Is Girls Aloud "Tangled Up" the Best Pop Album of 2007?

Chris and Chantel finally dig into the 2007 album “Tangled Up” - the imperial-phase peak of Girls Aloud and Xenomania. From the electropop of "Call the Shots" and the Nazareth-sampling "Sexy! No No No..." to the smooth-jazz swerve of "Can't Speak French," the reggae oddity "Control of the Knife," and the drum and bass experiment "What You Crying For," this is the record where Britain's biggest girl group finally got the recognition they deserved. We break down the production, the lore, the singles, and the deep cuts, plus the genre-hopping that makes “Tangled Up” their most acclaimed album. 00:00:00 --> 00:00:05 But did you ever think that loving would be nothing more than walking me home?

00:00:05 --> 00:00:06 Now, now.

00:00:10 --> 00:00:15 This is CCTV, the nonstop pop show where we provide our unfiltered, honest opinions on global pop music.

00:00:16 --> 00:00:16 Yeah!

00:00:16 --> 00:00:20 And Girls Aloud has just released their anniversary deluxe of Tangled Up.

00:00:20 --> 00:00:22 So it's time for us to get into it.

00:00:22 --> 00:00:25 Is this Girls Aloud's best album?

00:00:26 --> 00:00:26 Ooh!

00:00:27 --> 00:00:36 So, Tangled Up is Girls Aloud's fourth studio album released in November 2007 and again was fully produced by Brian Higgins and the Xenomania team.

00:00:36 --> 00:00:40 And many think of this era as Girls Aloud's imperial phase.

00:00:41 --> 00:00:44 And the whole team was very intentional with the whole release.

00:00:44 --> 00:00:50 So following the success of their first greatest hits collection, the group defied the odds and kept going.

00:00:50 --> 00:00:55 And Xenominia sat down with the girls to learn about what was going on with their lives to get inspiration.

00:00:55 --> 00:01:03 With no covers and no ballad, this album was successful commercially hitting number four in the UK and going platinum.

00:01:04 --> 00:01:09 And this album was also critically praised, with the group finally being embraced for their sonic innovation.

00:01:09 --> 00:01:18 The deluxe version of the album was released just a few weeks ago in August 2026, so it's time for us to dive into the production, visuals, etc.

00:01:25 --> 00:01:29 So stay tuned and we will drop our individual ratings.

00:01:29 --> 00:01:30 You are so welcome to join us.

00:01:31 --> 00:01:32 But viewer discretion is advised.

00:01:32 --> 00:01:34 Your fable be criticized.

00:01:35 --> 00:01:37 Yeah, yeah.

00:01:38 --> 00:01:43 So before we get into the album tracks, let's talk about the visuals because we actually have two album covers.

00:01:44 --> 00:01:47 We have the main one that they're not on the cover of.

00:01:47 --> 00:01:49 It's this beautiful...

00:01:49 --> 00:01:51 Purple, deep purple.

00:01:51 --> 00:01:52 Yes.

00:01:52 --> 00:01:56 The Girls Aloud logo hanging down from these strings, I guess.

00:01:56 --> 00:01:57 Yeah.

00:01:58 --> 00:01:58 Yeah.

00:01:58 --> 00:02:02 And then we have the fan edition cover where we have the girls tangled up in ropes.

00:02:03 --> 00:02:04 So silly.

00:02:04 --> 00:02:04 Yes.

00:02:04 --> 00:02:09 So the story actually goes that, well, I guess there are a few little stories to this.

00:02:09 --> 00:02:15 So the Sound of Girls Aloud Greatest Hits cover also did not have the girls on it.

00:02:15 --> 00:02:17 And the label claimed that...

00:02:18 --> 00:02:23 From their research, they actually got more sales of the album because they were not on the cover.

00:02:23 --> 00:02:29 Because they felt people might be embarrassed buying a girl group album if you have like five fabulous women on it.

00:02:30 --> 00:02:30 Okay.

00:02:30 --> 00:02:38 And so to be cooler, they went for this kind of very classic, timeless, only words cover.

00:02:38 --> 00:02:38 Okay.

00:02:39 --> 00:02:44 However, Lirani also learned that the girls absolutely hated this photo shoot that they did.

00:02:44 --> 00:02:44 Yeah.

00:02:45 --> 00:02:46 That's amazing.

00:02:46 --> 00:02:49 Which is why we ended up getting this fan edition cover instead.

00:02:49 --> 00:02:51 So... You know.

00:02:53 --> 00:02:53 That makes sense.

00:02:54 --> 00:02:54 I feel like...

00:02:56 --> 00:02:58 I feel like as a young lady...

00:02:59 --> 00:03:01 I can relate because it's like, the picture does not look good.

00:03:01 --> 00:03:02 Don't release it.

00:03:02 --> 00:03:03 Bye.

00:03:03 --> 00:03:03 Figure it out.

00:03:03 --> 00:03:06 Like, do not have to be busted on the album cover, please.

00:03:06 --> 00:03:08 It's like, it'll be ubiquitous.

00:03:08 --> 00:03:09 I'll be ubiquitous for looking ugly.

00:03:09 --> 00:03:10 I mean, Nadine said it herself.

00:03:10 --> 00:03:14 Like, she hates all the memes of herself because she's ugly.

00:03:14 --> 00:03:15 I can't do her accent.

00:03:15 --> 00:03:15 Let me stop.

00:03:16 --> 00:03:17 I just can't.

00:03:17 --> 00:03:18 I look terrible in all of them.

00:03:19 --> 00:03:22 So if she's like saying that now, I can only imagine if they all were like, okay.

00:03:23 --> 00:03:24 I could pass.

00:03:24 --> 00:03:25 I respect it.

00:03:26 --> 00:03:29 So what do you think of this classic purple cover?

00:03:29 --> 00:03:31 The purple, it's interesting.

00:03:31 --> 00:03:34 I think the purple is softer and more regal than a red.

00:03:34 --> 00:03:37 Cause you think tangled up, it's like, okay, tangled up in what?

00:03:37 --> 00:03:41 If they would've done for a red, it would've, I think it would've come across a little bit too smexy maybe.

00:03:41 --> 00:03:43 So the purple is safe, it's still bold.

00:03:44 --> 00:03:45 I love the gradient.

00:03:45 --> 00:03:47 I'm having a gradient ombre phase.

00:03:47 --> 00:03:50 Just purchase a dress that has ombre.

00:03:50 --> 00:03:50 I just love it.

00:03:50 --> 00:03:51 I love a good fade.

00:03:51 --> 00:03:55 I mean, our logo, our newer logo now is a gradient.

00:03:55 --> 00:03:56 I'm here for it.

00:03:56 --> 00:03:57 I love the silver.

00:03:57 --> 00:03:58 It looks sleek.

00:03:58 --> 00:03:58 It looks mature.

00:03:59 --> 00:04:01 It's all like caps too.

00:04:01 --> 00:04:02 Just everything feels intentional.

00:04:02 --> 00:04:09 Even if that wasn't intention to have this be the album cover, I feel like it was intentional that we made a plan, a plan B, excuse me.

00:04:09 --> 00:04:09 Yeah.

00:04:10 --> 00:04:10 I like it.

00:04:10 --> 00:04:11 I like the purple as well.

00:04:11 --> 00:04:14 I think it does feel more mature for sure.

00:04:14 --> 00:04:17 And I like that there is depth to it.

00:04:17 --> 00:04:21 Like the girls allowed letters do look like they're like made of silver.

00:04:22 --> 00:04:22 Yes.

00:04:22 --> 00:04:24 You know, so it does look cool, actually.

00:04:24 --> 00:04:25 It does.

00:04:25 --> 00:04:27 But I actually like the fan edition cover.

00:04:27 --> 00:04:28 I think they look good.

00:04:28 --> 00:04:31 Like I like that they all have different eye shadow.

00:04:31 --> 00:04:34 They all have ponytails, except for Sarah, obviously, with the bob.

00:04:35 --> 00:04:38 The concept, obviously, of them being tangled up in these ropes.

00:04:38 --> 00:04:39 makes sense.

00:04:39 --> 00:04:40 Yes.

00:04:40 --> 00:04:41 So yeah, I like it.

00:04:41 --> 00:04:46 But from seeing some of the other pictures in the photo shoot, I can also understand why they were like, no.

00:04:47 --> 00:04:48 Yeah, I can't lie.

00:04:48 --> 00:04:52 I feel like this whole era of artwork was a lot more...

00:04:53 --> 00:04:57 Muted, for lack of a better word, but it's definitely like, here's a psych wall, here's an outfit, put it on, take a picture.

00:04:58 --> 00:04:58 So for me, I get it.

00:04:59 --> 00:05:03 There was a little, I guess, the sense of we strip the color, we make them mature.

00:05:03 --> 00:05:06 You can be mature and have pretty colors.

00:05:07 --> 00:05:07 It's the purple.

00:05:07 --> 00:05:08 Thank God for it.

00:05:10 --> 00:05:10 Yes.

00:05:10 --> 00:05:15 I will say, though, I mean, a lot of the K-pop albums and stuff now also don't have the groups on the cover.

00:05:15 --> 00:05:19 But I heard they do that because fans are like, well, why is this person in the middle?

00:05:19 --> 00:05:22 And how come this person hasn't been in the middle for this long?

00:05:23 --> 00:05:24 Oh, that's hilarious.

00:05:25 --> 00:05:26 I mean, you could argue.

00:05:26 --> 00:05:29 I mean, Nicola has a smaller triangle than the other four do.

00:05:30 --> 00:05:32 You know, so that's what happens.

00:05:32 --> 00:05:32 I kind of get it.

00:05:33 --> 00:05:34 I kind of get it.

00:05:34 --> 00:05:35 You can't figure out how to split that pie.

00:05:35 --> 00:05:37 Probably don't have no pie on the cover.

00:05:37 --> 00:05:38 Oh, man.

00:05:38 --> 00:05:39 She gets the middle at least, though.

00:05:39 --> 00:05:40 Anyway, she does.

00:05:40 --> 00:05:40 My queen.

00:05:40 --> 00:05:40 Yeah.

00:05:42 --> 00:05:43 All right, so let's get into the album.

00:05:44 --> 00:05:46 First up, we have Call the Shots.

00:05:47 --> 00:05:53 This was done by Miranda Cooper, Brian Higgins, Tim Powell, Lisa Cowling, and Giselle Somerville of Zenimania.

00:05:53 --> 00:06:01 And this was released as the second single from the album, hitting number three in the UK singles chart and becoming one of the group's first big radio hits.

00:06:02 --> 00:06:08 And this song was actually originally written a few years prior, and the song sat in the vault for a few years before being released.

00:06:08 --> 00:06:15 But since its release, many of the girls have noted that it is one of their favorites, if not their absolute favorite, Girls Aloud song.

00:06:16 --> 00:06:20 And the song did win the Pop Justice 20-pound music prize, their fourth win in a row.

00:06:21 --> 00:06:26 And the music video was filmed in Malibu, where Nadine had recently moved to at that point.

00:06:32 --> 00:06:33 This one's interesting.

00:06:33 --> 00:06:38 I feel like for me, this is one of the Girls Aloud songs I had to grow to love.

00:06:38 --> 00:06:40 I'm a bit of like a strawberry flavored Pop-Tart.

00:06:41 --> 00:06:44 I like the sugar, the burst of flavor, and the energy.

00:06:44 --> 00:06:46 And this track is a lot more subdued than what I'm used to.

00:06:46 --> 00:06:49 It just sounds mature.

00:06:51 --> 00:06:55 I think that as an opener, by design, it's a slow burn rather than a firework.

00:06:55 --> 00:06:57 And I'm used to firework from them.

00:06:59 --> 00:07:03 And it's so interesting because I think you've referenced this song often as a song that you really enjoy.

00:07:03 --> 00:07:07 I do appreciate how elegant it sounds, even though it's like electro pop.

00:07:08 --> 00:07:11 It's blending that 80s pop shimmer with 90s house undertone.

00:07:12 --> 00:07:13 The lyrics are beautiful.

00:07:14 --> 00:07:31 great it kind of just like letting releasing someone at this point um the lyrics about uh was it the fire that burns inside me a phoenix is rising shout out to kimberly in her one line um god um but yeah the lyric of you you can't if you feel like you can't love me i won't shoot you down it's

00:07:32 --> 00:07:32 Love that.

00:07:32 --> 00:07:34 So it's accepting that you got to let someone go.

00:07:34 --> 00:07:37 Because there's a lot of breakup songs where the person is like, I'm holy, I'm clowing.

00:07:37 --> 00:07:39 I mean, Black Jacks kind of leans towards that.

00:07:39 --> 00:07:40 We'll talk about that later.

00:07:40 --> 00:07:44 But this one's very much like a graceful release.

00:07:44 --> 00:07:48 A breakup song with the recognition that something being over.

00:07:48 --> 00:07:49 Love that for sure.

00:07:50 --> 00:07:51 And shout out to Nicola.

00:07:51 --> 00:07:52 Oh, my baby got a bridge.

00:07:52 --> 00:07:54 I'm a Nicola stan, if you will.

00:07:54 --> 00:07:58 But I do love that her voice is in the middle of all this like...

00:07:59 --> 00:08:03 The other vocalists in this group are like very strong, like earthy kind of sounds.

00:08:03 --> 00:08:08 Cheryl, Nadine, Sarah's higher, but it's more rockier.

00:08:08 --> 00:08:12 And you have Kimba who comes in every so often, which is underutilized.

00:08:13 --> 00:08:14 But she has a nice smoky tone as well.

00:08:15 --> 00:08:17 And then you have Nicola who sounds like innocence.

00:08:18 --> 00:08:19 So I'm like, oh, that's beautiful.

00:08:19 --> 00:08:19 I love it.

00:08:19 --> 00:08:21 It ties everything together really well.

00:08:22 --> 00:08:22 Mm hmm.

00:08:22 --> 00:08:26 Yes, the highlight of the song for sure is Nicola's bridge.

00:08:26 --> 00:08:29 Even our Patreon member Ren also called it out said the bridge is perfect.

00:08:30 --> 00:08:33 Nicola sounds absolutely amazing on it.

00:08:33 --> 00:08:35 Yes, I will never get bored of the song.

00:08:35 --> 00:08:38 I will say I do think sexy no no no should have opened the album.

00:08:40 --> 00:09:06 like just switch the two and I think it still works but you know I get it this was the single so yeah opening the album makes sense but honestly this is up there amongst my favorite girls allowed songs you know depending on the mood I'm in sometimes it is the favorite because it is really beautiful it's lush it's melancholic there's just something very satisfying about the melody I love how the verses feel kind of pensive as well oh

00:09:07 --> 00:09:10 There is just like a lot of depth to it as a pop song.

00:09:10 --> 00:09:13 And it's also very fun to sing along to as well.

00:09:15 --> 00:09:15 Is this true?

00:09:15 --> 00:09:16 I agree.

00:09:16 --> 00:09:17 Yeah.

00:09:17 --> 00:09:19 But yeah, I like how they vocally produced it too.

00:09:19 --> 00:09:24 Because the chorus, you actually have everyone but Nicola actually kind of each leading a line.

00:09:25 --> 00:09:25 Oh, yeah.

00:09:25 --> 00:09:27 So I kind of love that as well.

00:09:27 --> 00:09:32 Because, you know, a lot of the time Nadine is leading all the choruses.

00:09:32 --> 00:09:36 So to have Kimberly lead a line and to have Sarah come out and lead a line, like that's really good.

00:09:37 --> 00:09:41 And also, I love the long that are in the background.

00:09:41 --> 00:09:41 Yeah.

00:09:41 --> 00:09:45 Like it just adds to the kind of ethereal quality as well as a melancholic vibe too.

00:09:45 --> 00:09:47 Because it's also very dreamy.

00:09:48 --> 00:10:06 too yes yeah i think it's a beautiful song i yeah again i'll never get bored of this one for sure uh and then there is the video too which is also very beautiful i will say it makes me a little sad sometimes watching this because this era was kind of the last or i guess the start of

00:10:06 --> 00:10:10 of the group actually kind of starting to fall apart a little bit.

00:10:10 --> 00:10:11 Oh, no.

00:10:11 --> 00:10:23 And I forget if this was in, I forget if this was just in an interview or maybe in Kimberly's biography, but they kind of felt like they needed to go to L.A. because they could feel Nadine kind of starting to pull away.

00:10:24 --> 00:10:25 Yeah.

00:10:25 --> 00:10:28 I mean, moving to, you know, L.A.

00:10:28 --> 00:10:33 In America, period, when you grew up in Ireland, is a little far.

00:10:33 --> 00:10:33 Yeah.

00:10:35 --> 00:10:36 And she got her own manager.

00:10:36 --> 00:10:37 Like, it is a thing.

00:10:37 --> 00:10:40 But yeah, it's a beautiful, beautiful video.

00:10:40 --> 00:10:45 It is nice to see them outside, you know, because most of their videos are in studio.

00:10:45 --> 00:10:47 The beach with the bonfires is really beautiful.

00:10:47 --> 00:10:51 I love that they're wearing that elegant purple, you know, of the album cover.

00:10:52 --> 00:10:55 And then the shots in the house just feel so L.A. You've got the random man.

00:10:56 --> 00:10:57 You've got that orange glow.

00:10:57 --> 00:10:58 Oh, my God.

00:10:58 --> 00:11:00 Yeah, the glare on the screen.

00:11:00 --> 00:11:04 Speaking of that man, honey, honey, honey, he was in that shower for so long.

00:11:04 --> 00:11:06 You run on my light bill, but get out my shower.

00:11:09 --> 00:11:10 It was so funny because Sarah's right there.

00:11:10 --> 00:11:12 He's just standing there.

00:11:12 --> 00:11:14 I'm like, if you don't clean your skin, if you don't give me a little.

00:11:14 --> 00:11:15 I know that's how he's directing.

00:11:15 --> 00:11:16 He's sad.

00:11:16 --> 00:11:17 He's thinking.

00:11:18 --> 00:11:20 You think about how my bills run because you ain't got no money to pay for.

00:11:20 --> 00:11:21 Boy, you better get out of my shower.

00:11:23 --> 00:11:26 I'm totally joking, but I think it's just so funny to have him there.

00:11:27 --> 00:11:28 And then, like, no one else got a love interest.

00:11:28 --> 00:11:33 And then there's a burning picture of a guy that never came around so he had to throw a flower into the pool.

00:11:33 --> 00:11:36 Yeah, I think Nadine is looking at, like, a photo frame or something, right?

00:11:36 --> 00:11:37 Of some other guy.

00:11:37 --> 00:11:39 He has a picture in her hand.

00:11:39 --> 00:11:40 I was like, that was hilarious.

00:11:41 --> 00:11:44 But aside from that, though, aside from that man running up my water bill.

00:11:44 --> 00:11:45 Not my light bill.

00:11:45 --> 00:11:45 I was like, hmm.

00:11:46 --> 00:11:48 They look so grown in this video.

00:11:49 --> 00:11:49 Oh my gosh.

00:11:49 --> 00:11:54 I think the imagery on the beach with the flags and the fire is interesting.

00:11:54 --> 00:12:03 I don't know if it's purposeful, but from what I got from it, it looked like the fire, white flags, this reminds you of passion for self and surrender.

00:12:03 --> 00:12:04 Like it's subtle, but that's what I got from it.

00:12:04 --> 00:12:07 And I'm like, ooh, those scenes, I like the most.

00:12:07 --> 00:12:08 Because the house thing, I'm like, whatever, goodbye.

00:12:09 --> 00:12:11 But like the beach, love it.

00:12:11 --> 00:12:12 Love it.

00:12:12 --> 00:12:15 They have a little CGI moment with Nicholas Bridge with the stars.

00:12:15 --> 00:12:15 Yes.

00:12:15 --> 00:12:18 I was like, oh, come on, technology.

00:12:19 --> 00:12:20 But yeah, I do.

00:12:20 --> 00:12:24 I feel like this is like the most like meh video in terms of like what they could do possibly.

00:12:24 --> 00:12:26 But, but...

00:12:27 --> 00:12:31 considering all things considered is not a terrible video live.

00:12:31 --> 00:12:37 I think it just is, is more of an interesting song for me as opposed to like listening to the track or like watching the video.

00:12:38 --> 00:12:40 I feel like I connect a little bit more cause they emote very well.

00:12:41 --> 00:12:45 Um, when they perform live when they're in the video, they look so fierce, you know, but,

00:12:46 --> 00:12:48 So I love the live performances.

00:12:48 --> 00:12:53 And shout out to Sarah holding down harmonies throughout the live performances.

00:12:53 --> 00:12:54 She's up there.

00:12:54 --> 00:13:00 Yes, and of course the main highlight of the live version is Nadine's big note coming out of Nicola's Bridge.

00:13:01 --> 00:13:01 Yeah.

00:13:02 --> 00:13:07 Which really should be at this point now put on the studio version because now it's like weird when it's not there.

00:13:13 --> 00:13:19 Also, I think the first time I heard this song was during the 10 tour, and that's their messiest live vocal time.

00:13:20 --> 00:13:21 Yeah, that's funny.

00:13:21 --> 00:13:22 You're right.

00:13:22 --> 00:13:23 I think you showed me that tour first.

00:13:24 --> 00:13:25 Yes, you're right.

00:13:25 --> 00:13:27 There are some iconic performances of this, though.

00:13:27 --> 00:13:28 Of course, it is the X Factor.

00:13:28 --> 00:13:33 They finally got to go on the X Factor, which at that point was the biggest show.

00:13:33 --> 00:13:34 Like, if you got on that show, you were almost...

00:13:35 --> 00:13:55 guaranteed a hit right yeah so they did a great job there you could tell they were kind of nervous right like louis walsh just staring at them their original manager on him yeah um so yeah i thought they did great there and then of course the v festival performance where nadine gets attacked by the wasp static tone on the oh a wasp

00:14:03 --> 00:14:28 it's brilliant yeah it's always so euphoric live so this is yeah this is a great one for sure starting off strong what do you rate it i'm gonna give this one a nine hey i have to give this one a ten understandable up next is close to love and this is done by miranda cooper brian higgins ten powell nick cooler lisa cowley and jody lay of xenomania i cannot say i remember the name jody i

00:14:29 --> 00:14:30 She'll show up a few times in this one.

00:14:30 --> 00:14:32 Yeah, it's good for her.

00:14:32 --> 00:14:36 And this is often highlighted as one of Girls Aloud's best album tracks by fans.

00:14:36 --> 00:14:40 And this is the album title's birthplace, Tangled Up.

00:14:40 --> 00:14:42 It comes from the pre-chorus of this song.

00:14:43 --> 00:14:47 And I cannot lie when I say I love that they do that for a lot of their songs.

00:14:47 --> 00:14:50 Like, what would the neighbors say in Love Machine?

00:14:50 --> 00:14:51 It's like, ooh, great title.

00:14:51 --> 00:14:52 Why?

00:14:52 --> 00:14:52 Yes.

00:14:52 --> 00:14:53 Just like it.

00:14:53 --> 00:14:54 So I love that.

00:14:54 --> 00:14:54 Yes.

00:15:00 --> 00:15:03 But yes, I love how the song starts.

00:15:04 --> 00:15:04 Dust.

00:15:05 --> 00:15:07 Yeah, it's so dramatic.

00:15:08 --> 00:15:09 But it's fun.

00:15:09 --> 00:15:14 I think of like models when I see this group and this song just feels like a strutting kind of song.

00:15:14 --> 00:15:15 Totally.

00:15:15 --> 00:15:19 And this song also feels like the record's actual ignition point.

00:15:19 --> 00:15:21 You know, the Kickstarter after Call the Shots.

00:15:21 --> 00:15:24 Things are over, over with that last guy.

00:15:25 --> 00:15:25 Finito.

00:15:25 --> 00:15:27 Okay.

00:15:27 --> 00:15:30 Rocky and intense with silky vocals to start it off.

00:15:30 --> 00:15:30 I like that.

00:15:31 --> 00:15:33 It feels like 80s in the best way, for sure.

00:15:33 --> 00:15:33 Totally.

00:15:33 --> 00:15:37 Yes, it has the full 80s rock sensibility to it, which I love.

00:15:38 --> 00:15:40 There is something very powerful about it.

00:15:40 --> 00:15:43 Like when you listen to it, there's all these layers of synths.

00:15:43 --> 00:15:44 There's all these electric guitars.

00:15:44 --> 00:15:45 It's strong.

00:15:46 --> 00:16:06 for sure and even the way they're singing too like nadine's verse is maybe one of my favorite moments from her vocally yeah she is really like giving it in there there's so much sass in there and then yeah that pre-chorus is one of their best we're gonna need more wood yes that's a that's a highlight i wrote that on the lyrics my lyric notes

00:16:07 --> 00:16:10 I mean, these lyrics are pretty amazing, right?

00:16:10 --> 00:16:16 Like, of course, there's a general meaning of, you know, maybe a relationship where they feel like they can't fully commit.

00:16:16 --> 00:16:19 But then, of course, there's all the sexual innuendo of it all, too.

00:16:19 --> 00:16:21 Yes, yes, yes.

00:16:22 --> 00:16:24 Like, I think it's hysterical.

00:16:25 --> 00:16:26 Because what do you mean?

00:16:26 --> 00:16:27 Or what?

00:16:27 --> 00:16:28 What do you mean?

00:16:28 --> 00:16:33 They got close to the love, but didn't quite get there.

00:16:33 --> 00:16:33 Which I appreciate.

00:16:33 --> 00:16:35 I think I've posted this before.

00:16:35 --> 00:16:44 I felt like their songs, when you first let me hear their stuff, I said, I feel like their music really resonates with me because it's like, I don't mean to tease, but I'm just like, something's just not there.

00:16:44 --> 00:16:47 I'm like, this close may be kind of sore to something.

00:16:47 --> 00:16:48 It just never happened.

00:16:48 --> 00:16:50 Or like, something wasn't right.

00:16:50 --> 00:16:52 But the manner made my animal kick.

00:16:52 --> 00:16:53 I felt that once in a while.

00:16:53 --> 00:16:54 I'm like, wow.

00:16:54 --> 00:16:55 You know what?

00:16:55 --> 00:16:55 Maybe.

00:16:55 --> 00:16:57 I might.

00:16:57 --> 00:16:58 And then it doesn't happen.

00:16:58 --> 00:16:58 So close.

00:16:59 --> 00:16:59 So close.

00:17:01 --> 00:17:04 But yes, I think the song could be super simple, but it could be super naughty.

00:17:05 --> 00:17:05 Close to love.

00:17:05 --> 00:17:06 Couldn't steal the deal.

00:17:07 --> 00:17:08 Great tagline moment.

00:17:08 --> 00:17:11 And I do wonder, like, listening to their music, if, like, liking...

00:17:11 --> 00:17:12 I liked K-pop first.

00:17:13 --> 00:17:17 Does it make this song, make their music even more easier to digest?

00:17:17 --> 00:17:23 And vice versa, for you, for listening to GA for so long, does it make you more open to the randomization of K-pop?

00:17:24 --> 00:17:26 It's so interesting how the structure is.

00:17:26 --> 00:17:27 You know, it's so fun.

00:17:28 --> 00:17:32 I feel like it's like a polished version of what they were doing in the earlier days, for sure.

00:17:32 --> 00:17:51 totally album is honestly yes specifically yeah i do think the chorus is an interesting one i like the chorus but i actually think i prefer all the verses and the hooks and stuff just because the verses are just so good they're damn good yeah yeah and that outro as well guy with the terrible hair

00:17:52 --> 00:18:12 back off you know it's so much fun it's just so much there guy is the best one though he's hot there's no other like there's no other thing like he's literally something's wrong with him chemical stare have you guys ever got stared at by like a like a you know tweaking when they're tweaking there's nothing there

00:18:14 --> 00:18:15 Just pupils.

00:18:15 --> 00:18:16 Oh my gosh.

00:18:16 --> 00:18:17 It's a mess.

00:18:17 --> 00:18:17 Yes.

00:18:17 --> 00:18:18 It's a mess.

00:18:18 --> 00:18:21 We did get an alternative version with this brand new deluxe as well.

00:18:21 --> 00:18:23 It's even more 80s with the production.

00:18:23 --> 00:18:25 And some of the alternative verses are fun.

00:18:25 --> 00:18:28 And Kimberly gets this little talky moment to end the song, which I like.

00:18:34 --> 00:18:56 yeah and i took a while away from her golly jesus well she gets actually quite a decent amount in this one for sure she does i will say she does for all my jokes about kimberly not getting any lines i do have some written in this story written in the podcast episode she got a lot more of this yes yes she's part of the group too guys thank you what did you think of the tour performance

00:18:57 --> 00:18:58 Oh, my gosh.

00:18:59 --> 00:19:01 I think I really enjoy watching them perform.

00:19:01 --> 00:19:04 I feel like there's, like, their peak in terms of, like, their energy.

00:19:04 --> 00:19:06 And everything just felt so good.

00:19:06 --> 00:19:07 You know?

00:19:07 --> 00:19:09 Like, now they're seasoned.

00:19:09 --> 00:19:11 I love the outfits.

00:19:11 --> 00:19:12 It's just fun.

00:19:12 --> 00:19:17 And I think them performing with the guys and having them be like, ha, ha, ha.

00:19:17 --> 00:19:19 be the guy to the chemical stare and the terrible hair.

00:19:19 --> 00:19:20 It just, it makes it fun.

00:19:21 --> 00:19:23 Like, I feel like the girls actually like this song.

00:19:23 --> 00:19:24 Yeah.

00:19:24 --> 00:19:25 A lot.

00:19:25 --> 00:19:28 Maybe I like it now, but at the time, it just, again, everything just felt right.

00:19:28 --> 00:19:30 And I feel like they're watching their performance.

00:19:30 --> 00:19:33 So I think we started watching their tours before I got into the albums.

00:19:33 --> 00:19:33 That's right.

00:19:33 --> 00:19:37 This made me like the song because of their performance.

00:19:37 --> 00:19:38 So that's really important.

00:19:39 --> 00:19:40 Yes, for sure.

00:19:40 --> 00:19:43 I think it's one of the best performances of that show.

00:19:43 --> 00:19:47 Like the dynamic with the dancers, the overall teen is just so much fun.

00:19:47 --> 00:19:49 It's really well choreographed as well.

00:19:49 --> 00:19:51 It's super dynamic.

00:19:51 --> 00:19:53 And the band was going off too.

00:19:53 --> 00:19:54 Like the electric guitar band.

00:19:55 --> 00:19:56 They were killing it.

00:19:56 --> 00:19:57 It sounded so good.

00:19:58 --> 00:20:00 And I love the extra harmonies we got as well.

00:20:00 --> 00:20:01 Like the whole outro.

00:20:01 --> 00:20:03 We get almost, we get a three-part harmony with that.

00:20:03 --> 00:20:04 Beat it.

00:20:04 --> 00:20:04 Yeah.

00:20:04 --> 00:20:06 You know.

00:20:11 --> 00:20:11 Yeah.

00:20:11 --> 00:20:17 Also, whenever I hear the outro of this song, I think of the tour performance because I do that little walk back with the back and the hip hiss.

00:20:18 --> 00:20:20 I always think of that.

00:20:20 --> 00:20:21 I picture that when I listen to this song.

00:20:22 --> 00:20:22 Yes.

00:20:22 --> 00:20:23 Oh, man.

00:20:23 --> 00:20:23 But I agree with you.

00:20:24 --> 00:20:27 I think the performance turned this song into a 10 for me.

00:20:28 --> 00:20:29 Uh-huh.

00:20:29 --> 00:20:29 Yes.

00:20:30 --> 00:20:31 This one's a tangled up 10 for me, too.

00:20:32 --> 00:20:32 Yeah.

00:20:34 --> 00:20:36 Next we have Sexy No No No.

00:20:37 --> 00:21:04 sung by me obviously y'all heard me in the intro if you still made it this far and this was done by carla marie tim powell brian higgins matt gray lisa cowling miranda cooper nick kohler myra boyle dan decafferty daryl sweet manny charlton pete agnew and all five members of girls allowed and the reason that there are some non-zenomania names here is that this song samples hair of the dog by nazareth

00:21:09 --> 00:21:14 And this was released as the first single from the album, hitting number five in the UK singles chart.

00:21:14 --> 00:21:17 And it features the group's most artistic music video yet.

00:21:18 --> 00:21:25 And for our listener, Ren, this is one of his, or no, this is his favorite Girls Aloud single ever.

00:21:25 --> 00:21:29 He says, it's bonkers, sexy, messy, and fun in all the best ways possible.

00:21:29 --> 00:21:32 Everything you want from a Girls Aloud single.

00:21:32 --> 00:21:33 Cheryl's intro is perfect.

00:21:33 --> 00:21:35 And the video is iconic.

00:21:42 --> 00:21:42 Yeah, yeah.

00:21:42 --> 00:21:43 Okay, isn't it?

00:21:43 --> 00:21:46 Come on now.

00:21:46 --> 00:21:47 Yes.

00:21:47 --> 00:21:53 So I remember when this song first came out and I heard that intro with the creepy synths in the back.

00:21:54 --> 00:21:55 Yeah.

00:21:55 --> 00:21:56 All that tension.

00:21:56 --> 00:21:57 And I was like, oh my gosh.

00:21:57 --> 00:21:59 It's like they took something kind of ooh.

00:22:00 --> 00:22:01 And we're like, we're going to amp it up.

00:22:02 --> 00:22:02 10x.

00:22:05 --> 00:22:09 With the hair of the dog electric guitar riff, which is such a great idea.

00:22:09 --> 00:22:11 That's such a cool sample to have.

00:22:11 --> 00:22:18 You get this really beautiful, intense, kind of rocky, electropunk situation.

00:22:19 --> 00:22:21 And the chorus is so weird.

00:22:22 --> 00:22:24 but amazing and very catchy.

00:22:25 --> 00:22:25 Yeah.

00:22:25 --> 00:22:25 You know?

00:22:26 --> 00:22:28 Yeah, I love the distorted synths in it.

00:22:28 --> 00:22:30 It almost sounds like your speaker's gonna blow out.

00:22:31 --> 00:22:34 And the whole structure is just, again, very weird.

00:22:34 --> 00:22:41 Like, you kind of have a verse, and, like, yes, there's a chorus, but, like, it all just kind of comes randomly.

00:22:41 --> 00:22:46 So I feel like it's one of those songs where it's hard not to just, like, pay attention when the song is on.

00:22:47 --> 00:22:49 Like, this is not a song for me that I can have on in the background.

00:22:49 --> 00:22:50 Yeah.

00:22:50 --> 00:22:55 And while I'm doing other stuff, like I will be distracted by all the stuff happening.

00:22:55 --> 00:22:56 Yeah.

00:22:57 --> 00:23:00 You have to sing along to every single part.

00:23:00 --> 00:23:01 What do you mean?

00:23:01 --> 00:23:02 What do you mean?

00:23:02 --> 00:23:04 The song is the most biological as it gets.

00:23:05 --> 00:23:12 Biology, I mean, but like it's the most biological that it gets on this album where it's like, you have this crazy structure.

00:23:12 --> 00:23:16 It's a genre stunt that definitely is,

00:23:17 --> 00:23:20 Sorry, it's a genre stunt more than it needs to be dissected.

00:23:20 --> 00:23:28 But since we are a review channel, the song is giving, I want you, I can want you more, but you're not giving me anything to even get damp for.

00:23:29 --> 00:23:29 Put the work in.

00:23:29 --> 00:23:32 However, however, we shouldn't rush into things.

00:23:32 --> 00:23:33 Let's get to know each other.

00:23:33 --> 00:23:34 Like there's so many.

00:23:35 --> 00:23:35 Uh-huh.

00:23:35 --> 00:23:35 Yeah.

00:23:38 --> 00:23:38 I love this song.

00:23:39 --> 00:23:40 So Ren, I agree.

00:23:40 --> 00:23:41 I agree.

00:23:41 --> 00:23:41 I agree.

00:23:41 --> 00:23:42 I agree.

00:23:42 --> 00:23:42 I agree.

00:23:42 --> 00:23:45 I think I told you that I like this song a lot.

00:23:45 --> 00:23:46 I don't know.

00:23:46 --> 00:23:48 Maybe this is one of those songs that we sat down watching the tour.

00:23:48 --> 00:23:49 I was like, oh my God, this is so me.

00:23:50 --> 00:23:51 I think I did.

00:23:51 --> 00:23:52 I was like, this is so me.

00:23:52 --> 00:23:59 I used this song for my pride parade, demisexual flag mural that I made.

00:23:59 --> 00:24:01 So I like this song for those reasons.

00:24:01 --> 00:24:05 Also, I just think it's so entertaining to hear all of this actual, like singing.

00:24:05 --> 00:24:07 These girls were singing down on this.

00:24:07 --> 00:24:08 Like, that's the thing.

00:24:08 --> 00:24:11 It wasn't like, they were just like, here's a catchy little top line.

00:24:11 --> 00:24:12 Um, yeah,

00:24:12 --> 00:24:14 It's actual vocals.

00:24:14 --> 00:24:15 Even Cheryl.

00:24:15 --> 00:24:17 Cheryl does not play in the live.

00:24:17 --> 00:24:19 She's like, I don't need you to put an effect on my voice.

00:24:19 --> 00:24:23 I'll go, because I've been sitting.

00:24:23 --> 00:24:24 Yes.

00:24:25 --> 00:24:27 She gives it a whole throat, okay?

00:24:27 --> 00:24:28 So I appreciate it.

00:24:28 --> 00:24:31 Even when she's been sick, I love hearing her do it either because she'll go in for it.

00:24:33 --> 00:24:38 And it's interesting hearing the development, the developmental version or the developing version, whatever you want to call it.

00:24:39 --> 00:24:45 And then the alternate version, because the development version, Jesus Christ, can't say the big word, apparently.

00:24:45 --> 00:24:46 It's a big word for Elmo.

00:24:47 --> 00:24:51 The production is so meh, in a sense.

00:24:51 --> 00:24:51 Yeah.

00:24:51 --> 00:24:52 It's so funny.

00:25:00 --> 00:25:00 It's wonky.

00:25:00 --> 00:25:04 And then the alternate version has lyrics that make sense, right?

00:25:04 --> 00:25:05 I'll make it for you.

00:25:05 --> 00:25:06 And all that stuff.

00:25:06 --> 00:25:07 And the cat at the zoo.

00:25:08 --> 00:25:11 You can hear the auto-tune on it, though.

00:25:11 --> 00:25:12 It feels like a demo.

00:25:17 --> 00:25:19 But it makes sense though, right?

00:25:19 --> 00:25:20 It makes sense.

00:25:20 --> 00:25:25 Like the final version put the pieces together with all the stronger melodies and top lines.

00:25:26 --> 00:25:28 But the alternate version has the full story.

00:25:28 --> 00:25:31 So yeah, I do appreciate it for sure.

00:25:31 --> 00:25:33 And Kimberly, were you here?

00:25:34 --> 00:25:35 Kimberly, hello.

00:25:35 --> 00:25:36 Were you here for this one?

00:25:36 --> 00:25:37 Yeah, the kisses.

00:25:37 --> 00:25:38 That's what she gets.

00:25:38 --> 00:25:41 Oh, no, she gets the first... She gets part of the first verse.

00:25:42 --> 00:25:42 She does.

00:25:42 --> 00:25:43 She does.

00:25:43 --> 00:25:43 She does.

00:25:43 --> 00:25:43 She does.

00:25:44 --> 00:25:45 I'm just teasing.

00:25:45 --> 00:25:46 I'm just teasing.

00:25:46 --> 00:25:47 But I feel like the song is so powerful.

00:25:48 --> 00:25:49 I hate when they have the lip syncing.

00:25:49 --> 00:25:53 Like, there's a live version on GMTV where Nadine, terrible lip syncing.

00:25:53 --> 00:25:55 She said, head back.

00:25:56 --> 00:25:57 Mic is still on.

00:25:57 --> 00:25:58 Well, supposedly on.

00:25:58 --> 00:26:00 Head is gone from the microphone.

00:26:00 --> 00:26:00 Yeah.

00:26:00 --> 00:26:02 I was like, girl.

00:26:03 --> 00:26:03 You know what?

00:26:03 --> 00:26:05 It was like six in the morning for them.

00:26:05 --> 00:26:05 It's okay.

00:26:06 --> 00:26:06 For GMTV.

00:26:06 --> 00:26:12 No, when you're a good live singer, like when you're a better live singer, I've noticed that the lip singing is a little bit like, meh.

00:26:12 --> 00:26:13 That's fair.

00:26:13 --> 00:26:16 I'm pretty sure Tessna was probably doing her breathing singing, which I respect.

00:26:17 --> 00:26:17 Yeah.

00:26:18 --> 00:26:19 Oh, man.

00:26:19 --> 00:26:20 Wow.

00:26:20 --> 00:26:20 Breathing.

00:26:20 --> 00:26:21 Let's think it's hard.

00:26:21 --> 00:26:21 Let's think it's hard.

00:26:22 --> 00:26:22 I'll give him that.

00:26:22 --> 00:26:22 It's hard.

00:26:22 --> 00:26:29 Oh, I will say before we go to the live performances, the alt version that they released, Nicola, sounds amazing on that new verse.

00:26:30 --> 00:26:32 But also Nadine's rap at the end.

00:26:32 --> 00:26:34 It's hilarious.

00:26:34 --> 00:26:37 I love that we kept making her rap, even though she said she hates it.

00:26:37 --> 00:26:45 You want to give us a demonstration?

00:26:45 --> 00:26:45 Go ahead.

00:26:45 --> 00:26:46 Go ahead, Chris.

00:26:46 --> 00:26:46 Nope.

00:26:46 --> 00:26:48 Let's talk about the music video.

00:26:49 --> 00:26:50 Oh, yes.

00:26:50 --> 00:26:51 The fighter copy.

00:26:51 --> 00:26:52 Yes.

00:26:55 --> 00:26:55 You know what?

00:26:56 --> 00:27:04 For all the little like, ha ha ha looks like fighter, the gothic, you know, this gothic imagery and the stark contrast between black and white and red.

00:27:04 --> 00:27:07 It's a beautiful juxtaposition.

00:27:07 --> 00:27:15 So being able to duplicate the imagery, but then adding these amazing inflatable red dresses.

00:27:16 --> 00:27:17 They weren't doing that in Fighter.

00:27:17 --> 00:27:18 They had her in a glass.

00:27:19 --> 00:27:20 Okay?

00:27:20 --> 00:27:24 They had Christina in a glass fighting for air for her life.

00:27:25 --> 00:27:27 Girls Aloud had the air in their dress.

00:27:27 --> 00:27:28 You know what I'm saying?

00:27:28 --> 00:27:32 Like, I... Yeah.

00:27:32 --> 00:27:33 It's iconic.

00:27:33 --> 00:27:34 Like, I would love to have...

00:27:37 --> 00:27:39 I'd love to have five sexy balloon women singing at me.

00:27:40 --> 00:27:42 And it's so crazy because it's like... We had four of them at the tour.

00:27:42 --> 00:27:42 Yeah.

00:27:43 --> 00:27:44 This is true.

00:27:44 --> 00:27:44 This is true.

00:27:44 --> 00:27:45 I take my four.

00:27:45 --> 00:27:48 But it's so interesting because, like, the single cover does nothing.

00:27:48 --> 00:27:52 It's like, here's an acrylic pole and us in white and tank tops and jeans.

00:27:53 --> 00:27:54 That video is amazing.

00:27:54 --> 00:27:56 Like, it's just amazing.

00:27:56 --> 00:27:57 And the makeup?

00:27:57 --> 00:27:58 Love it now.

00:27:58 --> 00:27:59 Oh, yeah.

00:27:59 --> 00:28:00 The eyelashes?

00:28:00 --> 00:28:00 Yes.

00:28:00 --> 00:28:01 Very cool.

00:28:01 --> 00:28:01 Very cool.

00:28:01 --> 00:28:25 like the uh shout out to the graphic liner that the makeup artist did you guys they looked gorgeous they looked so cool but yeah iconic with the yeah i mean definitely a step up like yeah you have to remember we had the something kind of video not that long before this which is not their best we had walk this way which you know yeah i mean sarah and adine couldn't even show up on the same day as the other three you

00:28:28 --> 00:28:55 and none of them could show up on the same day as the sugar babes like it was just such a weird situation um so this was a huge step up for them it's such a great video they look so great um i love the close-ups on the needles and the sewing machines those shots of them just kind of avoiding the needles as they come through are so so cool it just feels more polished and they do get tangled up in the ropes at the end which was a nice little tease as well so so yeah i think it's a great video

00:28:58 --> 00:29:04 And then now with the live performances, I mean, luckily they did actually get to sing live for most of them.

00:29:04 --> 00:29:08 Like it was just some of those morning ones, I think that the mics aren't even real at some of those studios.

00:29:09 --> 00:29:10 But I love this dance routine.

00:29:11 --> 00:29:13 I love that it's kind of very...

00:29:13 --> 00:29:15 A lot of it's actually quite still.

00:29:15 --> 00:29:18 Like it's kind of them just kind of here moving their, you know, moving their hands and stuff.

00:29:18 --> 00:29:23 And they're just kind of walking and then posing and like a couple hip hits here or there.

00:29:24 --> 00:29:26 Great use of the V formation a couple times.

00:29:26 --> 00:29:28 It's all V. You know.

00:29:29 --> 00:29:32 And of course, there are iconic tour versions as well.

00:29:33 --> 00:29:43 yeah yeah it opened the tangled up tour you know with them hanging down yeah like superheroes which that must have been such a cool moment live i'm so sad i didn't get to go to that tour um

00:29:45 --> 00:29:46 I didn't even know who they were.

00:29:47 --> 00:29:48 Right.

00:29:48 --> 00:29:50 And I was too young to travel alone.

00:29:51 --> 00:29:58 But live, this song with a live band with the guitars is just so cool.

00:29:58 --> 00:30:01 Like, I love the out of control tour version.

00:30:02 --> 00:30:03 There's all the smoke and wind.

00:30:03 --> 00:30:06 There's a percussionist like going off on the bongos.

00:30:06 --> 00:30:11 You know, they sample Rihanna's Disturbia for this little dance break.

00:30:11 --> 00:30:13 And Nadine does the best ending.

00:30:13 --> 00:30:16 She does, hell yeah, yeah, yeah.

00:30:16 --> 00:30:18 I think it's like the most like extra ending.

00:30:19 --> 00:30:19 It's amazing.

00:30:25 --> 00:30:26 It is so amazing.

00:30:27 --> 00:30:28 Oh man.

00:30:28 --> 00:30:29 She is amazing.

00:30:29 --> 00:30:33 Here's the thing, I hate listening to her and them period do things live, cause I'll copy it.

00:30:33 --> 00:30:34 I'm like, that's not on the record, is it?

00:30:35 --> 00:30:35 Sounded crazy.

00:30:35 --> 00:30:36 Oh, I end the song like that now.

00:30:36 --> 00:30:38 I know it fades out, so it's just me.

00:30:38 --> 00:30:39 Yeah, yeah, yeah.

00:30:42 --> 00:30:42 Oh, man.

00:30:42 --> 00:30:46 Yeah, I will say with a tangled up tour, because obviously we're going to mention a lot of these performances.

00:30:46 --> 00:30:46 Yeah.

00:30:46 --> 00:30:49 I recently just watched it, like the whole thing again.

00:30:50 --> 00:30:50 Without me.

00:30:51 --> 00:30:52 Yeah, sorry.

00:30:52 --> 00:30:54 Of course, this tour is amazing.

00:30:54 --> 00:30:54 I agree with you.

00:30:54 --> 00:30:56 It's their, like, performance peak.

00:30:56 --> 00:30:58 It's their, like, chemistry peak as a group.

00:30:58 --> 00:30:58 Yeah.

00:30:59 --> 00:31:02 But the sound on this live DVD is so terrible.

00:31:02 --> 00:31:07 Like, the band sounds amazing, but there was definitely something weird going on with Nadine's mic.

00:31:07 --> 00:31:08 Like, she sounds distorted.

00:31:08 --> 00:31:10 Some of it sounds dubbed, like, over.

00:31:11 --> 00:31:15 And they even just, like, with a whole lot of history, they just completely just used the studio version of her vocal.

00:31:15 --> 00:31:17 Like, something was wrong, for sure.

00:31:18 --> 00:31:18 But...

00:31:18 --> 00:31:23 As a show, it was amazing, but it just kind of sucks that the sound just didn't work out that night.

00:31:23 --> 00:31:24 Yeah.

00:31:24 --> 00:31:26 Oh, my goodness.

00:31:26 --> 00:31:29 But all that aside, though, what do you give this song?

00:31:29 --> 00:31:30 Has to be a 10.

00:31:31 --> 00:31:33 Yeah, this is a 10 from me as well.

00:31:33 --> 00:31:34 Oh, man.

00:31:34 --> 00:31:36 Up next is Girl Overboard.

00:31:36 --> 00:31:40 And this is done by Miranda Cooper, Brian Higgins, Tim Powell, Nick Kohler, and Jodi Lay of Xenomania.

00:31:40 --> 00:31:43 And all five members of Girls Aloud.

00:31:43 --> 00:31:46 And this is known as the group's most beloved album tracks.

00:31:46 --> 00:31:51 And the song was recently included on the 2024 Girls Aloud show set list, which we went to go see.

00:31:51 --> 00:31:52 Yes, we did.

00:31:58 --> 00:31:59 And I love this song.

00:32:00 --> 00:32:01 Yes, you do.

00:32:01 --> 00:32:02 Yes, you do.

00:32:02 --> 00:32:04 So this being on the set list was for me.

00:32:04 --> 00:32:05 Thank you, girls.

00:32:07 --> 00:32:11 Do you think Girl Overboard deserves to be one of their most beloved album tracks?

00:32:12 --> 00:32:13 Yeah, I think this one is fun.

00:32:13 --> 00:32:16 I feel like the chorus is definitely something that's really fun to sing.

00:32:17 --> 00:32:20 This feels like the show's bolder cousin sonically.

00:32:20 --> 00:32:26 I enjoy this song so much that I reference it when I lose control of something silly happens.

00:32:26 --> 00:32:28 Like, oops, that didn't go the way I expected.

00:32:28 --> 00:32:30 Get off a butt!

00:32:30 --> 00:32:30 I just sang that part.

00:32:31 --> 00:32:59 i thought i had it but you know what i'm saying it's just fun i think it's the melody of the the the song that actually sits with you in your head um the words are just fun and around to sing to girl overboard like the melody itself is really fun um and i think shout out to i think sorry and i think that this track has some interesting lines like kimberly saying give me something i

00:33:02 --> 00:33:21 what do you mean what do you mean by that um but yes this song is is again we're gonna talk about the lyrics because usually i don't really understand what they're talking about but for this one it feels a little bit more clear it's like it's about whoever got the best of them has disoriented them like i thought i had this under control i thought that what was going on between us was like clear but it's not apparently

00:33:21 --> 00:33:28 It's like this 80s electro Euro dance track about falling from grace and losing grip on something you thought you had in the bag.

00:33:28 --> 00:33:30 And I have been there myself.

00:33:30 --> 00:33:32 Woo, that's not fun.

00:33:32 --> 00:33:34 But this song makes you seem like it's fun.

00:33:37 --> 00:33:37 Like you're on a boat.

00:33:37 --> 00:33:39 Oh my God, we're going to capsize.

00:33:39 --> 00:33:40 Like, oh, but there's a girl overboard.

00:33:40 --> 00:33:41 Someone's going to save her.

00:33:41 --> 00:33:43 Like, I don't think she ever gets saved, right?

00:33:43 --> 00:33:44 Like, ever.

00:33:44 --> 00:33:45 No.

00:33:45 --> 00:33:45 You know?

00:33:45 --> 00:33:47 Hills are ready, light on the way.

00:33:47 --> 00:33:48 Oh, she's floating away.

00:33:48 --> 00:33:49 You know?

00:33:49 --> 00:33:50 From the boat.

00:33:50 --> 00:33:51 Oh my gosh.

00:33:52 --> 00:33:53 Oh, man.

00:33:53 --> 00:33:56 Yeah, I do think if this album had a fourth single, it should have been this.

00:33:57 --> 00:34:02 I know there's a lot of people that are teen close to love that I would be teen girl overboard.

00:34:02 --> 00:34:07 This was an instant favorite for me on this album when I first heard it all those years ago.

00:34:07 --> 00:34:12 And yeah, again, the production that just has so much energy to so many beautiful layers of sense.

00:34:13 --> 00:34:15 Like it just sounds so nice.

00:34:16 --> 00:34:17 when you're listening to it.

00:34:18 --> 00:34:24 It's like, and the song is a bit more accessible, I think, because it's a bit more of a traditional pop structure.

00:34:26 --> 00:34:32 And the vocal execution, again, like Nadine and Kimberly on those verses, it's so good.

00:34:32 --> 00:34:34 Again, just so much sass, so much attitude.

00:34:34 --> 00:34:38 Then you get this kind of pensive pre-chorus, Ruchero and Nicola.

00:34:40 --> 00:34:42 And yeah, the whole concept of Girl Overboard is just fun on its own.

00:34:43 --> 00:34:44 Like, what do you mean?

00:34:44 --> 00:34:44 You know?

00:34:45 --> 00:35:08 what do you mean where's he going yeah floating away right we did get an alt version of this one as well for this new deluxe edition and then you get these you get this piano led kind of synthy electric guitar situation which is interesting i'd much prefer the the final one but it's interesting to see what could have been yeah yeah yeah what do you think of the live version

00:35:09 --> 00:35:10 Oh, okay.

00:35:10 --> 00:35:12 So now, this is one of the other songs.

00:35:13 --> 00:35:16 I think because of a live performance, it makes you go, oh, this is fun.

00:35:16 --> 00:35:17 I like this.

00:35:18 --> 00:35:18 Right?

00:35:18 --> 00:35:25 So I think I like hearing them sing live because their personalities really just shine through.

00:35:25 --> 00:35:28 Like, Nicola and Sarah's bridge have energy.

00:35:29 --> 00:35:31 But Dan's break was super fun.

00:35:31 --> 00:35:33 It's both unfortunate and kind of fun.

00:35:33 --> 00:35:34 Yeah.

00:35:34 --> 00:35:35 That they stopped her.

00:35:35 --> 00:35:36 Grabbing the leg.

00:35:38 --> 00:35:39 Pose, pose, pose.

00:35:39 --> 00:35:40 Yeah, yeah.

00:35:40 --> 00:35:44 Now it's like a reach, you know, from a reach back on the show tour.

00:35:44 --> 00:35:45 Yeah.

00:35:45 --> 00:35:46 So I was like, okay.

00:35:46 --> 00:35:49 I kind of missed the OG dance break, but I totally get it.

00:35:49 --> 00:35:56 But yeah, I think I prefer their personalities on the live version that I do on the recording.

00:35:56 --> 00:35:56 Yeah.

00:35:56 --> 00:36:18 um doesn't mean the song is like bad on its own but i think just you get to hear it you get to kind of like they feel like they're being a little bit more cheekier when they're performing it too oh yeah so i appreciate a little bit more you know and then vocally sarah's high harmonies oh my god i thought i stumbled yeah so it's so good it's so so good

00:36:25 --> 00:36:26 And it adds so much energy, but I love it.

00:36:27 --> 00:36:28 Tumble!

00:36:28 --> 00:36:28 Yes!

00:36:28 --> 00:36:29 She's just going off.

00:36:29 --> 00:36:31 That was funny.

00:36:31 --> 00:36:35 But yeah, I actually love the Tangled Up live version.

00:36:35 --> 00:36:37 I like that most of it's actually quite free for them.

00:36:37 --> 00:36:40 They're kind of just vibing along and going to each side of the stage and stuff.

00:36:40 --> 00:36:45 So then when you get those little dance moments, it makes them a little bit more special.

00:36:47 --> 00:36:52 Yeah, like I said, I am very glad this ended up on the Girls Aloud show tour set list.

00:36:53 --> 00:36:57 They really knew what we wanted, you know, and we got this beautiful version with this like extra intro.

00:36:57 --> 00:37:00 We got Kimberly doing that lower octave there.

00:37:01 --> 00:37:05 It was pretty cool to watch the dancers like swarming around them like an ocean, you know.

00:37:05 --> 00:37:06 Swarming around them, yes.

00:37:06 --> 00:37:07 Yeah, that's the word.

00:37:07 --> 00:37:08 No, that's the right word for it.

00:37:08 --> 00:37:09 It was like a swarm of men.

00:37:11 --> 00:37:14 But yeah, this one's up there as one of my absolute favorite Girls Aloud songs.

00:37:14 --> 00:37:15 So it's another 10.

00:37:16 --> 00:37:17 Dun, dun, dun.

00:37:17 --> 00:37:18 All right.

00:37:18 --> 00:37:22 So for me, this one is a, ooh, I'll give it a 9.5.

00:37:22 --> 00:37:24 Okay.

00:37:26 --> 00:37:28 Next up is Can't Speak French.

00:37:29 --> 00:37:37 And this was done by Miranda Cooper, Brian Higgins, Tim Powell, Nick Kohler, Jodi Lay, and Carla Marie of Zenomania.

00:37:37 --> 00:37:42 And this was released as the third and final single from the album, peaking at number nine in the UK singles chart.

00:37:43 --> 00:37:48 and their group recorded a cheeky French version, Je Ne Parle Pas Français, as a B-side for the single.

00:37:48 --> 00:38:04 I can't speak French, so I'll let the funky music do the talking, talking.

00:38:17 --> 00:38:18 That was the intro to Girls Aloud.

00:38:18 --> 00:38:19 That was the intro to Girls Aloud.

00:38:20 --> 00:38:34 Mmm.

00:38:47 --> 00:38:48 It was, yeah.

00:38:48 --> 00:38:56 Yeah.

00:39:38 --> 00:39:38 Mm-hmm.

00:40:12 --> 00:40:19 Yeah, I mean, the chart position, I don't think you can actually fully look at it that way because the download era had started already.

00:40:19 --> 00:40:20 So the album was already out.

00:40:21 --> 00:40:23 So yeah, you can't look at...

00:40:23 --> 00:40:27 This is when kind of top 10 and stuff didn't matter as much.

00:40:28 --> 00:40:29 Starting at least, yeah.

00:40:34 --> 00:40:34 Yeah.

00:40:34 --> 00:40:34 Right.

00:40:36 --> 00:40:36 Right.

00:40:52 --> 00:40:53 You don't need to defend yourself, remember?

00:41:10 --> 00:41:10 Yes.

00:41:14 --> 00:41:15 My answer is yes.

00:41:19 --> 00:41:20 Oh, man.

00:41:20 --> 00:41:22 Of course I'm biased because I love Girls Aloud.

00:41:23 --> 00:41:27 But I am happily being biased.

00:41:28 --> 00:41:30 I think this is a beautiful pop song.

00:41:30 --> 00:41:37 And actually, a lot of my friends who don't know Girls Aloud as well often list this as their favorite.

00:41:37 --> 00:41:42 Or even if they don't really even like some of the other songs, this is one of the ones that they like.

00:41:44 --> 00:41:44 Yeah.

00:41:45 --> 00:41:45 Right.

00:41:47 --> 00:41:50 Yeah, I have a few friends that they're always just like, oh, yeah, I can't speak French.

00:41:50 --> 00:41:52 They won't know Sound of the Underground or Love Machine or anything else.

00:41:52 --> 00:41:53 Yeah.

00:41:54 --> 00:42:00 So I think there is something about this that is accessible, and it works for people as a pop song.

00:42:02 --> 00:42:04 Because, you know, it's definitely not as weird as sexy.

00:42:04 --> 00:42:05 No, no, no.

00:42:07 --> 00:42:10 And there's something just so beautiful about it again.

00:42:10 --> 00:42:12 Like, yes, there is a funkiness to it.

00:42:12 --> 00:42:13 There's a bounciness to it.

00:42:13 --> 00:42:24 But I think that lushness, right, along with that kind of, yeah, that breathy vocal delivery, the like slinkiness of the whole thing, there is something appealing about it, I think.

00:42:24 --> 00:42:28 And then the chorus has this kind of silliness to it as well.

00:42:28 --> 00:42:29 But I think also just...

00:42:30 --> 00:42:32 I don't know, it gets in your head, you know?

00:42:33 --> 00:42:34 So I'm here for it.

00:42:34 --> 00:42:36 I think it is peak.

00:42:37 --> 00:42:39 And I also have a note though about the structure, right?

00:42:39 --> 00:42:41 You get like a really long verse.

00:42:44 --> 00:42:47 And then poor Nicolet only gets like five words in it this time.

00:42:48 --> 00:42:50 But Kimberly gets lines though.

00:42:50 --> 00:42:51 Yes, she does.

00:42:52 --> 00:42:53 I do.

00:42:53 --> 00:42:54 Exactly.

00:42:54 --> 00:42:55 Some of the best vocals.

00:43:00 --> 00:43:01 Yeah, she does.

00:43:01 --> 00:43:03 Of hers.

00:43:04 --> 00:43:08 You got Cheryl's beautiful post-chorus where she sounds very delicate.

00:43:08 --> 00:43:08 Yeah.

00:43:08 --> 00:43:09 Oh, no.

00:43:09 --> 00:43:10 That's Nadine.

00:43:11 --> 00:43:11 My bad.

00:43:11 --> 00:43:12 I heard Nadine in my head.

00:43:12 --> 00:43:13 I didn't hear Cheryl.

00:43:13 --> 00:43:14 I gotta let you know.

00:43:14 --> 00:43:15 Yeah.

00:43:15 --> 00:43:16 You're my sensation.

00:43:16 --> 00:43:17 I gotta hear.

00:43:17 --> 00:43:17 I got it.

00:43:17 --> 00:43:17 My bad.

00:43:17 --> 00:43:18 I'll do it right next time.

00:43:18 --> 00:43:20 You do it and call somebody else out.

00:43:20 --> 00:43:20 I'll do better.

00:43:20 --> 00:43:21 Uh-huh.

00:43:21 --> 00:43:21 Sorry.

00:43:21 --> 00:43:22 I'm excited.

00:43:22 --> 00:43:24 I gotta let you know.

00:43:28 --> 00:43:29 Oh, man.

00:43:29 --> 00:43:31 So, yeah, I think this is a great song.

00:43:31 --> 00:43:32 I think it was the right single choice.

00:43:32 --> 00:43:38 Going back to the debate that we had, I remember back in the day on the fan forums and we didn't know what the third single was going to be.

00:43:39 --> 00:43:44 And it was a very clear, are your team Can't Speak French, team Girl of War, or team Close to Love.

00:43:44 --> 00:43:44 Yeah.

00:43:44 --> 00:43:45 That is so funny.

00:43:45 --> 00:43:47 And I was always team can't speak French.

00:43:47 --> 00:43:53 As much as I love the other two, I was like, no, this is a radio hit and it makes sense for them.

00:43:53 --> 00:43:58 It's a bit more mature, but it still has a cheekiness to it, you know?

00:43:58 --> 00:44:00 So I think it was the right decision.

00:44:02 --> 00:44:09 But yes, also shout out to the French version as well, because I remember them talking about in interviews and saying how annoying it was to get the accent right.

00:44:09 --> 00:44:13 Like they had like a coach or something with that intonation.

00:44:13 --> 00:44:15 Yeah, they were like, it was so hard.

00:44:15 --> 00:44:19 But I love the idea of them saying a song called Can't Speak French in French.

00:44:25 --> 00:44:28 Yeah, I think, listen, I love it because, like, he might be a French man.

00:44:28 --> 00:44:28 We don't know.

00:44:29 --> 00:44:31 But how do I tell this guy I'm trying to make omelette de fromage?

00:44:32 --> 00:44:43 So, listen, if you were here in America watching Dexter's Laboratory, that one episode where he was supposed to learn French, he had a little cassette tape of, like, learn French while you sleep.

00:44:44 --> 00:44:46 The thing broke and kept saying omelette de fromage.

00:44:46 --> 00:44:46 Fromage.

00:44:46 --> 00:44:49 Omelette de fromage over and over again.

00:44:51 --> 00:44:55 So then he just kept saying it at school.

00:44:55 --> 00:44:57 All the girls are getting, oh my God.

00:44:57 --> 00:44:59 I love that.

00:45:00 --> 00:45:00 Oh man.

00:45:00 --> 00:45:01 Okay.

00:45:01 --> 00:45:03 So what do you think of this very campy video?

00:45:04 --> 00:45:06 Again, this is a video that I saw and I was like, oh my God, I'm in love.

00:45:06 --> 00:45:07 So I think.

00:45:09 --> 00:45:14 Even with my little controversial question that I posed to the audience and you.

00:45:15 --> 00:45:17 I love this video.

00:45:17 --> 00:45:24 The song itself stands alone in the sense of even a K-pop girl group copied it, but no one else has done this before.

00:45:24 --> 00:45:25 Same thing with the video.

00:45:25 --> 00:45:32 There's something about seeing these women be super feminine with the corsets and the big hair and the daintiness.

00:45:33 --> 00:45:34 It's just they're selling...

00:45:35 --> 00:46:00 smexiness without being like here's sex you know so i appreciate that they look gorgeous like the guys are there in their wigs whatever but the girls are the style of the show the dancing is hilarious we both learned it and there's nothing much to it yeah but they sell it really well all those slow-mo shots and yes you go yes you could tell they literally learned like four eight times and just did it over and over again for the entire song

00:46:00 --> 00:46:27 yeah which is why the live performances are hilarious to me because like when they finally went on on what was it the um the saturday morning show or like a saturday night takeaway performance they had the guys with them and i was like oh yeah i had to learn more in those more crowds yeah they were crowded on that stage as well dancing and swinging and shaking and yeah whoever did their hair and their costuming that crap was huge big and it stayed in place

00:46:30 --> 00:46:41 Oh man, I will say with the video though, I do appreciate that it wasn't too spexy as you mentioned because those scenes with the boys and kind of towards the end are like so silly.

00:46:41 --> 00:46:44 Like it's actually kind of awkward when they're dancing with the boys.

00:46:44 --> 00:46:45 You know, it's like they don't really know.

00:46:45 --> 00:47:01 what they're doing so it's very funny i do kind of feel like it should have ended like a big food fight or something like when sarah gets on the table and stuff i was like oh it's gonna turn into like a big thing but it didn't fully get there um but yes with the live performances i've always loved cheryl doing her post chorus over the final choruses

00:47:07 --> 00:47:10 Yes, and I sing it now to this day and I hate her for it.

00:47:10 --> 00:47:11 I do too.

00:47:11 --> 00:47:18 And that should have been on the single mix, which also I want to note, there is a single mix of this song they call the radio edit on the deluxe version.

00:47:19 --> 00:47:20 It's a bit, it's even more lush.

00:47:20 --> 00:47:23 They kind of amped up the percussion and stuff for the single version.

00:47:23 --> 00:47:30 But yeah, I feel like they should have layered Cheryl's post over that because that does give it more of a climax as well.

00:47:30 --> 00:47:31 Yeah, yeah.

00:47:31 --> 00:47:32 Can I sing it now too?

00:47:32 --> 00:47:33 I'm like, I hate that you guys do that.

00:47:33 --> 00:47:34 I hate it.

00:47:34 --> 00:47:35 I know, I know.

00:47:36 --> 00:47:40 But yeah, I think they haven't changed it too much live over the years.

00:47:40 --> 00:47:43 They've always kept this kind of ballroom-esque situation.

00:47:43 --> 00:47:47 They've kept this kind of dramatic outro with the strings and everything.

00:47:48 --> 00:47:57 But of course, we did go to the Girls Loud show where that's when they brought out the fans and they had the dancers split into the femme and the masculine dancers.

00:47:58 --> 00:47:59 So yeah, that was a beautiful performance.

00:47:59 --> 00:47:59 Yeah.

00:48:00 --> 00:48:01 Yes.

00:48:01 --> 00:48:01 Oh, my God.

00:48:01 --> 00:48:02 I loved it.

00:48:02 --> 00:48:03 And shout out to Claudimar Neto.

00:48:03 --> 00:48:04 We had him on the show.

00:48:04 --> 00:48:07 The Dance Catch and Four Girls Loud during the show.

00:48:07 --> 00:48:09 He broke it all down.

00:48:09 --> 00:48:11 We can go into explicit detail.

00:48:11 --> 00:48:13 But there's more music on this album we have to talk about.

00:48:13 --> 00:48:14 So we'll move on.

00:48:14 --> 00:48:15 Well, what do you rate this one?

00:48:16 --> 00:48:16 Yeah.

00:48:16 --> 00:48:16 Okay.

00:48:16 --> 00:48:20 Now, me being like nitpicky, like, oh, it needs a middle A.

00:48:20 --> 00:48:22 It would score a little bit lower.

00:48:22 --> 00:48:22 Right.

00:48:22 --> 00:48:23 But me as a fan, I'll give it a 10.

00:48:24 --> 00:48:24 I love the song.

00:48:24 --> 00:48:25 Down.

00:48:25 --> 00:48:27 I know my question was kind of controversial.

00:48:28 --> 00:48:44 10 for me as a fan but if it was like you know songwriting purposes maybe like an eight okay okay interesting yes i have to give this a 10 i this is another one like all five of these songs so far i will never get sick of word up yeah word up

00:48:44 --> 00:48:46 I can't speak French so I'll...

00:48:46 --> 00:48:47 Okay, wait.

00:48:47 --> 00:48:47 Moving on, moving on.

00:48:48 --> 00:48:49 Up to Black Jacks.

00:48:49 --> 00:48:53 And this is done by Miranda Cooper, Brian Higgins, Tim Powell, Nick Kohler, and Lisa Cowling of Xenomania.

00:48:54 --> 00:48:57 And this was originally written during the chemistry sessions.

00:48:57 --> 00:49:03 And this song is often remembered for its performance on the Tangle Up tour with the lazy Susan rotating circular platform.

00:49:09 --> 00:49:10 This production is fun.

00:49:10 --> 00:49:13 We now are in this kind of 60s psychedelic feel.

00:49:14 --> 00:49:21 I do like how kind of pensive the song starts off with Nadine's verse and then it really explodes for that chorus.

00:49:21 --> 00:49:22 And then you get that chant as well.

00:49:23 --> 00:49:26 The chorus onwards is so fun to sing along to.

00:49:26 --> 00:49:29 And that chant, New York, nothing!

00:49:31 --> 00:49:33 It's just silly, I think.

00:49:33 --> 00:49:38 I will say with the production, I do love how prominent the electric guitar is throughout this entire album.

00:49:39 --> 00:49:47 I think that's what made the translation to the live mixes for the tour so good because that guitar can just go off in every single song.

00:49:47 --> 00:49:50 Yeah, this one's fun.

00:49:50 --> 00:49:53 I will say the verse is maybe a little too long.

00:49:53 --> 00:49:56 It feels like it's a couple eight counts too long.

00:49:56 --> 00:49:57 But...

00:49:58 --> 00:50:07 And maybe that's just because the last few songs were just so amazing that this is the first time it kind of, not lost me, but it just kind of went down a little bit.

00:50:07 --> 00:50:09 But I still like this song.

00:50:09 --> 00:50:09 What do you think?

00:50:10 --> 00:50:11 Do you know what a blackjack is?

00:50:12 --> 00:50:13 Blackjack is?

00:50:14 --> 00:50:15 Like the card?

00:50:15 --> 00:50:16 Right, it's not.

00:50:16 --> 00:50:18 So now, hear me out.

00:50:18 --> 00:50:20 When I first heard this, I'm like, why are blackjacks running on your back?

00:50:20 --> 00:50:21 What's going on?

00:50:22 --> 00:50:24 A blackjack is a weapon.

00:50:25 --> 00:50:27 Apparently it's a club or a heavy stick.

00:50:27 --> 00:50:28 The metaphor, yes.

00:50:28 --> 00:50:30 So the blackjacks run on your back.

00:50:31 --> 00:50:34 So I think it's more of a metaphor than actually her being bludgeoned to death.

00:50:34 --> 00:50:35 Hopefully.

00:50:36 --> 00:50:42 I mean, if you listen to that song, Meet Me in the Middle, baby, why don't you?

00:50:42 --> 00:50:44 That song's about an abusive relationship.

00:50:44 --> 00:50:45 I hate that, but no one knows it.

00:50:45 --> 00:50:51 But this one, I think it's just more like metaphorically speaking, like there's anxiety and dread running through her.

00:50:51 --> 00:50:54 And she's like, I say stop in the name of love, basically.

00:50:54 --> 00:50:57 I'm willing to fight hard and blue to make things work for us.

00:50:58 --> 00:50:59 So I get that.

00:50:59 --> 00:51:02 That's that kind of that I'll fight for this love.

00:51:02 --> 00:51:25 vibe no no chezza reference intended um that call the shots doesn't do i said that i was like black text a little bit more like i'll fight for the love call so i was like girl if you want to go girl go you know like girl go please um so i do appreciate the more like passionate almost kind of desperate but not pathetic

00:51:26 --> 00:51:27 approach to this song.

00:51:28 --> 00:51:31 The vocal production is so atmospheric and it is tension-filled.

00:51:32 --> 00:51:35 And I think that second verse, like, don't run and leave to New York.

00:51:35 --> 00:51:37 Like, where are you going there?

00:51:37 --> 00:51:38 Like, where are you going?

00:51:39 --> 00:51:41 But again, I respect the Let's Work It Out vibe of the song.

00:51:42 --> 00:51:43 It does not sound desperate.

00:51:43 --> 00:51:44 I really do appreciate it.

00:51:44 --> 00:51:45 And I think this one's fun.

00:51:46 --> 00:51:50 Because when I think about Girls Aloud, like when they first started, I think of like some more rock sensibility.

00:51:50 --> 00:51:56 And this kind of leans back into that vibe as opposed to like this supermodels who date the rock star vibe.

00:51:56 --> 00:51:57 So I appreciate this one.

00:51:58 --> 00:51:59 Fair, fair.

00:51:59 --> 00:52:02 I do love the tour performance of this show.

00:52:03 --> 00:52:04 Like the dance routine is so much fun.

00:52:04 --> 00:52:08 This was the first time they used that Lazy Susan in the show.

00:52:08 --> 00:52:11 So it's cool because you don't really know that it's going to rotate like that, right?

00:52:11 --> 00:52:12 Before it happens.

00:52:13 --> 00:52:16 And yeah, this kind of whole kind of double hit

00:52:16 --> 00:52:45 situation during the first verse is really cute and then they all the marching and stuff kind of this like 60s kind of mod situation yeah it's super fun and then yeah nadine and sarah i mean sarah took full advantage of her having those oh what oh yeah you know she's like she's going off on those which i love she is so funny this was one of the best performances on that tour actually

00:52:45 --> 00:52:46 You know, I agree.

00:52:46 --> 00:52:48 And also, I love the costumes.

00:52:48 --> 00:52:54 Like, this whole freaking wardrobe for this tour was giving superhero.

00:52:54 --> 00:53:00 Like, the blue and the silver and the blue, silver, black moment is giving hero, all black, villain.

00:53:00 --> 00:53:01 Villain.

00:53:01 --> 00:53:01 Ooh, yeah.

00:53:01 --> 00:53:02 Or anti-hero.

00:53:02 --> 00:53:02 Yes!

00:53:02 --> 00:53:03 Oh, yeah.

00:53:05 --> 00:53:07 Oh, we don't really talk a lot about fashion on this show.

00:53:07 --> 00:53:18 But when I tell you that matters so much, like even with Speak French, they would have done some like modern day berets and like a little red, you know, like or Bordeaux shoulders.

00:53:18 --> 00:53:19 And I'm like, OK, whatever.

00:53:19 --> 00:53:20 But they went for Marie Antoinette.

00:53:20 --> 00:53:21 So they're blackjacks.

00:53:21 --> 00:53:22 You don't get a music video.

00:53:22 --> 00:53:24 We get a powerful costume.

00:53:24 --> 00:53:25 I'm here for it.

00:53:25 --> 00:53:25 I'm here for it.

00:53:26 --> 00:53:27 Oh, love it.

00:53:27 --> 00:53:27 Yes.

00:53:28 --> 00:53:30 OK, so I rate this one an 8.5.

00:53:31 --> 00:53:32 I'll match your score.

00:53:32 --> 00:53:34 I feel like this is going to be a lot of matchy-matchy on this.

00:53:34 --> 00:53:34 Okay.

00:53:36 --> 00:53:36 Nice.

00:53:36 --> 00:53:40 So everyone, we're already halfway through this album.

00:53:40 --> 00:53:40 Ready?

00:53:41 --> 00:53:41 Yes.

00:53:41 --> 00:53:43 Of course, there are a bunch of bonus tracks.

00:53:43 --> 00:53:50 So if you want those, you're just going to have to come over to patreon.com slash CCTV Pops for that exclusive bonus episode.

00:53:51 --> 00:53:58 If you join the CCTV crew, you also get some exclusive live sessions with us too and the ability to help pick future episode topics.

00:53:58 --> 00:54:03 And if you're on any social media, we are there too at CCTV Pops.

00:54:04 --> 00:54:05 That's right.

00:54:05 --> 00:54:06 Hello.

00:54:06 --> 00:54:07 Come feed us.

00:54:07 --> 00:54:07 Come feed us.

00:54:07 --> 00:54:08 Come meet us.

00:54:08 --> 00:54:09 Come feed us.

00:54:10 --> 00:54:11 You can feed us too if you want.

00:54:11 --> 00:54:12 I love food.

00:54:12 --> 00:54:23 Okay, so let's move on to Control of the Knife done by Jodie Lay, Tim Powell, Nick Kohler, Miranda Cooper, and Brian Higgins of Zenomania and the members of Girls Aloud.

00:54:24 --> 00:54:35 And of course, the Tangled Up tour performance featured an interpolation of Trick Me by Khalees sung by Cheryl, which is believed to be her response to her then-husband's infidelity rumors.

00:54:36 --> 00:54:37 Nasty work.

00:54:37 --> 00:54:38 Nasty work.

00:54:38 --> 00:54:39 You're keeping control of...

00:54:43 --> 00:54:46 So, Girls Aloud, go ska.

00:54:46 --> 00:54:49 What do you think of Control of the Night?

00:54:50 --> 00:54:51 Another weapon mentioned.

00:54:52 --> 00:54:56 Now that I know what a blackjack is, I'm like, Chris, first got my blackjack.

00:54:56 --> 00:54:57 They were feeling violent.

00:54:57 --> 00:55:00 Yes, they were feeling violent.

00:55:00 --> 00:55:01 That's amazing.

00:55:01 --> 00:55:03 This song reminds me of Round Round.

00:55:03 --> 00:55:06 Like, not in a way where it's like, oh, it's an exact copy.

00:55:06 --> 00:55:08 But I could totally hear a DJ mix this and not.

00:55:09 --> 00:55:11 mix the two together and not be upset about it.

00:55:11 --> 00:55:11 It's like, ooh, okay.

00:55:12 --> 00:55:14 Round, round, baby, round.

00:55:14 --> 00:55:14 You know what I'm saying?

00:55:14 --> 00:55:16 Like, I could totally get with it.

00:55:16 --> 00:55:20 I think in terms of track listing, just randomly, just kind of like a thing for me.

00:55:20 --> 00:55:29 I feel like I would have appreciated this right after Can't Speak French because of like the mid-tempo dance ability of it all and then get into Black Jacks and then give us this fling.

00:55:29 --> 00:55:30 That's just me.

00:55:30 --> 00:55:30 No biggie.

00:55:30 --> 00:55:31 I'm not tripping.

00:55:31 --> 00:55:32 It does not ruin the album for me.

00:55:32 --> 00:55:34 It's just kind of like what I'm thinking about.

00:55:35 --> 00:55:37 It's ruining my dancing and...

00:55:38 --> 00:55:39 It's just throwing me off.

00:55:39 --> 00:55:39 Okay.

00:55:41 --> 00:55:46 I will say the reggae moment is a curveball in terms of what they do.

00:55:47 --> 00:55:52 It's more rhythmic than what they usually sing to.

00:55:52 --> 00:55:54 And before everyone goes, everything has rhythm.

00:55:54 --> 00:55:55 I get it.

00:55:55 --> 00:55:56 But, like, think about what I'm saying here.

00:55:56 --> 00:55:59 Like, it's giving, like, brown people.

00:55:59 --> 00:56:01 Like, they don't usually do, like, R&B.

00:56:01 --> 00:56:02 Right.

00:56:02 --> 00:56:03 Like...

00:56:04 --> 00:56:07 you know, is giving my people.

00:56:07 --> 00:56:08 So I appreciate it.

00:56:08 --> 00:56:11 It's built around the trumpets and the drum machines and the synths.

00:56:11 --> 00:56:17 And there's this uncredited male vocalist singing in a vocoder during the- I feel like that's just Sarah vocoder down, right?

00:56:18 --> 00:56:19 It may be, she may be pitched down.

00:56:19 --> 00:56:19 Yeah.

00:56:19 --> 00:56:20 I was totally joking.

00:56:20 --> 00:56:24 It was just, shout out to Haras.

00:56:24 --> 00:56:28 But yeah, I think the lyrics are interesting.

00:56:28 --> 00:56:31 And to use Trick Me by Khalees, love that as well.

00:56:31 --> 00:56:32 Oh yeah.

00:56:37 --> 00:56:40 There's toxicity in this relationship and they're over it.

00:56:40 --> 00:56:43 He caught them hook, high and cold.

00:56:44 --> 00:56:46 Like the lines of this song are so good.

00:56:46 --> 00:56:48 I'm not sure if it's just like Miranda.

00:56:48 --> 00:56:50 I know Miranda's like that's not the only writer.

00:56:50 --> 00:56:54 But just listening to some of her interviews, I feel like a lot of it is her.

00:56:55 --> 00:57:00 In terms of like the verses being kind of clever and the metaphors and like just.

00:57:00 --> 00:57:01 Totally.

00:57:01 --> 00:57:04 Just random things to say but make sense, you know.

00:57:04 --> 00:57:06 I like Miss Miss Cooper.

00:57:06 --> 00:57:07 It's beautifully written.

00:57:08 --> 00:57:09 It's so poetic and it's creative.

00:57:10 --> 00:57:10 It's unique.

00:57:10 --> 00:57:10 Yes.

00:57:11 --> 00:57:12 The way that she writes.

00:57:12 --> 00:57:12 Yeah.

00:57:12 --> 00:57:13 I do appreciate it for sure.

00:57:13 --> 00:57:14 Yeah.

00:57:14 --> 00:57:17 There is a bounciness to this song that's super fun.

00:57:17 --> 00:57:21 It does stand out in the album in a good way because it's just so unique for them.

00:57:22 --> 00:57:22 Yeah.

00:57:22 --> 00:57:24 I love Cheryl's pre-chorus.

00:57:24 --> 00:57:29 It's one of my favorite moments from her vocally because it fits her voice so perfectly with the husk.

00:57:29 --> 00:57:32 Like she sounds nonchalant, but also a little bit pissed off.

00:57:33 --> 00:57:37 And that's like, that's her perfect emotion to have.

00:57:43 --> 00:57:45 It's like perfect for her voice.

00:57:45 --> 00:57:48 Yeah, the chorus is kind of simple, but it is catchy.

00:57:48 --> 00:57:51 And I do love the, uh, uh, uh, oh yeah, in the back.

00:57:51 --> 00:57:54 Just to kind of give it some layers, you know?

00:57:54 --> 00:57:59 Because I think the chorus by itself is a little kind of, it's just kind of like, okay.

00:57:59 --> 00:58:01 But they did amp it up a little bit.

00:58:02 --> 00:58:06 The horn breakdown mixed with the vocoder situation is definitely a little weird.

00:58:06 --> 00:58:09 But that's what makes it, you know, Zeni Mania and Girls Aloud.

00:58:10 --> 00:58:13 And like Sarah's lyrics or her verse are so bizarre.

00:58:13 --> 00:58:16 Like I remember the first time I heard it, I was like, what is she saying?

00:58:16 --> 00:58:17 What is she saying?

00:58:17 --> 00:58:18 I was like, what?

00:58:18 --> 00:58:20 Like cheap babble, cheap talking free.

00:58:20 --> 00:58:21 You know, I was like, what?

00:58:21 --> 00:58:21 Yeah.

00:58:26 --> 00:58:49 but that was also perfect for her like it's like this like nonsense but she's like giving it like all this like energy yeah she spells she totally sells oh my god oh man yes it is hard not to think of the tour performance when i hear this song because oh my gosh one of the best performances on this tour i feel like i said that now for like all of these songs but

00:58:49 --> 00:58:51 Yeah, he liked the whole tour.

00:58:51 --> 00:58:52 That tour was good.

00:58:52 --> 00:58:55 You know, like, it's just so much energy.

00:58:55 --> 00:58:59 It's probably the most energetic dance routine, like this and Fling, probably.

00:58:59 --> 00:59:00 Being the two of them.

00:59:00 --> 00:59:06 And of course, Cheryl, you know, she's good at kind of jazz funk.

00:59:07 --> 00:59:32 you know so kind of this dance hall inspired kind of groovy situation like she really sat into it she knew how to sit into it and of course you get that huge dance break from her in the middle as well my favorite moment being that one turn with the three hair flips oh my god yes oh and i love that she just they just had her dance with the dancers then the rest were just

00:59:37 --> 00:59:38 So what do you rate control of the knife?

00:59:39 --> 00:59:42 Okay, this one I will give an 8.5.

00:59:43 --> 00:59:48 Okay, I will go 9 because I do enjoy it.

00:59:50 --> 00:59:52 Up next is Fling Baby, Fling Baby.

00:59:52 --> 01:00:03 This is done by Miranda Cooper, Brian Higgins, Tim Powell, Nick Kohler, Carla Marie Williams of Xenomania, and the members of Girls Aloud, and also German DJ Mugwey.

01:00:08 --> 01:00:09 How do you feel about Fling, baby?

01:00:09 --> 01:00:11 Fling, I feel like you like this one.

01:00:12 --> 01:00:13 I mean, this song is very silly.

01:00:13 --> 01:00:18 I think I say this a lot with songs that are just like all this kind of like talky rap situation.

01:00:18 --> 01:00:19 I kind of like have to be in the mood for it.

01:00:20 --> 01:00:22 Okay.

01:00:22 --> 01:00:25 Because I feel like depending on what mood you're in, it could also be kind of annoying.

01:00:25 --> 01:00:26 Yeah.

01:00:27 --> 01:00:28 But I do think it's very fun.

01:00:29 --> 01:00:31 Like the song is just so silly.

01:00:31 --> 01:00:33 The backing track is so intense.

01:00:33 --> 01:00:55 yes and it goes quite hard like i feel like maybe that's where mogwai came in because you know he was like this techno german man um so to get that influence in there is quite cool like he's a really cool get for them yeah um the chorus is very catchy you know just a fling baby fling baby and then the verses are ridiculous like and all five of them

01:00:56 --> 01:00:59 are really, really giving it their all.

01:01:00 --> 01:01:00 Yeah.

01:01:01 --> 01:01:02 That's the word for it, yeah.

01:01:02 --> 01:01:05 You know, like there's a lot of attitude.

01:01:05 --> 01:01:06 And I appreciate that.

01:01:06 --> 01:01:10 Because, you know, sometimes now with some of these songs, there's just no emotion in their delivery.

01:01:10 --> 01:01:14 So this one, they really, you know, they did what they could, for sure.

01:01:14 --> 01:01:16 Yes.

01:01:16 --> 01:01:20 I do remember there was a debate in the fan communities that the song first came out.

01:01:20 --> 01:01:24 Because no one could tell who said the line, Body like a work of odds.

01:01:28 --> 01:01:29 Which ended up being Nicola.

01:01:29 --> 01:01:34 But I think because it was so low, everyone was like, who is that?

01:01:34 --> 01:01:35 Yeah.

01:01:35 --> 01:01:37 We had to wait until the tour to get it confirmed.

01:01:37 --> 01:01:38 That's so funny.

01:01:38 --> 01:01:41 You know, I do appreciate, at least there are some sung moments.

01:01:41 --> 01:01:44 Like we get that pre-chorus from Sarah, Nicola, and Dean.

01:01:44 --> 01:01:46 They sound great with that.

01:01:46 --> 01:01:50 We love the husk and the voice cracking, you know, from Nadine.

01:01:50 --> 01:01:51 I thought that was fun.

01:01:51 --> 01:01:54 So yeah, I think this is one where

01:01:55 --> 01:01:57 I love the live performance.

01:01:57 --> 01:02:00 And that's, again, what really sold the song for me.

01:02:00 --> 01:02:04 I think by itself, it's one of those where sometimes I'm in the mood and sometimes I'm not.

01:02:04 --> 01:02:05 Okay, that's valid.

01:02:06 --> 01:02:10 I mean, listen, they're talking crap, like, a lot on this track.

01:02:10 --> 01:02:12 Like, they're talking so much crap on this track.

01:02:13 --> 01:02:35 like just chilling either by the bathroom or like at a party you're just like oh okay that one's hot you know like you've you've moved past the chemical stair boys you know and the terrible hair ones you know now it's like okay hang on that one that one's nice looking um but yeah i think it's fun it's a good time uh especially on this album that has more serious or mature

01:02:36 --> 01:03:04 tones you know so it's like it's nice to have this one song uh watch me go is watching her baby sister proudly with this one for sure i mean yes this is a manic shout along song um is cheeky and unsubtle about what a fling actually is and you can it's so it's so entertaining like you can kind of get away with the whole ding-a-ling thing um chuck berry would totally appreciate this like chuck berry probably like wow

01:03:05 --> 01:03:08 You know, you know, my ding-a-ling.

01:03:08 --> 01:03:09 Wow, okay.

01:03:12 --> 01:03:12 Oh, okay.

01:03:12 --> 01:03:14 So what did you think of the tour performance?

01:03:14 --> 01:03:17 Because the girls often said this was their favorite moment.

01:03:17 --> 01:03:20 Like them all stomping out in those gold dresses.

01:03:20 --> 01:03:21 Well, it's fun.

01:03:22 --> 01:03:23 It's silly.

01:03:23 --> 01:03:29 Like the song is like, you don't really need discretion and choreography when you're talking about superficial things.

01:03:29 --> 01:03:31 There's actually quite a lot of choreography here, though.

01:03:32 --> 01:03:36 I know, but I'm just saying, I just, I feel like you don't need all of it.

01:03:38 --> 01:03:43 But I think the way they did it was, it was a lot.

01:03:44 --> 01:03:48 I personally, for me, I would have just been like, you know, you know, we're just swinging, having a good time.

01:03:48 --> 01:03:49 But it's actually very involved.

01:03:50 --> 01:03:51 So, yeah, I mean.

01:03:53 --> 01:03:57 Yeah, I mean, I think that intro actually is almost as good as the performance itself.

01:03:57 --> 01:04:02 Like that little situation with the girls in the bathroom, encouraging Nadine to go flirt with that man.

01:04:03 --> 01:04:04 And she's like, oh.

01:04:05 --> 01:04:06 And they're, you know, it's very, very cute.

01:04:06 --> 01:04:08 And then shouting at Kimberly for being nasty.

01:04:08 --> 01:04:12 Like, Kimberly, like she said the most outrageous thing ever.

01:04:12 --> 01:04:14 Like, girl, let her rock.

01:04:19 --> 01:04:23 I mean, that's maybe the most iconic part of that whole performance, Nadine saying that.

01:04:24 --> 01:04:28 The other part that I love is the very end with the wind machines and they're all just like,

01:04:29 --> 01:04:30 Oh my God.

01:04:30 --> 01:04:31 It hits Sarah first.

01:04:31 --> 01:04:34 And then you look at the recording, Sarah's hair goes.

01:04:35 --> 01:04:36 That's what I noticed first.

01:04:36 --> 01:04:37 I was like, damn, they got you, girl.

01:04:38 --> 01:04:39 Cause she's hitting her notes.

01:04:39 --> 01:04:40 And then her mouth is wide open.

01:04:40 --> 01:04:42 The fan is like pulling on her.

01:04:42 --> 01:04:44 So yeah, moments like that.

01:04:44 --> 01:04:47 I'm like, this was very involved for a song about just, they're walking this way.

01:04:47 --> 01:04:48 They're walking that way.

01:04:48 --> 01:04:49 They're walking this way.

01:04:49 --> 01:04:52 I will say the outfits just did not match the performance, but it was whatever at this point.

01:04:53 --> 01:04:56 They said they wanted to go for like Beyonce powerful.

01:04:56 --> 01:04:57 I was getting that.

01:04:58 --> 01:05:00 Yeah, that color and that silhouette of the outfit.

01:05:00 --> 01:05:01 Yeah, no, I get it.

01:05:01 --> 01:05:01 I get it.

01:05:01 --> 01:05:04 But yes, like I said, didn't need all of it.

01:05:04 --> 01:05:07 I feel like it doesn't need to choreograph, but they choreographed the F out of it.

01:05:07 --> 01:05:08 So congratulations.

01:05:09 --> 01:05:11 Yes, so I'll give this one a nine.

01:05:11 --> 01:05:13 I think for what it is, it's very good.

01:05:14 --> 01:05:16 I give this one an 8.5.

01:05:16 --> 01:05:19 Okay, next up is What You Crying For?

01:05:20 --> 01:05:26 Done by Myra Boyle, Tim Rolfe, Larcombe, Lisa Cowling, Miranda Cooper, and Brian Higgins of Zenomania.

01:05:27 --> 01:05:34 And on an earlier sampler version of the album that was given out for promo, this was actually going to be the first track on the album for a minute.

01:05:40 --> 01:05:42 I like the drum and bass vibe of it all.

01:05:42 --> 01:05:47 It reminds you of the PlayStation Dreamcast playlist I listen to on YouTube.

01:05:47 --> 01:05:54 It is random in terms of the album soundscape, but it does, like, tick off genre bouncing things.

01:05:55 --> 01:05:57 You know, that whole box of it.

01:05:57 --> 01:05:58 Oh, did we get Scott?

01:05:58 --> 01:05:58 We did.

01:05:58 --> 01:06:00 Did we get this random rock?

01:06:00 --> 01:06:00 Yes.

01:06:01 --> 01:06:02 Did we put our supermodel track on it?

01:06:02 --> 01:06:02 Yes.

01:06:02 --> 01:06:04 Did we put a track about someone's ding-a-ling?

01:06:04 --> 01:06:04 Yes.

01:06:04 --> 01:06:07 So this one is more like, is this weird and wonky?

01:06:08 --> 01:06:09 You know, like swinging London Town.

01:06:09 --> 01:06:12 What biz does that have on anybody's album?

01:06:12 --> 01:06:13 But it's a fun track.

01:06:13 --> 01:06:14 If you like it, you like it.

01:06:14 --> 01:06:15 If you don't, I understand.

01:06:16 --> 01:06:17 Same thing with this one.

01:06:17 --> 01:06:18 If you like it, you get it.

01:06:18 --> 01:06:19 If you don't like it, whatever.

01:06:19 --> 01:06:20 It's fine for you.

01:06:20 --> 01:06:25 But yes, this song is very unsympathetic toward the excuses that this man offers.

01:06:25 --> 01:06:28 I mean, it could be about anyone, but they do say like, what is it?

01:06:28 --> 01:06:30 When you gonna put your devils to bed, boy.

01:06:30 --> 01:06:31 But yeah, it's for anyone.

01:06:31 --> 01:06:55 anyone who plays victim sure but yeah i knew a guy like that but he complained about like not having so much money but like i'm like why not because he gambled i'm like to stop gambling like what the hell um and then he wanted to be healthy but he never like actually took care of himself i'm like what is wrong with you what is why you think the world's against you and people who think the world's against them build i don't know man it's rough you know you don't have a good day once

01:06:56 --> 01:06:59 Yeah, I know lots of people like this, unfortunately.

01:06:59 --> 01:07:02 I know a lot of people that just play victim all the time.

01:07:02 --> 01:07:02 Yes.

01:07:03 --> 01:07:05 And that is my least favorite type of person.

01:07:05 --> 01:07:07 So I relate heavily to these lyrics.

01:07:07 --> 01:07:08 I'm with the girls.

01:07:08 --> 01:07:09 I'm crying.

01:07:09 --> 01:07:09 We got this whole tactic.

01:07:09 --> 01:07:10 Yelling at these people.

01:07:10 --> 01:07:12 Yeah, they're ungrateful after a while.

01:07:12 --> 01:07:13 It's like, you have no shame.

01:07:13 --> 01:07:14 Sin vergüenza.

01:07:14 --> 01:07:15 Like, sin vergüenza, for real.

01:07:15 --> 01:07:16 Like, ugh.

01:07:16 --> 01:07:16 Yeah.

01:07:16 --> 01:07:17 But.

01:07:17 --> 01:07:17 It's interesting.

01:07:17 --> 01:07:21 The second verse is more like my goodwill toward you is being met with ungratefulness.

01:07:22 --> 01:07:22 And it's true.

01:07:23 --> 01:07:24 Like it happens.

01:07:24 --> 01:07:29 And I think the girls do a good job of not sounding super condescending, but just like not letting the person get away with it.

01:07:29 --> 01:07:32 And I think that's really important because you'll have a song like.

01:07:33 --> 01:07:35 was it God bless the mean girls like the cats are?

01:07:36 --> 01:07:43 And it sounds like you don't care for the tone of that because it does sound a little like bright and flat at the same time where this is a little bit lower and more serious.

01:07:43 --> 01:07:49 So I think in terms of vocal delivery, they got their point across without sounding super preachy and more just like I'm sick of your ish.

01:07:50 --> 01:07:50 So that's good.

01:07:50 --> 01:07:51 That's very good.

01:07:51 --> 01:07:51 Yeah.

01:07:51 --> 01:07:51 Yeah.

01:07:52 --> 01:07:54 This song, I think, is underrated, actually.

01:07:54 --> 01:07:57 Every time it comes out, I'm like, oh, this is a really good song.

01:07:57 --> 01:08:03 And I love Love Hate as well from the first album, which also is kind of this drum and bass situation.

01:08:03 --> 01:08:05 So, yeah, this is kind of like the little follow-up to that.

01:08:06 --> 01:08:08 But, yeah, I really like the lyrics.

01:08:08 --> 01:08:11 My favorite delivery is Nadine in the second verse with...

01:08:11 --> 01:08:13 The umbrella?

01:08:13 --> 01:08:15 You take my umbrella while I stand in the rain.

01:08:15 --> 01:08:16 Yeah, the umbrella.

01:08:16 --> 01:08:19 You take my umbrella while I stand in the rain.

01:08:20 --> 01:08:21 And then Nikola's bridge is cool too.

01:08:21 --> 01:08:33 You get this big, whomping bass, but then Nikola's doing this like high, kind of almost creepy, you know, like delivery of this, you don't care, it's cold out there.

01:08:33 --> 01:08:35 You don't care, it's cold out there.

01:08:39 --> 01:09:04 you know oh my god um so yeah i really like this one i think maybe because it didn't get a tour performance that you know it's not mentioned as much sometimes but i think on the album it's actually up there yeah one of the more solid tracks that kind of just like fall by the wayside so for me this one's annoying i also have it as a nine up next is i'm falling that's done by brian higgins tim powell veranda cooper and nick color of xenomania

01:09:09 --> 01:09:10 Okay.

01:09:10 --> 01:09:12 This is an electropunk?

01:09:12 --> 01:09:12 Yeah.

01:09:12 --> 01:09:13 Kind of?

01:09:13 --> 01:09:13 Yeah.

01:09:13 --> 01:09:13 Okay.

01:09:14 --> 01:09:14 All right.

01:09:14 --> 01:09:15 Yeah, yeah, we'll say that.

01:09:15 --> 01:09:15 We'll say that.

01:09:16 --> 01:09:22 Okay, now you are a fan, so I'm very curious to hear what you have to say, because I'm like, is his bias gonna shine through on this?

01:09:22 --> 01:09:23 Is he gonna be...

01:09:23 --> 01:09:24 I'm joking, I'm joking.

01:09:24 --> 01:09:27 Well, I think this one is a divisive one for sure.

01:09:27 --> 01:09:28 Oh, okay.

01:09:28 --> 01:09:30 I do think the track itself is cool.

01:09:30 --> 01:09:35 Like this distorted situation, there are these squelchy sounds and bubble sounds.

01:09:35 --> 01:09:38 Like the whole production is very interesting, right?

01:09:39 --> 01:09:42 And then the vocal, you get this really affected vocal as well.

01:09:43 --> 01:09:46 I do think there's something that feels a bit incomplete about it.

01:09:46 --> 01:09:49 And I think that's because the verses are identical lyrically.

01:09:49 --> 01:09:50 Yes.

01:09:50 --> 01:09:50 And there's no bridge.

01:09:51 --> 01:10:17 yes so it just feels a little i don't know yeah it feels like it should have just maybe been like a one minute interlude or something um but the elements that are here i do enjoy it like i think i think the vocal execution is okay like i think nadine and kimberly do a really good job i think some of the others sound a bit more bored than they they should to match this like i think cheryl sounds a little bored on this one and i'm like oh i think you need to like

01:10:18 --> 01:10:39 rock it up a little bit this time um but i think there's some good lyrics too like i need some va va voom to get me out of this room it's gotten small for me like that's fun you know so there are still some fun lyrics here but yeah i feel like the song feels more like xenomania featuring girls allowed because the production is so cool and that's what i pay more attention to than the vocal

01:10:40 --> 01:10:56 yeah that's valid i mean i from yeah i feel like if it it wants to be a callback to the sound of the underground like the project itself in terms of vibes yeah you know the energy is lackluster in the chorus and i think that's what really because let's be real here

01:10:56 --> 01:10:58 This is kind of what Can't Speak French did.

01:10:58 --> 01:11:05 Like, you know, it's just, here's a very simple verse, and here's this, that, and the third, but it has a way better top line.

01:11:05 --> 01:11:08 It has better hook moments there.

01:11:08 --> 01:11:14 Because both songs are not super complicated, but this one is just not it.

01:11:14 --> 01:11:15 We've heard songs.

01:11:15 --> 01:11:19 We've heard songs that have repeated verses, like Hush by Miss A.

01:11:19 --> 01:11:21 They say the same thing twice, but the production changes.

01:11:22 --> 01:11:23 This is just sort of...

01:11:24 --> 01:11:50 you know what i don't blame them they say come touch me yeah come do this yeah second verse come touch me yeah like but the production changed yeah but the production changed so i think the long instrumental break after a chorus just to come back to the same lyrics in the verse without any kind of production or vocal yeah meh lost me so i totally get what you're saying um and the production like you said is fun and like this sound this this is yeah

01:11:51 --> 01:12:12 sound in the back that sounds like animals purring after the chorus it cracks me up that's what i look forward to the the lion king the circle of life happening in this damn production so a great part honestly yeah what do you rate this one 7.5 i'm so sorry i agree with you 7.5 is good for this one

01:12:15 --> 01:12:16 Oh, okay, good.

01:12:16 --> 01:12:17 Because I felt bad.

01:12:17 --> 01:12:17 I felt guilty.

01:12:18 --> 01:12:18 Nah.

01:12:19 --> 01:12:20 Next is Damn.

01:12:21 --> 01:12:27 Done by Tim Powell, Miranda Cooper, Brian Higgins, Nick Kohler, and Lisa Cowling of Zenimania.

01:12:33 --> 01:12:33 Yes.

01:12:34 --> 01:12:36 Here we are with some 80s pop rock.

01:12:36 --> 01:12:37 It's real groovy.

01:12:37 --> 01:12:41 And you get some drama presented by synths deep in the mix.

01:12:41 --> 01:12:42 Okay, here's my thing, right?

01:12:42 --> 01:12:46 This sounds like something from a Scooby-Doo chase sequence.

01:12:47 --> 01:12:47 Oh.

01:12:47 --> 01:12:50 Like, think about how they would have certain songs.

01:12:50 --> 01:12:51 It wouldn't be like this creepy music.

01:12:52 --> 01:12:54 It'd be really groovy kind of tracks.

01:12:54 --> 01:12:55 Sure.

01:12:55 --> 01:12:56 The OG...

01:12:58 --> 01:13:00 Scooby-Doo, not the What's New version.

01:13:00 --> 01:13:02 What's New was more punk rock.

01:13:03 --> 01:13:04 The OG one?

01:13:05 --> 01:13:06 Yeah, okay.

01:13:06 --> 01:13:06 The music was good.

01:13:07 --> 01:13:07 But here's the thing, right?

01:13:08 --> 01:13:10 Maybe Josie and the Pussycat Dolls were in that specific episode at one point.

01:13:10 --> 01:13:14 Because sometimes they would have the Josie Pussycat Dolls singers.

01:13:14 --> 01:13:15 That's true.

01:13:15 --> 01:13:15 Y'all...

01:13:16 --> 01:13:20 Listen, you can tell what I was doing in my early childhood watching Boomerang.

01:13:20 --> 01:13:22 If you're from America, cool.

01:13:22 --> 01:13:25 If you're not from America, it's a cartoon block with vintage cartoons.

01:13:25 --> 01:13:27 I was watching that on Saturdays before a dance class.

01:13:27 --> 01:13:35 But yes, so I feel like the lyrics are interesting because you have like, the chill starts here and then stops there to tell the times.

01:13:35 --> 01:13:37 Like the lyrics are a little creepy kooky.

01:13:37 --> 01:13:39 I do appreciate it.

01:13:39 --> 01:13:41 It's about, you know, catchy feelings, whatever.

01:13:41 --> 01:13:45 The chorus, however, is not super distinctive, but it is effective.

01:13:45 --> 01:13:53 And this, I say, is a little bit more safer than the other tracks on the album, which makes it feel lackluster in comparison, which is not fair.

01:13:53 --> 01:13:54 Not fair at all.

01:13:54 --> 01:13:58 Because the other songs are so just like, here's our best stuff in one song.

01:13:58 --> 01:13:59 Here's another song with our best stuff.

01:13:59 --> 01:14:02 Here's another song with the best stuff.

01:14:02 --> 01:14:03 And then here's Damn.

01:14:03 --> 01:14:04 Hi!

01:14:04 --> 01:14:05 Like, it's just like...

01:14:07 --> 01:14:10 And it's not bad.

01:14:10 --> 01:14:11 It's just not as good.

01:14:11 --> 01:14:12 That's a good point.

01:14:12 --> 01:14:14 That's a good point.

01:14:14 --> 01:14:15 You're right.

01:14:15 --> 01:14:16 You're right.

01:14:16 --> 01:14:22 I will say, I think that initial chorus, that first thing that we hear, and if you tell me what the hell I should read, like, I actually like that.

01:14:22 --> 01:14:23 I think that's great.

01:14:23 --> 01:14:25 I think that's a great melody.

01:14:25 --> 01:14:28 Unfortunately, I think that's the best part of the song.

01:14:28 --> 01:14:31 And I think you're right in that there's nothing...

01:14:32 --> 01:15:00 new about this feel wise or production wise like it's you're still kind of in this kind of 80s pop rock situation guitar heavy yeah so it doesn't bring anything new like some of the songs before it did like at least i'm falling was like an interesting sonic you know yeah this one does feel very fillery in comparison it's just not very impactful like i don't love that kind of chanty first verse because again cheryl and kimberly again sound kind of bored i don't

01:15:00 --> 01:15:03 About girls who take good care.

01:15:03 --> 01:15:04 About boys who take good care.

01:15:04 --> 01:15:05 I've done that.

01:15:05 --> 01:15:08 I don't know.

01:15:08 --> 01:15:11 You know, like, it's just, it feels like it needed some oomph to it.

01:15:11 --> 01:15:13 And maybe that would have helped.

01:15:13 --> 01:15:13 Yeah.

01:15:14 --> 01:15:17 Yeah, the whole thing just felt like it didn't have as much energy.

01:15:18 --> 01:15:26 So I think you're right in that it's just not as impactful because this first part of this album is just so powerful.

01:15:26 --> 01:15:29 That's the hard part about having such good songs.

01:15:29 --> 01:15:36 And I would argue potentially some of the B-sides on this album or from this era could replace this.

01:15:37 --> 01:15:38 Ooh, which one?

01:15:38 --> 01:15:38 Yeah.

01:15:38 --> 01:15:41 Well, you'll have to watch the bonus episode to find out.

01:15:41 --> 01:15:42 Oh, dang it.

01:15:42 --> 01:15:42 Oh, wait.

01:15:42 --> 01:15:43 I'm going to be there.

01:15:43 --> 01:15:44 Will you?

01:15:44 --> 01:15:46 On to the next track after our ratings.

01:15:46 --> 01:15:50 Okay, I'll give this one a seven.

01:15:51 --> 01:15:52 It's not fair for her.

01:15:53 --> 01:15:55 Oh, fine.

01:15:55 --> 01:15:56 You know what?

01:15:56 --> 01:15:57 I'll give it.

01:15:58 --> 01:16:00 A seven as well, unfortunately.

01:16:00 --> 01:16:01 Dang it.

01:16:02 --> 01:16:02 I feel so bad.

01:16:03 --> 01:16:05 With that being said, let's move on to the last track.

01:16:05 --> 01:16:06 Crocodile Tears.

01:16:07 --> 01:16:16 Done by Tim Powell, Brian Higgins, Tim LaCombe, Miranda Cooper, Nick Kohler, Giselle Somerville of Zenomania, and all five members of Girls Aloud.

01:16:16 --> 01:16:17 Who is this Giselle?

01:16:18 --> 01:16:20 Before it was Miss Lay, now we have Miss Somerville.

01:16:20 --> 01:16:21 No, Giselle was there.

01:16:21 --> 01:16:22 She did call the chats.

01:16:22 --> 01:16:23 Oh, this is true.

01:16:23 --> 01:16:24 But welcome back.

01:16:24 --> 01:16:25 We haven't heard your name.

01:16:25 --> 01:16:26 Zenomania team's bitch.

01:16:32 --> 01:16:56 okay so crocodile tears is a very interesting title right because it's like where you're gonna go with that because we all know that they're not real tears so are they punishing someone are they not what is it because this whole energy of this album was so explosive but then you have call the shots that starts it off kind of chill and then this one here is an emotional payoff like how do you feel about all of it now that we're at the end

01:16:56 --> 01:16:59 I really enjoy Crocodile Tears.

01:16:59 --> 01:17:06 Like, I just think the melodies are really, really strong, and they highlight each girl really well, and their vocal tone.

01:17:07 --> 01:17:13 I like that there are no ballads on this album, because it really is just, like, constant energy.

01:17:13 --> 01:17:15 So, obviously, this one is a bit...

01:17:15 --> 01:17:36 more like down in terms of energy but in terms of like bpm and stuff it's still kind of there you know um so i appreciate that it's just a different feel again from from the rest of the songs cheryl is perfect on that first first you know i think i mentioned when she um can stay kind of nonchalant but also sound kind of pissed off

01:17:36 --> 01:18:04 this is another great example of that and that kind of husk that she has that kind of delicateness is perfect and we get Kimberly doing her head voice which is really beautiful Nicola also sounds annoyed here and I love it Sarah, they clearly wrote that for her like they gave her this little rocky little moment and then Nadine gets to lead the chorus which is where she lives and breathes so yeah I kind of love the vocal arrangement of it I love that each girl gets her own little moment

01:18:05 --> 01:18:06 Yeah.

01:18:06 --> 01:18:08 So, yeah, I think it's a nice way to end the album.

01:18:08 --> 01:18:15 I do think it's memorable on the album because it is a catchy chorus, but it is also very different from everything else.

01:18:15 --> 01:18:16 Yeah.

01:18:16 --> 01:18:18 So, yeah, I love it, actually.

01:18:19 --> 01:18:22 You know, I was not expecting this on this album.

01:18:23 --> 01:18:29 Because, you know, when we talk about Girls Aloud, even in our comments, a lot of people don't reference this song.

01:18:30 --> 01:18:31 They don't go, oh my God, Crocodile Tears.

01:18:31 --> 01:18:32 You guys have to listen to that.

01:18:32 --> 01:18:34 Even you weren't like, we have to listen to Crocodile Tears.

01:18:34 --> 01:18:36 It doesn't mean you guys don't like the song.

01:18:36 --> 01:18:37 It doesn't mean fans don't like it.

01:18:38 --> 01:18:42 But it was one of those songs where I think it is understated on such a powerful album.

01:18:43 --> 01:18:47 And I think in terms of its delivery is the most...

01:18:48 --> 01:18:55 quiet for lack of a better word because you can actually hear textures here, interesting deliveries.

01:18:55 --> 01:18:57 Like they're not singing at the top of their lungs.

01:18:57 --> 01:18:58 They're not rapping.

01:18:58 --> 01:18:59 They're not shouting.

01:18:59 --> 01:19:06 They're just standard, like, you know, by the number of singing that isn't boring.

01:19:07 --> 01:19:12 And the story isn't all over the place in terms of like where the top line is going because we're trying to impress you with like a hook.

01:19:12 --> 01:19:17 So I think it provides, like I said, the emotional payoff after all the pop perfection.

01:19:19 --> 01:19:20 It's an emotional high point.

01:19:21 --> 01:19:22 The party is over.

01:19:22 --> 01:19:27 We can unravel our tangled up hearts because this person is a piece of crap, apparently.

01:19:29 --> 01:19:34 But yeah, this one, this one is a lot more accusatory and guarded than more than, more than just a weary one.

01:19:35 --> 01:19:36 So I appreciate that.

01:19:36 --> 01:19:36 It's,

01:19:37 --> 01:19:37 It's really nice.

01:19:38 --> 01:19:43 I think I appreciate them not being so like, what was me at the end of an album?

01:19:43 --> 01:19:51 Because I think my biggest complaint almost every album review is that everyone kind of does this whole like, we need to, we're stronger than the rain.

01:19:51 --> 01:19:52 We will fly away.

01:19:53 --> 01:19:54 We need to, I'll love you again.

01:19:54 --> 01:19:57 Like we don't, you don't, you don't, you don't.

01:19:58 --> 01:20:01 You do if it's actually a really good song, but you don't need to force it on there.

01:20:01 --> 01:20:02 You mean, right.

01:20:02 --> 01:20:28 yes yeah yeah chris is my chris is my um my uh politically correct translator on our show because i'd be safe stuff i'm sorry guys but the point is unless it's good don't do it please don't um because then it's gonna get a bad score but this one's nice i will say the chorus is simple it is a little weak because it's just repetitive but it's not that it's just okay verses are stronger everything else is a little bit stronger middle eight is there for me but just the chorus is like crocodile tears crocodile you know i'm

01:20:28 --> 01:20:29 It just wasn't giving.

01:20:30 --> 01:20:31 Not terrible, though.

01:20:31 --> 01:20:33 Like the song, it is an 8.

01:20:34 --> 01:20:35 Yes, I also have it as an 8.

01:20:36 --> 01:20:41 Okay, so that's the end of the standard version of the Tangled Up album.

01:20:41 --> 01:20:44 So we're now at our cut or keep section.

01:20:44 --> 01:20:47 So we've got to cut a song off this album.

01:20:47 --> 01:20:48 What would it be and why?

01:20:49 --> 01:20:52 We had some of our Patreon members contribute their choices.

01:20:52 --> 01:20:52 Yeah.

01:20:52 --> 01:20:53 So...

01:20:53 --> 01:20:56 Jonathan said he would cut I'm falling.

01:20:56 --> 01:20:57 He says, I don't hate it.

01:20:57 --> 01:21:00 It's just fine compared to all the other stronger songs.

01:21:00 --> 01:21:02 Diego said crocodile tears.

01:21:03 --> 01:21:05 Ren also said I'm falling.

01:21:05 --> 01:21:07 Also said it's just okay.

01:21:07 --> 01:21:09 And Ryan agreed with I'm falling as well.

01:21:10 --> 01:21:12 So do you agree?

01:21:13 --> 01:21:14 Okay, I'm falling.

01:21:14 --> 01:21:16 Oh, a poor thing.

01:21:18 --> 01:21:19 I would actually cut damn.

01:21:21 --> 01:21:23 I wish I was your lover.

01:21:23 --> 01:21:24 Sorry, I had to think of that.

01:21:24 --> 01:21:25 Damn.

01:21:26 --> 01:21:27 Oh, ooh, ooh.

01:21:27 --> 01:21:30 Yeah, because I think it's the most redundant.

01:21:30 --> 01:21:34 Because I think at least with I'm Falling, at least it's interesting.

01:21:36 --> 01:21:36 You know?

01:21:36 --> 01:21:37 Sonically.

01:21:37 --> 01:21:37 Yeah.

01:21:38 --> 01:21:44 Sonically, like, production-wise, yeah, but verse-wise, that Baba Boo ain't enough to save it.

01:21:44 --> 01:21:46 So I might have to agree with everyone and say, get rid of I'm Falling.

01:21:46 --> 01:21:47 Yeah.

01:21:48 --> 01:21:54 Okay, and then for a keep, so we try not to choose a single, but some of our listeners did choose singles.

01:21:54 --> 01:21:56 So Diego chose sexy no, no, no.

01:21:56 --> 01:21:58 Ryan chose call the shots.

01:21:59 --> 01:22:04 And then Ren said, outside of the three singles, he would choose girl overboard as the absolute keep.

01:22:05 --> 01:22:06 How was this not a single?

01:22:06 --> 01:22:10 He says, it's second for me on their missed opportunity singles behind on the Metro.

01:22:11 --> 01:22:11 Yeah.

01:22:11 --> 01:22:12 Hello.

01:22:12 --> 01:22:13 And then John-

01:22:15 --> 01:22:17 And then Jonathan said, fling.

01:22:17 --> 01:22:20 He said it goes so hard while still being dancey and sexy.

01:22:20 --> 01:22:23 It's just a fling, baby, fling, baby.

01:22:24 --> 01:22:24 Oh, man.

01:22:24 --> 01:22:26 So I think my choice is quite obvious.

01:22:26 --> 01:22:28 It has to be a girl overboard.

01:22:28 --> 01:22:28 Yeah.

01:22:29 --> 01:22:30 Oh, yes.

01:22:30 --> 01:22:33 Mine would be Close to Love.

01:22:33 --> 01:22:34 I love that one.

01:22:34 --> 01:22:35 It just makes me think of what I call them.

01:22:35 --> 01:22:37 They're like Victoria's Secret Models that sing.

01:22:38 --> 01:22:38 So I like that one.

01:22:39 --> 01:22:39 Nice.

01:22:40 --> 01:22:43 Okay, so overall thoughts on Tangled Up.

01:22:43 --> 01:22:45 Is it Girls Aloud's best album?

01:22:46 --> 01:22:51 I mean, so far, I feel like this has been the highest scores I've had for their stuff.

01:22:51 --> 01:22:53 I don't like their other stuff, but I feel like this is pretty solid.

01:22:54 --> 01:22:59 It reminded me of how I felt when I heard Jade's debut, where I'm like, oh, this is good.

01:22:59 --> 01:23:00 Oh, this is good.

01:23:00 --> 01:23:00 Oh, this is good.

01:23:01 --> 01:23:02 Okay, that's all right, but I still like it.

01:23:03 --> 01:23:03 Oh, this is good.

01:23:03 --> 01:23:05 You know, so it's like that.

01:23:05 --> 01:23:10 So I felt the same way about Jade, where it's like he has such good pop songs that when you had the songs that were kind of meh,

01:23:11 --> 01:23:12 It was not even that meh.

01:23:12 --> 01:23:14 It was just the other ones were just so damn good.

01:23:14 --> 01:23:15 It's hard.

01:23:15 --> 01:23:19 It was the SNL skit with the singing sisters.

01:23:21 --> 01:23:23 I wouldn't say it's that bad.

01:23:24 --> 01:23:25 I'm joking.

01:23:25 --> 01:23:25 I'm joking.

01:23:25 --> 01:23:26 The difference is not that bad.

01:23:27 --> 01:23:30 But yeah, even the B sides are really fun, except maybe one.

01:23:30 --> 01:23:31 Yeah.

01:23:31 --> 01:23:34 But I think this album is good.

01:23:35 --> 01:23:35 It's solid.

01:23:36 --> 01:23:42 And I think for this to be like one of the peak before the valley, not bad.

01:23:42 --> 01:23:43 Yeah.

01:23:43 --> 01:23:44 Yeah.

01:23:44 --> 01:23:45 I'm excited to talk about Out of Control.

01:23:45 --> 01:23:47 I think that'll be an interesting one to talk about for sure.

01:23:48 --> 01:23:50 But yeah, you know, I love this album.

01:23:50 --> 01:23:51 I agree.

01:23:51 --> 01:23:56 I think as a fan, and this is what Ren said as well, he said this was such a great era to be a fan.

01:23:57 --> 01:23:58 And I completely agree.

01:23:58 --> 01:23:58 Like, it was...

01:23:59 --> 01:24:22 so great to come out of the greatest hits album where we thought they were going to break up yeah right but then they stayed together they finally got critical acclaim they got some respect both from the general public and the critics they were finally getting radio play like it was so satisfying as fans to see them finally get all this recognition for such great music right and

01:24:23 --> 01:24:25 And yeah, the music really is amazing.

01:24:25 --> 01:24:29 Like that first half of that album is so solid.

01:24:29 --> 01:24:34 Like this is for sure among, I think, the best girl group albums of all time.

01:24:34 --> 01:24:34 Yeah.

01:24:35 --> 01:24:37 So I'm definitely there.

01:24:37 --> 01:24:38 I agree.

01:24:38 --> 01:24:40 And yeah, some of our listeners agree.

01:24:40 --> 01:24:43 Jonathan said it's a banger of an album.

01:24:43 --> 01:24:47 He said Close to Love, Girl Overboard could have easily been successful singles as well.

01:24:48 --> 01:24:52 Diego mentioned that new song that we got, What's a Girl to Do.

01:24:52 --> 01:24:52 He said he's.

01:24:53 --> 01:25:08 playing it all morning and that this is their his favorite album of theirs and that it's their best he said not only was the music good but all the aspects of the era as well so yeah this this was a really amazing time for them as a group

01:25:09 --> 01:25:22 super solid album and my overall score will be a nine for the even if i have lower scores body of work speaking of the body of work it is just mildly uncalkable mildly uncalkable so yeah i will also give it a nine

01:25:23 --> 01:25:23 All right.

01:25:23 --> 01:25:24 Oh my goodness.

01:25:24 --> 01:25:29 We do have some of the B-sides to do reviews, but again, like Chris said, you got to be there.

01:25:29 --> 01:25:31 You got to be in the Patreon if they see it.
