[00:00:00] What's up y'all? We've got some cute kitty cats, girls making lots of noise and some virtual babes breaking necks.
[00:00:06] That's right. We have the K-pop Hop Off for October 2024.
[00:00:15] And this month we're joined by Vanessa Jefferson, a multi-talented powerhouse.
[00:00:21] She's a songwriter, a tarot card reader and a relative of one of today's biggest pop stars.
[00:00:27] And she's read for K-pop idols like Woosung from the Rose, Sorn, Alexa and more.
[00:00:33] So in addition to giving us her honest opinions on today's songs, Vanessa will also be giving a reading too.
[00:00:40] I'm so excited. Welcome Vanessa.
[00:00:42] Hi everybody! How's it going?
[00:00:45] We're so excited to have you on. So first, tell us. Tell us about your experience as a K-pop fan.
[00:00:54] Oh wow. K-pop, it's really changed my life. I'll tell you what. Like ever since I first heard IU and 21 and Girls Like Red Velvet,
[00:01:07] it really just opened my mind up to what music could even be.
[00:01:12] As I think at the time when I first heard them, there weren't many girls out there. I think it was just One Direction.
[00:01:19] And I was like, what is this? Like rest in peace, but what is this?
[00:01:24] So I said, listen, K-pop, it just came out of nowhere and it snatched my wig and I've never been the same.
[00:01:31] Not the wig!
[00:01:33] From the root.
[00:01:36] And so you actually have now kind of worked professionally in K-pop as well.
[00:01:41] So how has that whole experience been for you?
[00:01:43] Oh my gosh. It was the most like serendipitous situation I've ever been in.
[00:01:48] Like during the pandemic, I randomly went to Korea and I said, listen, if I've got to be quarantined somewhere for God knows who,
[00:01:57] I might as well go to Korea and do it.
[00:02:00] So I hopped on a plane and lived in Korea for like three weeks, I mean three months rather.
[00:02:05] And I randomly walked into a vegan restaurant in Itaewon and that's where I met Alexa Zaneybro's manager,
[00:02:16] where we got to talking and she's like, what are you doing here?
[00:02:20] I said, I want to be a songwriter.
[00:02:23] And she said, well, there's this gal called Alexa, you want to write for her?
[00:02:27] I said, sure. So she sends me some beats. I go into my hotel room and the first song I wrote was Obsession.
[00:02:36] And it ended up on her EP. So that was my first cut out of like just random serendipity meeting people
[00:02:43] and just being myself out in the streets of Korea.
[00:02:47] Yes, being in the streets is beneficial. Y'all heard that. Get out there. Go to go to the cafes.
[00:02:54] Follow your heart, honestly.
[00:02:57] I love that. And speaking of following, before we get any further, you should let us know,
[00:03:02] let our listeners know, where should people go to follow you everywhere?
[00:03:05] Well, you can follow me at Red Fairy DF. The D stands for discombobulated.
[00:03:12] The F stands for fairy because I'm a discombobulated fairy.
[00:03:16] And that's where you can find me if you want a tarot reading or if you just want to watch me in my crazy K-pop life.
[00:03:22] I'm always at a K-pop concert or bopping around New York or Korea or Japan traveling and just doing the most out of these streets.
[00:03:33] So if you want to follow some silliness or, you know, learn your life, I'm here at Red Fairy DF on Instagram.
[00:03:41] That's where I reside.
[00:03:43] Yes.
[00:03:44] Yes. Love that.
[00:03:45] You're great.
[00:03:46] Love that.
[00:03:46] It's gonna be fun.
[00:03:47] Yes.
[00:03:48] So if you're new to CCTV and our pop-up episodes, every month we put up polls on our Patreon, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube community pages at CCTV Pops.
[00:03:57] And you get to vote for three of K-pop's biggest releases of the month to battle it out in our song, video, and performance rounds.
[00:04:05] And of course, Patreon members get priority choice.
[00:04:07] So make sure to come join us at patreon.com slash CCTV Pops.
[00:04:11] We do have a free tier, so you should definitely come out, hang out with us and our producers, Emily, George, Lily, Louis, and Juliet.
[00:04:18] Yes, that's right.
[00:04:19] And we're almost at 3K.
[00:04:21] Listen, y'all, I'm gonna keep saying it till we hit that number.
[00:04:24] Join the CCTV crew.
[00:04:25] Come to the brunch, honey.
[00:04:27] That's what we call our little sessions here at CCTV.
[00:04:29] The brunch.
[00:04:29] Come to the brunch.
[00:04:30] Don't be left out.
[00:04:31] Okay.
[00:04:32] Or do.
[00:04:32] But then you're missing out on the fun.
[00:04:34] All the fun that we have here, especially here at Pop-Off.
[00:04:36] So Pop-Off is a fun, pure fun kind of vibe.
[00:04:41] All right.
[00:04:41] So don't take it too seriously.
[00:04:43] Join us and let us know what wins for you in these comments.
[00:04:47] Okay?
[00:04:48] Be nice.
[00:04:50] Yes.
[00:04:50] So this month, you voted for Kiss of Life, Get Loud, Say My Name, Waveway, and Espa's Whiplash.
[00:04:59] So let's get ready to rumble.
[00:05:03] Round one.
[00:05:06] All right.
[00:05:06] First in the ring, we have Player One, Kiss of Life with Get Loud.
[00:05:12] And this was done by Strawberry Banana Club, On Dime, Tanisha Jackson, Belle of Kiss of Life, and Kim Jin-seo.
[00:05:20] Mm-hmm.
[00:05:20] All right.
[00:05:21] So before we get into it, Vanessa, let's do a reading first.
[00:05:26] What's the energy around this song and this group?
[00:05:29] All right.
[00:05:30] Let's find out.
[00:05:31] I looked up Kiss of Life and I found out all the girls' zodiac signs.
[00:05:38] Mm-hmm.
[00:05:39] So Julie, she's an Aries.
[00:05:41] Okay?
[00:05:42] So that means she's fiery.
[00:05:44] She's going to give you performance.
[00:05:46] She's not going to care.
[00:05:48] Um, Natty is the Gemini of the group.
[00:05:51] So she's going to give us, oops, I don't know.
[00:05:54] Where am I?
[00:05:55] Oh, I'm cute.
[00:05:56] Um, then you've got Belle, the Pisces, the water, you know, real chill, but going to pop,
[00:06:02] pop, pop, coming real good.
[00:06:04] And then, uh, another Gemini, which is interesting.
[00:06:07] They've got two Geminis on the team, and that's Hanul, and she's the Magne.
[00:06:12] Uh, but let's see what the cards say.
[00:06:15] Oh, all right.
[00:06:17] It looks like, uh, Queen of Cups.
[00:06:20] So when Queen of Cups comes out, that means they're all on their Queen card, as, uh, Red
[00:06:25] Velvet would say.
[00:06:26] They're killing it.
[00:06:27] They're going in.
[00:06:28] Um, they're just really strong girls and have a lot of potential.
[00:06:32] Um, on another note, it is kind of, they just started out.
[00:06:36] So it might be a little, like, hard, a little struggle for them, but they really just need
[00:06:41] to keep believing in themselves.
[00:06:43] And they'll, they'll get it there.
[00:06:44] They'll get there.
[00:06:45] Kiss of life.
[00:06:46] If you want me to pull some more cards for them, I can, but I thought maybe two would be
[00:06:50] cute.
[00:06:51] Two is definitely cute.
[00:06:53] We've never had a reader on the show.
[00:06:54] We've had people read some of the groups, but never an actual read, you know?
[00:07:00] So that is awesome.
[00:07:01] Maybe we pull one more for each group at the end after we've chosen our winners.
[00:07:05] Agreed.
[00:07:05] Yeah.
[00:07:06] Yeah.
[00:07:06] Let's do it.
[00:07:07] Yeah.
[00:07:07] But they're in a good spot.
[00:07:09] Look at this.
[00:07:09] This is the 10 of, uh, pentacles.
[00:07:11] So it's like happy family, happy things.
[00:07:13] As long as they keep following their dreams, they'll be good.
[00:07:17] You know, speaking of following their dreams, they are getting ready to go on tour.
[00:07:20] I think it's called Kiss Road.
[00:07:21] So come on, come on, come on.
[00:07:23] I'm actually really excited to hear your opinion on the song.
[00:07:27] So we get their energy.
[00:07:29] We get how they are as a group.
[00:07:30] But what do you think of the sonics, the production, the vocals, the lyrics?
[00:07:36] Confetti, honey.
[00:07:37] That's, I love that line, that confetti.
[00:07:40] Like, don't want to wake up now.
[00:07:42] Like, it's just, it's really cute.
[00:07:44] They've got really nice, like, punchy words to come on and, like, get your attention.
[00:07:49] And it's like, like, K-pop that we love.
[00:07:53] Like, that good old-fashioned K-pop.
[00:07:57] And that's why I like this song.
[00:07:59] Yeah, you know what?
[00:07:59] I feel like with this song, um, I got, like, Neptunes.
[00:08:03] Especially with the Britney.
[00:08:04] Like, I know I may be young, but I got feelings too.
[00:08:07] And then they're whispering in the beginning.
[00:08:08] And their thesis statement is, I want to be myself and I can be my muse.
[00:08:12] And I was like, ooh, ooh, ooh.
[00:08:14] Ooh!
[00:08:15] So going back to what you were saying about them having that queen energy, it makes sense.
[00:08:19] I think that line is so good.
[00:08:21] And for them to kind of be so attitude-driven with the song Sexy Confident, like, it's all about enticing the listener to get lost in the rhythm.
[00:08:29] There's nothing more confident in telling someone, saying, I don't need you to like me.
[00:08:32] It's like, do I like you?
[00:08:33] Come, come.
[00:08:34] Come, honey.
[00:08:35] And this whole song is giving that.
[00:08:36] It's like, it's what I want.
[00:08:38] It's what I want to do.
[00:08:39] Like, everything about it is a 2000s pop princess dream.
[00:08:44] Like, if somebody released it, like, way back in the day, a girl group or even a solo artist from the UK or the US.
[00:08:49] I will say, though, my biggest gripe with the song is the chorus.
[00:08:52] Only because the song has so much going on with the verses.
[00:08:55] Like, the production in the verses and the pre-hook.
[00:08:58] Like, with the vocal trills and all that.
[00:09:00] Other things like that were carrying the song.
[00:09:02] And then when you get to the chorus, it's like, almost too understated.
[00:09:06] And I feel like if they would have went for like the, hey, we're the party at.
[00:09:10] Like, something like that.
[00:09:12] You're talking about getting loud.
[00:09:13] But there was no like, hey, or something like something brighter than like this cool girl thing.
[00:09:17] You can't be cool telling people to get loud.
[00:09:20] Because then it's just like, get loud.
[00:09:22] Yeah.
[00:09:23] It's like, no, go for it.
[00:09:24] Go for it, girl.
[00:09:25] Well, I think for me, I wish that the bridge may have been sung instead of rapped.
[00:09:32] Because they've been doing this rappy-ish kind of bridge.
[00:09:35] And they haven't had Hanul and Bell sing like they did in their debut.
[00:09:39] When they harmonized, when they debuted together.
[00:09:41] It was like, ooh, yes.
[00:09:43] We haven't had harmonies in so long in K-pop.
[00:09:47] Especially in a bridge.
[00:09:48] That wasn't like hidden within the harmonies of the vocals, right?
[00:09:52] I wish, even though Nati and Julie are great there.
[00:09:55] It would have been nicer to kind of really lean into that whole pop R&B thing that you're already doing.
[00:09:59] And let them have that moment where it's like vocals.
[00:10:02] Or have all four of them kind of contribute to it.
[00:10:04] Just to have it be like this little cute, sexy sing-off and then a rap thing.
[00:10:07] I'm like, you already did that.
[00:10:08] But thanks.
[00:10:09] But I'm good.
[00:10:11] On a positive note, I like the harmonies in the chorus.
[00:10:13] I just feel like it could have been a little bit bigger.
[00:10:15] A little bit more bold.
[00:10:17] A little bit loud.
[00:10:18] More loud.
[00:10:19] Yes.
[00:10:20] I pretty much had the same thoughts as you.
[00:10:23] I love the whole 2000s thing that they're going for.
[00:10:27] I think it's a great lane to stay in.
[00:10:29] The beginning, I also noted, was giving Pharrell.
[00:10:32] I thought Justin Timberlake's Like I Love You.
[00:10:35] Yeah.
[00:10:35] The way it's like the staccato acoustic guitar strum.
[00:10:39] And then the way they do the percussion as well.
[00:10:41] It's very reminiscent of Pharrell and Timbaland in that kind of era.
[00:10:45] So very much a student of that time.
[00:10:48] I agree.
[00:10:49] I think the chorus is maybe my least favorite part of the song.
[00:10:52] I think the verses are super strong.
[00:10:54] Their vocal execution is great.
[00:10:56] And the production is very lush.
[00:10:58] And I love how the pre-chorus gets a little ethereal as well.
[00:11:01] Before then, it gets a little kind of heavier for the chorus.
[00:11:04] I think the whole kind of ride that they take you on is great.
[00:11:07] But the chorus itself is not the most catchy.
[00:11:10] Like it just doesn't fully grab my attention.
[00:11:13] And yeah, I think if you're going to call the song Get Loud,
[00:11:15] I'm expecting something a little more explosive as well.
[00:11:19] I did read on Reddit, some people say it sounds like the Cheetah Girls.
[00:11:23] That sounds like Little Mix.
[00:11:26] Which I get that.
[00:11:28] I could see that.
[00:11:29] I think if Little Mix recorded this, though, it would not be a single.
[00:11:33] Oh, interesting.
[00:11:36] That's real, though.
[00:11:38] Yeah.
[00:11:38] I mean, they have been promoting Igloo as well as like a B-side promotion.
[00:11:43] And Igloo has been going off.
[00:11:44] But that understated, like, I'm so hot.
[00:11:46] These boys want me.
[00:11:47] It fits.
[00:11:49] So, yeah.
[00:11:49] Yeah.
[00:11:50] Yeah.
[00:11:50] And I just, I want to get in there and say, like, the chorus never caught me.
[00:11:55] And that's why I could never, I was like, where's it at?
[00:11:57] Where's, what's the catch?
[00:11:59] Like, where's it going to grab me?
[00:12:01] Especially as a songwriter.
[00:12:02] And the parts that, like, stood out.
[00:12:05] Like that confetti.
[00:12:06] I was like, oh, okay.
[00:12:07] Like, give me, give me a cute little word here and there.
[00:12:10] But, like, other than that, I was like, okay.
[00:12:12] Y'all sound good.
[00:12:13] You look good.
[00:12:14] But where, how am I supposed to remember this song?
[00:12:19] Okay.
[00:12:21] Well, moving on to Player Two.
[00:12:25] And their names are Say My Name with their song Wave Way.
[00:12:29] And it was done by Jo Hyun, Mize, Im So Hee, Jari, Sae Young, Bae from Joon Bae's, Chae Mae,
[00:12:40] and Chelsea Warner and Sophia Quinn.
[00:12:42] So, yeah, this one is interesting because they're a newer group.
[00:12:48] So, we have a rookie group in our midst.
[00:12:50] Yes.
[00:12:51] And they're noted because Jae Jong, right, from TVXQ or JYJ.
[00:12:57] He's, it's his company.
[00:12:59] It's his first big launch.
[00:13:01] So, yes, a brand new group.
[00:13:04] So, let's start with that reading.
[00:13:06] Oh, man.
[00:13:07] Brand new group.
[00:13:08] Let's see.
[00:13:09] So, Say My Name.
[00:13:12] Say My Name.
[00:13:14] Not the Beyonce song with Destiny's Child.
[00:13:17] Which kept coming up when I looked them up.
[00:13:20] Okay.
[00:13:21] So, Ten of Wands.
[00:13:22] First card to come out for them.
[00:13:24] And you see how this girl is walking down a long road.
[00:13:28] They've got a long, long road ahead of them.
[00:13:32] So, they really just need to, like, hold on to their belongings and stay on this road.
[00:13:39] And be patient with themselves because they're so young.
[00:13:42] But the thing is, this is a good sign.
[00:13:44] The sun is shining down on them, giving them, like, hope.
[00:13:48] So, it's kind of this beautiful juxtaposition against, like, how long of a road it's going to be for them and them to develop their careers.
[00:13:56] But they should know that the sun is always shining upon them.
[00:14:01] Oh, that's great.
[00:14:03] Yeah.
[00:14:03] Really, really sweet.
[00:14:04] Especially in this industry where it's tough to have longevity.
[00:14:08] So, if there's some longevity, that's good.
[00:14:10] It would be, really.
[00:14:11] It sure is.
[00:14:12] And I looked up all of their star signs.
[00:14:16] And so, going through these girls, because they're all new girls, we've got Hitomi.
[00:14:21] She's a Libra.
[00:14:23] And this is the oldest.
[00:14:24] And, like, it's good to have a Libra around to keep things balanced.
[00:14:28] But this is a very Libra-heavy group.
[00:14:31] So, Mei and Sungju, all three of them are Libras, air signs.
[00:14:37] So, we've got a lot of, like, thinking, thinking.
[00:14:40] Hopefully, they don't think too much.
[00:14:42] Um, then you've got Connie, who's a Capricorn.
[00:14:46] And that's great.
[00:14:47] An Earth sign to hold these, uh, air signs down.
[00:14:51] Give them some Earth-y base so they don't, like, fly out into the atmosphere.
[00:14:56] Um, then you've also got Soha, who's a Leo.
[00:15:00] So, that's going to bring a little spice to the mix.
[00:15:04] Bring maybe a little, um, maybe conflict.
[00:15:07] But, you know, we'll keep that with them.
[00:15:10] They're young girls.
[00:15:11] They've got to go through life.
[00:15:12] Um, Dohee, Sagittarius, which is beautiful.
[00:15:16] She's going to be the peacemaker, the one to keep everybody from flipping out.
[00:15:20] And, um, Junquay, the Gemini, another air sign.
[00:15:24] So, she's just going to be hippy-dippy, living her own life, on her own world, while everybody else is, I don't know, figuring themselves.
[00:15:33] That sounds about right.
[00:15:35] Ooh, this dynamic will be interesting.
[00:15:39] Very interesting dynamic, indeed.
[00:15:42] That is so fun.
[00:15:43] Because it's like, some people don't realize what you always talk about on our show.
[00:15:45] Like, sometimes these K-pop groups, they're put together almost as competition.
[00:15:49] They're put together as coworkers.
[00:15:51] So, sometimes it's just like, these are my coworkers.
[00:15:53] I've got to, like, you've got to learn them and, like, you know, stay used to them for every contract period and hopefully after.
[00:16:00] Um, all that being said, what is the energy around the song?
[00:16:04] How do you feel about the song?
[00:16:05] What do you think?
[00:16:06] How do you think?
[00:16:07] How do you think?
[00:16:07] It's super cute.
[00:16:09] Like, because they're so young, it's giving, like, meow, meow, meow.
[00:16:12] I love the video.
[00:16:14] I know we're not talking about the video yet.
[00:16:15] But, like, the production of the song, it's giving you that good, cute girl, like, here, introducing, here's the girls.
[00:16:24] I didn't hear too much rapping.
[00:16:26] It seemed like they were mostly singers, mostly, like, they have just cute little hi, whispery voices.
[00:16:34] And they harmonize really well together also.
[00:16:39] So, everything I heard, I really enjoyed, like, the little wave voice.
[00:16:44] I don't know what that means.
[00:16:46] I don't know what that means.
[00:16:50] I think it's one of those Conglish things where, like, for them, the wordplay might make a little bit more sense if you knew, like, Korean or, like, the way they're pronouncing things or the context of the song.
[00:17:02] Because they mention in this song, like, going to the, not going to the sea, but, like, having nothing to do on a lazy weekend.
[00:17:08] So, it's kind of talking about, like, just being carefree and, like, just saying hi to the world and going wherever you, you know, wherever life takes them.
[00:17:16] So, I think that's kind of, it also might be a double play where it's, like, how we're waving.
[00:17:20] We're, like, we're saying hi to you.
[00:17:21] This is our way of doing things.
[00:17:23] So, it could be, like, a double meaning.
[00:17:24] With Korean, you know, with K-pop, with those things, they'd be like, girl, there were several thousand meanings.
[00:17:29] Did you miss them all?
[00:17:30] And you're like, yes, I did.
[00:17:32] Like, every last one of them.
[00:17:35] Every single last one of them.
[00:17:37] Yeah, you know, for me, I feel like the song is quintessential K-pop girl group sound.
[00:17:41] You have Chae Jung, who was basically one of the first, like, visuals in K-pop, one of the biggest companies now celebrating their 30th freaking year of existence.
[00:17:51] So, it's like he has been through all of the sounds.
[00:17:55] He's been with the standard of the K-pop sound, you know, with, like, So Nyo Sidae's SNSD.
[00:18:02] So, I think this kind of has that girly vibe to it, but not being about love, being more about life.
[00:18:09] Like I said, the lyrics on it is a little bit less about, like, oh my god, I love you.
[00:18:13] We're gonna be so beautiful.
[00:18:14] It's more like, I don't know what I'm gonna do today, but I hope it's fun.
[00:18:18] Or, we'll see what the day where it takes us.
[00:18:20] I like this thought.
[00:18:21] It's very sugary and, like, sweet in terms of vocal delivery.
[00:18:25] And then the instrumental are kind of, like, a bubbly version of, like, future-based hip-hop.
[00:18:30] Because there is some, definitely some hip-hop in here.
[00:18:33] But it's so cute where it's just like, I don't see a Western artist doing this.
[00:18:36] It's not gonna happen.
[00:18:37] So, it's very distinctively Korean-pop.
[00:18:41] So, I will say their voices sound so, like, same-same right now.
[00:18:45] I couldn't really tell them apart.
[00:18:47] Which sucks a little bit.
[00:18:49] But then again, I also don't know these girls.
[00:18:50] But I think it's a good thing and a bad thing.
[00:18:53] But for the sake of, like, the song, it's good.
[00:18:55] Because it's, like, there are definitely a clear, like, uniformity of, like, these crystal, poppy tones.
[00:19:02] So, everyone's wearing high, right voice.
[00:19:04] So, it makes sense for their concept.
[00:19:07] I think it's gonna be interesting with Say My Name.
[00:19:09] Because, conceptually speaking, they can do anything.
[00:19:11] It's not like, you know, their name is, like, you know, Bad Villain.
[00:19:15] So, they have to do, like, the Girl Crush concept.
[00:19:16] Or, like, I'm, or, like, Black, Pink.
[00:19:19] Like, you're like, ooh, there's two different kind of things.
[00:19:21] Say My Name could be anything.
[00:19:22] Whatever name they decide to adopt will fit the concept.
[00:19:25] So, I feel like for this song, the lyrics, the vocals fit the whole vocal tone of the group.
[00:19:35] I will say, though, for this song, it's kind of in the vein of Weekly's After School.
[00:19:42] But After School's is a little bit more punchier.
[00:19:45] It has moments where you're like, ooh, the harmonies are really, like, a lot more distinctive.
[00:19:52] There's more, like, pop-out moments, more, like, earworm-y moments.
[00:19:55] This song, for me, didn't have too much earworm in terms of, like, vocals.
[00:19:59] Like, the chorus, yes-ish.
[00:20:01] And then the production, kind of.
[00:20:03] But nothing as strong as Weekly.
[00:20:05] But Weekly's not doing what Weekly used to do.
[00:20:07] So, right now, that whole space is wide open for that cutesy, harmonic, very bright, young girl concept.
[00:20:14] And they don't sound like new jeans.
[00:20:16] And they don't sound like illit, islet.
[00:20:18] So, that's good.
[00:20:19] But, yeah, this is not a bad song.
[00:20:22] I listened to the album.
[00:20:23] This is definitely the strongest song on the album.
[00:20:26] But they don't really have a sound.
[00:20:28] So, if this is what the sound they're going to kind of go with, we'll see.
[00:20:32] I don't know.
[00:20:32] It might work for them if they keep doing it and get better at it.
[00:20:35] But even the album kind of just had different kind of genres.
[00:20:38] That just didn't really make me go, okay, this group is going to be, like, X, Y, and Z.
[00:20:43] Which is kind of like a bag of, like, randomness.
[00:20:46] Yeah.
[00:20:46] From what I've seen, it does seem like the only reason this group is getting as much attention as it is.
[00:20:53] I guess, first off, Hitomi was a contestant on, I think, one of their produce shows.
[00:20:57] So, people were excited that she's debuting or re-debuting.
[00:21:02] I forget if she was in something else.
[00:21:04] But then also, of course, because it's Zhejiang's group.
[00:21:09] Because at first, I was kind of like, I don't really get why they're suddenly so big.
[00:21:15] Honestly, because I was kind of expecting maybe a Cupid moment.
[00:21:18] Like a 50-50 Cupid moment where the song is just so catchy and so good that it's a brand new group that everyone's catching on to the song.
[00:21:25] This song is not that.
[00:21:26] Like, I think if this was released by any other group, it would kind of not really gain that much traction here.
[00:21:33] Because I agree with you.
[00:21:34] It's catchy-ish.
[00:21:36] But I think because the tones don't really stand out and it is quite chill, it just doesn't make too much impact.
[00:21:43] It's kind of a good, like, easy listening song you can have on in the background.
[00:21:48] Which is, yeah, it's just interesting to kind of have that as your debut.
[00:21:51] Like, it's not much of a statement.
[00:21:54] But, Vanessa, I agree with you.
[00:21:55] I think the production is awesome.
[00:21:57] Like, I think if you're going for this cute sound, I love all the bubble sounds, all the little pops, the high synths, the kind of video gamey sounds.
[00:22:06] There's the cat meow in there as well.
[00:22:09] Like, cats, I guess, are just a thing right now.
[00:22:13] Yeah, we'll discuss that more, I guess, when we get to the video.
[00:22:16] But, like, it feels like it's, I don't know, it's a trend at the moment.
[00:22:19] And I don't really know who came up with that.
[00:22:23] Like, is it just because New Genes had that bunny and then everyone's like, we need an animal and they all chose a cat?
[00:22:30] Like, I don't know.
[00:22:31] They're like, hey, cats?
[00:22:32] Yeah.
[00:22:33] Yeah.
[00:22:34] Because New Genes monopolized that rabbit.
[00:22:36] You can't say, no.
[00:22:38] Yeah.
[00:22:38] Like, shit.
[00:22:40] Oh, my God.
[00:22:41] Yeah.
[00:22:41] Don't talk about my baby girl's New Genes.
[00:22:44] Oh, my God.
[00:22:45] I don't even think, if we could even go into it, those are my girls.
[00:22:49] And I just, it breaks my heart.
[00:22:52] Oh, my God.
[00:22:52] Yeah.
[00:22:53] We may need a bonus reading on them at the end of this episode.
[00:22:56] Listen.
[00:22:58] Woo!
[00:22:59] Exclusive to Patreon members.
[00:23:01] Come join us.
[00:23:02] Exclusive, y'all.
[00:23:03] Sorry, y'all.
[00:23:03] Pay the extra money.
[00:23:05] Come on.
[00:23:07] You heard the woman.
[00:23:08] All right.
[00:23:09] So, moving on.
[00:23:10] Moving right along.
[00:23:11] We have Player 3, Espa with Whiplash.
[00:23:15] And this was done by Mark Lowe, Neil Ormandy, and Soaky Siren, along with Shift Key and Leslie.
[00:23:22] All right.
[00:23:24] Can we get a read on the girl group?
[00:23:27] Espa.
[00:23:28] Espa.
[00:23:29] Okay.
[00:23:30] First card to come out is the Working Together in Harmony card.
[00:23:34] So, I feel like at this point in their evolution, they're really kind of getting into their groove and figuring out who they are.
[00:23:44] Knight of Pentacles is also coming out for them.
[00:23:47] And when knights come out, it's all about patience, especially Knight of Pentacles.
[00:23:52] You see how he's walking really slow, just pulling his horse behind him.
[00:23:56] Like, they've come to that point where they've worked so hard.
[00:24:00] And now they're coming to a really good pentacle for themselves.
[00:24:05] And then they are also getting the sun shining on them, which I'm being told to pull another card for them.
[00:24:12] The sun is shining.
[00:24:13] So, I'm like, Espa, keep it up, honeys.
[00:24:17] Oh!
[00:24:19] Indeed.
[00:24:19] I love that.
[00:24:20] We're going to get into it a little bit later, but what you're saying kind of pertains to what I put in my notes.
[00:24:26] So, not saying, like, you know, I'm all-knowing, but it's kind of nice that that synchronicity has occurred.
[00:24:31] Or not yet, but it's going to in a couple minutes.
[00:24:34] So, stay tuned.
[00:24:35] Stay tuned, CCTV fam.
[00:24:37] So, yes.
[00:24:39] How do you feel about Whip Whiplash?
[00:24:44] Listen, honey, take me straight to the club.
[00:24:47] I'm stumping on you hoes.
[00:24:50] I'm wearing, like, the tall lace-up boots.
[00:24:53] My heels are all the way up to my nose.
[00:24:55] Like, I'm just punching girls in the face walking through the club.
[00:24:59] Let me into my section.
[00:25:00] Let me into my section.
[00:25:02] Where are my bottles?
[00:25:04] Like, that's what this song does for me.
[00:25:07] Like, the just looks on their faces.
[00:25:10] Like, they are so, like, I don't care about you.
[00:25:13] But I do, but who are you?
[00:25:16] Like, I just, oh, it's so, like, I really, really like this Whiplash song.
[00:25:22] And it just, it's catchy.
[00:25:24] The Whiplash got me, like, every time I'm like, hold on, I want to do the little, little thing.
[00:25:29] The little clap.
[00:25:31] Let's just break my neck.
[00:25:33] Lovely production.
[00:25:34] It's just, like, we're grabbing the gals and taking them to the club.
[00:25:39] And that's what they did on this song.
[00:25:42] Yeah, I mean, this is a good example, like you were saying, of the club sound.
[00:25:48] It just, it creates a feeling.
[00:25:50] You always want to create, like, a soundscape.
[00:25:52] Not always, but it's good when you can create a soundscape.
[00:25:55] Pick me into a world.
[00:25:56] Make me imagine I've got a bar.
[00:25:57] Make me feel like I'm fighting for my spot in the thing.
[00:26:00] Like, last night, I went to the Vogue Ball, like I told you all last night.
[00:26:03] If this song would have came on, honey, honey, the girls would have been growling, all right?
[00:26:10] This song is a good example of how diverse Hyperpop is.
[00:26:14] And I think it's interesting because with Aespa, you can get very exhausted with the sonics of their singles.
[00:26:22] They're loud.
[00:26:23] They're in your face.
[00:26:24] But they have delved and dived into Hyperpop, the PC music thing, the whole thing that Sophie was doing, that Charlie did with the whole summer, basically, right?
[00:26:36] But it doesn't sound super derivative.
[00:26:38] Like, could she do this?
[00:26:39] Yeah, totally.
[00:26:40] Totally she could have done it.
[00:26:41] But I don't think necessarily of her.
[00:26:44] And the reason I don't is because you have this metallic, cold beat mixed with these R&B vocals.
[00:26:50] She probably doesn't do R&B smooth.
[00:26:51] So she gives you the voice of I don't care, the voice of cool, the voice of effects that fit sonically almost as an instrument with her music.
[00:27:01] These girls are trained to sing R&B and to rap with this kind of like tone that sounds like a black scent, which is whatever.
[00:27:08] But the whole idea is to kind of deliver this warmth, not like this Valley Girl thing.
[00:27:14] Like, what song was it?
[00:27:16] Spicy?
[00:27:16] It was giving Valley Girl.
[00:27:18] And that's totally fine.
[00:27:19] Give that.
[00:27:19] But for this song, you have to go, but a big splat.
[00:27:23] She has to kind of sing like this.
[00:27:25] Everything has to float.
[00:27:26] And it has to be airy, not dry and fried.
[00:27:29] We love a good vocal fry, but it didn't call for it because they have done it.
[00:27:32] Yes.
[00:27:33] Shout out to Giselle for freaking getting lines.
[00:27:37] Karina usually is like, bam, bam, bam, bam, bam.
[00:27:39] Winter usually bam, bam, bam, the whole song.
[00:27:41] And then Giselle's like, I have a line, right?
[00:27:43] Do I have a line in this song?
[00:27:44] My girl was in and out, all around.
[00:27:47] I loved it.
[00:27:48] I was happy for her because her voice stood out to me.
[00:27:50] I'm so used to hearing Winter and Karina, especially Karina.
[00:27:56] She can sing.
[00:27:57] She can rap.
[00:27:57] Yeah, but hers is a little bit more nasally.
[00:27:59] Giselle is kind of a little bit deeper.
[00:28:02] So it sounds smoother for me.
[00:28:06] Ningning's second verse sent me.
[00:28:08] Shout out to the songwriter, the top liner.
[00:28:10] Dude.
[00:28:11] Oh my God.
[00:28:11] That second verse came around.
[00:28:12] I was like, oh, yes.
[00:28:13] Yes.
[00:28:14] For me, I feel like where the song not falls short, but I'm like, oh God, I want some more.
[00:28:19] I guess plateaus, not fall short.
[00:28:21] It goes up and it kind of just stays.
[00:28:23] It's at the bridge.
[00:28:25] The bridge build is so haunt.
[00:28:28] It is building for like this diva house moment.
[00:28:30] But it's giving all of that, that I totally wish that toward the end of the song, we would
[00:28:36] have gotten some interjections of belching.
[00:28:39] Not the whole, yeah, yeah.
[00:28:40] Not the vocal slide thing that SM does, but some like top harmony of song going whiplash.
[00:28:48] Something to kind of really send it like a, oh yeah, like a moment of Kool-Aid man through
[00:28:54] the wall of all of that technological digital sonic.
[00:28:58] But aside from that, like you said, in my notes, I have the song that's very step on
[00:29:02] you foot on the neck.
[00:29:04] I just wish we would have gotten something that would have snapped the neck, like very
[00:29:07] much like dip on the floor.
[00:29:09] You know?
[00:29:09] So wham!
[00:29:10] I wanted that at the end.
[00:29:11] That's my only thing.
[00:29:12] But that's just me being greedy.
[00:29:14] That's just me being greedy.
[00:29:16] That's just me being greedy.
[00:29:17] They can do that with a live arrangement.
[00:29:19] Ah!
[00:29:19] Don't quit me.
[00:29:20] Yeah.
[00:29:21] We love a hybrid, you know, where they turn into remakes at the end.
[00:29:24] Yeah.
[00:29:25] But yeah, this is very much what I want from Aespa.
[00:29:29] Like they just fit the kind of cool and icy kind of thing.
[00:29:33] And this is very much what I think Le Seraphim has been trying to go for with like crazy and
[00:29:39] stuff.
[00:29:40] Oh yeah, yeah.
[00:29:40] But this just feels like not forced at all.
[00:29:45] Like the execution feels so natural to them.
[00:29:48] Like vocally, kind of what you were saying, like the balance is so good.
[00:29:52] The transition from the head voice to the belt, the breathiness of it, it just, it doesn't
[00:29:57] feel forced at all.
[00:29:58] Like it feels like that's where they just sit really well.
[00:30:01] And then production wise, this is very on trend.
[00:30:05] It's very much what is going on just in dance pop overall.
[00:30:09] Uh, and it has that kind of like you're a couple drinks in.
[00:30:14] Oh yeah.
[00:30:15] It has that kind of feeling to it, which I love.
[00:30:19] So yeah, this is definitely one of my favorite Aespa songs in a while.
[00:30:23] I'm going to be honest, the last few singles, I haven't paid too much attention.
[00:30:26] But this does feel like a moment.
[00:30:28] And there have been people in my life who have just seen the video who are not K-pop fans
[00:30:33] who are very into the song.
[00:30:35] So that's always a good sign.
[00:30:37] Yes.
[00:30:37] I mean, coming from Armageddon, this is not a bad ship at all.
[00:30:44] So yeah, I mean, at this point we are at the end of the first round, the song round.
[00:30:48] But hold on, hold on.
[00:30:50] I didn't get to say they're star signs, you guys.
[00:30:54] Yeah.
[00:30:56] Aespa, Karina, she's an Aries.
[00:30:58] So she's a fireside, but she's also kind of a baby.
[00:31:03] Even though she's the oldest, I feel like she's the baby of the group.
[00:31:08] Giselle being a Scorpio is going to keep everybody together, but also be a little aloof.
[00:31:14] Winter being the Capricorn is the earth of the group, like holding everybody together as well.
[00:31:20] And then Ningning Libra Scorpio is also baby.
[00:31:23] So it's like they've got two baby energies and two like a grown mama energies.
[00:31:29] And it feels like they're kind of like balancing each other in a very nice way, especially with the Ningning Giselle connection of both being Scorpio.
[00:31:38] Scorpios always stick together.
[00:31:40] And so they probably gang up on the Capricorn and Aries all the time.
[00:31:47] So we are at the closing of this round.
[00:31:50] We must pick our winner for the song round.
[00:31:54] Okay, so Vanessa.
[00:31:57] Miss Vanessa, what do you choose as your winner for this round?
[00:32:02] My winner for this round is Whiplash.
[00:32:09] I just have to.
[00:32:10] It's so good.
[00:32:11] It's so punchy and it's mature.
[00:32:14] Sure.
[00:32:14] And I feel like compared to the other two groups who are still babies, who are still fighting themselves,
[00:32:20] Aespa kind of has like a leg up on them because they know themselves just a little bit more and it feels more confident and more sure.
[00:32:29] I agree with you.
[00:32:29] Whiplash is it for me.
[00:32:32] Yeah, I have to agree with both of you.
[00:32:34] Whiplash is for sure the winner.
[00:32:36] Yes.
[00:32:39] Round two.
[00:32:42] Well, let's see if we agree for round two, which is about the video.
[00:32:46] So back to Kiss of Life.
[00:32:48] Get loud.
[00:32:50] So Chantel, start us off.
[00:32:51] What do you think of the video?
[00:32:53] Okay.
[00:32:53] Hey, so this video, I just want to say I was having to see black people in the video, y'all.
[00:32:57] I was like, oh, what's that?
[00:32:58] Okay.
[00:32:58] We getting in there.
[00:33:00] Because, you know, it's interesting to have K-pop to have so many influences from R&B music, but then like fly everybody else in or fly to everywhere else where we are not.
[00:33:11] But, you know, so it's nice to see it.
[00:33:14] That and Honey, they were, everyone was looking very good together.
[00:33:18] It was giving.
[00:33:19] I was very excited.
[00:33:21] Everyone was sitting there grooving and shaking and moving and the girls were grooving and shaking and moving.
[00:33:25] So the energy all matched.
[00:33:27] It just felt so like, you know how New Jeans has like this unisex tomboy groove, almost like anyone can do this choreography.
[00:33:36] For the girls of Kiss of Life, they have that kind of going on where it's like their moves, even though it's very much choreographed, it feels like, you know how the movies try to make it seem like they're out of like a choreographed party scene.
[00:33:49] That's what it feels like.
[00:33:50] If it's a really good, well choreographed party scene, it feels like, oh my gosh, it was seamless.
[00:33:55] It was, oh my God, I want to be a part of that.
[00:33:57] And they have that going on with them, especially here in the video.
[00:34:00] And you can see it.
[00:34:02] It's giving outrageous finally released music video with those street scenes.
[00:34:08] The purse, the video.
[00:34:09] I know, I know.
[00:34:10] But the finally, like the releasing, they're like, listen, we couldn't release this, but y'all can film on this street.
[00:34:16] Like, you know, they have like the same angle of like the avenue in front of the building.
[00:34:20] So it reminded me of outrageous in that sense where it was like the wet pavement and they're dancing on it, wearing their street clothes and shaking butt.
[00:34:27] So again, they're kind of leaning toward that 2000s.
[00:34:29] There's a little bit of like fantasy in the video where you have, I guess, Nathie in this little weird like Oren Ishi moment in a restaurant.
[00:34:39] Yeah.
[00:34:39] You have like a shaker with confetti in it.
[00:34:42] So a lot of the effects kind of are very like fantastic where they're blending into each other and like hyper realistic without being like super Alice in Wonderland.
[00:34:52] Like at one point, I think Julie reaches her hand and it ends up in Nathie's scene.
[00:34:56] And then I think Hanul or her member is shaking the little green shaker in his confetti for someone else's scene.
[00:35:03] So again, they're doing a nice little seamless like edit.
[00:35:06] Shout out to the video colorist.
[00:35:08] They're doing such an amazing job.
[00:35:09] Like the fantasy scene with I think it was Hanul who was singing, who had her wings.
[00:35:14] It comes around like one time, but it fits because of what's going on in the pre-hook and like how she's singing, what she's singing about.
[00:35:21] Um, I do like that they do call back to the subway because the subway for them was like their debut video like, um, imagery.
[00:35:29] They were always on this like fringy little subway, but now the subway is like covered in confetti and people are singing their songs.
[00:35:34] And it kind of has a little bit more of a symbolic meaning to it.
[00:35:37] So it's like people are getting loud with them.
[00:35:38] People are getting on board with them.
[00:35:40] Um, so I think I like this one in terms of how they look and what they're giving me in terms of energy.
[00:35:45] But I can't say I want to go back and go, oh my God, I need to see that again.
[00:35:51] Like there was a moment in this video that made me go, girl, run that back, run that back.
[00:35:55] I will say that my favorite dance scene, um, is not actually the street scene, but the one with the get loud where everyone is like, uh, dancing on that like reddish kind of floor that get loud background.
[00:36:05] That one I like, um, not as not the street scene, which is kind of surprising.
[00:36:10] It's like, I gave it so much praise, but yeah, I think the video is decent for what it is.
[00:36:15] It ate everybody up when it came out.
[00:36:17] That video is freaking gorgeous.
[00:36:18] So they kind of have to live up to that for me, but the video is okay.
[00:36:23] Yeah.
[00:36:24] You know?
[00:36:25] Yeah.
[00:36:26] I also basically just said it's okay.
[00:36:28] I also kind of that, I don't know, it's also felt a little disjointed.
[00:36:33] I liked actually all the street scenes and the subway kind of plays into that.
[00:36:37] It is kind of the restaurant scene and some of the studio kind of solo shots and stuff that I felt were just a bit unnecessary.
[00:36:44] I think because you only see them for like two seconds, three seconds.
[00:36:48] Right.
[00:36:48] And it's not like the music changes a lot.
[00:36:51] So it's not like it's representing anything there.
[00:36:53] I don't know.
[00:36:54] I just didn't fully understand the full concept of everything.
[00:36:57] And also I think this song, there's a relaxed vibe to it.
[00:37:03] It's the type of song that you can do kind of like a lot of grooves to that you can kind of just like sit in your hips a bit more.
[00:37:09] And you don't need to try too hard, I think.
[00:37:12] But I think in the video they are trying too hard.
[00:37:15] Like it's just, it's always just going at a hundred with everything and it's not, they're not like sitting into it and just kind of vibing with it.
[00:37:22] And I think that's what the song needed.
[00:37:24] And I think that's where the disconnect happens for me with this one.
[00:37:28] Yeah.
[00:37:29] Yeah.
[00:37:29] Totally agree with you on that.
[00:37:32] Because, you know, when you think about APOP videos, they can be a lot.
[00:37:37] They can be too much.
[00:37:40] And that's what they're known for.
[00:37:41] But with this particular song, it didn't feel like it needed a lot of those cutaways.
[00:37:48] I watched the performance video, just the performance.
[00:37:52] And I loved just when they were in the street.
[00:37:55] And then when they were in the set where it said, get loud in the background.
[00:37:58] Like those two shots were amazing.
[00:38:01] And then the subway.
[00:38:03] And I think if they would have just kept that being the whole feel and not trying to like, but we're K-pop videos.
[00:38:10] Do we got to do something else?
[00:38:11] Like you didn't need it, babes.
[00:38:14] They didn't need it.
[00:38:16] As for seeing a bunch of people of color, a bunch of black folks, it was really nice seeing a bunch of black folks in the video.
[00:38:25] I love when I get to see that.
[00:38:27] But like sometimes in K-pop videos, black folks can be used as props.
[00:38:34] And I did not feel proppy in this video.
[00:38:38] It felt very much like, no, we're dancing together.
[00:38:42] This is a team.
[00:38:43] Like it just felt very communal.
[00:38:45] And rather than like, we're using this because, well, we feel like we have to?
[00:38:51] The question mark?
[00:38:52] Which sometimes, I don't know.
[00:38:55] Maybe they just roll the dice and go, I guess we got to put some black folks in here.
[00:39:00] But like, you know what I mean?
[00:39:03] Absolutely.
[00:39:04] This particular video, it really felt natural and cute.
[00:39:09] And like Chris, like you said, if they would have just kind of like chilled out a little bit and not been so K-pop, but just like felt with the song.
[00:39:17] It just made a video.
[00:39:19] It would have been 100% for me.
[00:39:22] But right now they're getting an 80% out of 100.
[00:39:27] That's valid.
[00:39:28] So this would have been the moment to actually pay attention to American style videos and actually lean into our aesthetic.
[00:39:34] All that.
[00:39:35] All right.
[00:39:36] Moving right back to our girls of player two.
[00:39:39] Say my name with wave, wave, wave, wave, wave.
[00:39:44] God.
[00:39:44] So for this video, now I described the song, if I could like have like a description for it.
[00:39:53] It was like a summertime vibe that was released in the fall.
[00:39:58] And unfortunately, this video is like the same way.
[00:40:02] It's like several months too late because I'm pretty sure Seoul is like right in the middle of like their autumnal seasons as well.
[00:40:10] So, yeah, I mean, the pull scene, the brightness of it, the colors of it.
[00:40:16] I guess if you want to introduce branding, it makes sense in a way.
[00:40:20] I don't know.
[00:40:21] It's just a little too late for me.
[00:40:23] I don't know what happened in terms of release date or like why they decided to release this now and the way they did with the colors.
[00:40:31] But I get the branding of the cat.
[00:40:35] I think the cat was like slammed onto us in terms of what they did with the cat.
[00:40:41] Yeah, it was like, literally those cat hitting videos.
[00:40:46] That's what happened with this video.
[00:40:48] I think with what they did, Chris and I had mentioned in our last pop off meow, the girl group from Black Label, they could have leaned more into the kind of like silliness of the kitty cat.
[00:41:00] This group did it on 100.
[00:41:02] The director was like, yo, you say less.
[00:41:04] I've got cats as a mascot.
[00:41:06] Say less.
[00:41:07] The cat in the video is a call to their album cover.
[00:41:09] So it's like a gray cat on their album cover, which I think is so cute.
[00:41:12] That cat looks like it's getting ready to start some trouble.
[00:41:15] So I just I just wonder if the the mascot has any tie to their name or if it's like we talked about just for the sake of matching the new jeans marketing.
[00:41:24] Excuse me.
[00:41:24] The video is like a Snapchat Insta snow filter attack.
[00:41:29] I will say that.
[00:41:30] Like, it's just I feel like someone was like, yo, look on snow, look on Snapchat, look on Insta and tell me what's cute, twinkly.
[00:41:36] And let's do that.
[00:41:36] I mean, I like some of the gemstone effects and like some of the effects like the like scrapbook stuff.
[00:41:43] It was kind of cute.
[00:41:43] But again, I think the season just the season has passed for this.
[00:41:47] So it just felt a little like it was already overwhelming, but it just felt just kind of like, I don't know, not stupid.
[00:41:54] I don't know.
[00:41:54] I had to find a better word than stupid, but it just wasn't it wasn't good.
[00:41:58] It wasn't good.
[00:41:59] Um, I had the giant cat paws as a POV.
[00:42:03] I feel like they should have just used that to kind of introduce a girl like almost like a cat kind of following around.
[00:42:08] No, it would have been creepy.
[00:42:09] Okay.
[00:42:09] I don't know how to make it like not creepy because it was a giant cat.
[00:42:12] All right.
[00:42:12] So I'm trying to make it make sense.
[00:42:14] But a lot of it was filter.
[00:42:16] A lot of it was like them cute dancing scenes.
[00:42:19] And then there was a giant ginger cat, which may know to their branding because you've already shown me all these gray cats, gray mascot cat, gray animated cat, gray.
[00:42:29] And now suddenly there's a giant orange cat behind them just perching.
[00:42:34] I don't get that because now you've already introduced me to this kind of thing and is not cohesive.
[00:42:39] So, you know, I'm picking a little bit.
[00:42:42] But again, the branding is thrown in my face to like, it's a gray cat.
[00:42:45] It's a gray cat.
[00:42:45] It's a gray cat.
[00:42:46] Kitty, kitty, kitty, kitty.
[00:42:47] And then there's a random Garfield.
[00:42:48] You feel me?
[00:42:49] Like, so, I mean, I mean, all the animated cats were different colors, though.
[00:42:53] So I don't think there's a color attached to their cat.
[00:42:56] Yes, there is on their album.
[00:42:57] The cat is gray.
[00:42:58] It has like white paws.
[00:43:00] It's so cute.
[00:43:01] I mean, aside from like little nitpicky things like that, you're right.
[00:43:04] The cats were all different colors.
[00:43:05] The girls looked cute.
[00:43:08] They look cute, but not like baby cute.
[00:43:12] You know what I'm saying?
[00:43:13] And with the little cat paws thing that can be seen as like kind of like juvenile.
[00:43:16] But they did a good job of not making it so like, oh, my God, eggios.
[00:43:21] I appreciate that.
[00:43:22] But like this video again, I don't know, man.
[00:43:26] And the brand, I don't know.
[00:43:27] Like, what are you trying to do with the video?
[00:43:29] I just didn't understand what the main goal was.
[00:43:31] I mean, I think it's memorable because of all the ways they used cats.
[00:43:36] So I think I'm actually okay with that because right now, since I don't really know anything
[00:43:40] about them, but what I do know about them is the cat thing.
[00:43:44] Yeah.
[00:43:45] You know, like that's literally the only thing.
[00:43:47] So yes, they are really like dashing our head with it.
[00:43:51] Yeah.
[00:43:51] But you know, it's her debut single.
[00:43:53] It's a very saturated market.
[00:43:55] I think that's actually okay in this case.
[00:43:58] And I think the way they use the cats were pretty cute overall.
[00:44:03] Yes.
[00:44:03] And I did like the little kind of stickers and kind of all the added like filtery stuff.
[00:44:08] I think it worked.
[00:44:09] Like you can tell they're kind of high school age or, you know, so I don't know.
[00:44:15] I think it all worked for the song.
[00:44:17] Yeah.
[00:44:18] But again, same with the song.
[00:44:20] There's just not much replay value here.
[00:44:22] There's just nothing about it that really captures my attention.
[00:44:25] There wasn't one specific scene that really like made me, ooh, like that's cool.
[00:44:30] You know, at least with the Meowth one, they had, you know, when they were all on the giant
[00:44:36] cat, like that was cool.
[00:44:37] Yeah.
[00:44:37] Yeah.
[00:44:38] You know, you know, like the cat chisees with the little, the cat like.
[00:44:42] Oh, it's fine.
[00:44:44] I mean, to be fair, I'm also just like not, I'm not the target audience for this because
[00:44:50] I'm just not that into these super juvenile girl groups.
[00:44:54] Yeah.
[00:44:54] That's valid.
[00:44:54] Also just isn't for me.
[00:44:56] No, that's super valid though.
[00:44:57] Okay.
[00:44:58] Go on.
[00:44:58] Yeah.
[00:44:59] That makes so much sense.
[00:45:00] And like, just looking at their ages, cause I wrote down their, their years.
[00:45:05] 2010 is the Monday.
[00:45:07] Oh my gosh.
[00:45:09] You know what I was doing in 2010?
[00:45:11] I can't remember when I was doing it.
[00:45:14] Seriously.
[00:45:15] Oh my God.
[00:45:16] God.
[00:45:16] The oldest to Toby is 2001.
[00:45:18] So they're all like, for me, the video made sense with all the stickers and the filters.
[00:45:23] Um, I would have totally taken the pool scenes out because again, that made sense.
[00:45:28] Like, why are we in the pool?
[00:45:30] This is not summertime.
[00:45:31] It doesn't make sense.
[00:45:32] But like the cats, that's what got me.
[00:45:35] I love the cats.
[00:45:37] Like I wanted more cats.
[00:45:39] I'm like, if y'all are going to do cats, I need big cats, little cats, small cats, tiny
[00:45:44] cats, cats of all colors.
[00:45:46] Give me a rainbow cat.
[00:45:47] Like, like you could have taken out the scene where they're just sitting being pretty on
[00:45:52] the bus.
[00:45:52] Like give me that and just give me them rolling around with cats, put them in little cat outfits,
[00:45:58] wear the cat size tee.
[00:46:00] That was incredible to me.
[00:46:02] I'm like, have them holding up a cat motel with little cat guns.
[00:46:07] Oh my gosh.
[00:46:08] Yeah.
[00:46:09] See, that's the concept.
[00:46:11] That's what I'm talking about.
[00:46:12] They need to, if this is where they're going to go, I would love for them to like flow into
[00:46:17] this cat thing.
[00:46:18] Because when, when I saw them, like they did play juvenile to me, but they are young,
[00:46:23] but also it was not so agio to where it was like, what are you doing?
[00:46:30] No, it was just cute enough for where you're like, oh, these are some really adorable girls
[00:46:35] and they just, they just love cats and hanging out.
[00:46:39] Hanging out.
[00:46:41] Yeah.
[00:46:42] That's not what I'm super about.
[00:46:43] So yes, the adorable strangeness that is say my name.
[00:46:47] So strange.
[00:46:49] So strange.
[00:46:50] I would give it a 70 out of a hundred.
[00:46:54] Okay.
[00:46:54] That's valid.
[00:46:56] Okay.
[00:46:57] That brings us to the last video, which is whiplash.
[00:47:01] Um, you know, they have come, that snap is hilarious.
[00:47:05] They have come so far from black mambas, um, meow wolf, cyberspace, hyper colorful unicorn
[00:47:13] puke colors.
[00:47:15] Um, look, don't get me wrong.
[00:47:16] I loved it.
[00:47:17] I love the warrior ice skating princess thing.
[00:47:20] I'm here for it, but it's good to grow and develop and still maintain your visual identity.
[00:47:29] And this song does that.
[00:47:30] So they've gone from all this iridescence to this black, white, silver palette.
[00:47:35] And it's sickening.
[00:47:37] They went from like being sick to like sickening, you know?
[00:47:40] Um, so like there's still this level of like the digital fantasy, but it's more connected
[00:47:44] in the realism.
[00:47:45] So you have like a cycle.
[00:47:47] Oh, y'all know what that is.
[00:47:48] You have cameras, you have all this technology, technology that is practical.
[00:47:52] So it makes everything feel like an augmented reality as opposed to like, we're in, um,
[00:47:57] what's it called?
[00:47:57] We're sink diving into, um, um, what's that world called again?
[00:48:02] Kwangya.
[00:48:03] Kwangya.
[00:48:03] Oh, I hate Kwangya.
[00:48:05] I hate Kwangya.
[00:48:05] No, Kwangya is dead.
[00:48:07] I know.
[00:48:08] But literally I had a beef with Kwangya.
[00:48:09] Every episode we talked about Kwangya, I was like, I hate Kwangya.
[00:48:12] I should make a master cut of that.
[00:48:13] But my point is they have finally exited Kwangya and now it's kind of in the world that we're
[00:48:20] in.
[00:48:21] They're kind of keeping the concept, whoever's directing the video, because whatever this,
[00:48:25] like this, I don't want to call him a Guffin, but this little metal piece or whatever,
[00:48:30] we kept focusing on it, focusing on it.
[00:48:32] It's Ning Ning's heel.
[00:48:33] Giselle's like swipe, takes the heel.
[00:48:36] She's falling down.
[00:48:37] And for Giselle, not Snow, Winter.
[00:48:41] Winter.
[00:48:42] They have kitty cat names, actually.
[00:48:44] The girls, Winter, Karina, Ning Ning, Giselle.
[00:48:47] But yeah, so Winter has the heel that's now configured and it explodes.
[00:48:53] So kind of like, why are we focusing on this?
[00:48:56] So I think it has a level of absurdity as well that works.
[00:49:01] Like, they're so cool and they're so beautiful and they're so editorial and their faces are
[00:49:08] literally dirtying up the frame.
[00:49:09] Like, you have different dimensions of how close someone is or serving you looks.
[00:49:13] But then you have this absurd moment of Giselle snatching Ning Ning's heel off.
[00:49:17] You have Ning Ning laying on the ground with a wine glass.
[00:49:19] It's like, why?
[00:49:22] But then again, why not?
[00:49:23] It's like, it's not what you think it is.
[00:49:26] They're serving looks, but like, what are we looking at?
[00:49:28] And I enjoy that.
[00:49:30] And the dancing wasn't like, look at the dancing, look at the dancing.
[00:49:33] We're focusing on the dancing, except for the chorus part.
[00:49:34] So this video is definitely not like, wow, oh my gosh, so much is going on here.
[00:49:42] Like with the freaking girls video or like their earlier videos.
[00:49:46] But it's still as effective because it's cool.
[00:49:48] It fits the song.
[00:49:49] It's not super extra and they look great.
[00:49:52] Yeah, I love this video.
[00:49:54] I think it's refreshing to see them in something so clean.
[00:49:58] Like, because all their other stuff, it was just so extra with the CGI and then having to fight these monsters.
[00:50:05] And then they have their digital selves as well, which I'm just glad.
[00:50:10] I feel like that's retired now, right?
[00:50:12] Like, please.
[00:50:13] I think so.
[00:50:15] Yeah.
[00:50:16] And so the whole thing just does feel very high fashion, very editorial, very high brow, which is great.
[00:50:21] And it does remind me of Western music videos a bit more, actually, because of the simplicity of it.
[00:50:28] Like, this goes back to kind of what we've been saying, what we were saying earlier about Kiss of Life.
[00:50:32] Like, they didn't need all those extra scenes.
[00:50:34] Like, we literally only have like two or three spots that they're in this whole video.
[00:50:38] Right.
[00:50:39] And it's captivating.
[00:50:41] Like, they used the camera work.
[00:50:43] They used them to keep it interesting.
[00:50:46] And I think that's important.
[00:50:48] And I think their performance is so good because it's all just very stoic.
[00:50:54] And it works for the song.
[00:50:57] So I think it was great.
[00:50:59] There was only one kind of like super heavy CGI moment with that like car explosion.
[00:51:03] Yeah.
[00:51:04] It was a little weird.
[00:51:07] But I think this video was great.
[00:51:09] And it does have replay value because you notice different things in the background as well.
[00:51:13] Yeah.
[00:51:14] Yeah.
[00:51:15] Yeah.
[00:51:16] Definitely.
[00:51:17] Like, I actually enjoyed this video.
[00:51:19] And with Aespa, I don't know if I'm going to enjoy it or not because it's what you don't know what you're going to get.
[00:51:27] But with this, it just felt very mature.
[00:51:30] And it felt like they're on their grown lady shit.
[00:51:33] And they're like ready to show the world like, look, there's a spot for four girls to, you know, kind of do their thing.
[00:51:44] And I feel like this was their moment to put their foot down and say, listen, we can take that spot.
[00:51:50] But I loved how it was so just silver and black and white and how they just like their expressions were like, I don't care.
[00:52:00] I don't, I just, I don't care.
[00:52:04] Yeah.
[00:52:04] Yeah.
[00:52:04] We're not trying hard right now at all.
[00:52:06] Yeah.
[00:52:07] We're not.
[00:52:08] And then how at the end, they're just like dangled the arm dangle like in the different shoes.
[00:52:14] It was the fashion.
[00:52:16] It was so great.
[00:52:17] The wigs were on point.
[00:52:19] Like my girl, I think winter was in that short black wig.
[00:52:23] I was like, what is happening?
[00:52:26] You look amazing.
[00:52:27] Like everybody just had this really great look and they've grown into their faces.
[00:52:32] They've grown into their bodies.
[00:52:33] Like it just really, and not in no shade, but like, you know, they were kids.
[00:52:39] And now like, you know, I'm looking at their ages.
[00:52:41] The oldest are 2000, 2001, 2002.
[00:52:44] Like they are now little, little ladies of early twenties showing us that we're grown people now.
[00:52:53] And I'm, I'm completely here for it.
[00:52:56] Uh-huh.
[00:52:57] Uh-huh.
[00:52:58] Well said.
[00:52:58] I agree with you.
[00:52:59] They grown.
[00:53:00] Shoot.
[00:53:00] They grown.
[00:53:01] This is what happened.
[00:53:01] They grown women.
[00:53:03] Yes.
[00:53:03] This is what happens when you let 20 something year olds do a thing.
[00:53:05] I don't know.
[00:53:06] What?
[00:53:07] So that brings this video round to a close.
[00:53:10] So, although my girls of Kiss of Life are giving me something, they're still not quite there yet.
[00:53:18] So we're going to give it to Whiplash.
[00:53:20] That video is great.
[00:53:21] Yeah.
[00:53:22] I have to give it to Whiplash again as well.
[00:53:24] Sorry.
[00:53:26] Oh, man.
[00:53:27] And it's hard.
[00:53:28] Me opposite of you guys.
[00:53:30] That cat video.
[00:53:33] That's that way, boy.
[00:53:35] I don't know what it was.
[00:53:36] But them cats had really good.
[00:53:39] Shoot.
[00:53:39] Stand on my 10 toes.
[00:53:40] 10 toes.
[00:53:41] I'm going to stand on my 10 toes and I'm going with say my name and them cats.
[00:53:45] Love that.
[00:53:46] Go on.
[00:53:48] All right.
[00:53:49] So moving on to our final round.
[00:53:51] And this is the performance slash choreography round.
[00:53:55] So.
[00:53:57] Round three.
[00:54:00] Kiss of Life.
[00:54:01] I'm going to be honest.
[00:54:02] The Get Loud choreo did not do it for me the first few times that I watched it.
[00:54:07] After watching a few more performances and their later performances, the more recent ones,
[00:54:12] it's grown on me more.
[00:54:15] But I think this goes back to what I was saying about the video and that it just tries a little too hard.
[00:54:21] And my biggest thing with choreography is how well it matches the music.
[00:54:26] Right.
[00:54:26] So.
[00:54:28] There is an overall effortlessness to the song.
[00:54:30] And the way the beat is.
[00:54:34] And it just feels a little too labored, this choreography.
[00:54:38] It's I was trying to actually analyze it a bit more.
[00:54:41] And I was trying to like kind of learn the chorus a little bit.
[00:54:43] It's not a very natural groove.
[00:54:48] Like you actually have to put your body in kind of like weird angles.
[00:54:51] Like for example, that dance where they're like pointing at their head and then doing like the kind of body roll, head dip thing down.
[00:54:58] That's actually a very odd angle to sit in.
[00:55:00] And then they're in some other position right before that.
[00:55:03] So you have to very deliberately kind of move into these pictures.
[00:55:07] And that goes against the song.
[00:55:09] Because for me, this song is all about just like really simple grooves and really being able to kind of sit into things.
[00:55:16] So I just don't think the musicality is fully there for me.
[00:55:20] It's just a little much.
[00:55:23] But then they perform it pretty well.
[00:55:26] Like it feels natural when they perform it like in their facials and stuff.
[00:55:29] Or her.
[00:55:30] I just don't.
[00:55:30] I don't know.
[00:55:31] The choreo doesn't fully hit for me.
[00:55:34] Oh.
[00:55:34] Well, okay.
[00:55:36] And I'm going to go ahead and concur.
[00:55:39] It felt like it was too much.
[00:55:41] Just too much moving for no reason.
[00:55:44] And trying to make tableau where there didn't necessarily need to be like pictures and things.
[00:55:52] It's like, okay, that's a really cool picture that y'all just made.
[00:55:55] But like, why?
[00:55:56] What'd you do that for?
[00:55:57] There was no reason for it.
[00:56:01] Watching their live performance videos, for me, it depended on who their backup dancers were.
[00:56:09] Because sometimes you get some raggedy backup dancers and it just messes up.
[00:56:14] Just came in and worked.
[00:56:15] The rejects get on the stage.
[00:56:18] All right?
[00:56:19] And it just doesn't work.
[00:56:21] But the girls, like they stood out.
[00:56:23] They stood their ground.
[00:56:24] And like you said, it did get better and better as they kept doing the circuit of performances.
[00:56:31] I don't.
[00:56:32] I just.
[00:56:32] I need them to.
[00:56:34] What is it?
[00:56:34] How do you say?
[00:56:35] Lip sync.
[00:56:36] Make your choice.
[00:56:38] Are you going to lip sync or not?
[00:56:40] And I would prefer it if they would just lip sync until and just being fit.
[00:56:47] No, no shade.
[00:56:48] Get till they get their cardio up a little bit.
[00:56:50] Because sometimes you can't hold the note and dance at the same time.
[00:56:55] And there are certain notes.
[00:56:56] Like one of the girls was trying to hit a note and she can't hold it.
[00:57:00] Like this high note while she's dancing.
[00:57:03] And I can hear her go from her trying to sing to like just stopping.
[00:57:09] And now it's just the track.
[00:57:11] And I'm like, baby girl, y'all need to choose better spots.
[00:57:14] So that's my take.
[00:57:15] I get real.
[00:57:16] When it comes to live vocals, that's where I get very, very critique.
[00:57:21] And so there I was like, maybe either make your choose.
[00:57:25] Either like lip sync the whole thing or just go for it.
[00:57:29] Let me hear how.
[00:57:30] Let me hear the bad notes.
[00:57:33] I also blame the choreographer for that, though, because they also don't give them moves with
[00:57:39] the thought of the fact that they have to sing while they're doing them.
[00:57:44] That is completely disconnected in K-pop.
[00:57:46] And I hate that.
[00:57:47] So, yeah, definitely on the same page.
[00:57:49] That's been our beef for a lot.
[00:57:52] I mean, that's where I think American artists have always been like, I guess, lucky because
[00:57:57] the choreographer is like, nah, she got a mic in her hand, dude.
[00:58:00] Like, we can't we can't do that.
[00:58:02] Like, yeah, like even Christine, I was watching her like do the Dirty performance.
[00:58:07] We all know she can sing.
[00:58:08] She danced in the video for Dirty, but she has to sing.
[00:58:10] So she stopped and was like, she did like handography just to kind of match everyone.
[00:58:15] Um, you know, I was trying to look up the choreographer for this dance.
[00:58:19] I just I didn't look hard.
[00:58:20] I'm not gonna lie to you.
[00:58:21] But I.
[00:58:24] So what's sticky last or this past summer, I complained that the moves were also quite
[00:58:31] awkward at certain points.
[00:58:32] Like you don't have to be sitting there popping your back, snapping your tail, tucking and
[00:58:37] ticking and you ain't got to do all that because what you're doing Afro beats for should have
[00:58:41] been more of a Jamaican kind of dance hall rhythm kind of to everything.
[00:58:46] And you weren't giving me that.
[00:58:47] But so with this one, like you were saying, there should have been more groups, but it
[00:58:50] was a lot more snap, snap, sway, sway.
[00:58:52] Tucka, tucka.
[00:58:53] Now for first verse, you want to show off and do your thing.
[00:58:55] Fine.
[00:58:56] Whatever.
[00:58:57] Whatever.
[00:58:58] Okay.
[00:58:58] But after that, it should get smoother.
[00:59:01] It should get cooler.
[00:59:03] And it kind of did it.
[00:59:04] So there was like potential for the jump in and out.
[00:59:06] Like, I'm not sure if they do like a Frankenstein thing where they hire like a Korean team,
[00:59:10] an American team to do it.
[00:59:11] Because when they had like the group moments toward like the ending of the song, even if you
[00:59:15] watch the performance video with the Western dancers, you can see them kind of like act
[00:59:20] like they're at a freaking party.
[00:59:22] That's why I'm saying like, it felt kind of like one of those movies when it's done right.
[00:59:25] It's like, oh shoot, I wish I was there.
[00:59:27] There were moments like that.
[00:59:28] Even when the dancers were kind of dancing, I looked at them like, okay, girl, I see you.
[00:59:32] That's good, girl.
[00:59:34] Obviously the girls are the star of the video.
[00:59:36] But if the dancers are making me feel like, oh my God, I want to learn this is fun.
[00:59:40] The girls are making me feel because the girls are kind of just like bouncing with them.
[00:59:43] But some of them had moments.
[00:59:44] I was like, wow, great.
[00:59:45] So there were potential moments of like good choreography.
[00:59:50] But unfortunately, they just didn't, it didn't stick all of the way.
[00:59:55] I mean, again, it felt organic in certain parts.
[00:59:58] Like they're like cute, like feminine thing feels organic to them.
[01:00:01] It doesn't feel like they're pretending to be these like dancing from the push chicks.
[01:00:05] They're very much like, it gives you hyper femme.
[01:00:08] They gave that to you.
[01:00:09] So unfortunately, what they did with Igloo with all that cool like sex appeal does not translate here.
[01:00:15] I think it was just like, it was okay.
[01:00:19] I did like some of the information where they interlocked or whatever, but it's okay.
[01:00:24] I think what bothers me was the Tatiana like crotch grab with the get loud.
[01:00:29] And they started like, you know, I was like, why are we sitting there bust down Tatiana?
[01:00:33] I'm like, why is that there?
[01:00:36] Moments like that.
[01:00:37] I was just like, it stood out to me, but not for the reason that you think it did.
[01:00:41] You know what I'm saying?
[01:00:42] Get loud.
[01:00:42] There's hands you can do.
[01:00:43] You can go hands up.
[01:00:44] You can, you can, there's so much you can do.
[01:00:46] You can drop into a hair flip.
[01:00:47] You can, you can, there's so many other things you could do other than making it look like it's a freaking choreography class.
[01:00:54] And not an actual girl group dance.
[01:00:57] Like honey, look at Danny Kane.
[01:00:59] Like they could have been an instant, an instant Danny Kane, I guess in terms of like, if you're a K-pop fan, don't really know like older Western group.
[01:01:08] That is what Kiss Life is doing.
[01:01:11] It is what Kiss Life is doing.
[01:01:13] So they should have been, they should have been a lot more smoother with us.
[01:01:17] But yeah, it's all right.
[01:01:18] It is what it does.
[01:01:20] Yeah.
[01:01:22] Well, moving on to Say My Name, Wave Way.
[01:01:25] I think this choreo is very well done.
[01:01:28] Actually, the formations are awesome.
[01:01:31] I love the way it starts them in the line.
[01:01:33] There's just so many dynamics in it and so many cute kind of pictures and stuff that they do.
[01:01:39] They utilize all the members super well.
[01:01:42] And it's actually very intricate.
[01:01:44] There's a lot of handography in there that requires a lot.
[01:01:47] Like, I don't even know how they were doing some of it.
[01:01:49] I was like trying to follow along a little bit and I was like, oh, that's tough.
[01:01:53] And they make it feel very smooth.
[01:01:55] So good on them for sure.
[01:01:57] And I like the whole like cat paw thing.
[01:02:00] It totally works.
[01:02:01] It totally, totally works.
[01:02:03] I will say performance wise, though.
[01:02:05] It is the extreme choreography of the facials that I don't love in K-pop where every single wink, every single facial expression, every single everything is so planned.
[01:02:20] Like I watched a couple of performances and they literally do the exact same thing in every single one.
[01:02:25] So it's like, I can't tell if you're actually having any fun with this.
[01:02:29] Like, it just does feel like you're just watching a robot do this dance.
[01:02:34] And I know that there isn't an aspect of K-pop that is that, that they are not human, that they are this kind of perfect thing.
[01:02:42] So that's just not for me.
[01:02:44] But in terms of the actual choreography, I think it was great.
[01:02:47] It really works with the song.
[01:02:49] Yeah, yeah, totally agree.
[01:02:51] Like there's this one part in the choreo where all the girls kind of bend down and one of the girls walks through.
[01:02:57] And it was like, I don't know what that was, but that was so cool.
[01:03:01] So there were like lots of really interesting moments in that choreo.
[01:03:06] And it's so youthful and like, but not too egg yo, like we were saying earlier, just like we're girls and we like to have fun together and we're friends.
[01:03:16] Like just super, super cute.
[01:03:18] And, and the, the simplicity is because you, Chris, you said like there's so much like intricate stuff and the fact that they made it look easy.
[01:03:28] They didn't make it look like it was so intricate was also very, very impressive.
[01:03:33] Excuse me for, for these young girls.
[01:03:36] Like I enjoyed it and I thought it was very perfect to go along with the song.
[01:03:41] Like that, I feel like the dance was the catchiest part of the song.
[01:03:44] I actually.
[01:03:45] Yeah.
[01:03:46] Yeah.
[01:03:47] No.
[01:03:47] Oh, shoot.
[01:03:48] Yeah.
[01:03:48] Oh, well.
[01:03:49] This is an example of an effective choreography for the chorus.
[01:03:54] It fit the music as well.
[01:03:56] I think the formations are definitely the, my favorite of all three.
[01:04:02] I'm going to say that like in advance now because they don't have background dancers.
[01:04:05] It's just the X amount of them.
[01:04:08] And the formations are really clever.
[01:04:11] Like you mentioned the Tulane thing, the kitty hands and the waving choreography is really cute because again, it goes back to what I was saying about that.
[01:04:18] Double play of the waves.
[01:04:19] And also like the water waves.
[01:04:20] And then when they do the B part of the chorus, they actually get into some like hip hop grooves.
[01:04:27] And I'm like, yes, thank you.
[01:04:29] This makes sense.
[01:04:29] This is how you, this is musicality.
[01:04:31] This is musicality.
[01:04:33] So I mean, ah, man, watching the performances.
[01:04:36] Yeah.
[01:04:37] It was rehearsed.
[01:04:37] I think at this point, after we saw Ive with Eleven with their facial, we kind of just got over it at that point.
[01:04:44] They did such a good job that when they kept doing it, it was like, okay, we get it.
[01:04:47] Stop.
[01:04:48] But like, but when we first saw it, we were like, yeah, yes.
[01:04:51] Oh my God, it's giving.
[01:04:52] Dang.
[01:04:53] So now there's a little less of an organic thing, but I mean, for what they're given, they're, they're, they are employees.
[01:05:01] They would do if you would do it for a check too.
[01:05:03] So I guess they're doing it like that.
[01:05:05] They do it.
[01:05:06] Yeah.
[01:05:07] I was an employee, you know, um, but all, all jokes aside though, I think my favorite thing about their whole concept is that they're going for a school girl concept.
[01:05:16] It goes with the words.
[01:05:17] It goes with the song goes with the tone, but it's not like this super cute, like almost jailbait thing.
[01:05:23] And it's not like sexy school girl.
[01:05:24] There is a charm to what they're doing.
[01:05:26] The choreography also reflects that.
[01:05:28] It's not like they're jumping with their, their fists bent and they're shaking and wiggling.
[01:05:33] You know what I'm talking about, right?
[01:05:35] Yeah.
[01:05:35] Yeah.
[01:05:36] And you're like, Oh no, God dang it.
[01:05:38] What am I watching?
[01:05:39] It felt like I was just watching a bunch of girls on a day.
[01:05:41] Like this is what I would choreograph for my dance team for that, that weird little age range of like a 12 year old to that 18 year old, which I do have.
[01:05:49] So it's like, how do you find that balance?
[01:05:50] And this choreography does, it's charming.
[01:05:53] Um, and yeah, I just, the shout out to the bridge formation and choreography section all the way to the end of that song.
[01:05:59] I sat there and watched it over and over again because the way they utilize those girls as like, like sound waves for that freaking production in the bridge.
[01:06:07] I was like, Holy crap.
[01:06:08] Oh my gosh.
[01:06:09] You know, the, the hands bubble popping and the, yeah.
[01:06:11] Yeah.
[01:06:12] Yeah.
[01:06:12] I was like, Holy crap.
[01:06:14] I love it.
[01:06:15] It wasn't too, but they weren't like freaking tutting.
[01:06:17] They were using their bodies.
[01:06:18] They're bouncing, bro.
[01:06:20] I was like, this is great.
[01:06:21] And so I, again, shout out to, I think it's nine and Kina.
[01:06:25] These are the only names I found.
[01:06:26] Okay.
[01:06:27] Nice.
[01:06:27] I don't know who they are, but go off y'all.
[01:06:29] Go off.
[01:06:29] Nice.
[01:06:31] And just to interject on, uh, the facial expressions thing, because I'm a stickler for a dancer that's going to give face, especially when there's been a generation of like these K-pop groups that are just like.
[01:06:43] Oh my God.
[01:06:45] Face and nothing.
[01:06:46] But then you get the, now it's like, do too much.
[01:06:49] We're doing too much.
[01:06:50] And it's like, I need your facials to come from an organic place.
[01:06:55] Like, because you're here, you're in the moment, you're, you're performing a song.
[01:06:59] You're getting this chance to live your dream.
[01:07:02] You're an idol.
[01:07:03] Like, give me the face you want to give me because you're having a good time.
[01:07:07] Not the weight that they paint you.
[01:07:11] I mean, I actually think Kiss of Life is great.
[01:07:14] If you watch a couple of their performances, they are very organic and they do actually, you do feel like they're having fun with it.
[01:07:20] Yes.
[01:07:20] Even if they aren't.
[01:07:21] But they feel like, you feel like they are.
[01:07:23] Yes.
[01:07:24] So.
[01:07:24] Yes.
[01:07:24] And like at the end, they were like cutting like, eh.
[01:07:27] Eh.
[01:07:28] Like that was really cute.
[01:07:29] Yeah.
[01:07:29] They like their song.
[01:07:30] They like their songs for sure.
[01:07:32] Um, moving on to the last, the contestant, which is Whiplash.
[01:07:37] All right.
[01:07:39] It's so clean.
[01:07:40] It's so clean.
[01:07:41] I, I very much appreciated how minimal it was and it probably doesn't help that I watched
[01:07:45] it right after these last two as well.
[01:07:50] But there is beauty in simplicity and this is just such a good example of that.
[01:07:56] Like, I don't think a lot of people who, who don't dance too much really realize it, but
[01:08:01] it's actually this type of choreography that's actually harder sometimes than the really kind
[01:08:07] of craziness that a lot of K-pop is right now.
[01:08:10] Because if one person's angle is slightly off, like if everyone's facing 45, but one person's
[01:08:16] at 60, it's really obvious.
[01:08:18] Right.
[01:08:19] Or if one person's shoulder moves more than someone else's or is slightly off, it's really
[01:08:25] obvious.
[01:08:25] So this was actually very impressive because I could just, I just imagined myself as a choreographer
[01:08:32] trying to get all four of them to match completely.
[01:08:35] And that's, that's usually the most annoying part about dance rehearsals actually is it's
[01:08:39] what we call the cleaning process.
[01:08:40] Um, so just major respect for that.
[01:08:44] Also, I think this choreo, it just works with the song.
[01:08:48] It's super effective.
[01:09:01] Um, I, I, as a dancer, I really respect this choreography.
[01:09:11] I think it was really, really well done.
[01:09:14] And as a non-dancer that just likes watching people dance, um, I enjoyed it a lot.
[01:09:21] It's that simplicity that you're talking about.
[01:09:23] It's not simple at all.
[01:09:24] What they did, like there were parts where they would, one of them melted all the way
[01:09:28] down to the ground and they were like stacked up on top of each other and then got back up
[01:09:33] all fast.
[01:09:34] And I mean, it's just really, really well done.
[01:09:38] And, um, I happened to watch the relay that they did.
[01:09:42] Cause I love a good relay.
[01:09:44] I'm old school that way.
[01:09:45] And I was watching them to see if they were having fun.
[01:09:48] I was what, cause that's where you get to kind of let loose and be silly.
[01:09:52] And they didn't really let loose as much as I wanted them to, but like to see how precise
[01:09:58] and beautiful the movements were on each individual girl without like the whole group or without
[01:10:04] the backup dancers is really, really cool.
[01:10:07] Like you really got to see how, like, I mean, these girls are dancing, like with a capital
[01:10:13] I N G at the end.
[01:10:15] And again, I'm going to go back to that part at the end where they all just collapse with
[01:10:20] the arms, just shake it at the end.
[01:10:23] I mean, how hard yet easy is that move to do?
[01:10:27] It's it to look cool.
[01:10:29] It's not like sloppy.
[01:10:31] I mean, they, they, they did that.
[01:10:34] They whiplashed me.
[01:10:35] They, they lashed my whip.
[01:10:37] See, they lashed my whip.
[01:10:39] They lashed the whip.
[01:10:40] Oh man.
[01:10:41] You know, I think this broken neck dance is great.
[01:10:44] The bro, my neck.
[01:10:45] I love that.
[01:10:47] Who, I have been in a, I have gotten whiplash.
[01:10:50] My friend.
[01:10:51] Oh God.
[01:10:52] And I was like, shoot.
[01:10:53] Oh, hello.
[01:10:55] This is the most obvious thing.
[01:10:57] I love corniography.
[01:10:57] When you're like, so obviously like this is whiplash.
[01:11:00] Like who hasn't grabbed their neck when it hurt this right here.
[01:11:03] Love that.
[01:11:04] The double take thing.
[01:11:05] That is what they mean, obviously by the whiplash, but like both.
[01:11:09] Loved it.
[01:11:11] So I think in terms of like the cleverness, I always love, I say corniography, but cleverography,
[01:11:16] whatever.
[01:11:17] Same thing with the, say my name.
[01:11:19] It's clever.
[01:11:20] There's moments where I'm like, oh my God, I wish I did that.
[01:11:22] So yeah, I think this choreography has a good mix of the posing and some tutting formations
[01:11:28] and the flowing.
[01:11:29] It is so difficult to milk.
[01:11:32] And for people who don't know what milk is, if you hit like a mark at the top and then
[01:11:35] you kind of melt down and kind of have a flow, people don't realize there's so many pockets.
[01:11:40] Like you as a songwriter, me as a singer, Chris as a dancer, does all the other stuff that
[01:11:45] he does.
[01:11:46] But we all understand that there is a, there is a point from A to B obviously, but there's
[01:11:50] so much time in between A and B that we need to fit either with like malismic singing
[01:11:55] and some trills and some runs or with just one E and a two E and a three and a snap.
[01:11:59] And they all do it so nicely.
[01:12:01] Like you said, the relay dance, they have to move their hair.
[01:12:04] They have to make sure that everything is so like, I mean, it's SM is supposed to be like
[01:12:09] that, but it's not easy to move all that weave.
[01:12:12] Karina's hair is chopped.
[01:12:14] Let's be real here.
[01:12:15] It's it's, she's got a bob right now is chopped.
[01:12:18] But when she gets that weave in her hair, you can't tell her nothing.
[01:12:22] Hairography is so hard.
[01:12:23] I teach heels and having to tell a girl who has straight hair to lift her chin so that it
[01:12:27] doesn't go in her face and for all them to be together is so great.
[01:12:31] The synchronicity is what really makes this dance.
[01:12:36] So like sick, nothing about it's difficult.
[01:12:39] They're putting hands, they're doing, you know, hip hop grooves.
[01:12:42] They're doing chest pops that some of them are a little awkward.
[01:12:45] I'm not gonna lie, but they're together.
[01:12:48] And again, as a fan of them, I'm not like I've listened to the albums and I can't say
[01:12:54] that this album is like my favorite of them, even for all the groups we've reviewed, the
[01:12:56] albums are not that great.
[01:12:58] But every time they do like a single release or whatever, sometimes the choreography not
[01:13:03] together.
[01:13:03] Sometimes they feel like they're disjointed, like with freaking girls or like I felt one
[01:13:07] of the dances like it was Frankenstein so badly that the dance just look really sloppy.
[01:13:12] This is the most together they've been like in the past several releases.
[01:13:16] Giselle is not pushed off in the corner somewhere getting hidden.
[01:13:20] I don't know what's happened from like six months ago to now, like whatever a year
[01:13:25] ago from now, but good.
[01:13:26] They look like an actual group now and not like, so you're here.
[01:13:31] You're all here.
[01:13:32] Welcome to the meeting.
[01:13:34] Did you get my last like slack freaking ping?
[01:13:36] Like it feels like they were all at the meeting.
[01:13:38] They were all there.
[01:13:39] They were all, they all clocked in for work.
[01:13:41] So shout out to them.
[01:13:43] Shout out to the choreographer.
[01:13:44] Yeah, this one's, this one's good.
[01:13:46] I like the fun.
[01:13:48] Okay.
[01:13:49] So to choose a winner.
[01:13:51] Yeah.
[01:13:51] I have to give it to Whiplash.
[01:13:53] I do.
[01:13:54] They win all three for me this time.
[01:13:56] Yeah.
[01:13:57] Straight up Whiplash.
[01:13:58] That choreo is everything.
[01:14:00] I got to give it to Whiplash.
[01:14:03] Yeah.
[01:14:03] I'm going to go Whiplash too.
[01:14:05] You know, time, time, time.
[01:14:07] Pressure makes diamonds.
[01:14:08] Yo, they did.
[01:14:08] They had time to add all this perfected.
[01:14:11] So shoot, it shows.
[01:14:13] It really does.
[01:14:14] I mean, I saw them live when they first debuted maybe three years ago in LA.
[01:14:21] And I was like, who are these children?
[01:14:24] And why are they, these children with no faces just dancing on the stage?
[01:14:29] Like they had, there was nothing.
[01:14:31] And so for me to see them now and see this like growth and progress is, it's very beautiful.
[01:14:39] Like, I think that's, that's the beauty of K-pop is like we watch these kids grow up right in front of our faces.
[01:14:45] We watch them find themselves.
[01:14:47] We watch them figure out what they even want to do with their lives.
[01:14:51] Like, are they sure they want to do this?
[01:14:52] Well, you're doing it now.
[01:14:56] And it's really cool.
[01:14:57] And I know I can be harsh because like I'm a, I'm a stickler and I, and I, and I know excellence.
[01:15:04] I mean, listen.
[01:15:05] Yeah.
[01:15:06] One time Sonya undone.
[01:15:08] And I'm not even going to, I'm a big BTS and they weren't even my firsts, but like they weren't even my first loves.
[01:15:14] But I'm going to go on ahead and say like, when you see the excellence of people like them and Red Velvet and now these new kids, it's like, all right, you see what you got to look up to.
[01:15:24] Let's bring it on.
[01:15:26] But I've also realized they got to grow because they're still baby.
[01:15:30] So it's, it's, it's weird.
[01:15:31] Like, you know, double, double edged sword.
[01:15:34] For sure.
[01:15:35] For sure.
[01:15:36] Um, you know, I think that's a lot of people.
[01:15:38] I think overall, we've all kind of unanimous, unanimously decided that what was kind of took.
[01:15:44] I know for me, it did take it.
[01:15:46] But for the other groups, I think, um, it is a testament to your readings, first of all.
[01:15:53] What we've been all been saying throughout, if it's a huge testament to your readings.
[01:15:57] Um, but it's, it's, it's interesting to kind of see all of the difference.
[01:16:04] And, and like, one's in the middle of their career, like, Kiss of Life's not in the middle, but like, they kind of, they had a year and some change now.
[01:16:10] One who just started and the other group has had a long time to figure out what to do with their bodies and their faces.
[01:16:16] Right?
[01:16:16] So, um, it was a little mildly unbalanced.
[01:16:20] But I think at this point, K-pop is at such a high standard that it's like, you got to come correct at, at all times.
[01:16:25] Not unfortunately, but maybe a little bit of fortunately and unfortunately for both.
[01:16:30] Fortunately and unfortunately.
[01:16:31] Fortunately and unfortunately.
[01:16:33] Yeah.
[01:16:33] Yeah.
[01:16:34] So it's like, there's pressure, but also like, there's something to aspire to.
[01:16:38] Um, but yeah, I feel like, uh, Espa's probably the strongest choice.
[01:16:42] Um, just because their team was not playing around.
[01:16:46] The song is not like, wow, their best song.
[01:16:49] Like Armageddon is probably one of my favorite.
[01:16:50] Cause you put Armageddon, Armageddon.
[01:16:52] Like the wordplay on that.
[01:16:53] I love Supernova.
[01:16:53] That whole era.
[01:16:55] I refuse to let go of.
[01:16:56] Cause I listened to the album too.
[01:16:58] And I was like, damn it, the album's good.
[01:16:58] The album was, that album was way better than what we got this time around.
[01:17:02] I'm telling you right.
[01:17:02] I listened to all their albums.
[01:17:04] But in terms of what it is, the song is the better song.
[01:17:09] The video is the better video.
[01:17:10] The choreography is the better choreography.
[01:17:13] So I am really curious what Say My Name is going to do.
[01:17:16] Yes.
[01:17:17] There's only so like, like I said earlier, they have all this hype because of Zhejiang mainly.
[01:17:24] And that's not going to last.
[01:17:25] Like, you know.
[01:17:27] And so this is perfect timing.
[01:17:29] Cause what's next?
[01:17:31] Is that what you're reading?
[01:17:32] That's what I'm reading.
[01:17:33] Like when you brought up Say My Name.
[01:17:35] Yeah.
[01:17:35] So Page of Pentacles comes out.
[01:17:37] This is the kid of the deck.
[01:17:41] Like this is the child.
[01:17:42] So they really are like, they're babies.
[01:17:44] And that's what the cards are saying.
[01:17:47] But also King of Cups.
[01:17:48] I think this is representative of the guys.
[01:17:50] Who's that guy y'all keep saying?
[01:17:52] Seijong?
[01:17:52] Um, Zhejiang.
[01:17:56] Zhejiang.
[01:17:57] Zhejiang.
[01:17:57] Zhejiang.
[01:17:58] Zhejiang.
[01:17:59] Who else is?
[01:17:59] Zhejiang.
[01:18:01] Zhejiang.
[01:18:03] Like, not King Zhejiang.
[01:18:06] You know, the guy that created Korean language.
[01:18:09] Korean language.
[01:18:10] Zhejiang.
[01:18:12] I think this card is representing him.
[01:18:14] And like, just him realizing his dreams post the, his, and being an idol.
[01:18:20] And I feel like he's, he's going to get it.
[01:18:23] Like, they don't, it feels like this is a good, a good team together.
[01:18:27] And they're going to grow together very well.
[01:18:30] Oh.
[01:18:31] Oh, love that.
[01:18:32] And how about, and interesting with Kits of Life, you read earlier that, you know, there's, they're kind of still like finding themselves.
[01:18:39] Right.
[01:18:40] So I don't, I don't think this song did too well commercially.
[01:18:44] So what are you seeing for them?
[01:18:46] Let me see.
[01:18:47] All right.
[01:18:48] Um, the star card.
[01:18:51] So, you know, they, they're very special girls.
[01:18:54] They, they just still need a little time.
[01:18:57] It just feels like, you see how she's staring up and looking at her dreams.
[01:19:00] They're still in that twinkle, twinkle little star.
[01:19:03] I'm making a wish type energy.
[01:19:05] Like, they're still trying to figure it out.
[01:19:07] But like, with this guy, this page of wands, as long as they continue to just keep being free, being themselves,
[01:19:14] being allowed to just grow and not be stifled.
[01:19:19] Like, they, they could have a really good run.
[01:19:22] Yeah.
[01:19:23] Um, that, that's what I'm feeling.
[01:19:25] Like, they just have to find the balance within themselves, really.
[01:19:30] And, uh, yeah, that Gemini, Gemini situation.
[01:19:33] They got, got to get those girls under control.
[01:19:36] Absolutely.
[01:19:37] Like, they, they feel, their energy feels a little, a little crazy.
[01:19:41] Yeah.
[01:19:42] They're like, a little, a little wild.
[01:19:44] So as long as they can continue to find their balance and just like, stay true to themselves,
[01:19:49] stay true to the dream, they'll, they'll get to where they're supposed to go.
[01:19:53] Whatever that means.
[01:19:54] Hmm.
[01:19:55] Awesome.
[01:19:56] So we have Aespa who is now also going on tour.
[01:19:59] So Aespa has their, what, sync dive tour?
[01:20:00] I'm not mistaken.
[01:20:01] Sync live or something?
[01:20:02] Yeah.
[01:20:02] So I've seen them before at, um, I've seen them before at Governor's Ball.
[01:20:07] So obviously they are the, the, the, the, the seasoned vets.
[01:20:13] Right.
[01:20:13] And we've had the reading of them.
[01:20:15] Like, what was a previous reading that they were like, they're on the right path, but then
[01:20:20] you're still like, kind of just like, they still have more to grow or what was the reading?
[01:20:25] And I think, you know what?
[01:20:26] I forgot.
[01:20:27] Cause it already happened.
[01:20:28] It was, no, that was, that was more kiss of life.
[01:20:31] What I believe what you read for Aespa was actually that they're kind of, they've kind
[01:20:35] of found themselves now.
[01:20:36] Yeah.
[01:20:37] Yeah.
[01:20:37] They're in their, their groove.
[01:20:39] Like they're in where they're supposed to be.
[01:20:41] And I feel like they're in the sun was shining on them, which is the sun is coming out for
[01:20:45] them again, but it's like, they're finding their spot and this, it feels like they're at
[01:20:50] a new beginning.
[01:20:50] This Ace of Swords is all about like new beginnings and starting, especially like up here.
[01:20:56] And I feel like their, their maturity in their minds and the maturity of their spirit is what's
[01:21:01] going to just continue to take them upwards.
[01:21:03] You see how the stairs are going up, up, up, up.
[01:21:06] They just have a, they have a really good trajectory and they can fill, they have the
[01:21:10] possibility to fill that spot that is wide open for somebody to be that girl.
[01:21:19] Yeah.
[01:21:19] Yeah.
[01:21:20] Blackpink is not Blackpink in right now.
[01:21:21] So yeah, that's interesting.
[01:21:23] Yeah.
[01:21:24] It's interesting also because SM like as a company is, it seems to be going through some
[01:21:28] turmoil right now, but then at the same time, Aespa is kind of finding their groove.
[01:21:32] So it'll be interesting to see kind of that dynamic as well.
[01:21:36] And Aespa, it's interesting for me because SM is known for vocals and Aespa is more rapper,
[01:21:43] more toxic, more fun, like kind of t-t-t-t-t-t-t, which like I re I really like, but I'm
[01:21:48] like, yo, I need SM to figure their lives out and get us some vocalists again because Bae
[01:21:54] Hyun, Su Ho, but don't play, Chin, don't play with me.
[01:22:00] Yes, I'm just naming XO members Taemin.
[01:22:03] Yes.
[01:22:05] I'm just naming XO members Taemin.
[01:22:06] She said, and?
[01:22:07] Yeah.
[01:22:08] Say something.
[01:22:09] Rye.
[01:22:10] Rye.
[01:22:10] Rye.
[01:22:11] But when you say vocalists, if I'm naming a vocalist and his name isn't Bae Hyun and I
