10:46 No offense. Anytime you use a group from yesteryear. Yeah. Yes, honey. But they use it in the title screen when they were introducing Mikey Madison and she was dancing and gyrating. Sure. Yeah, yeah. And then they use it when the two characters got married.
00:10:47 --> 00:11:14 Oh. Yeah. So, I mean, honestly, a normal is kind of like Pretty Woman, but for like Gen Zers. Maybe Gen Alpha. I was not interested. Oh. But good for Take That for getting some coin from this. To be fair, the new remix is actually great. Yes, it is. I think it kind of updated with some more lyrics and some extra little harmonies here and there. Yeah. So it made it feel fresh. Yeah, like a full brand new version. Like not just a pure remix. It was very euphoric, I would say, this version. It felt very EDM-like.
00:11:14 --> 00:11:37 Yes, it kind of takes away some of the melancholy that's in the main version. Like, that's what I found most interesting about this song, because obviously the whole concept of, you know, there's a feeling of hope, right? It's like this day could be the greatest day in your life. And but then it also sounds very urgent. Oh, yeah. And it's like, oh, but if you don't like seize the moment, it's over. Yes.
00:11:38 --> 00:12:06 you know, so there was a yeah, that whole sense of like missed opportunity is there too, so that whole feeling is very interesting for me yeah, super catchy I totally understand why it was a huge hit it's made to be sung along with it goes off live every time so yeah, there's something super epic about it and kind of timeless about it so I understand why it was the lead single and why it continues to like be such a big staple for them
00:12:06 --> 00:12:27 Right. Yeah. I think for this song, it's definitely like stadium pop. It's meant to be big. It's meant to be like this bold thing. Like, let me forget. I'm sitting there singing The Garden in my head right now. Okay, so my 10 was justified because I'm still singing The Garden in my head. But I feel like with Gary, he led most of the song with the harmonies here and there. But he has such a good placement. Like, I mean...
00:12:28 --> 00:12:52 the song is in good good hands or good throat sorry yeah it's in good hands i'll just say that but it's in good lips yeah i'll say that something yes i mean gary's voice is i mean he's known as one of the best like boy band voices i would say yeah i mean yeah because it's it's it's very pure yes really recognizable tone yeah it's very articulate yes i'm like oh
00:12:52 --> 00:13:02 his oath make me laugh oh and it's aged beautifully yes i will give him that for all my teasing yes hang on real quick how does the greatest go
00:13:03 --> 00:13:28 This could be. Oh, yeah. OK, there you go. Oh, today, this could be the greatest day of our lives. Yes. He's good placement, but he sounds very like he sounds like he has papa vibes, very like dad vibes, but like very talented dad world. It's not a bad thing, but I believe him. Something about him is just so sincere in his delivery. And I think that is really important. He commands.
00:13:29 --> 00:13:49 the song and it's undeniable. Like again, the, Oh, stay close to me. He sounds like a youth pastor. Listen, he could, he could be a good youth pastor, but it's just so funny. But I like that. I think the song builds really nicely because like by the time the second chorus comes around, energy is really high. And I love that the harmonies, um, hold on.
00:13:49 --> 00:14:09 And the world comes alive. Yeah. So I like those moments because I think about the crowd singing. Like when I'm writing songs and it's meant to be kind of like big and fun, I think like, okay, could people sing this back to me? And this is something that I would sing on. Hold on. Yes. You know, the lights, the, you know, they take the music away and like everything falls away. Hold on. The song is very like,
00:14:10 --> 00:14:27 I'm not juicy, but it's just full of moments. And even the Abbey Road version, it's just like, oh, yes. So, yeah, I think this song, even though there's only one vocal on it, I think it's it's great. And then the song is romantic. I think there's a lot of love throughout this album. Definitely. Which I appreciate. Yeah. Right up my alley. So, yeah, I like this one.
00:14:27 --> 00:14:56 What did you think of the music video? Oh. Filmed in LA. Oh, yes. You know, it was quite yellow. It was very yellow. I have that in my notes, too. That California filter. Yeah. Because even on Instagram, you know, like, it's always that super yellow orange situation. Yeah, that's very, um, you know what's funny? It's giving very much, like, an elder millennial filter. You're right. Yeah. Yeah. Sorry. Because I think it's supposed to emulate, um. Warmth?
00:14:57 --> 00:15:26 Yeah, warmth and also just like the glow. Oh, the golden hour. Yeah, golden hour glow. And all the bokeh, the bokeh bugs, the beetle, the fireflies. Okay, I thought something big was going to happen when... Yeah. When all the... Because I was like, oh, like all this glitter, all these sparkles are heading towards them and then nothing really happens. Really happens. Like I thought they would like start flying. No. Or like the helicopter would come and pick them up somewhere. Yeah. Joke's on you. They said glitter for nothing. Yeah, not my favorite video. Yeah, no.
00:15:27 --> 00:15:42 I mean, at least the garden, you like, okay, yeah, moody. But this one, I mean, they look like they were just having a good time on the roof, you know? Sure. Mark with his Bruno Mars hat. My other thing is, like, this is the lead single. Yeah. It's the circus. Yeah. So it just felt...
00:15:43 --> 00:16:06 Like not as story. There was no story. Like there was just like. There was no day that was building up to greatness. No. We'll get the circus related visuals later on. Yeah. I guess. But I go with you. And then I do have to shout out the Brits performance. Did you watch it? Oh my goodness. The whole UFO situation. With them in the glasses. More. And the slicked back hair. More exciting than the actual video. Yes. Because what?
00:16:06 --> 00:16:35 Epic. I think that was the same Brits that Girls Aloud performed, too. Promise. Yeah. Yeah. See? Look at me. I'm learning. Okay, we'll talk about that one day. But yes, we do talk about a lot of Brit pop on our show. So if you're new here, hello. Yes. Okay, so I will give this one a nine. This is my nine. Okay. Yeah. Okay. Next is Hello, Done Again by John Shanks and the boys of Take That. But this time, Steve Robson also got involved. Another name that we know. Yes, this one I right off the bat. Yeah.
00:16:40 --> 00:16:52 Okay. Hello. What do you think? You know, hello, if I take that as a genre of pop, I didn't know I'd have like a strong fondness for. And I call it whimsy white man pop.
00:16:52 --> 00:17:14 whimsy white man pop like okay hear me out right you think it's not completely true like i i'm used to the whimsy white man pop or like whimsy white man songs i think singing in the rain um you know like you know the whole like i was trying to figure out like what you put in that category okay but i understand or like the ollie ollie merz kind of music ollie merz is a great example
00:17:14 --> 00:17:37 It's just happy-go-lucky, click your heels together. I like that because this song kind of fits. You know, it fits in. Yes. Hello, hello. You know, I just, you know, I like that. But I think it's time. People are going to want a whimsy white man playlist. Right. I should make a little crack. It's not me being like. And this would be a great opening track for that.
00:17:37 --> 00:18:07 Hello? Yeah. Hello? It's not a bad thing. We love a good bit of whimsy. You know what I'm saying? Like, it's cute. I do enjoy whimsy. I think that's also why I like Mark, too, because I look at him and I see smiles. I look at him and I think dimples. I just... Yes. Even in... We Light My Fire. I keep talking about it because he's wearing that crop top. Why is that man in the crop top? It doesn't matter. He was sitting there like my fire. Loving life. You know, huh? Yeah. Living his best life, you said? Yes, he was. Loving life. Yes. And the song is about loving life. And I love that because it's just like...
00:18:07 --> 00:18:19 I think he has a timbre of his voice that almost kind of sounds like an old man sometimes. Oh, very much so. I just run through, say hello. Yeah. Like, if you listen to Babe, he sounds like an old man in that too. Yeah.
00:18:22 --> 00:18:50 Again, can you imagine an older man, like Carl from Up, gave up on life, cause Ellie's gone. And he finds maybe a Helen. And he's like, I'm not gonna use the little boy Russell as like his reason, you know, fall in love again. That's weird. But like, he's like, I'm happy again. Like, you know, the birds are singing now. You know, like it's just- So I'm not saying that Mark is an old man, but he does have like something that feels very like- Lived. Yeah. Hello. Hello.
00:18:51 --> 00:19:16 And I appreciate that. And I think I like the sentiment of the song. Like things can get mundane. Like, yeah, so prices of the housing has lowered. Great. Woo-hoo. But there's no point in having a house if I can't share it with someone. You know, so I like that. And I think that's the whole vibe of the song. I do appreciate it. It's very sweet. And I think the song is about like, instead of dying on the hill, kind of find a new perspective on top of it. Okay. Yeah. Yes.
00:19:16 --> 00:19:45 I like this one. There's a bounciness to it, which I guess is the whimsy that you're talking about, but it almost makes it feel kind of innocent too. Yeah. So while he sounds like could be like an older man, that's like refinding the joy in his life. It also feels a little, yeah. Like kind of innocent, which is, yeah, that's interesting. Yeah. Mark sounds great. Like he, he kind of always sounds like he's singing with a smile. Uh huh. So there's like a natural warmth and a joy to his voice. Yeah.
00:19:47 --> 00:20:17 when they're supposed to be, but then he emotes really well. Like when we get to the sadder songs, he's like, it's like his heart is just like breaking while he's singing. It's like amazing. Yes, we got it. Yeah, I like the way the lyrics are written. Like the verses are what you were saying, like, oh yeah, like life is kind of boring. And the chorus is like, oh, but now that I have met you, it's like, oh, like life is fun again. And the harmony arrangement in this is so good. I'm kind of sad this wasn't in the Abbey Road set that they did.
00:20:17 --> 00:20:26 Because our harmonies actually, and the whole vocal arrangement of all the backing vocals is super intricate, actually. So that was awesome. But we do get a good tour performance. Yeah.
00:20:26 --> 00:20:54 Yes. It's so cute. I love the steps that they walk up on. Oh yeah, the ladder. Yeah, the ladder. So, the ladder. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I think that was super cute. I think when we first watched the tour, we both were like, oh, this is kind of cute. Yeah, because that was the first part where there was staging, right? Because they started off so like, we're just on this little B stage, my face happening. Right. And then all these dancers come out. It's like a whole thing. I loved all the props, like the newspaper props and the little TV things come out of the newspapers. Yes, yes. Yeah, there's so much going on, but it's great.
00:20:54 --> 00:21:23 You know, true. But I think it was like all like contained chaos. Yes. And it was like planned chaos. That's the way planned. So like everyone knew exactly where they were supposed to go, you know? Shout out to the crowd. Like even they like run out into the crowd and even shake people's hands. But then they all make it back up to that ladder. Hello. At the same time, like it's really well rehearsed. Hit your cues. Your marks. On your marks. Okay. So what do you rate this one? Okay. This one for me. Ooh, it's so tough. I am willing to bump it up a little bit. So I'll give it an 8.5.
00:21:23 --> 00:21:50 I also have it as an 8.5. All right. Moving right along to Set It All. And this was done by John Shanks, Steve Robson, and the members of Take That. Take That. Yes. That sounds kind of questionable because it sounds like, you know, drugas. Out of all, though. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, we talk a lot about, you know, every group has those songs. Self-referential. The self-referential songs. Yeah, yeah.
00:21:50 --> 00:22:14 This one's not great, though. Come on, come on, come on, take that and party. And party. It sounds sus. I did not think about it that way. Come on, take that and party, you know? Love the name, though. Yeah. But yes, said it all. Yes, so this was released as the fourth single from the album in June 2009, peaking at number nine in the UK singles chart. Yeah. Set it all.
00:22:18 --> 00:22:30 And this time we do get a very theatrical music video. Yes, I'm smiling. I think of the video. Okay, we'll get there. Let's talk about the song first. I love this song. Yeah. You know I love a great boy band ballad. Yeah.
00:22:32 --> 00:22:55 I love a good girl group ballad as well. But this one is so good. It's so good. It's so sad. Yes. I should be smiling. I'm smiling so much because I like this song. Because you like the song. Yeah, I get it. Yeah, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I
00:22:55 --> 00:23:10 It is the dancing in the club. Or dancing... Crying in the club. Crying in the club. Yes, I love crying in the club. But yes, Gary's voice is so perfect here. Again, he has such a beautiful tone. And he just emotes so effortlessly. And his transitions...
00:23:10 --> 00:23:35 Yeah. Yeah. His placement is amazing. He has great placement. Like it's so smooth. His ear is great. Yeah. And his pitch as well. Like in all the live performances, he's like exactly on it. It's amazing. And then Mark gets the bridge. And this is kind of what I was referring to before. He is so delicate when he sings softly. And then when he belts, it's literally like his heart is breaking while it's happening. Yeah.
00:23:35 --> 00:23:57 I love when man cries. Yeah. And then the harmony arrangement for this too. Yes. So full, especially in that second verse as well with all the layering. Oh, I just think this, the whole melody and the lyrics are just so beautiful. Yeah. I love the song. Yeah. Me too. I'm, I'm, I'm a girly who, uh, like a little bit of closure. Okay. Um, but yeah, CCTV crew, Chris, I have something to tell you. Oh.
00:23:57 --> 00:24:21 Um, yeah, yeah, you don't know this. He really doesn't know guys. This is a surprise. Um, but yeah, I've experienced a set at all moment in my life. I mean, I'm pretty much a kind of person. I like to get everything off of my chest. I mean, you've watched the show or if you're new here, I'm very much like energy, energy, energy. So if I have energy that's trapped, if I have something I need to say, I don't get to say it, I'll ruminate and think about it and talk to myself. Like, like, like, do you do that? Or is it just me?
00:24:21 --> 00:24:47 Yeah. Okay, great. Okay. I think most people do that. Well, I think so. I think people ruminate sometimes. But for me, I feel like I need to say it even if I don't ever get a response. And that being said, the last guy I was seeing, Chris, that you know about, I actually wrote him a letter. 14 pages. Wow. Yeah. You're verbose. Okay. I am. But hear me out, everyone. Hear me out.
00:24:48 --> 00:25:18 Hear me out. I'm listening. Everyone. Yeah. So I usually write letters to people in general. I had a snail mail, friendships, you know, we live far away. Just kind of like updates. Cause sometimes you don't want to text everything. Right. Or phone calls. It was just something fun to do. I'm a snail mail kind of girl. Yeah. If we're not friends anymore, I'm like, Hey, what's going on? I'm communicative like that, you know? So yeah, I think every person that I've like ended things with friendship wise or romantic wise, I've said something, but this is the longest I've ever actually said something to something I was ending. And I think,
00:25:18 --> 00:25:47 I get it with the song specifically. Because it is about closure. And like, what else can you say? All the tears that you've cried. But yeah, that's the whole thing. Like, if you're that person that like, send a text. If you're going to send it, just send it. But remember why you're sending it. If you're going to say something, remember why you're saying it. It's not because you want to save the relationship. It's because you want to process. And unfortunately or fortunately, if you're dating a writer, everything's copy. So, I mean, like, there will be a song out of this. But yeah, I think I love the lyrics. Like...
00:25:47 --> 00:26:06 So the first verse is a little bit more melancholic. I mean, the whole song's melancholic, but the first verse feels very hopeless, and the second one feels a little bit more optimistic. It's about healing. And I do believe that when Gary's, like, saying there's nothing left to break that's not already broken, you already know that things are over. But again, it's just...
00:26:06 --> 00:26:32 Just want to get it all out the way. Howard and Jason carry those harmonies. Okay? Because I put that in my nose. I was like, I have to say that. But I think the way that the harmonies were arranged as well makes the song feel reflective and mournful. So you can feel both things can be true at the same time. You can be like, I'm glad that's over. But like, why is it over? I know why it's over. But still, so you can go back and forth. And I think the song does a good job of doing that. Because it's not super sad and like pathetic. It's almost just like...
00:26:32 --> 00:27:01 catharsis especially when you hit mark's part so i like this song a lot yes a lot yes and the abbey road version too where they started with the bridge that may be the version for me i don't think yeah oh my gosh okay the music video so now we see the boys at the circus that one oh your face very sad yeah you know
00:27:02 --> 00:27:18 There is something to be said about having to put on and still perform when your heart's breaking. And a clown is like the ultimate epitome of that because you have to put the makeup on. It's very rare that you see a clown. That's really sad. Unless you think about like a hobo clown or a hobo clown. Oh, yeah, girl.
00:27:21 --> 00:27:45 I think like in the early 1900s, there was a man who used to walk around. His name was Willie something. He used to leave his scruff on. So the whole thing was he had a white mouth, sad clown. He was a hobo clown. It wasn't cute. No, that doesn't sound great. But it's part of clown history. So sorry to the clowns. But yeah, clowns have to perform. And even me, I think after everything had happened with the separation with the guy, I got into a crack that night too, y'all.
00:27:45 --> 00:27:59 so yeah it was whack that same weekend or that yeah that same weekend we filmed like a cctv episode and i was like no this is the only thing i have left i'm holding on by everything we can totally do the episode and you're like are you sure girl
00:28:00 --> 00:28:22 And you were like, oh, write a song about it. I was like, how am I supposed to write a song about it? But I've written songs. Yeah. CCTV, I was able to kind of keep doing things. And it stayed in the back of my mind. I kind of throw notes in here and there in terms of like my heart. But you got to work through it. And the video is very much like that. They're still performing. Yes. They're still like showing up. They're looking at each other almost like as they're like, like,
00:28:22 --> 00:28:47 not human as well because there's a little bit of a dissociation too that's what jason jason did not want to act if you guys watch the netflix documentary jason was like i tried it i hated it but honey you're so good so good at it and i like what they did on tour with it but we're going to talk about that later with the clown makeup yeah yeah that whole circus segment from start to finish was just brilliant oh now i want to watch the show again yeah we're going oh yeah
00:28:49 --> 00:29:03 Okay, so this one is a clear 10 for me. Yeah, if you couldn't tell, yes, for me too. Oh, man. Okay, next rat, Julie. Julie. Julie. Done by John Shanks, Steve Robson, and the four boys of Take That.
00:29:08 --> 00:29:19 Yes. So this song was not on the tour. Oh, no. But they did perform at Abbey Road. They did do it at the little TV special that they did for the album. So it's still got some shine. Yeah.
00:29:20 --> 00:29:39 Pun intended. So what do you think? That's why I love Mark. We're stans now. We know all the back catalog already. Yeah, we are actually. And also, I know he's married. I'm not talking about like Mark the man. I'm talking about Mark Owen the singer. Like, love him. I'm very clear about that. We don't play...
00:29:39 --> 00:30:05 No, we don't do that here. But yes, it seems like Babe has a name. It's Julie. And her name is Julie. Yeah. Because literally, it's like a kind of, this doesn't. Read totally romantic, though. No, it's not. Yeah. It's more just like, hey, girl, what's going on? I'm like, wait, wait. It's, hey, Jude, don't make it bad. You know, it's like, you know, or is it sad? I'm not gonna lie, y'all. Bad is first. Sad happens later, right? Yeah. Yeah. I'm not, I'm not like. I'm so sorry if that's wrong.
00:30:06 --> 00:30:36 Y'all, I grew up with like Maze, Frankie Berlin, you know, because my parents, my parents were listening to the Beatles, you know, so sorry. But yes, if I sang the lyrics wrong. But Julie is meant to kind of have that vibe where it's like, it's not that bad. Turn to sad song, make it better. Yes. You know, sha la la la la la, I love you. Yes. You know, so I do appreciate that. But this feels almost also like a precursor to Shine as well, because it's like, girl, what's going on? It's time to shine. Like, if I were making a take that musical, I would totally...
00:30:36 --> 00:30:53 Oh, there is a Take That musical. Is there? Yeah, I think it went on tour in the UK. Did it? There's also, they made a movie out of it, but we couldn't, we can't rent it here in America. You know what? VPN. We're going to need to find this. I've tried. It's called Greatest Day.
00:30:53 --> 00:31:17 I've tried to find it before and failed. Okay. So, so VPNs to get a step, step, step your cookies up. We're trying to watch the movie. Oh man. But yeah, I love that. I think Julie is suffering. Um, and she forgot that the sun rises for her. And I love that. The sun comes out for you. I love that line for you. Um, you know, but it's not, it's not my favorite song. I have to say, I appreciate the production of it a little bit more. I would say.
00:31:17 --> 00:31:46 Classic pop rock situation. And I do like to perform it with the aerialist as an aerialist myself. I was like, girl, you better hold on to that lollipop. Yes. I love that Mark was just like singing to her as well. The staging was perfect for that. Yeah. I loved that. I will say this song also didn't do much for me when I was first listening to the album. But it actually grew on me as it kept coming in. And I was like, oh, I'm actually like looking forward to the song. I think the lyrics are just really, again, written really well. Yes. Yes.
00:31:46 --> 00:32:06 Like the concept of music actually being kind of the mechanism to heal Julie. Yeah. Right? And she's like going through a rough time. And like, shalala, like, it's just like, you just need to like sing it out. Yeah. Yeah. You know? So I kind of like, as a concept, I was like, oh. And then Mark, again, so warm. And reassuring in his tone. Yeah.
00:32:07 --> 00:32:33 And yeah, I think the production is great. It's like super epic. The rock drums, strings yet again here. So yeah, actually this, this kind of grew on me a lot. And I think that performances are really good. No, that's valid. I can understand the growth on you. I was, I do get that. I just think for me, I'm like, okay, it's okay. It's not terrible though. I don't, I didn't rank it really low. I would say that. There's nothing super low on this album. No. And we've done, y'all, I've given it a zero. No.
00:32:33 --> 00:32:59 find that episode um so yeah i originally had this at a seven but it has gone up to an eight oh okay okay that's valid that's valid i'm trying to think it's not a bad song i i see your eight i'll match you okay because i was thinking 7.5 but you're right i don't hate it no no i don't hate it okay because i can sing the song to you right now yeah i love you more i love you um
00:33:01 --> 00:33:12 Moving right along to the title track, The Circus. And this was done by John Shanks, Gary Howard, Jason M. Markov. Take that! And potty. Forever.
00:33:16 --> 00:33:41 All right. So the circus. Now I know all of them have written on this, but this is Gary solo. Yeah. Yeah. And honestly, I feel like the circus is a song that I can add to my list of foolish men that sing about their foolishness. If you like, if you guys know, if you guys know old soul, there is Smokey Robinson's, um,
00:33:41 --> 00:34:03 The Tears of a Clown. And then there's also The Miracles. No, not The Miracles, sorry. Blue Magics. So let the sideshow begin. Hurry, hurry. That one breaks your heart. Can't afford to pass it by. Guaranteed to make you cry. It's a good song. Okay. Because he's crying. He's like, dang, I let this girl. I messed up. And it's like, I'm a sideshow now because I'm a fool.
00:34:03 --> 00:34:28 So men being foolish, Tears of the Clown is the same thing. I did not, I mean, Tears of the Clown, you can kind of dance to it. It sounds whimsical and you listen to it. It's like, oh, you messed up. You see the smile on my face and it's like, yeah, yeah. No, I love when men talk about, I'm a clown. Eek, honk honk. You know, I love those songs. And this one goes right into there. I mean, if you want to throw Mr. Cellophane in there too, I guess, but his is more about like, no one pays attention to me. Not I didn't pay attention to the person
00:34:28 --> 00:34:51 that loves me um and i think this one has the welcome to the show kind of energy but then also therapy is in the basement if you need it like that's what that's what this feels like um and i do appreciate the whole therapies downstairs and to the left vibe of everything because you know you think of circus you think of like grandiose acting and
00:34:51 --> 00:35:04 and behaviors and people doing contortionisms and bending over backwards and, you're not thinking of a crying clown. And I do appreciate that he's admitting that his biggest mistake was not loving Julie and telling her that he loved her in the garden.
00:35:05 --> 00:35:23 You turn the whole album into its own musical. Yes. But I think about that. He's like, you know, I love you was too many words to say. And I personally heard that. I was like, what do you mean? For him at the time, it was almost too much to say. And I didn't realize, like, I should have just said that it would have been the easiest thing to do.
00:35:23 --> 00:35:40 Um, but yeah, I think that is, it's very poignant and I appreciate that. Um, so yeah, I think the song is just solid. He holds it on. He holds it down on his own really well. Yeah. I would have like, yeah, I would love to hear the other voices, but I just think he's very good. So it's just like, I accept this as what it is.
00:35:40 --> 00:36:06 It made it feel very intimate that it was just him. Yes. So I think that works. Because I was actually trying to imagine it. I was like, oh, if I like added some harmonies here, some like little ooze, you know, somewhere in there. But I was like, he really doesn't need it. It really doesn't. And then, you know, you do have like, what is love and stuff later on. So like you needed some, like you didn't want anything to be too similar, I think. You know, so I think it made sense for this to be a solo track. I love the effect that they put...
00:36:06 --> 00:36:25 on it as well. Oh my god, yeah. Because it has that kind of crackly kind of radio kind of thing going for it. Makes you feel more timeless in a way. Makes you feel more emotional as well, actually, for some reason. Yeah. Yeah, the strings are super beautiful here. Again, just all... They did the melancholy just so well. Yeah. Yeah.
00:36:25 --> 00:36:40 Like from the second that first line happens, like silence now. Oh my God. Because I've got something to say. It like commands your attention. Oh my God. Immediately. Yes. And every time the song comes on, I really just like stop whatever I'm doing. I'm like just listening to it, which is amazing. Yeah. And hard to do. Yeah.
00:36:40 --> 00:37:00 But yeah, I think this kind of spiraling kind of sad confession to an audience. Yeah. Like, it's very interesting, right? Because there's kind of like self-mockery in there. There's a lot of self-awareness in there. And all the lyrics like, oh, now you can applaud my best mistake. Yeah. Yeah.
00:37:00 --> 00:37:21 I don't know, just really paints a picture very well. So I just think as a just songwriting perspective, it's just so beautifully done. Totally. But yeah, it does make me think of, you know, when any public figures go through a breakup or just when something very vulnerable happens, like family affairs get leaked, you know, and all that stuff. Wedding dances. Yeah.
00:37:21 --> 00:37:33 And then it all just gets put on display And everyone has their own opinion Everyone wants to talk about it And this is very much reflective of that So yeah I love this song
00:37:34 --> 00:37:52 Yeah. Yeah. I go, what's the score now? Definitely a 10. Uh-oh. Yeah. You know what? It's like I said, it's that whole thing with the, you know, sideshow, Tears of a Clown. This goes right in there. Like, I effed up, but this is an effing good song, so it gets an effing 10. Oh, my gosh.
00:37:53 --> 00:38:16 Oh, man. Well, we're halfway through the album. Oh, we're already? Yeah. So if you're enjoying the episode so far, you can follow us everywhere at CCTV Pops. Come film your life at VizCast. Yes, VizCast.com. Let's go. Okay, next. We're at the Jason Solo song. Oh my God, this song. Yeah. Okay, this is How Did It Come To This? It's done by John Shanks, Jamie Norton, Ben Mark, and the four members of Take That.
00:39:17 --> 00:39:24 Yes. You like this one. Hang on. This song is so weird. In a good way? Okay.
00:39:26 --> 00:39:49 This song, like I said, it's super weird. How did it come to this is one of those songs that made me stop and go, what? Ooh, ooh. I was with my friend. She heard the schizophrenic line and the OCD line. She said, ooh. I said, ooh, girl, ooh. It was turning into a ooh moment. Because it was very shocking. I mean, he's like spiraling. Yeah. Yeah. More spiraling. Yeah.
00:39:49 --> 00:40:12 And it's interesting because it just sounds almost super bright as well. But this is, like I said, this is where the whimsy becomes schizophrenic, apparently. Sure. The whimsy has spiraled a little bit more. Now it's like, okay, wait, hang on. Have you guys ever seen the video of this counting clock? It's from the UK. Counting, counting, counting. He's talking about how life he's counting through life is.
00:40:12 --> 00:40:39 And he's counting about like his counting ABCs. He's counting. Like when you're a kid, everything's simple. You get older, you start counting your taxes, counting your money, counting how many kids you have. You keep counting, counting, counting until you die. Like literally there's a clock video. I forgot. I found it on Tumblr when I was perusing when I was a little bit younger. But literally this is that same vibe. It's like life is getting super overwhelming. And there's a lot of people who do have mental health disorders. Like I have a friend who,
00:40:39 --> 00:40:58 She's like, I might have BPD. I'm like, are you sure? She goes, yeah, I don't want to admit it, but I think I might. Because like the way I disassociate when things get really chaotic or the way I interact with things that were normal people interact with, it's just very different. And I was listening to the words in the song and I'm like, oh, she describes her experiences like that. I'm not going to put our whole business out there. So if I'm being vague, it's on purpose.
00:40:58 --> 00:41:24 um but yeah this this song is about anxiety as well in a nutshell it's like worrying about noises lights being perceived like i didn't say hi to you but you know more of a smiler it's like things like that those lyrics are very specific yes and i'm like oh oh my god that's that's relatable but then again it still sounds really bright um and i think this song has a good uh trajectory in terms of his storytelling because at the end he's like listen
00:41:24 --> 00:41:54 I may have all these things, but if you stay with me, things will be okay. And I think that's really important. I mean, as long as someone willing to listen to us, things don't feel as overwhelming. I mean, if you think about the gang at 100 Acre Wood, they still asked Eeyore to hang out, okay? He was depressed. Eeyore still went out with them. Don't leave your friends alone. And the song is very reflective of how did life come this way and how do we survive it? And I do like that.
00:41:54 --> 00:42:14 I think it's interesting, right? Because sometimes you do just need to vent. Yes. And that's kind of what this was. It's just like you're overloaded with everything going on in your life. You're trying to manage all the noise and the pressure and the complexity of life. And it's just like, I just need to say all this just to like get it out. So I find it kind of fun that it's kind of a chaotic song. Us last week.
00:42:15 --> 00:42:36 Yeah, us last week. I love that Jason actually gets this as his solo track, too. It's only the second one, right, of their whole discography. And then he leaves the group, you know, after Progress. So pretty soon after this. But his tone is actually very special. Like, especially with the way this was written, it's so conversational.
00:42:36 --> 00:42:51 Yes, and panicky too. Yeah. Yeah, right, right. And I think because he has that quality where it does kind of sound like it's going to break, that that really does come across well. Yeah. And also, this song is actually very hard to sing. It is. It is.
00:42:51 --> 00:43:10 There's like no moments to breathe in it. And it's high. And he has to transition as well. And so he's learned from Gary. He's like, he's doing a really good job here. You know what? Yes. Honestly, shout out to this whole group. Because I think when they were actually... This section of the tour, they were all playing instruments. Yes. To be a group that...
00:43:10 --> 00:43:29 You know, there's been controversy that I also kind of agree with in terms of like certain pop acts using like R&B and like, you know, soul sounds to kind of make their come up. I get it. There's a whole thing with that. But to sit there and come from just being the background dancer, like not even considering genre of music and style of like presentation coming from spinning on your head and like...
00:43:30 --> 00:43:55 to dance to now sitting there playing a guitar singing guitar you know all of them play an instrument and my man was on the bass go ahead um i love i love bass players but also i just like that he was on the bass as well but i think it's really impressive and he's still how did it come to this and you know backing him up so i think it's it was good it's solid it's a full circle moment for sure yes so yeah i i don't know modern life is overwhelming for everyone right so this is relatable
00:43:55 --> 00:44:19 Quick thing. Did you hear the Camden Town line? Some people were speculating that it's about Amy Winehouse. I did read that. How do you feel? I don't know. Could be a stretch. Maybe. I think it could be a stretch as well. Yeah. Yeah. But I was like, the Camden Town line, Amy Winehouse. Okay. Everyone gets stressed, though. So. Yes. Yeah. Yeah. All right. I give this one an 8.5. I'll give this one just an 8.
00:44:20 --> 00:44:40 All right. All night is next. All right. And this was done by John Shanks, Jamie Norton, Ben Mark, and Gary, Howard, Jason, and Mark of Take That. This was released as the second single from the album in March 2009, peaking at number 14 in the UK. Mm-hmm. Yeah.
00:44:45 --> 00:45:10 back to the whimsy yes this is very much a part two to hello for sure yeah i love this one though i feel like the first time i heard it i was like this is so much fun yeah this there's like a great head bopping quality to it this is one of those songs up all night is one of that like stomp clap pop that we all know yes like if you were really like tuned into like music around was it 10 years ago now the 2016 challenge now
00:45:10 --> 00:45:25 Like we think the Lumineers are like Mumford and Sons. In my notes, Mumford and Sons. Yeah. Like literally the indie folk vibe is strong. Yeah. The force is strong here. And shout out to Mark and Jason holding down the verses with the lead and the harmonies. I love how that sounds.
00:45:25 --> 00:45:47 And I think the song is so silly with the lyrics. Because I think as... They're not like super young men when this song came out, right? They were like 37, 39. So they were a little bit older. But something about this song just feels like a young man just still trying to figure out... Not college age, but maybe a little bit older. Has a dead-end job, not a career. Life is just kind of...
00:45:47 --> 00:46:17 Yeah. Yeah. We all know a hobosexual. He is not doing anything. Oh, that's you ever heard of a hobosexual? I have now. Yeah. So a homosexual, they just, honey, like they can put it down, but that's all they can do. They're not putting down nothing else. Nothing brought to the table, no food, no nothing. So I think this song is good for that. You know, it's kind of things where it's just like got nothing going on. Life is kind of okay, but hang on. Our relationship is also not going anywhere. So I think that's what's also very funny about it. But you've taken over my mind as well.
00:46:17 --> 00:46:33 Yes. It's very interesting. It's like this relationship is not going anywhere fast. It didn't work out, but a little roll in the hay on occasion is okay. And this song is a little cynical, but it is very bright and you're pretending that you're fine, but like you're broke and tired and maybe just a little horn.
00:46:33 --> 00:46:53 eat you know but i think that's why it works for their age yes because it's like midlife crisis like getting closer to midlife crisis like my life is like not all there yes if you're like a dad or something or like yes no you're so right actually you don't have to be a hobo sex you can be a husband who just needs a you know yeah need some real refresh yes and remote
00:46:53 --> 00:47:14 from Rogaine, Monoxy, or whatever. But I think the overall sound of this is built well. The instruments that are there, the trombone, makes us feel so goofy. Yes. Very goofy. It does. Which is the whole circus vibe as well. Yeah. So it makes sense. The bridge is iconic, by the way. Love the bridge. Why don't you come back to my flat?
00:47:14 --> 00:47:24 because he's broke. He's talking. He's like, why don't you marry me? Girl. Yeah. Would you come back to my plastic? I was like, I'm all smart.
00:47:26 --> 00:47:46 Yeah, this is so fun to sing along to. Yeah. Like, all the live performances, it's just, yeah, it's just like a joyful song. Yes. And yeah, there's like this restlessness to it as well. I mean, obviously it's called Up All Night. Oh, yeah. But like, that's kind of what makes it so fun. But it's like emotional restlessness. Yeah, because he's like, he's having existential crisis, but he's at the pub.
00:47:46 --> 00:48:12 Right. Yeah. Yes. What'd you think of the music video with this kind of like block party situation? A British block party. Can I say? Yeah. Speaking of homosexuals, I love Gary's little cutout gloves. Oh. Again, it was giving busking. It was giving like they needed money. Yeah. Like the local neighborhood band. Yes. Like let's say the neighborhood, like, you know, like the kids, the center, the center for the kids. That's what it was giving me.
00:48:13 --> 00:48:35 Everyone bring your best roast. Yes. And I've learned what a roast is because of Say Now. The girl group Say Now. Oh, if you want to go eat it. Yeah. There is a restaurant here that's known for it. Oh, speaking of hungry and eating, my stomach just growled like no one's business. Oh my God, I'm so hungry. So if you guys heard that, sorry. But yeah, I think the video is very cute. It's very...
00:48:36 --> 00:48:56 Not really. What's that word? When there's like a community and just family and it feels very like at home, down to earth. Yeah. Wow. I'm so removed from reality. Apparently I couldn't figure out that word, but it's just very down to earth. Very humble. Yes. Yeah. And that's what I liked about it. There was no like pomp and circumstance. It was just guys playing on some instruments.
00:48:56 --> 00:49:13 And it was fun watching all the extras. Because some of them just looked like they do not want to be there. Right. I got paid a couple of pounds. Yeah. It's like a gloomy, like, you know, it's kind of gloomy. Which, you know, England is like kind of known for the gloomy weather. So it kind of made sense there. Yeah. But some of them were bopping too. Yes. Some of those, they were feeling it. Yeah.
00:49:13 --> 00:49:41 Yeah. And I appreciated the transition tonight for the bridge. And then all the sparklers and the fireworks and stuff. It was a good, it kept you interested. Yes. Yeah. What do they call it in England? Because I know like we call it a kickback, like, you know, the cookout, but we call it a kickback or something like that. What do you, what is England? I don't know. Do they also use block party as the term? Maybe block party. That's the word. But I know kickbacks from, you know. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I don't know. But. But yeah, I find this really fun. I give it a 10. Oh, is it a 10? I love it. This is a 9 for me. Yeah. Yeah.
00:49:41 --> 00:50:04 Next is What Is Love? Done by John Shanks and Gary Howard, Jason, and Mark of Take That. And sang by Howard. Mr. Howard. If love is true, then let it break my heart. Oh my God. Chris, I love this song. What Is Love? By Howard. Oh my God.
00:50:05 --> 00:50:23 It's his song. Y'all, quick thing. Did y'all know he had a lisp? I didn't know his man had a lisp. I didn't know. That's part of the charm. It is. And it's so cute because when we were watching the circus, what is love? And I was like, oh, he's so cute. I didn't know his man. He's a grown man. But there's something about it. And also, he does not sing.
00:50:23 --> 00:50:48 Like he's learned to control it. Some people, they can't control their lisp and I can hear it. And the way he sings, I was asking, I was being silly, but I was like, I do wonder if by the way he's singing, by trying to keep his tongue flat, is how the notes are being like, we have to keep our tongue flat when we sing. So if you're lisping, your tongue is gonna naturally start going right in the middle of your teeth. He keeps it super flat and his technique is really good. Cause the song is high. I don't know why it's that high.
00:50:48 --> 00:51:11 That belt in the bridge. Whoa. Whoa. Holy you. Yeah. I was like, hmm. But can I tell you? And his pitch is amazing. Yes. Whoa. It is very easy to go flat on that part because it's just straight up belting, sustaining the notes. Even when I'm in the car, like I can hit it because I'm a woman. That's in my range. Right. But whoa.
00:51:11 --> 00:51:29 So I do appreciate that song. Like the performance with the circus with them putting the makeup on. I'm not laughing because I'm not smiling because I'm like, oh, this is funny. It's just like. One of the best parts of that whole show. Yes. And it's so good because the guys are acting their butts off. Again, the campiness is so important. I think.
00:51:29 --> 00:51:57 There is a drama of putting on the happy face and singing about one of life's biggest mysteries. Yes. We can figure out money. You put this, you do that. You invest, you do this. You take, you take, don't take it. You do X, Y, and Z, you figure that out. You can figure out a lot of things about life. But love is one of those things where you're just like, am I doing this right? And I think this is one of my favorite songs in general, just the way it's written on this album. The song throughout just carries like inquisitive tones. Like, because he's not...
00:51:57 --> 00:52:24 super like dumb. It's not dumb. It's not like ignorance. It's just one of those things where it's just like a literal and symbolic uncertainty, uh, willingness and curiosity. Cause he's asking because maybe he did it wrong. And it's like maybe the relationship that he was in or that they were in just, I thought it was right. Um, and, and maybe it's the roses. It's not the roses. Maybe it's me getting down on my knees and begging, but then it's like, no, it's you. Yeah.
00:52:24 --> 00:52:49 only you can give me whatever it is I'm looking for this amorphous unnamed super vague thing yeah but I know I feel something with you and I'm like yeah and I'm just like I love that um so I have a question for you in our audience Chris what is love to you um it doesn't have to be romantic but I was just like oh my god what is that what is love like how would you explain love to a five-year-old
00:52:50 --> 00:53:20 oh God, this is too deep for me right now. You see what I mean? And that's what the song does. I was sitting there like, oh my God. Well, he doesn't fully answer it. Yes. Right? Like it's all, the lyrics are kind of contradictory, like there's contradictory questions and statements. Yeah. And yeah, I think that's the whole point, right? Like that you can't really define it. And that's what Olivia Dean's whole album is about too, right? Right. I mean, we did a review for it. I can honestly say now we've done a review and I've listened to it a little while, I think I would change my score. It's like a little bit.
00:53:20 --> 00:53:44 I don't know if I would, but I'm just really impressed that she's charting the way she is. Oh my gosh, she won so many Grammys. I do, right? Like, most of the album is all charting on the Hot 100. You know what? Solid work. I went to a party yesterday. I was working a party, and the girls were singing their little hearts out. Man I Need? Yeah. Yeah. I was like, whoa. Okay. Crazy. Also, I think Keisha from The Shook of Babes is on The Masked Singer, and she also just did Man I Need. Oh, I need to watch that. Yeah. Anyway. Okay.
00:53:44 --> 00:54:02 What is love? Yeah. Beautiful. I mentioned it's kind of like a counterpart to the circus, I think. Okay, yeah. Because it has that similar cinematic quality to it. Yeah. And it's just as sad in a way. And I feel like Howard...
00:54:03 --> 00:54:26 He's so commanding with his tone. Mm-hmm. So it's just like a part... It's almost like a part two to the circus. It's like, yeah. They just... They're so good together. Also, the Abbey Road version where the orchestra is just going off. That will sound like, ew. That orchestra was amazing. Dude. Oh, my God. This song... Yeah. Highlight for the album, for sure. Wow.
00:54:26 --> 00:54:46 Every time it comes on, I sing my little heart out. Oh, thank you. That's me with the circus more so, I think. You know what? You're more of like a quiet pain. I'm like... You're a loud pain. 14 pages worth. Okay, so what do you rate it? I gave it a 9.5. Okay. And only because I think...
00:54:47 --> 00:55:14 The song is great recorded, but it is quite difficult to sing live. And I think certain things like that. I like it, but I'm just like, ooh, this is a tough song to sing. I'm not saying he can't do it. But there is something. I'm just like, okay, how far are we pushing this? Where it's strained. So, I mean, should I give it a 10? In my heart, it's a 10. But the technician in me is like, is this something you can maintain? What do you give it? I'll go nine. Okay. Ooh, hang on. Only a nine? Yeah.
00:55:15 --> 00:55:35 Well, I gave the circus a 10. Why can't you give this a 10? Because I like the circus more. Like a 9.5? The show is, we're breaking up. First day in the studio or the last day. We're breaking up. I'm sticking with a 9. All right, guys, let me write on to you. And this is done by John Shanks, Gary Howard, and Jason. And we're up. Take that.
00:55:39 --> 00:55:57 Okay, so you sounds the most Coldplay to me. I'm trying to avoid the comparison. That's literally my first note too is Coldplay. Chris Martin would love this. Yeah, like even in the production as well. Yeah. I assume John Shanks has worked with Coldplay. Oops, sorry, Mr. John Shanks. But yeah, the chorus. It just literally sounds like...
00:55:58 --> 00:56:27 Yeah, yeah. It literally sounds like Chris Martin. The U is definitely the good one. And I think the chorus is probably my least favorite part of this song. Yeah. It's simple. That's valid. It's just not the most impactful for me. Yeah. However, the verses bring up the score. Yeah, that's valid. Because I like the way it's written. Again, songwriting on this, like lyrically, is just amazing, I think. But the lyrics kind of dismiss all the, like the storybook romanticism, you know? And I kind of like that.
00:56:27 --> 00:56:54 it's basically what you were saying. This is like a continuation of what is love. It's, it's back to the, it's you. Right. And so all these ideas of love that are written in like the fairy tales and stuff is not already accurate. Yeah. We've already answered the question. Well, not really answered it, but we already kind of addressed the elephant in the room, the elephant on the tour. Yes. Oh, that's valid. You know, when I hear this song, I heard, um, country, um,
00:56:54 --> 00:57:23 Like, if you think about, like, the two guitars that are there, it twangs. It goes... Sure. I sound crazy. But there are two guitars that are essentially harmonizing with each other. They're both playing, like, complimentary notes. Okay. And if this... If country music wasn't the influence, I just think about, like, what would have happened if it gets flipped? It could be flipped for, like, a Tim McGraw... Sorry. A Tim McGraw, a Brad Paisley, or Kenny Chesney. I'm thinking, like, old-timey, early 2000s, like...
00:57:23 --> 00:57:48 you know, like heavy hitters of country, not like the guys now, like a Morgan Wallen or whatever. But I'm talking about like, before elements of trap drumming got in there and pop, it was just think about a lot of like contemporary. Sure. Yeah. They're, they're using elements of like pop and R&B and hip hop. But like back in the day when it was super pure, you had two guitars playing throughout. It was just drum and guitar. And then maybe someone's little, you know, jug, a jug of beer. I don't know. But
00:57:49 --> 00:58:10 yeah but yeah it just it just kind of just feels a little high a little bit yeah i think maybe you should have leaned a little lean more into it so it gave a little more of a country rock vibe but something for me is just kind of just okay okay so what do you rate it 7.5 it's okay i'll match you oh yeah compared to the album okay yeah that's deserved oh yes
00:58:10 --> 00:58:27 Okay, next is Hold Up a Light, done by John Shanks, Jamie Norton, Ben Mark, and Gary Howard, Jason, and Mark of Take That. And this was the fifth single from the album released in September 2009 to promote the Circus live album and it piqued at number 14 in the UK singles chart.
00:58:33 --> 00:58:58 this one it's very sweet the lyrics again i think of shine in terms of he's like you're such a big star to me and the song is doing the same thing where it's like sure you're meant to be great you're meant to do something better and i see that in you and other people are going to see it in you but when you make it i'm watching you still just don't forget don't forget me because i'll never forget you like i'll be watching you like the whole delight for me um and i took that kind of like
00:58:59 --> 00:59:13 idea about it because I think about like parents watching their child it's like I want the best for you yeah I want so I want you to shine I want you to be like a star it doesn't have to be a star you can be a star fine it's gonna be a star at the library I don't care but just like be good
00:59:13 --> 00:59:31 I want, you know, so I like that. I mean, there's some romantic, like, you know, notes here and there. But I think just overall, I like the message of it. And I like the chantiness of it. Like, even when they were running through the, running to the B stage during the tour, it just felt very...
00:59:32 --> 00:59:56 climax of the movie moment where yes you think about stars born that man didn't die he was saying this song if all the men didn't die and all the versions of that film yeah you know i think another perspective i felt was like almost from the perspective of the fans yeah watching them yes right like we're here supporting you um right so yeah i thought that was interesting as well because it's
00:59:56 --> 01:00:19 In that way it's like it was made to be performed on tour because it's for the fans to chant along with as well. And yeah, super epic, very anthemic again. And yeah, the production's awesome. Like the way the cymbals crash and the guitars and strings go crazy, it's really, really cool. But yeah, I agree with you with the imagery and the lyrics. Just framing life as a performance, it doesn't need to be a literal performance.
01:00:20 --> 01:00:38 But it is a performance, regardless of what you end up doing. And to have the support around you for that was nice. And again, Mark, great choice to lead. Because again, that warmth there, for sure. And yeah, using this for that tour as the final bow for all the circus performers. The elephant comes back out. The elephant!
01:00:38 --> 01:00:53 Again, there's like so much going on. Yeah. But it makes sense. Yeah, it does. I think speaking of Mark's voice, I was like looking up some stuff, doing research, just trying to figure out what people's thoughts were about this album at the time. And a lot of people didn't care for his voice. Really?
01:00:53 --> 01:01:10 Yeah, yeah. And I was just like, I can understand. You're not into the whole kind of sounding old thing. I don't mind. I don't mind. But I love the way it contrasts with the others. Yeah, it's super quirky. It stands out. It's very like, oh, we know to take that song because of it. Yeah.
01:01:10 --> 01:01:28 I can hear why people might be like, oh, it's a little grating to me. But I think the tone of it, I know it sounds so strange, but I think I told you we were watching them perform. I'm like, I imagine someone talking like this, you know, if you're from the UK. I don't know why. I imagine this very stringy, wiry voice. I'm so sorry. That accent is awful.
01:01:30 --> 01:01:57 You know what? My accent will never be good. You can practice when we go to the UK to go watch this tour. In my defense, I speak like three languages, guys. I can't speak English. That is true. I vouch for that. Thank you. I'm struggling. But yeah, I think I get that. But I was just like, I like that he sounds that way. It's just very distinct. And he sounds like what I think a British person would sound.
01:01:57 --> 01:02:15 Oh my, this accent is just... If you... Okay, y'all, sorry. It gets worse each time. No, it does, it does. Okay, like when I was a kid, I used to watch animation and the British characters would have this kind of tone. I know what you mean. And I don't know why they would do that to them. I totally know what you mean. You know? It's about to say. It was just, it wasn't like a charming voice.
01:02:16 --> 01:02:42 I get it. I know. I totally know what you're talking about. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I understand. Caricatures. But again, kid in America watching kid cartoons. It's just one of those things, you know? But yeah, I think his voice is nice here. I love how like, all of the life for me. They have throughout this album, very minor key changes. A couple steps. Maybe half. Either way, there's something that happens when you can feel and hear the energy change. I love that. Okay. So I rate this one an 8.5.
01:02:42 --> 01:03:03 Ooh, okay. I can match that. Okay. Yes. Nice. Last and certainly not least. It's not last. It's not last. Kind of last. Yes. Yeah. Depends on the streaming that you're using. But yes. So up next is here. And this was done by John Shanks, Ollie Knights, Gail Peridigian, and Gary Howard Jason, and Mark of Take That. Yeah.
01:03:04 --> 01:03:20 Okay. Yeah, no, suddenly we got a new name. I was thrown off by that also. But also, we are probably one of the only shows that mentions the singers and songwriters and the production. Okay, so if I made a mistake, I do apologize. No disrespect. But yeah, that was a tough one. All good. All good.
01:03:24 --> 01:03:46 Okay, so here, okay, so Howard, we get leading one more time before this album ends. This is an interesting song because you get a very folksy verse and bridge. Kind of bouncy again. Back to the, what would you call it again? White man whimsy. But then the chorus goes into like this super big rock song.
01:03:46 --> 01:04:05 kind of more intense moment. Yes. And then it really quickly just switches again back in the verses and the bridge. Oh my God. So it definitely makes for an interesting listen. Yeah. And then the end you get this like crazy climax, like kind of like, you know, like at the Mickey, the Disney Mickey, like when all the instruments like go crazy. The finale.
01:04:05 --> 01:04:26 yeah yeah fireworks it was like kind of like that yeah in a good way no it's not a bad more planned chaos i love mickey yeah and the lyrics are super interesting for this like the chorus like this big declaration situation and the verses are but then they mentioned like distance and separation and stuff so yeah it's like it's again kind of what you were saying like this relationship is not perfect
01:04:27 --> 01:04:44 But they still keep coming back to each other. So they're kind of navigating that. So I find that interesting. And there are huge harmonies in this too. I love it. Yeah. I sound crazy, but I love it. Really cool climax of the album. Like that whole last minute is so cool. You know, one thing I like about this song is how it...
01:04:44 --> 01:05:05 Comes in. And where it goes. And where it ends up. Yeah. And I'm like, holy smokes. Because I think when I heard this, I thought, oh, it's going to be another folksy moment. Like, oh, God. Same. In the verses, I was like, I don't know if I'm going to like this. He was like, meet Mark. For lack of a better word, meet Mark. Whatever that is. But I thought to myself...
01:05:05 --> 01:05:31 What is it going to do? But I think that's why I like this song. We are K-pop fans. Yes. Like through and through. And this is what K-pop does. Right? It changes the genre. Or maybe it kicks itself into like an umpteenth gear that we weren't expecting. And this song does a good job of doing that. And I think the way that the chorus comes in, like right now it's escaping me the notes and the harmony stack. But the...
01:05:31 --> 01:05:57 As opposed to going up, I was like, holy crap, what is that? It makes you take note. Love that part. I would say kind of remind me of Coldplay, but only because of the weird dissonant feeling I got from it. Oh. Yeah, but again, I don't know Coldplay that well. Apparently, there's a lot of British rock that I've been listening to, but didn't realize it was British rock. Like, even Bring Me to the Horizon. Oh, yeah. Can you feel that? I didn't know that man was there. I didn't know they were from there. I was just like, ah!
01:05:59 --> 01:06:20 You know, I was just like headbanging. Yeah. But there's a lot of musicians I didn't realize were coming from the UK. And I think with this song, the only reference I can make is to Coldplay, which is super ignorant. So sorry about that. But if I didn't know Coldplay, even if I don't know them, like I don't know their discography. This song is actually like good in my opinion. Yeah. It's just...
01:06:22 --> 01:06:41 has that message, like you said, of like the coming and going. And I think that ebb and flow is just real. Like that thing's perfect all the dang time, you know? Um, so I do appreciate that. And that ending was just so just, it's a cacophony. Yeah. It's a lot, but it's just songs like that, that feel like there's a live band in the studio. Mm-hmm.
01:06:41 --> 01:07:08 It's important. And it's the last freaking song on the album. Like, what are you doing if not trying to end with the band? Because I'm so sick of us doing album reviews. And the last song just disappoints us. We've said, oh, this is the last song. And we always try to replace with a bonus track. I have not tried to do that this whole album review, especially this last song. So I think in terms of it being the ending, perfect. Is it better than some of the other songs that we've chosen? I don't know. I won't say my score yet. But...
01:07:08 --> 01:07:22 I think it's a solid ending and it's just so like powerful to end too. So I feel like it's very hopeful. It doesn't sound like they broke up or like something's ended terribly. It sounds very like optimism and, you know,
01:07:22 --> 01:07:38 think the end of any Transformers movie, you know, what I've done. Oh my God. Yeah. No, I agree. I don't think it's the strongest song on the album, but I think if you look at this as a project, this is a beautiful ending. And it's a very satisfying ending. Yes.
01:07:38 --> 01:08:00 um although there is a period of silence before we get a little bonus moment um but for the true like yeah track listing this is the full end but yeah i'll give it an eight oh okay yeah you know what oh i'll give it an 8.5 i'll match you ish okay okay i like the vibes of the song like you're kind of dead and then kind of at the end the fingers start moving you guys have seen that
01:08:01 --> 01:08:31 means on the instagram good reference yeah so for some reason the last few albums we've been reviewing yes they all have a hidden track or they have a um like a period of silence before something happens yes so this is another situation yeah where we get she said after a period of silence and this was done by john shanks and the four members of take that
01:08:31 --> 01:08:41 Yeah. Thank God. Yeah. It's definitely an outlier.
01:08:42 --> 01:09:02 It sounds like the, yes, it sounds like the ringmaster had to vamp a little bit. Yeah, but they were just like jamming backstage at the circus. Right. Or like, oh, wait, hang on. The elephant had to take a dump. Let me entertain you guys while. Which I'm not mad at. Right. That's a concept. But like, Gary is so Barry Manilow. Like, it's cheese. I get that. It's like,
01:09:02 --> 01:09:19 The dad vibes are big in this one. It's cheese sometimes, but always talent. Because what you cannot say about Gary is that he can't say. What you cannot say about Gary is that he cannot write. Exactly. You can't say any of that. I think the lyrics are hilarious because he's like, I ain't ish.
01:09:19 --> 01:09:42 You know, you know, as low as deuces, I'm as as bad as fast food. But, you know, I'm young and broken. I'm probably bad luck for you. But this girl is still down for me. Oh, my God. How lucky are you? He's a hobosexual. This is this is the hobosexual. There you go. This matches more, I think. A little bit more than. Yeah. Up on night is just like midlife crisis. That's about I can get it.
01:09:42 --> 01:09:51 I get it. But when he said I was too broke for that, I said, okay, got it. The bridge is so cute, though, I would say. I love how everybody's shaking and boogie.
01:09:53 --> 01:10:16 like he's the kind of he gives the energy that like i don't get embarrassed very easily so like i would love to see like a dad or an uncle do this i'd be like go ahead uncle go ahead you know it's unc energy for sure straight up unc energy yeah no this is fun i'm kind of here for the jam yeah vibe of this the even the beginning of them like kind of giggling with each other before the song started was like very cute
01:10:16 --> 01:10:45 And yeah, I kind of love the way it's written again. Like that bumps up the score for me. Because I think if you just take the song and I wasn't really paying attention to what they were saying, I'd be like, it's fine. But I think the lyrics are quite silly. Like you said, like his life is a mess. But then at least he's got this girl distracting him. He's like, I love you. Yeah. You know? And yeah, the little dance instruction. The bridge is fun. I don't know. I think it's cute. It is cute, but it's just so random. I'm not mad at the song. I think it's a cute little bonus track for sure. Respect. Yeah. I'll give it an eight.
01:10:45 --> 01:11:08 All right. I give this little ringmaster interlude 7.5. Okay. Yeah. Okay. So that was the end of the album. Oh, yes, it is. If we had to cut a song off this album, what would it be and why? Oh, my God. No. That is hard. We haven't had this moment since maybe Kylie's disco. Oh. That was hard. Yeah.
01:11:08 --> 01:11:23 That was freaking hard. And I think I would change my mind. I don't know. It's all right. That whole album is... Yeah, I know. I mean, my lowest score is You. Sorry. And I'm going to be honest. I kind of saved the whole album except for that song.
01:11:26 --> 01:11:49 tell you don't check it he's gotta take that thing because he's like one song yeah i'm joking so yeah i guess that one you know oh okay if i didn't i don't know i don't know i can't pick a different one okay that's so valid i mean yeah nah i think what else did you rate kind of low julie for you oh yeah you didn't love that yeah you know what yeah i'm okay without julie shall i love goodbye oh
01:11:50 --> 01:12:15 Sorry, Julie. Yeah, sorry, Julie. Yeah, I'm sure you'll be fine. Meet me. The sun will come out. The sun will come out. If you had to keep a song. Stop. Oh, my God. Okay, so hear me out, right? It stinks that the garden is the only, like, real song where they all kind of, like, do a little bit of a... A lead. Relay. Yeah. Yeah, lead. Yeah, moment. Obviously, it's, like, a single, so I'm not going to, like, shout that one out. Okay. Okay.
01:12:16 --> 01:12:33 Yeah, if it was a single, I'd choose said it all for sure. I said it all. Ooh, okay. That's okay. I will say, um, what is love? Because I think every time it comes on, I am in my car shouting. I get it. Yeah. What is love for me? Keep it. Um, I think it's each of them saying it. They probably have to lower the key, but it's in terms of just like...
01:12:34 --> 01:13:00 That one's a good one. Yeah. I mean, then I'll do the counterpart and do the circus. Okay. Yeah. Ooh. All right. Yeah. Yeah. That melody is just so beautiful. Oh, man. Okay. So this is our first take that album. This is true. And I regret not giving- Of many. Wait, hang on. I think. Wait, no. Wait, no. Wait, wait. Wait, wait. Wait, really? I forgot how many they had. Wait, hang on. No, you're right. Oh, no. I kind of regret not giving it a 10 now. I'm sitting here like with like, you know. What, the whole album? No, no. What is love? Yeah.
01:13:01 --> 01:13:30 I take it back as a 10. It's a 10. I mean, we'll probably edit it to have a 9.5, but I think I'm going to leave it as a 10 because I do like this. I love that freaking song so much. But yeah, no, this is probably, like you said, the first of many. Oh my God. What is it? What happened to us? Like, oh. We found a new boy band to stand. I know, but I wish I never saw that monkey movie. Dang it. Darn you, Robbie Williams. Darn you, Robbie Williams. Had I not watched Better Man, I would have not known to take that. Dang it. That's so annoying. No, I think I would have still made you watch that Netflix documentary.
01:13:30 --> 01:13:36 Oh, you know, I love a good boy band. You know, I love a good boy band. Yeah. I love music documentary.
01:13:36 --> 01:14:06 I love when men dance and sing for me. And again, a man who earns is a man who earns, but this group, they don't just dance and sing though. Not anymore. They also play instruments. Like, yeah, they upgraded. Like that concert was one of the most impressive shows of talent. I think I've ever seen. We did say that together. Yeah, we did say it. We were like, Oh, they're dancing. Oh, they wait. They're doing the throwback stuff. They're great dancing. Wait, they're playing instruments. We had that moment. Yeah. The unicycling. Yeah. Hang on for the take that reunion. Are you guys going to bring back the unicycling? They're a little older now. Yeah
01:14:07 --> 01:14:32 You better put some lube on them knees. Better go home. Some turmeric. Oh, my. Some turmeric. Anyway, this album. Great album. Yes. Great tour. Super polished. Great era. And again, I was super impressed by the lyrics. I think that's what surprised me the most. Because, you know, I think with pop music, a lot of the lyrics tend to be kind of throwaway. Yeah. Yeah.
01:14:32 --> 01:14:56 But every single song on here, there's at least a few lines where I'm like, wow, that's like a beautifully written line. Yes. And just conceptually as well. Yeah. Like this was so well thought out. Like we mentioned in the beginning, this was released the same week as Britney's Circus. And there was like a bunch of buzz at the time. Even I remember this at the time. I didn't really know who they were. But I remember I was, you know, I was supporting Britney. So I was like, oh, this group is like releasing this other album also called Circus.
01:14:56 --> 01:15:06 But they were very, I read some interviews where they were like, no, like we've been thinking about this concept for so long. Like this does not affect anything, you know, and they ended up, you know.
01:15:07 --> 01:15:35 doing really well. It was okay that they had the same title album. But yeah, I think I used the word cinematic a few times. Just a beautifully written album that really helps you visually the whole time. Like you can literally sit and play a whole movie or a musical like you were already forming. So I have become a take that Stan. Yeah, me too.
01:15:35 --> 01:15:56 i sound like i don't like it but y'all listen you know i have no more room in my heart and every time i think i don't it's like dessert like i have room for dessert yeah like i've listened to enough music and then like suddenly a group from the freaking 90s like what the heck um oh my god it's crazy at least you're still active
01:15:57 --> 01:16:16 Which makes me so happy. Can I just say, because I'm just like, oh, I hate when you have to look at YouTube like, oh, I remember when. No, this is like two years ago they released something, you know? Yeah, yeah, yeah. But yeah, they've been pretty active. And I think with this album, if you β let's call it Better World.
01:16:16 --> 01:16:42 Perfect world. Which one? Beautiful world. Beautiful world. So I listened to beautiful world and I don't want to say like, oh yeah, it was bad. But I feel like this is better in my opinion. I listened to it and I found myself, I skipped. I skipped. And I was just like, oh shoot, my bad. I didn't mean to, but I was like, I listened to the chorus and I was like, okay, whatever. Sean came in, cool. Patience, love patience. Right. But then I was just like...
01:16:42 --> 01:17:02 I'm gonna have to listen to it again, but I was trying to figure out where they were coming from with this album. Because we watched the documentary. Yeah, sure. But like, you know, after I take that again, sonically, this is so far removed from the 90s stuff that they were doing. And then you have like their solo. So like, Mark, this makes sense. Gary makes sense.
01:17:02 --> 01:17:20 Howard tried, did not do. Jason, what was he doing? Right. Right? But this is also a testament to their own personal tastes. Yes. Right? So I think it's really interesting how they are able to come together and actually kind of have similar experiences.
01:17:20 --> 01:17:47 taste in music songwriting styles you know um and abilities because apparently everyone's there's no useless member plain and simple so i think this album is really solid um really inspiring as well in terms of like songwriting um sonically i was just like oh i want to write something like this and that's good you can sit here and either make like you said when people go to your show either make them a bigger fan or make them a fan watched it without knowing them like them yes now
01:17:47 --> 01:18:07 And I'm a Mark Stan. So I said a couple of times, but no, I think overall, this is like a band that I can actually say thing with girls allowed. When you got me into them, I was like, I can full signature blood. Oh, yes. Yeah. Kylie. Yeah. That was oof. Yeah. So I'm in,
01:18:07 --> 01:18:18 I'm a taker. I'm gonna take that. Take this. I don't think they have a fan. I try to look it up. I'm a let us know what it is. So I give it a nine. This whole album. Oh, yeah, me too.
01:18:18 --> 01:18:46 Me too. Because I was like, is that perfect? Because I don't know what perfect is for them. Because I have to listen to the progression. Yeah. You have to listen to that. See what that sounds like as a five piece. With their manly voices. Yes. Take that, fans. What do you guys think of the Circus album?
