00:00:00 --> 00:00:07 If Beyonce is Clark Kent, then Sasha Fierce is her bedazzled Superman. Introducing part two of I am Sasha Fierce. Fierce, Fierce, Fierce.

00:00:10 --> 00:00:32 Thank you all so much for joining us. This is part two of our I Am Sasha Fierce track by track honest review. Yeah. And if you haven't already, go check out part one where we discuss I am. We're much more excited to talk about Sasha Fierce, which, as we noted, reflects Beyonce's powerful stage persona.

00:00:32 --> 00:00:55 Right. And before you get offended, please note that Beyonce herself seems to cite a lot more songs from this side of the album than she does the other. So say what you want. We were still going to go track by track to discuss the production, vocals, lyrics and give our ratings for each song. Let's get it. Viewer discretion is advised. Your fave will be criticized.

00:00:55 --> 00:01:05 Starting off with Single Ladies. Put a ring on it. This was done by Beyonce, the dream, Christopher Tricky Stewart, and Thaddis Cook-Harrell.

00:01:08 --> 00:01:36 And this was released as a single in October 2008, along with If I Were a Boy to show the duality of the album. And the song hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and stayed there for four weeks. And the song won Grammy Awards in 2010 for Song of the Year, Best Female R&B Vocal Performance, and Best R&B Song. And the legendary music video was directed by Jake Neva and choreographed by Jackel Knight and Frank Gatson Jr.,

00:01:36 --> 00:02:01 And that iconic music video won Video of the Year and Best Choreography at the MTV VMAs in 2009. And this was the infamous night when Kanye interrupted Taylor's win for Best Female Video. Oh, yeah, that's right. That's insane. Oh, my goodness. Anyway, you know, what a cultural reset, you know, the leotard, the hand flick.

00:02:02 --> 00:02:24 the little weird Pac-Man sounding instrumental. I mean, everything about this was screaming, it's either going to be amazing or absolute trash. And it was amazing. Because you don't know how the public's going to react to the song. You'd be like, yeah, guys, this is a hit. But like, how do you know? But apparently they freaking knew. Because this song...

00:02:25 --> 00:02:53 Mm-mm. I remember being in dance class and my friend and her sister was like, we should learn this. Because all we used to wear to dance class were leotards, tights, and either tap shoes, ballet shoes. There was no toot-to because they wanted to see everything. I was like, y'all got us jelly beans walking around. But the point is, we had our leotards. We were ready to go. You put us in the video. This is a choreography that caused 10 million ankle injuries worldwide. I'm sure. The heels. Oh, yeah. Like, come on. People attempting to walk up a ramp.

00:02:53 --> 00:03:23 Oh my God. Yeah. I mean, even she's falling down. But yeah, this song is kind of deceptively genius. It's like robotic, but it's danceable. It just feels like Destiny's Child got possessed by a metronome because of the background vocals that are present too. You know, can you imagine the girl singing this with her? That'd be so... I mean, they kind of did. They did at the Super Bowl, yeah. They did. But like, if it was like a Destiny's Child song, that would have been interesting. But something about it just fit her. We all thinking about the hump, the big hair hump. What is that thing? That lump on her? Yeah. Y'all know I'm talking about the puff.

00:03:23 --> 00:03:50 The bump. The bump. Yeah, I'm talking about the bump. But yeah, no, I like this song because she's like, listen, you know, you didn't want me. I found a man that does. Let's go. Ladies, gentlemen, whoever you are, don't stay where you're not wanted. If you are made to feel like you are worth losing, then they're worth losing. Okay? And that's what the song's about. She mentions Darion for like the last time ever until... Until like maybe Lemonade or something. But like...

00:03:50 --> 00:04:09 She mentions Darian Jeans. She's acting up. I love the bridge. Yeah, the bridge is the best part. Yep, and done live, she always jazzes it up a little bit. Like, this is such a fun song, and I didn't realize how much she doesn't really sing in the chorus as much until we saw her perform it. And I was like, oh, you're holding it down in these verses, girl. You were holding it down.

00:04:09 --> 00:04:23 For sure. I mean, yeah, this is just a very well-written pop song. Yeah. They definitely had, you know, commercial radio in mind. It's just so catchy and fun to sing along to. It's just, there's so many undeniable hooks within it. Yeah. Yeah.

00:04:24 --> 00:04:41 And yeah, the bridge... Yeah. I mean, just to sing along to... Don't! You know? It's so much fun. And then you pair that with iconic choreography and you've got a pop hit, right? Yeah. It's just such a great anthem. Yes. And you know, it's interesting. I...

00:04:42 --> 00:05:08 I feel like for me, I get that this was such a commercially successful period for her. I think because I was a fan from kind of the Destiny's Child years, I often forget actually that it's as big as for the casuals. For the casuals, it's as big as like Say My Name. It's as big as Crazy in Love. Like I actually find that crazy because for me, I'm just like, oh, it's not her.

00:05:08 --> 00:05:21 To me, it's not a signature hit, but I feel like for the general public, it definitely is. I would put a lot above it. I'd put a irreplaceable over it. I'd put Formation up there. I'd put other ones above it, but I feel like I'm...

00:05:21 --> 00:05:47 that's not what the general public would do. Like this would for sure be in the top three, you know? No, that is so valid. Cause when you think of, when you mentioned Beyonce, you think of the hand flick, they'll go, Oh my God, Beyonce, Beyonce. It was just like, Oh my gosh, really? That's all, you know? Yeah. And some people know this better than crazy in love, which is just crazy to me. I mean, it plays at weddings everywhere, which is hilarious to me. I'm like, you're getting married. You mean your friends who go to catch a bouquet? I mean, honestly, even at cowboy Carter, Oh yeah. The tour,

00:05:47 --> 00:06:16 When this came on, people lit up. Uh-huh. It got everyone, you know? Yeah. So, yeah, it's awesome. It's a classic. Yes. And the video. It's a pretty perfect pop sign. Yeah, the video is also perfect. Yes, I want to say it now. I'm not sure where everyone was when Beyonce kind of mentioned her. I'm not sure if anyone mentioned it. People were saying she's copying Fosse and Gwen Verdon, their video, because there is a video of three women.

00:06:16 --> 00:06:37 dancing and the choreography is very similar honey i don't think they don't know like i don't think it was like a whole it wasn't a steal it was an homage like the people that she was getting choreographed by they came from the dance world dancers know we know um but also i think this video is so iconic because like if you were looking at k-pop like

00:06:37 --> 00:07:05 how many freaking miles away the Wonder Girls had be my baby and the whole video was black and white, was kind of like an homage to Beyonce's homage. So this video is definitely the SNL skit. Everything is very iconic. Like, oh God. So many iconic moments. Yeah. And even just the imagery is so striking. Like, it's just her, two dancers. Yeah. Just dancing the crap out of it. I mean, of course there is that VMA performance where there's just an army. Yeah. Yeah.

00:07:06 --> 00:07:22 Army. Yeah, I think of the growling. But that silhouette, and it's obviously used throughout a lot of the videos of this era, but her two dancers just killing it. Yeah. It's so simple, but it's so, so effective, and it's so captivating. Like...

00:07:22 --> 00:07:42 You can't, when you watch it, you can't walk away. Yeah, no, she's great. She's great. This is like, I get it. This is like her, her moments. This is her song. So, Big Fat, Stinkin' Ten. Because I do like the song. Aside from like the old pop, pop influence. I think it is a, this is a pop show. Yeah, yeah. And this is a good pop song. I'll give her that ten.

00:07:42 --> 00:08:09 Okay, I will give it a nine. How dare you? Yeah, sorry. I think she has better. Ooh. And on this album, too. On other albums and this album. Ooh, that's so valid. It's so bad. It's hard. It's hard. If I think about her, like discography? Nah. Yeah. Yeah. All right, guys. Moving right along is radio with Beyonce writing, Rika Love on the track, James Schaefer, a.k.a. Jim Johnson, and Dwayne Nesmith.

00:08:12 --> 00:08:30 Alright, this song... I mean, it's so much fun. Just the pronunciation alone. Rightyow! Uh-oh! Yes, like that verse, it's so fun to sing along to. But you can just tell, she sounds like she's having fun singing this one. Yes.

00:08:31 --> 00:08:56 And the production is great, too. They also feel it. It feels like they had fun making it in the studio, too. Like, you have all the little elements in it, like the boom with the little biggle. Yeah. All the synths. The beat is the super kind of harsh and very powerful moments. There's some really cool backing vocal layers in here. And then I love the outro, too, with, like, the low synth. Oh, yeah. The whoa, whoa, whoa. Yeah. But this is just fun.

00:08:56 --> 00:09:23 Yeah, I think it is. I remember this song because obviously I had the album. Oh, yeah. Y'all don't know if you're just tuning in our second episode. She only has the standard one, though. She couldn't afford the deluxe. I couldn't get cheese on my hamburger, y'all. I was like, Mom, I have money saved. Take me to... Wait, remind me what songs are missing on the standard for the Sasha Fierce side. For Sasha Fierce, yeah, Put A Ring On It, Radio Diva, Sweet Dreams, and Videophone. It stops there. Yeah.

00:09:24 --> 00:09:48 It starts there. Okay, so no hello or scared of lonely. Okay, interesting. Yeah. He's crazy. I got it when it came out a couple days later. I forgot what store, but I got it. But yes, I heard the song also because one year during a recital, the company I was with, the dance team I was with, they did like a radio. Like anything on the radio, any hits on the radio, any song about radio. So we did Radio Gaga, things like that. Yeah.

00:09:48 --> 00:10:02 We had radio as one of the dance songs. I forgot what the dance was, but I remember hearing, I'll be on the hotline like every day, every single Saturday for months. And I was like, get me out of here.

00:10:02 --> 00:10:25 So I know the song top to bottom. I think her saying how much she loves music and how like it could be the only person she can be in the room with the door closed. I mean, it's kind of cheeky because it's like I was so young and I was always in love with music and music made me feel good. I think it's kind of cute. It feels like a little electro poppy. Yes. Yes. It feels like 2008 in an MP3 on an iPad shuffle and an iPad.

00:10:25 --> 00:10:47 Yeah, is it Apple Shuffle? iPad Shuffle? iPod Shuffle. Oh, jeez. Wow. Sound like my mother. I was raised by a boomer and it shows. So yeah, the synths are so fun. It's playful. And I appreciate the song for sure. It's just so funny how they're alluding to this radio being like her lover.

00:10:47 --> 00:11:13 I'm here for it. I'm here for it. Songs aren't like this anymore. So it's fun, you know? Yeah. I will say the performance from the I Am World Tour, like the version that they put on the film. Oh, yeah. I hate that effect that they put on it. Oh, what the, like, was it? Like, what kind of effect is it? It's where they, like, remove some frames so it feels extra jerky. Oh, like the Candace squirrels in my pants dance. Like, you've seen Phineas and Ferb.

00:11:13 --> 00:11:32 Yeah, but I don't know what you're talking about. It's like the word tick-tick dance. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It makes it tick-tick. Yeah. Oh, because she had those robot girls behind her, remember? I get that. But I know that Beyonce can snap and hit things. She doesn't need the extra effect for you to feel that, like, you know what I mean?

00:11:32 --> 00:12:00 That is actually really funny. You know what it is? I'm like such a purist when it comes to like concert DVDs and stuff. So I actually hated the way I am was edited with all the extra documentary footage and the rehearsal footage and kind of the ins and outs of you get half the song and no. Give me the tour. And his home video and said I get it. Give me the tour. Give me the tour. But yes, this will not take away from my score. I give it an 8.5. Oh, nice. I gave it an 8.

00:12:02 --> 00:12:20 Okay, moving on to Diva. This was done by Beyonce, Chandra, Bangladesh, Crawford, and Sean Garrett. And this was released as a single to U.S. Urban Radio in January 2009 and peaked at number 19 on the Billboard Hot 100.

00:12:21 --> 00:12:50 Word up. Okay. This is the evergreen song that has yet to escape a playlist. It is evergreen. Yes. Because literally every single tour that she's had that I've noticed, this has been on it. It's crazy. And now we know Blue loves it too, so it'll be there forever. Yes, go Ivy League running strong. Let's go. So yeah, Single Ladies was the hit. This was the attitude that came right after. It's like, I know I'm good. Uh-huh.

00:12:50 --> 00:13:17 I appreciate this song so much. Because this was like one of the first times, if I'm not mistaken, that she publicly, like as a single released, I am that girl kind of song. Because before it was kind of like, I love this person. I love him. Don't cheat on me. I'm independent. But this one's like, I made this money since I was 15. I've been sitting in these heels. Don't say nothing to me. I've been singing. She ain't gonna sing like this. At the time, Amelie was really hot.

00:13:17 --> 00:13:39 with the Little Wayne's Amelia. So I think having that, and then, you know, her man had a song called, I'm a Hustler. So the whole, like, the Divas of Bimo version of the Hustler still maintain that Amelia kind of repeat. Very smart on the- Very cool. Yeah, very cool, very smart on the production side. But yeah, this is such a-

00:13:39 --> 00:13:56 Fun song. It's like, Beyonce was declaring that she was a boss before the boss was an aesthetic, which is crazy now. It is definitely a warning for anyone to mistake in humility for weakness. Like, she has always been a moment. And this song was one of those, like...

00:13:56 --> 00:14:10 Hello. You know how long I've been doing this? You look up to me, the leotards, me, the heels, me. I am the girl. So I appreciate it. Again, this song is very much per my last email. I am still that girl.

00:14:12 --> 00:14:28 Yeah. I mean, so it's interesting. Like, I think of this more as a signature hit than single ladies a lot of the time, because I think it does have that status, at least among the five. Yeah. And again, maybe I'm wrong. Maybe I'm like a total outlier here.

00:14:28 --> 00:14:46 But I do think it's up there. It's kind of just an iconic moment for her. I do love that she, you know, we have used D.Va in a more positive way, you know, through the years, but her also just kind of claiming it, you know, and using it as a badge of honor and a badge of power almost. I think that's really cool.

00:14:46 --> 00:15:14 And yeah, I think it has grown in meaning over the years. And now we have the iconic memes with the she ain't no diva. Oh my God, yes. It's so funny. Yeah, the production is great. I love the squeaky synths, just the bounciness of it all. Yeah. And even the choreography too. It's all just like bouncing, a lot of bouncing, which is fun. And the way it's written is cool. It is written more like a rap song than a, you know, kind of typical pop structure. Yeah, totally. Yeah.

00:15:14 --> 00:15:36 And her vocal, you know, it's just so rhythmic. There's just enough attitude in there. She's not trying too hard. So it's a pretty perfect track. I think so, too. Very more hip-hop driven. So I think in terms of, like, Singla's being the pop one, this was more of, like, the R&B hip-hop inspired that, like, she sits really nice in. Yeah. Yeah.

00:15:36 --> 00:16:06 She is a diva. And the music video... What do you think of the video? Yeah, the music video. I wish she would have featured a little bit more of that mood glare that she wears on the tour. Oh yeah. Because I love the little motorcycle situation with the shoulder pads and the hips and stuff like that. It's like featured in the photo shoot. But it is what it is. A video, black and white. It's Ashley. I don't know the other dancers. I feel so bad. But it's just Ashley is the one I always remember because she was dance captain. Yeah. But yeah, everyone had their little silk presses and they were shoulders, diva, shoulders, shoulders, shoulders, shoulders.

00:16:06 --> 00:16:29 And I remember telling you, I was watching the video, she ain't doing nothing. Not saying she's not a good dancer. But when you look back on it, literally up until Lemonade, she wasn't really hitting hip-hop-y kind of moves. Like, this is kind of like the first time she was hitting some grooves in a little bit. But it was mostly commercial. She's in the heel. Like, she wasn't really freaking it like she has been on the tour. Like, if you guys look at the video now...

00:16:29 --> 00:16:55 She ain't doing nothing. And then at the end, when she's kind of doing this little, little arm bob and she's in a catch in this groove, I'm not saying it's easy to do, but she's just so charismatic where you're just like, I'm going to do this little baby rattle thing. What the heck is this? I want to get my little swag, that baby rattle thing. I think the part of the video that makes me kind of laugh the most is her covered in either baby oil or glycerin. I don't know what she's with the mannequins. And I was like,

00:16:55 --> 00:17:14 Okay, whatever, but go on. Yeah, I love this video. I do love that she kept the black and white thing going for this one. Yeah. It gives it kind of a timelessness a little bit. I think because if it was colorful, I think the fashion might have been just, it would feel really. Yeah.

00:17:14 --> 00:17:43 kind of late 2000s, I guess. Wow, nice. I think the black and white helps with that. Yeah, I agree with you. She's just so much looser as a performer now. Like you can tell even watching performances from Renaissance and Calvary Carter, like it's a lot more relaxed than it was back in the day. Like she really is putting on the character back in the day. Now it's just more innate, I think. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. Anyway, I love this song. Give it a 10. This is the 10. Respect. This is also... Oh, snap.

00:17:43 --> 00:18:05 Oh, now this is also a 10. It's multiple. Up next is Sweet Dreams, and this was done by Beyonce, Rico Love, Jim Johnson, and Wayne Wilkins. And this was released as a single worldwide in July 2009, picking at number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 5 in the UK. The UK has taste. Let's go. Yeah.

00:18:10 --> 00:18:26 This is one of my favorite Beyonce songs ever. It's so weird. I like it. Ever. Yeah. Ever. And it's on my karaoke set list as well. Respect. It makes a great duet because you have the lines overlap. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Kind of like switch it off, you know?

00:18:28 --> 00:18:49 I got a whole vocal arrangement ready to go. I was about to say. But yeah, this one is definitely more electropop. Like you mentioned, radio has those elements. But this one is kind of more pure electropop. Yeah. And I just love the melody of it. Like it almost, you know how she sang it as a ballad on the Vegas show? Yes. It is one of those songs where it feels like it actually could have been written that way first. Yeah.

00:18:49 --> 00:19:16 It could have. Maybe on a piano. Someone's kind of making the words. And then I was like, oh, wait. Yeah. Let's put a beat behind it. Let's put a beat. Yeah, I will say justice for Sweet Dreams. Oh, my God, yeah. Because she's rarely ever performed it. Oh, my God, yes. And when she has performed it, it's always been, like, averse. I know. You know? I know. For the most part. I don't know what the beef is. I'll get the beef. And, of course...

00:19:16 --> 00:19:27 You should check out our Renaissance review if you haven't. The Renaissance tour review. But that tease that she did on that tour was painful. She's so mean for that. So mean. So mean.

00:19:28 --> 00:19:50 Like, I feel like she knows. Like, come on. Come on. You know. Biasa Giselle knows. Carter. Yeah, she knows. You don't give us what we want. Sweet Dreams is so good. It's very synthy, like dark synth haunting. When I think of this song, I think of the dance with the hip, right? Yeah. But I also think of Shiny's key because it was...

00:19:50 --> 00:20:13 It's so strange. Okay, guys. If you are new to our show, we talk about global pop music. And also, if you're new to the show, you might as well subscribe. You know, you're here. Subscribe. But, yeah, no. So, we listen to K-pop as well. And there's a group called Shiny. And they have a member named Key. He's a great dancer, great singer. And at one point or another on a TV show, they play Sweet Dreams. He goes, I love this. I know the whole dance. So, he sat there and did Sweet Snack. Sweet Snack.

00:20:13 --> 00:20:35 He was eating it up because it's so iconic. This song is loved. It's beloved. Okay. Like B-E-Y loved. Okay. But, you know, she goes off vocally. The bridge is so, like, eerie to tattoo your name across my heart. Oh, my girl. Let him go. Not even death.

00:20:36 --> 00:21:00 I was like, girl, let it go. But I love it. I love it. Yes, the drama. Yeah, the melody is tight. The vocals are light, but they're commanding. You know what I'm saying? Like, she does a really good job of singing a little bit more, like, in this nasal part of her voice, where it sounds a little bit more brighter and poppier. Not so, like, I'm trying to give R&B soul. So, yeah, I think this is great. And then, yeah, the one performance that we got for, like, you know, at least we got a chorus.

00:21:00 --> 00:21:29 Like for two seconds. Which one are you watching? Like thinking Glastonbury? Yeah. The one time. Yeah. Yeah. I sound bitter. I sound so bitter. But yeah, I think the Sweet Dream videos makes me laugh because I used to watch it on VH1 Soul. Yeah. And her floating out the bed all stiffly cracked me up. But yeah, what do you think about the video? I feel like during this era when I looked at the video, it seemed like so much more was going on. Like obviously 20 years passed. I'm like, okay. Yeah.

00:21:29 --> 00:21:36 Ain't nothing too much going on. But I remember this being one of my favorite videos and people having all these theories about the horse and...

00:21:36 --> 00:22:03 It's the devil. It's the black horse and the dove. And then her body's going in reverse. And it's like, y'all, she's having a nightmare. A beautiful nightmare. You know what I'm saying? I feel it's more of just like a fashion film kind of. Yeah. That's the vibe I get. Also, the dancer team that I think of is the... The chest pops. Yeah. Love that. That's what I think of. That's valid. That's valid. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.

00:22:05 --> 00:22:15 Okay, that's a close second. But yeah, the video, I think, is also a fashion film. But looking back on it, it's so funny. But they were eating this choreography up...

00:22:15 --> 00:22:36 Honey, with the little fingers around. Right here? Right here? Right here? If you're not watching, I'm so sorry, but I'm doing the head thing. And the numbers. Also, I did do some research. There is the full Europe Music Awards performance. Oh, yes. But I believe it's disappeared from YouTube. Reddit. Beehive. Help us. Yeah, I hope we're fine. Link it. Link it.

00:22:36 --> 00:23:02 No, but you're right. I remember. And then she also did, um, she didn't do Ring the Alarm, but she was wearing it. Wait, wasn't it like red that she was wearing? She was wearing red. Ring the Alarm was another year, right? Ring the Alarm would have been another year. It would have been a different year, for sure. But I remember, I think I remember watching Sweet Dreams. It was not an American performance for sure, which is whack. Also, okay, wait, I'm reading about this now. So she did perform it on the I Am World Tour, I guess, in some dates. And it's not on the DVD. Yeah.

00:23:03 --> 00:23:24 What is her beef with this song? What is that about? Oh my God. What is her? Hang on. Hang on. Listen, listen. If this needs to be cut for a clip on our pages, fine. So be it. Beyonce, Giselle knows Carter. Where is the performances of Sweet Dreams? You know we like the song, girl. Is it too hard? Do you think it's too hard for her?

00:23:26 --> 00:23:41 Really? You think this song's too hard for her? I don't know. I don't know. I mean, it's kind of high up there. Girl, lip it. I don't care. Lip it. Yes, she can lip if she lips other songs. Oh, hang on. That's not an excuse for Beyonce. This is true. Maybe she secretly hates this song.

00:23:42 --> 00:24:07 Yo, like Kylie Minogue with Locomotion. We're not going to hear it until she's like 50 years old. She loves Locomotion. I know. I'm teasing. But Beyonce's going to be like, all right, y'all. I'm 50 years old now. I know you love this song. It's called Sweet Dreams. And she's going to sing it as a ballad version. Watch. Tattoo your name across my heart. I do love that Vegas version. Okay. Yes. Okay. Beehive, help us out. Yes, please. Why does Beyonce hate Sweet Dreams?

00:24:08 --> 00:24:24 I love this 20 seconds we spent on this. I love that for us. Because it's true. So if it's no clue to y'all what score we might give it, I'm giving it a big fat 10. Yes, this is my other 10. My other 10? Yes. Go off. Okay. Okay.

00:24:25 --> 00:24:44 Moving on to Videophone. This was done by Beyonce, Shondre, Bangladesh Crawford, and Sean Garrett, and a single version featuring Lady Gaga was released in November 2009, and it was a swap for Beyonce's feature on Lady Gaga's telephone, and it peaked at number 65 on the Billboard Hot 100.

00:24:47 --> 00:25:05 Y'all painted dust. Shame on you. To be fair, Telephone is a better song. Yeah, it is. Yeah. It is. No, Telephone. I'm not going to lie to you. Telephone came out. She said...

00:25:06 --> 00:25:25 That one gets a 10. Sickening. They both sounded so good on that. You know what? This one I feel like is a little bit more leaning towards like, I don't want to say it's like a Southern hip hop kind of thing because that could be completely false. But I could also be not wrong either. But something about it has like this...

00:25:26 --> 00:25:51 it's it's mid-tempo it's a little trippy it's seductive it's a little bizarre the hi-hats in it irritate the mess out of me i'm not gonna lie i think because i watched the video too and like all the editing was on the hi-hats we both saw it it was it was yeah oh my gosh it was like seizure inducing but aside from that like i like the song because she's like um she's tapping into a little bit of that bb

00:25:52 --> 00:26:17 character that we don't get to know until partition you know i'm saying which is so funny because she has all these little things that she does with her voice and body of character but for her with sasha fierce just strictly but this is leaning toward bb for me because she's talking about like you want to listen we can make a movie on the video phone which is so funny because like what phone was out at the time it's like yeah whatever um but yeah i think this was like

00:26:17 --> 00:26:43 You know, don't just call me. Let's make a movie. It's a whole cinema experience. The guy is feeling her. She's like, you like my bag and the color of my nails? You can see that I got it going on. So I think this song is meant to be playful and purring. It's like a flirt and a flex combo. You know, she's definitely flexing on him, but he appreciates it. And I think it's so cute that she's just like, listen...

00:26:44 --> 00:27:12 Take my number down. Call me. And then, of course, I love the Gaga remix. Gaga is like that white girl in school that you're friends with. And, like, if anyone messes with her, like, you're going to hear from me. If you guys know what I'm talking about, you guys know. Like, that one white girl you've chilled with, you'll be like, yo, if anyone messes with you, I got you. Call me. Call me. Gaga's like that. Because she was quirking up the track. Yes. But we love her on it. We do. Because she's true to herself. She wasn't trying to...

00:27:12 --> 00:27:20 Yeah, she sounds confident. I love that little baby voice thing that she does for the talking bits. You wanna video me? You wanna video me?

00:27:22 --> 00:27:45 Oh, man. Yeah, I like this one. I love how the bass really pulses through. I think that's I think it's cool. It does rely on the beat kind of to really carry it, which I think is interesting just as a production choice. But it's kind of clubby, but it's restrained. Right. The whole melody is quite simple, but it's just got kind of a nice groove to it all. Yeah. And yeah, I think the lyrics are fun. It's like she's kind of.

00:27:46 --> 00:28:12 owning her image. Really. You know? She's controlling how she's seen. Yeah. And I think that's a cool concept for a song, especially just given, you know, her star power at that point. Yes. And then it makes sense because Lady Gaga was all about that too. Yeah. Right? Because Lady Gaga is an alter ego too. Yeah. That's amazing. So I think that's cool, just as a concept. But yeah, I will say this is one where I...

00:28:13 --> 00:28:29 I don't think about it very often, but when it comes on, I'm excited about it. Oh, interesting. I am. I don't think about the song often, but I do think about it. Cause of the, uh, uh, I think I just like this, the little things that she does in the song. Um, yeah,

00:28:29 --> 00:28:48 I don't know what a swag up is right when blade is tight means, but I just, I feel like I, you know. But you feel that. I feel like it resonates with this suburban bumpkin, but I'm teasing. But yeah, I think this was a song that I kept playing over and over and over and over again on my Sasha Fierce CD. Yeah.

00:28:48 --> 00:29:05 Really? Yeah, because I just like the way she sounds. I'm like, she sounds so hot. I mean, when you're young and people are talking about doing some, you know, shmexy, sensual things, I'm like, I'm going to hone it on that. When there's a bunch of other amazing songs, you're like, hee hee hee. Oh, interesting. Yeah, no, I was all about Sweet Dreams for sure. No, that's valid. Wait, Sweet Dreams on this?

00:29:06 --> 00:29:29 It is. Okay. But yeah, I had the look. I think I also like it because of the video that, you know, dance break with Gaga. Gaga was acting a fool in that video, but I'm here for it. I have to say from watching kind of the behind the scenes video phone, and I think there's behind the scenes of telephone too. The way Beyonce can adapt. She did it with Shakira too. Yeah. The way she adapts her.

00:29:29 --> 00:29:49 how she moves to the person that she's with is amazing. And only dancers will really notice it, I think. Right, right. And even with that just like snap, that body roll snap, she kind of tones it down and she matches Gaga's. Yes. Yes. People don't realize that's really hard to do, actually.

00:29:49 --> 00:30:09 I would know because I used to I used to choreograph background like background dancers but then also be a part of it and not match everyone so I understand I would have looking back if I was the artist I would have fired me but I've learned okay so what do you rate this one

00:30:09 --> 00:30:35 I'll give this one an eight. Oh, I was expecting higher. Okay. Really? Oh, no, no, no. If it was the remix, sheesh. Oh, okay, interesting. The remix does look better for me. Okay, I'll give it an eight as well. Oh, shoot. Okay. Yeah. Yeah, no, no. The remix is what gets higher. Fair. Yeah. Okay, up next is Hello! And this is done by Beyonce, Amanda Ghost, Ian Dench, and Dave McCracken. Hello!

00:30:39 --> 00:30:55 All right. This song. You know, when I think about this one. Just her screaming hello at everyone in the crowd. Yeah. That's exactly what I think of. Yep. Hello. Stop.

00:30:56 --> 00:31:11 I love it. This is, me too, it's so funny because it reminds me, it's like a big old power ballad with like R&B roots. Like this is Halo's slightlier, like slightlier. This is Halo's slightly messier cousin who shows up as birch. Hello! Hello!

00:31:12 --> 00:31:38 she's belting her heart out and she means it okay yeah it's very much love at first sight and maybe that thunderbolt soul recognizing moment in your life matters like it's like wow as soon as i saw you um i think it's a jerry mcguire line right you had me at hello yes yeah so i think that that line will always be like very relevant unless gen z has no clue what we're talking about um

00:31:38 --> 00:31:53 But yes, it's very sweet. The sentiment's sweet. But I don't know. After the hello, it was many years ago. When you, I was like, okay, you lost the neck. Someone's neck. Yeah.

00:31:54 --> 00:32:23 Yes, you're feeling it. I'm not Beyonce, y'all. But something about it is just like, it's not bad. I feel like it's a little bit more of a glimpse into, you know, what's his name? Jay-Z's like the relationship a little bit more. Because she's like many years ago. And, you know, like she's talking about how she met him and things. She's kind of integrating some of the story in there. I think it's interesting that this is the Sasha Fierce side because it's so loud. Yeah, I think it's just because it's like it's so it's such a performing song.

00:32:23 --> 00:32:52 Yeah, exactly. So it's not bad. It's okay, you know, for me. I don't want to lie to you. Yeah, this was also mostly only okay for me. I will say watching her perform it on both. Because on the IM tour, too, there's some funny moments in it, right? Because there's a lot of crowd interaction. So the performance is kind of elevated a bit for me. I think as a song itself, I do appreciate the drama in it. Like, especially in the verses, there's the cadence of it. The timing of it's quite interesting. And the piano and the strings in the production are really nice. Yeah. Yeah.

00:32:52 --> 00:33:08 I mean, the vocal is definitely super extra on this one. It's very throaty. Yes. You must be live. She was loud in that studio. Yeah, yeah. So yeah, I guess as a song, though, it's only okay for me, so I give it a seven.

00:33:08 --> 00:33:34 I have a 7-2 actually It's sitting right underneath Yeah Well moving on to Ego This was done by Elvis, Black Elvis Williams And Harold Lilly And Beyonce does have a producer credit And this was released as a single In the US in May 2009 Along with a remix featuring Kanye West And it peaked at number 39 on the Billboard Hot 100 Ego

00:33:38 --> 00:33:49 We go. We're back to the horns. We haven't had a horn on this. Yeah. On this album. You know? We got it all through the tour. Yes, we did. I mean. Yeah.

00:33:49 --> 00:34:15 B-Day was horn, horn, horny. It was just horns everywhere, which is not a bad thing. I love me a good B-Day album. Me too. We love ourselves a good B-Day album. But yeah, so it's just sassy. It's brassy. Hips, piano, you know, a phallic metaphor. It can't be brilliant. I'm not mad at it at all. And then the remix having someone with one of the biggest egos I've ever seen in my life.

00:34:15 --> 00:34:30 You know, before he started tripping out, we're not condoning anything that he's done in the past 20 years. But back in the day before tragedy struck his life, the man was actually pretty normal. So, yeah, I think him on the remix makes sense. Who else but Donnie to have on a track?

00:34:30 --> 00:34:51 About an ego. But yeah, this is another song that's like D.Va, but it has the finesse of like Frank Sinatra or like, you know, Ella Fitzgerald. It's just jazzy. It's meant to be like this. I'm famous. I'm amazing. And he knows it. It's so big. I've got to keep my ego inside. But also it's turning you on.

00:34:51 --> 00:35:03 It's turning me on. Everyone's turned on by me. But yeah, I like that she does the whole I don't need no beat, I can sing it with piano thing. Love that part. It's so funny to me because all I hear is,

00:35:05 --> 00:35:32 She got the phlegm that day. It was so phlegm. No ski, no shade. Y'all know y'all hear it. It's not as pure as some of her other, like, you know, falsetto, head voice moments. It's just, it was raspy. And I was like, interesting, she kept it. When we were sitting down watching the videos, I remember I was singing the background vocals as the song was ending. The background vocals on this,

00:35:32 --> 00:35:53 When they do come in, nice and tight, very clean. I just love the ending. The whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. I love the ending. It's fun. But, yeah, I think it's cool. I think these are, like, the first couple of songs where I first heard, like, Curse, really. And I was like, oh, my gosh. Like, Diva. I was like, oh, my gosh.

00:35:53 --> 00:36:21 she cussed and then here she cussed and I'm like oh my god she's cussing I don't know something about Beyonce just always seems so good and pure and then your songs like Evo Diva and Ego it really kind of shows off like how more confident she was with you know kind of just being edgy quote unquote edgy like now it's like it dims in comparison but yeah um you know she's she loves the song

00:36:22 --> 00:36:37 Yeah, this is a great one. I do love the instrumental of it. Mm-hmm. The... You know? Yeah. I think it's fun. It's like, just the instrumental itself is already so good. Mm-hmm. The organ. Yeah, it's cool. And it's got, yeah, it's got a gospel feel to it. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.

00:36:37 --> 00:36:55 And then given the lyrics, it's kind of funny, actually. Oh my God. Yeah. All the double entendre with like this kind of gospel sounding production. A mess. Yeah. The vocal execution here, again, it's flawless. Like she's not over singing at all. It's just confident. She puts emphasis behind certain words. Yes. Um...

00:36:55 --> 00:37:25 yeah oh man like every vocalist just needs to learn yeah you know it's really difficult to listen to her and then go to most other singers and it's you really feel the difference no absolutely like literally it came up in conversation did you see the people with the BET awards like people were like wow all a lot of the singles from her time she's just shot my past i saw the stuff with maya yeah yeah yeah yeah um

00:37:26 --> 00:37:53 But yeah, this one's definitely a memorable one. Like, it really stands out in a good way on the album. It's very different from anything else on it. But, you know, it is performative. It is. You know, and it fits the Sasha Fierce concept in a different way. Because it's not as loud. Yeah. It's more just kind of quiet confidence. Yes. Yeah. Yes, you're right. And the video. And the video is great, too. The video is simple. Yeah. But so effective. Yeah.

00:37:54 --> 00:38:18 mm-hmm again yeah yeah i will say i'd never listen to the kandir remix you know uh i don't blame you yeah but yeah i just again it's a silhouette of her and the two dancers you got a lot of you know different moments you got the cane you got the chair um yeah super you get the wall oh my god yes the wall we love the wall

00:38:18 --> 00:38:47 I think Daniel Polanco choreographed this, if I'm not mistaken. I'm not sure if she choreographed a whole bit of it. But she is in a lot of... I mean, she did do Check On It and some, like, Run The World. She was with Beyoncé in the I'm Becoming stages. So, yeah, I think she may have had a hand in choreographing it. Because it's very, like, femme. It's very, you know? It's very in the pocket as well. Yes. And I'm going to complain again. Because this is another one on the I Am World Tour film.

00:38:47 --> 00:39:12 Yeah. Where we don't get the full performance. She shows us rehearsal footage and we get the last like 30 seconds on stage. You know what? I can't say that bothers me. I'm so sorry. I want the performance. She should have had like a clean, like quote unquote clean version of the tour where it's just straight up footage. Yes. Yeah. Yeah. I agree. I agree. All right. So. Okay. So I get this one at 8.5.

00:39:14 --> 00:39:42 I give it just an eight. Okay. Something about that scratchy. I don't know. Wow. That whole, that moment made you go down. I'm teasing. I'm totally kidding. Guys, I'm joking. Guys, I'm joking. I'm here for the Flynn. I don't mind it. For the Flynn? Yeah. Oh my God. Beyonce, we love you. But it was just, no, I think, yeah, just an eight. I don't like always go back to the song. I love like songs that like shook. This is like a B-Day album song.

00:39:43 --> 00:39:51 You say that like it's a bad thing. No, no, no. But B-Day for me has some other songs that I was like, wow. Like Sugar Mama tops this. You feel me?

00:39:52 --> 00:40:13 you know like like that so yeah up next is scared of lonely and this was done by beyonce solange rodney dark child jerkins la sean daniels rico love and crystal nicole not chantel nicole even though i do write my own music um it was rumored to have been a radio single but this never actually happened

00:40:14 --> 00:40:33 I'm scared of lonely. I like this one. I will say this is maybe one where I was like, this maybe would have made more sense on the I am side. But again, there is a lot of drama to the song. So maybe she felt it was more Sasha Fierce. But I feel like lyrically it feels very internal. Mm-hmm.

00:40:34 --> 00:41:03 You know? Oh, yeah. It feels very vulnerable. Yeah. So, I don't know. I guess it's kind of in the middle. And it wasn't on the standard edition, so. Yeah, I know. I got the booklets to prove it. I'm well aware. Yeah. I think the production is cool, though. It does feel very signature dark tiled with the heavy bass drum and it kind of creates all the synths and stuff. Again, I'm going to call it the Vegas show, though, because I love the more organic kind of piano-led version that she did on the Vegas show. I saw it.

00:41:04 --> 00:41:21 And again, Beyonce, please put that on streaming. Again, I used to listen to that famous album a lot. And I have since ripped it. So it is on my Spotify. But it deserves my 1 cent every couple days. You know?

00:41:22 --> 00:41:49 You know, they've increased it now. Oh. Yeah. Wow. Yeah. I forgot what the number is, but it's not 1. I think it's now. Two. Okay. Yeah. Okay. Yeah. In New York. I can't sleep for the rest of the states. Oh, okay. Okay. But yes, I think this song has a great melody. It's super powerful. This is another one where she just emotes so well. Yeah. And this is one I appreciate more now also as an adult. Yeah.

00:41:49 --> 00:42:02 more because yeah i think before i was kind of like i don't get it this doesn't fit you know that's valid i think because like you said it does sound very like i don't say that it sounds strong

00:42:03 --> 00:42:26 strong. Because she's not like, I'm scared of being lonely. She's like, I'm scared of being lonely. She's kind of giving it a little... Yeah, like it's performative. Yeah, she's performing. Because I don't want to say she's like, you know, belting it. She's not belting it. She's just a little bit stronger in her delivery. Yeah, I think the little harped schord situation... Is that a harped schord? Is that the instrument I want to say it is? It sounds like...

00:42:27 --> 00:42:54 I can't say that I liked this one when I heard it. It's not bad, but I think the production kind of turned me off a little bit. And I think you're right. I prefer like the piano version of the trilling. Cause it just doesn't do it for me. Not a bad song. Shout out to Solange. I don't know what part she wrote, but great. It's, it's dark. And it's like an aching R and B production. And I can appreciate that. Um,

00:42:54 --> 00:43:09 She has a good desperate edge, which I appreciate. Because I think at any point in time in our lives, you all kind of go, am I going to die alone? You know? So this song definitely is like, it's like she's not afraid of being in love. It's like she's scared of like not being.

00:43:09 --> 00:43:36 You know, that's a true kind of thing. Like, either you love your life or you love someone. Like, I like that. It's a haunting banger, you know, for the crying in the club crowd. That's me. I'm a crying in the club girl. But yeah, I think the song is not bad, but instrumental, I don't care for. Melodically, I like it, though. Yeah, that's fair. You don't love the kind of crazy sense. No, I don't. And it's like in the bridge, she's sitting there going, whoo! And she's like a beautiful owl. I love that part. Yeah.

00:43:37 --> 00:43:56 oh my god y'all listen she sounds like a beautiful what great there I love that part but yeah I get I'm surprised this was actually considered to be a single I kind of see why it wasn't yeah but I still like it I will give it an 8

00:43:57 --> 00:44:24 7.5. Okay, so that concludes Sasha Fierce. Of course, there are bonus tracks that were included on the platinum edition of the album, as well as just bonus tracks. I think there was one on the Japanese album. So if you'd like to hear us review these bonus tracks, you'll have to come join us on Patreon at patreon.com slash cctvpops. It will be an exclusive episode for our PAs, operators, and producers.

00:44:24 --> 00:44:45 So we'll see you there. So in the meantime, let's do our cutter keep of Sasha Fierce. Ooh, oh my God. Okay, I know my cut. Okay. I know my cut. I think I know your cut too, actually. Okay. What's yours? My cut would be... It's kind of obvious.

00:44:46 --> 00:45:09 I would say scared of being lonely, right? Like that's obvious for me. Scared of lonely. Oh, my bad. See? You don't even know the title. Yeah. Don't even like her that much. But a close second kind of would probably be radio. Oh. Yeah. Yeah. Kind of probably. But I would say scared of lonely. Scared of lonely for sure. I'm not like into her. Okay. And what is mine? Yours is telephone. Telephone.

00:45:10 --> 00:45:35 No, mine is hello. Oh, dang, I forgot. I forgot about hello. And you meant video phone, right? Yeah. Oh. Yeah, yeah. No, mine is hello. I'm struggling. I'll take the intro performance of the Vegas show as kind of the ultimate version of that. But I don't really need to listen to that otherwise, I think. For a keep, I have to do Sweet Dreams. Ooh. I have to.

00:45:36 --> 00:45:57 It's tough, though. Between that and D.Va, it's really tough for me. Yeah, I'm fine. I'll keep D.Va then. I'll keep D.Va. Because, you know, what it became? Legendary. Mm-hmm. It did. Okay, so overall thoughts on the Sasha Fierce.

00:45:57 --> 00:46:16 You know what? This was definitely a precursor. This is definitely a precursor to what Lemonade was going to become. I feel like 4 needed to happen for her to really step into it. Because, I mean, 4 wasn't bad, but I feel like it didn't give us in-depth kind of what's going on with this album. Yeah. This feels a little bit more...

00:46:16 --> 00:46:38 uh confessional and i even confessional just feels a little bit more like in your face like um school and life is one of my favorite songs on four right but like it doesn't compare to like a diva or like a video phone there's something about her saying that i'm the girl you think i am and i'm not changing that is really impressive to me and i feel like that didn't happen until we got self-taught not even eliminated

00:46:38 --> 00:47:06 Self-titled even. The confidence that she has here is stuff that we saw on self-titled, you know? So I don't know why I keep jumping to Lemonade. My bad. But yeah, self-titled definitely you know, is like the transmutation, the physical embodiment of the shadow that Sasha Fierce was casting. So I'm just like his album's solid. And I think because it wasn't a solid half of an album, a lot of people readily identify songs.

00:47:07 --> 00:47:22 From this album, you know? Yeah, I would say if you take out Hello and Scared of Lonely, you look at the standard album, or yeah, if you look at that track listing, it's a pretty iconic album, I would say. Yeah, yeah.

00:47:22 --> 00:47:46 Yeah, I think it's cool. I agree with you. Like, now that we've now seen her, like, you know, almost 20 years later and seeing where her music went, it does feel like this is her stepping into being a little bit more kind of balancing the experimentation with the commercial. She's stepping in and owning her confidence a little more. Yeah.

00:47:46 --> 00:48:14 I don't want to say genuinely because I think she always has, but I feel like with the first two albums and through Destiny's Child, you could just see she was just trying so hard. Yeah. You know, she was really just, she was proving herself. Yeah. Like she wanted to, she was really just putting her absolute all into just making everyone see that she's a star. Yes. And this is kind of that instance where she's finally like accepted, like, no, I am a star. Yeah.

00:48:14 --> 00:48:39 True. Word up. And you can kind of feel that confidence in here that maybe isn't as present in B-Day and Dangerously in Love. So I think, yeah, I think it's cool to kind of re-listen to this now knowing kind of where she went as an artist. Yeah. Because it does feel like a transitional moment for sure. And I love it. I think it's a great, I think it is a great project. I can see why it was so successful at the time. Yeah. Yeah.

00:48:40 --> 00:49:10 But I, again, I think people always associate this as just the if I were a boy kind of single ladies era for the most part. And again, I think those two songs are not her best, actually. Mm hmm. You know, but as a project, I do love the full album. Yes. Yeah. Yeah. So I guess looking at the full project. So I am Sasha Fierce, right? Both discs. Yeah. I would give it. Ooh, this is hard. What would you give it?

00:49:11 --> 00:49:33 I think I want to stick with an eight because I am does kind of drag a bit because there's a way to kind of be softer, sweeter without being like everything's piano lead in, you know, like, yeah, yeah, yeah. There is a way of doing it. As we saw from Cowboy Carter with, you know, a lot of the slower stuff. There's a lot more you can do. Yeah. Um.

00:49:33 --> 00:49:42 So I'll give it like an eight. It might dip lower. I don't think it would go any higher. But yeah, eight. I'll match you with an eight. I think the highs are super high. Mm-hmm.

00:49:43 --> 00:50:11 So I feel like that kind of drags the whole thing up a little bit. Yeah. Yeah. You know? Yeah. But like I said earlier, this is the shadow of what self-titled became. Like, this is like, you know, how I'm playing with everything, you know? Yeah, it's interesting because now when I actually think through all of her albums, this may be actually one of my least favorite. Like, as a project. You know what? Yeah. You know what? Okay, hang on. Real quick. Greenlight or D.Va? Greenlight. Same. Let's go. All right, guys.
