00:00:59 --> 00:01:28 Yeah. Okay, so Olivia Dean. She is an English singer-songwriter with two albums and several EPs to her name, and her debut album, Messy, which was released in 2023, utilized Soul and Neo-Soul as its base, and critics cited her vocal timbre and lyricism as definitive highlights of her discography. Her second album, The Art of Loving, was released September 26, 2025, and it debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart,
00:01:28 --> 00:01:35 and an art gallery inspired by bell hooks book all about love and the novel itself motivated the album title and concept.
00:01:36 --> 00:02:04 And much like the book, this album explores the concept of love being an undefinable skill that you can cultivate and explores different forms of the emotion, including platonic, romantic, and every love in between. And The Art of Loving is sonically inspired by Aretha Franklin, Caroline King, and the Motown sound. So now we will discuss the production, vocal, visuals, performances, and then drop our individual ratings for each song. But viewer discretion is advised. Your fave will be criticized.
00:02:05 --> 00:02:30 Ooh. Okay. Before we get into the album, let's talk about this album cover. Yeah. What do you think of this kind of, how do you describe this? I don't know. I guess like caught in motion, candid camera moment. Yeah. It's giving, it's giving a selfie you kind of accidentally took on your camera, you know, or like just a blurry one, you know, and you're moving your hand too fast or something. So yeah, it feels very intimate in that way, which I like.
00:02:30 --> 00:02:57 Oh, yeah, that makes sense. Her album, Messy, utilizes that same kind of like motion captured. I don't want to say motion captured because motion captured is different than what I'm talking about right now. Just the blurriness of it. Like, you know, shaking the camera and taking the picture. It might be a filter. It might be a filter. It might be, yes. What do you think of the black and white? Because that kind of, it's in some of the visuals. It's in a lot of the single covers as well.
00:02:57 --> 00:03:25 Oh, yeah, I think that's a timelessness thing, you know? Because if you think about black and whites, you think of just classic. So I feel like this album sought out to have classic elements. And love is a timeless kind of emotion, regardless of what your love is, love of money, love of your pet, love of your family, you know, Eros, Philly, all that good kind of love. It is timeless. It's existed longer than we've been alive. So I think it's a good, you know,
00:03:25 --> 00:03:44 It's an interesting kind of album cover for sure. And the way she looks is a little bit different. She almost looks a little bit more sleek than she did on Messi. But I think Messi's whole point was to kind of be like this, you know, plucky kid. And this is giving, you know, young lady kind of finding her way and being comfortable. So I'm excited to hear how comfortable she's gotten since Messi.
00:03:44 --> 00:03:56 Yes. Okay, so let's start with the intro. Yes, called The Art of Loving. This was done by Bastion Longbake, Tommy D, Olivia Dean, and Nax Wolfgang.
00:04:00 --> 00:04:30 All right. Oh, this sounds like waking up in the morning, sun peeking through the blinds and a diary entry. Lyrics like it wasn't all for nothing. You taught me something. She references Belle in the lyrics about love, you know, something lost and gained and things like that. This is the thesis statement and it's simple. It's meant to kind of just lay the groundwork for how the album is supposed to sound. I think it's effective for what it is.
00:04:31 --> 00:04:47 Yeah, I love the birds chirping in the beginning. Very fun. Yeah, it does definitely sound very fairytale-like with the strings and the harmonies and everything. Yeah. Yeah, I think it's effective as an intro. It does kind of put you into the vibe. It introduces the sound.
00:04:47 --> 00:05:12 well yes um and yeah i like the way olivia has just described this whole concept in interviews about how love is not a fantastical thing it's more just something you experience every day in its various forms like you were saying and it's actually a practice and it's a skill um and yeah i appreciate it it's like a very grounded idea of love and so then that mixed with this kind of fairy tale
00:05:12 --> 00:05:42 kind of situation with the way they produce this song, I think is a really good idea. Oh, yes. Oh, yes. So, what do you rate this one? I mean, for a 40-second intro, it's pretty good. I'll give it an 8. You know, I'll match it, because I was like, I hate rating intros. So, I mean, it is 8 material. I would like for it to be a full song. If that's what it means, then yeah, I'll take the 8, too.
00:05:42 --> 00:06:12 Alright, moving right on to the first official track of this album. It's Nice to Each Other, and this was done by Aqualong, Zach Nahome, and Olivia Dean. And this is the lead single released May 30th, 2025. This song beat that number 4 on the UK singles chart and number 88 in the US Billboard Hot 100. And Olivia has said the song is about the push and pull of exploring your independence in dating. And it's about enjoying someone in the present and allowing it to be both light and meaningful.
00:06:18 --> 00:06:44 you know this one's interesting this one's interesting i can't say that i'm good at the casual things like let's be nice to each other i'm not good at that um i'm not someone who partakes i'm not gonna lie i don't partake in it yes you go straight to are we getting married no i do not i give that impression but i don't but i'm not very good with the whole like
00:06:45 --> 00:07:12 Let's spend all this time together and have it not mean anything. I'm not a situation girly. Situationship girly. But she makes it sound like it's cute. I think that she sings with cheek and desperation. Not with desperation, excuse me. Like there's cheekiness, but no desperation. This is that playful run on the beach after the person you're seeing says, What are we? But then you have to say, Catch me and find out. And you start running and chasing each other.
00:07:12 --> 00:07:41 You know, it's that rom-com montage in the movie where, like, the two leads obviously eventually fall for each other. Even if Olivia says, I don't want a boyfriend. You know, like, she keeps a distance with this person, which is interesting. Because although she's been to this person's house, you know, she doesn't know where the light switches are or where the cutlery is kept. And she mentions that the classic stuff, the classic methods of doing, quote-unquote, the right thing, quote-unquote,
00:07:41 --> 00:08:01 You know, I guess I'd quote. It never works for her. I like the whole soul pop feel. It kind of reminds you like a Fleetwood Mac guitar. Totally. A little bit here and there. But yes, I think it's an interesting way of being lighthearted about something.
00:08:01 --> 00:08:27 that may or may not end a certain way. Because I haven't heard a lot of stories of people saying, oh yeah, the situationship has been going on for a while. We've been intertwining each other's lives and none of us catch this feeling. So I think this is an interesting kind of, like, the beginning fluffness of a situation where it's like we're just lightly dating each other. There's no worries or whatever. But I think it's just interesting how the album works.
00:08:27 --> 00:08:50 Yes, where the story goes. Stop being as light hearted. Yeah. Yeah, for sure. So I think it's interesting. Yeah, no, I agree with you on the concept side of things. I think it's a great way to start the project because it does kind of get so serious as we get into it. But yeah, I guess I look at it a little bit differently from you because I think a lot of people put so much pressure on dating. Mm hmm. I want your opinion for sure.
00:08:51 --> 00:09:15 So I kind of appreciate it's like you don't need to take it too seriously. Like you have no idea where this is going to go. Like just enjoy the moment right now. Yeah. And just, yeah, like you don't need to think too far ahead. Just kind of like be in the moment. And it can still be meaningful, like what she was saying, but it can also just be light as well. Yes. So I kind of like that because I think if you think too much in the beginning phases, it
00:09:15 --> 00:09:23 I don't know. It can just be unnecessary sometimes. I will say, I'm not an overthinker in the beginning. Yeah. When things go wrong, like how the other songs mentioned, I'd be like...
00:09:26 --> 00:09:51 Yeah. But yeah, as a song, I think the whole mix is so warm. Like, I mean, let's talk about her voice a little bit. It's so beautiful. Like, she emotes super, super well. There's a great texture to it. There's something very conversational about the way that she sings and writes. Yeah. And I think that's part of what has led to so much success. Because I think it, like, even just watching, especially watching her perform,
00:09:52 --> 00:10:16 She seems to her. She's so much charisma. She comes off just like very fun. Even with this song, you know, she brings out the tambourine and stuff. It's all very light. And it made me like the song more. And I would say that for most of this album, like watching her perform these songs made me like the songs a lot more. Because it is just like she's just you can just relate to her. Yes. It doesn't feel performative at all.
00:10:16 --> 00:10:38 Which is nice. And I love the way the harmony is arranged in this one as well. I mean, it's very consistent throughout this whole album. It kind of turns into this kind of choral, kind of ethereal kind of situation behind her. Yes. And I like that, you know. I think, again, it still feels, it puts her kind of lead vocal front and center. Again, makes it feel more intimate in that way. Yeah.
00:10:38 --> 00:10:55 But yeah, I like this one. I think this is one of the stronger ones on the album, to be honest. Oh, yeah. I agree. I agree, actually. What did you think of the video? Oh, sorry. Go ahead. No, you're right. I think the video is adorable. I love the music video for this. I think maybe because there is like a British pop song.
00:10:55 --> 00:11:16 Dancing in the studio warehouse thing that's going on like I think about Griff with I miss me to like where she's in that warehouse Jungles Back on 74. It's a very fun concept. It looks like a rehearsal for a commercial or like a musical I like the scene where she's dancing with the lamppost because it just reminds you of Gene Kelly singing in the rain where yeah he was just like
00:11:16 --> 00:11:33 Yeah, I should be worried about how the rain's coming down on me, but I'm gonna keep dancing and singing. So that lightheartedness that you mentioned before, it's nice. But yeah, I think that there's a consistency throughout the visuals that is present, which I think is so important. And think about where she came from in terms of messy...
00:11:33 --> 00:12:03 the dress is here. The little kitneels are here. It's like the blowout now, as opposed to the tight coils. There's something meant to be romantic about her appearance. And I think they did a good job of articulating that. Well, she's not wearing a dress in this video, but the point is, it's like there's something romantic about the jeans and, you know, the cute little spaghetti strap tank top moment that girls are having, you know, like something nice, light and easy, which fits the song. She's giving laid back girl, not cool girl was like, I'm not gonna let
00:12:03 --> 00:12:20 yes there's confidence to it yeah totally so I think that is it's brilliant in its own way because it's so subtle yeah yeah yeah I like the video I think it's very cute I like you know the set changes are all really well done I like how you know the color kind of it gets more colorful at the end yes
00:12:20 --> 00:12:39 But yeah, it matches the song. It's very warm, very chill. And yeah, she, she has great charisma for sure. Because I think a lot of the pop stars right now, they're so performative. Yeah, yeah. And so her being so natural is refreshing, I would say. Yeah, I agree. Yeah. So what would you rate this one?
00:12:39 --> 00:12:55 Woo! Okay. Only because my 10 deserves a super, super, duper, duper 10. I'm going to just give this one a 9.5. I like this one. It's not perfect, but I do have my perfect song on here. Okay, I'm at a 9 for this one.
00:12:56 --> 00:13:25 Next up is Lady Lady, done by Aqualung, Leon Michaels, Olivia Dean, and Homer Steinweiss. And this was released in July of 2025 as the second single from the album and reached number 38 on the UK Singles Char. And when describing the song, Olivia said that Lady Lady is a song about the universe, Mother Nature, and accepting and trusting the plans she has for you. It's about the feeling of having to change just as you're getting used to a version of yourself. And the song reminds her of the power that...
00:13:25 --> 00:13:45 everyone has, or women have, as women. And it feels like peace. All right. Okay, so first verse about growth, moving out of a house, outgrowing a style, wanting to change your hair, I think.
00:13:45 --> 00:14:00 this as a single is interesting because she does look a little bit different not super different where you're like oh my god who's that she has a bunch of makeup on she's so different from her original like messy era it's not that different um
00:14:00 --> 00:14:25 Second verse mentions the changes that do come without the word, especially as a woman with love and accepting of it moving without you and you having to move in a different direction. But yeah, I think the changes come and go, especially as a woman. I'm not sure if I know a single woman, no matter how simple her life is, that doesn't go through a change or something for the first time that...
00:14:25 --> 00:14:54 You know, like some people either are like, all right, I'm going to accept this change or they're just like, whoa, what the heck is going on? And then gradually accept it. I mean, when you go to college or when you fall in love for the first time and get married, you have kids and your kids grow up. There's a constant need for women to accept the time, the passage of time. I'm not saying men don't go through it, but it's very rare to hear a guy say like, I'm going through some pains and some changes, you know? But yeah, I think it's interesting.
00:14:54 --> 00:15:12 that she was able to articulate it well. I would say that the verse is a little bit stronger than the chorus for me. And I think the pre-hook with the background vocals make it feel more soulful for sure. The song is, you know, I think...
00:15:12 --> 00:15:39 she goes beyond talking about the romantic love so that definitely deepens that emotional range on the album um sonically it feels like solange and corinne bailey uh and it just reminds me of don't touch my hair or even like maybe like cranes in the sky like there is this stillness and this silkiness that touches your soul even like in its simplicity i think that's really important um but yeah i think the verses the verses are a little bit stronger and that's what i would say um
00:15:41 --> 00:16:11 I think there's still a little bit of cheek in the lady, lady. She's the man. That lady's the, you know, like, I think it's okay. But I was like, I don't know if I wanted, you know, cheekiness here. I don't know. Yeah. I don't know the right adjective to describe what I wanted for that chorus. But I didn't feel like I was swelling with pride there. As opposed to it being like a bridge to the next verse I was excited to hear. Because the verses were like, you know, good for me.
00:16:12 --> 00:16:39 Yeah, I think I agree with you. I don't love the chorus on this one. I'm actually going to be honest, I don't actually love this song, to be honest. This is one I tend to forget on the album overall. I think it has a nice groove to it. I think the production is pretty. I like the ethereal piano. I like the kind of shaker situation for the percussion in the beginning. And then the percussion kind of builds. There's like bongos. And then finally the drums kind of come in for the chorus, the first chorus. So the overall build is very pleasant in this song.
00:16:39 --> 00:16:54 yeah I'm gonna be honest this song doesn't do much for me and maybe it's because it's not for me that's valid yeah that's super valid yeah but the chorus for sure it's not memorable for some reason
00:16:55 --> 00:17:11 Okay, hang on. Opposite of the ladies and gentlemen. That gentleman, gentleman, going through the changes again. Listen, guys, I do write better songs than that. I don't know what the hell that was. But... Is there, like, a guy song? Like, you know, like...
00:17:11 --> 00:17:31 That's like kind of like Catcher in the Rye about male existential crisis or something. I don't know. Do y'all have anything? Well, no. Okay, no. Okay, look. Obviously, everyone goes through changes and stuff. Like, yes, I would say women have much more dramatic, like, biological changes. Yeah. Um...
00:17:31 --> 00:17:58 you know, mentally, I think everyone's always goes through different phases. I mean, even those lyrics you mentioned in the beginning, it's like, of course, you know, one day it's like, oh, what the hell is this hair style that I've been doing? You know, I feel like there are a few, I'm sure many men have experienced that. Yeah, I don't know. I really don't have much to say on this. You're good. I was being silly. Yeah. But yeah, I think the video, I think,
00:17:59 --> 00:18:23 When I hear the song, I think of like dance classes, like warm, warm ups, which is perfect. If you are a dancer, this is no tea, no shade, but this is one of those like, you know, you start like kind of like stretching and you do your lunges, you hold it for 30 seconds and you move on to the next stretch. It's not a bad thing. But yeah, I hear dance class and speaking of the music video, the ballerinas is really pretty. And I think I'm not sure I could be reaching. Okay.
00:18:23 --> 00:18:51 It'll be raging. But I feel like the music video represents a lot of young women's identity being formed in a dance class. Like a lot of our identity and our beauty comes from like movement and learning how to move and being perceived in that movement comes a lot from dance class. Like when you're playing a sport, it's kind of just like you can get good and get stronger. And I was thinking about how beautiful you look. It's like how good do you play? Which causes its own kind of pressure. But I think with dance class, I think I know at least...
00:18:51 --> 00:19:14 I don't know. I feel like every girl goes to one dance class where they're like, oh, I hate this. Or they love it. Or they're like, eh, I don't really care. So I like the video. But it's just, it's simple. It is what it is. Not anything crazy. Yeah, I like the black and white. I think it's pretty. Yeah. Yeah, I think it kept me entertained at least because there's, you know, there's a lot of movement in it, which is good. But yeah, I'll give this one a seven. Yeah, I'll match you.
00:19:16 --> 00:19:35 Up next is Close Up, and it was done by Zach Nehome, Matt Zara, John Ryan, Julian Bonetta. Ooh, heard this name before. Olivia Dean, Bastion Langbeck, and Max Wolfgang. So Julian Bonetta has done work with One Direction, right?
00:19:36 --> 00:19:51 Correct. Yeah. We've done a couple of One Direction reviews on our channel. So you guys should definitely check those out. Shameless plug because UK pop is pop, honey. We talk about pop music here on our show. But yeah, so. And it makes sense because I like this one.
00:19:52 --> 00:20:12 Apparently, I love Julianne Bonetta. Who knew? You're on the show. Yeah. This song definitely gives me Adele, but in a good way. Oh, okay. When I do comparisons, they're always in a good way. Yes. Yeah, this definitely gives me really good Adele. Especially with the way...
00:20:12 --> 00:20:38 I guess the verses and chorus are very different just in terms of vibe. Like the vibes of the verse, you know, you get this kind of, you get this piano riff, the melody sounds quite dark. It's like a frustration behind it. And then the chorus then is suddenly more intimate. It's more just kind of like self-reflective. It's just a little lighter. And she's like coming to the realization and just acceptance, I guess, of the situation.
00:20:38 --> 00:21:05 So I love that. That's what keeps me interested because there's just so much going on in it. And the production is great. I love the way the horns come in in the second verse. This one is a really good one. Okay, yeah. I felt some like whoosh, some zhuzh from this song. It sounds really pensive, I think, in the beginning because of how the piano comes in and...
00:21:06 --> 00:21:25 Something about it also sounds like a tape being like rewound. Something about the piano is still stuck in my head. It just sounds very like you find your mother's tape or something. I don't know. Maybe. I don't know. Something about it just feels very, it's well mixed. Sounds very vintage, if you will. But yeah, I like the visual...
00:21:25 --> 00:21:55 that she provides with the lyric chasing rabbits don't usually end in happily ever after. And kind of going along this, not even a tangent along this stream of, of an idea of like things not ending well and it being like very confusing and being disorienting. Um, it's a great visualization of someone being avoidant. Um, like when you've had a good experience with this with someone, you're like, what are you doing? What are we doing right now? You know, like why am I vying for your attention? Um, but that's how it is sometimes, especially when you're, I don't,
00:21:55 --> 00:22:24 know if it's when you're young. I think it happens more often when you're a little bit younger. When you get older hopefully you've learned your lesson. I'm looking at you, whoever you are listening to this. But the whole idea is just like, well, after a while it's like, why am I doing this? I can't get close to you. You're out of reach. But then when you do get close and you do kind of, you know, take off the rose-colored glasses, you're able to see things how they are. And I think the way she approaches confrontation is interesting, right? Because like her voice doesn't really
00:22:25 --> 00:22:41 get aggressive, quote unquote, aggressive. Like if you think of like a vocal aggression, the little growls, like she's not like, she's not doing like a vocal growl. There's like, there's no crazy strong belt. She stays pretty much in her chest voice for the most of the song.
00:22:41 --> 00:22:59 I think what the production does is the horn section specifically, it brings confrontational energy. You know, she's not whining and pathetic. She's like, what's up? You know, I think you get to that certain point where you're like, okay, like what's going on? And also like, you know...
00:22:59 --> 00:23:28 You are like this big. I've never seen Honey, the movie Honey. Of course. And she's like, with Michael, the director. And she's like, you know, when I first met you, you used to be whatever, 10 feet tall. But now when I look at you, you're this big. Terrible line. But that's the point. I know. I remember it. Because it's such a bad line. Shout out to Jessica Alba for delivering that line. But the point is, now that I'm looking at you up close, it's so small.
00:23:29 --> 00:23:56 I don't I think there's a lack of respect at this point She's like I can't respect and love you Because you don't respect and love me So I appreciate this one And Adele I totally Now that's in my head oh my god I'm not an Adele like super fan But I have listened to her stuff And I'm like oh yeah no Oh Chris Yeah this one is one of my faves on this album I will give it a 9 Oh Ooh
00:23:58 --> 00:24:06 I'm gonna you know I'll match you I gave it an 8.5 but I think this yeah yeah I'll match you for this one
00:24:07 --> 00:24:31 Okay, moving on to So Easy to Fall in Love. Done by John Ryan, Julian Bonetta, Zach Nahome, Olivia Dean, Max Wolfgang, and Amy Allen. And this was the fourth single from the album and debuted at number nine on the UK singles chart and peaked at number five. And the song is a pat on the back when you're going out the door on your first date. That's cute. Ha!
00:24:37 --> 00:24:59 I'm sorry. I'm cackling because I have done this. Giving someone a literal pat on the back or? Oh, no, no. Me, honey. Because listen, let me say something about me, y'all. When I go out, if I go out with a man, I don't, I'm going to say I have my best clothes. But like, you know, you're fine. And like, you kind of put a little effort. You're like, okay, I'm fine or whatever. Yeah.
00:25:00 --> 00:25:08 My outfits be popping, okay? I'll tell you that right now. Look at me. Right now, it's not giving popping, okay? But go check the Insta, y'all. But yes, no, I enjoy this song.
00:25:10 --> 00:25:34 I enjoy this song sinfully so. I like the bossa nova, the jazz, pop fusion. There's drums, there's pianos, there's trumpets. It gives breezy glamour, effortless seduction. Because regardless of what you may think seduction is, it's meant to kind of entice. It's not like, hey, baby, I make it so easy to fall in love. It's like she's making it easy to fall in love because she's charming.
00:25:34 --> 00:26:00 And I think a lot of people forget that I also can be seductive. Being, quote unquote, the quirky girl is seductive in its own way. Like everyone has their thing. Maybe you're not a smitten kitten. Maybe you're like a little cute little bunny cute or like you're like deer cute or whatever. You know, golden retriever. You know, everyone has their own thing. And I think she does a good way of illustrating that, you know, Saturday night and the rest of your life. Yeah.
00:26:00 --> 00:26:16 fish air and the girl of your dreams. Like, there's something very lighthearted, but also, like, serious about it. Like, you know? Like, I'm offering you the nighttime, but also a lifetime. You know? Um, and I believe the ease of what you speak is achievable. Like,
00:26:16 --> 00:26:39 No, you're not going to just fall in love when you meet someone, right? But there is this thing when you meet someone and you guys are both kind of getting into each other and you don't have to hide and you're easygoing, but you're intentional. Like, to me, love shouldn't feel like that Vogue article or like a Sabrina Carpenter song, you know, and people embarrassing you.
00:26:39 --> 00:26:48 I don't think it should be like that. But yeah, I think the background vocals on this one are fabulous. They build really well. And then the last chorus, you get...
00:26:48 --> 00:27:10 The production that kind of gets a little bit bolder or like has like little stops and then resumes and whatnot. They punctuate the confidence on the track. I like this song. For sure. Easy to love. Because I've been told that. And it's true. It doesn't have to be hard. No, I have been told this. Well, I think it's more...
00:27:10 --> 00:27:34 It doesn't even matter what the other person thinks. It's just a self-belief. No, no. It's one of those things where it's like, I do believe it myself, but it's also one of those things where it's just like, oh, shoot, this is how I would describe myself. This is great. Because, you know, sometimes you meet someone, you're like, I don't know why I like you, but that person is very confident, blah, blah, blah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. They know why they are how they are. But then that person tells you, like, you know what? You're, I like being your friend, Chris. Yeah.
00:27:34 --> 00:27:50 You might be like, okay. But then I start listing a bunch of them. Oh, okay, yeah. I am all those things. So I think both can be true. I get what her tone is, but I'm saying for me, I was like, oh, I was totally. In terms of the song. Yes. Yeah. In terms of what it's trying to do, I would say. Yeah.
00:27:50 --> 00:28:12 Yeah, and I appreciate the kind of self-affirmation without being too cheesy Because I think this concept could go very, very cheesy You know, of course, we've heard a lot of songs before that's like, I'm the best, like, I'm the shiz You know? But, is that safe? It is safe
00:28:13 --> 00:28:39 So tough. But yeah, in this case, though, it's done in such a light way. And it's cute. But again, it's not like overly done. So I appreciate that. I think she told that line really, really well. Yeah. This one, you mentioned Corinne Bailey Ray earlier. This one definitely gives me that line for sure. Because it has that groove that Corinne does a lot in her more upbeat stuff.
00:28:39 --> 00:29:06 Yeah, I think this is almost the same idea with the first song where, you know, people put so much pressure on dating sometimes and you're like scared. You know, it's like, oh, God, I want, you know, people try to put on a character to like make the other person like them kind of thing. And this also comes with age. I think that happens when you're younger more so. I would hope at least. But, you know, this is very much like you're awesome or I'm awesome. I don't need to try that hard.
00:29:06 --> 00:29:34 Yeah. Like, yeah. Anyone with eyes could tell you that. Either they like me or they don't, but like I'm easy to fall in love with. So, like I love, I like that. I like that. Yeah. Again, I appreciate that it's not the overly, overly confident, like, I'm perfect and I'm, you know, like, because I think that's more where it's gone. Just in this current, like, culture. It's more just like, I don't have anything that I need to work on. Like, I'm perfect the way I am. Take it or leave it. And it's like a very like.
00:29:34 --> 00:29:53 yeah you know what I mean it's like very black and white like this one is is very much just yeah it's very subtle which I appreciate um and yeah I agree with you on the production that little piano solo is great the horns are really well done quite subtle actually uh so yeah really really nice production here and the video is so cute too
00:29:53 --> 00:30:22 Oh, yes, indeed. I think... Yeah, like playing Cupid. Yeah, I think... Is it Meshach? Meshach Henry has been choreographing a lot of her videos, and this one is probably one of the more involved ones because it's not just one set and, like, set pieces and camera angles. It's, like, multiple sets and all this other stuff. So this is one of my favorite ones, I would say. And it does feel like a musical, and I think that was done on purpose, obviously. There's, like, so much little Fosse movements is giving Sweet Charity here and there. But, yeah, I think, like I said, in terms of, like, having that cute...
00:30:22 --> 00:30:48 that cuteness but also having a little bit of a seriousness like the saturday night rest of your life line it's like when you meet someone you don't know what's going to happen and you and you're like oh i hope in your mind this will keep going and going and going because with all of these little couples that met you don't there is no what happened it's just happily ever after it's very sweet nothing else is just swooning and swaying and dancing and blah blah blah so i think that's just one of those really cute like romantic
00:30:48 --> 00:31:05 kind of videos that is captured in the video. And I think it's so interesting how they did the product placement. I know that's such a random thing to say. I loved it. Yeah. I used the perfume that she was spraying and I was like, OMG, stop it. Thank you for not shoving that in my face. And then the Cartier as well. So I think it's a good...
00:31:06 --> 00:31:31 Yeah. Not me naming them. We're not getting paid to. But the point is, there's two brands in there. Two of which that I'm acquainted with. And I was like, oh, I love how y'all pulled that in there. I loved it. I loved it. Yeah. So I'd like this song. Yeah. Okay. What do you give it? 11. Me too. I'm joking. Okay. Yeah, no, this is my 10 for sure. This is the one that I kept going back to. Yeah. Hmm.
00:31:31 --> 00:31:46 Up next is Let Alone The One You Love, and this was done by Zach in the Home, John Ryan, Jillian Bonetta, Nat Zara, Olivia Dean, the Sunil Gordon, Max Wolfgang, and Bastion Langbeck. Who would do that to a friend? Let alone the one you love.
00:31:48 --> 00:32:17 All right. Got a couple of names on this one. And we've already heard Julian Bonetta's stuff. So how do we feel? Are we getting Adele from this one? Are we not? Yes, for sure. I mean, I actually find it very interesting that this is one of the ones that she chose to perform on SNL. You know, she went with, you know, yeah, she went with this kind of, yeah, I would say this is the most Adele kind of song on the album. So I wonder if, you know, people felt it was just very accessible. Yeah.
00:32:18 --> 00:32:42 And yeah, you know, I feel like there aren't that many ballads out right now. So maybe, you know, she's trying to take over that kind of ballad queen kind of situation in the current kind of music scene. Yeah. I will say her vocal execution is really good on this one. You know, it still sounds pretty strong while still being delicate and quite sad, which I appreciate. Mm-hmm.
00:32:42 --> 00:32:58 And yeah, I think the way that was produced as well, it really, again, lets her vocal just shine. It's quite subtle. The horns are really well placed. They only happen kind of a few times and each time they happen, it's kind of a moment in the song, which I love.
00:32:58 --> 00:33:23 um yeah i i don't think it's the most impactful song you know i think this is one of those kind of like easy listening kind of situations um as i really try to listen to it more actively and really pay attention to the lyrics though you know it is a really really beautiful song um and and yeah she she definitely again it's like
00:33:23 --> 00:33:48 I feel like she writes in a way that's just very relatable. Oh, yeah. Like, again, it's not putting on the character at all. Like, it's very, it's not too dramatic. I think that's what it is. Oh, yes. Oh, interesting that you say that because I have something in my notes about her approach to this. Yeah. Which is similar to you. Mm-hmm.
00:33:48 --> 00:34:09 I think this is one of those songs where people might also hear Amy. I've seen Amy's name thrown in their wine house. Her name thrown in their card a bit. When you say Adele, that makes a little bit more sense. But I think in terms of like the pamper and the rasp and the old soul sound, I think people just think Amy. Sure. But either way, Adele or Amy, I think because of how raw...
00:34:09 --> 00:34:36 Olivia's voice sounds and certain articulations where she kind of maintains her accent as she's singing. People think Amy. I think it's interesting with this one, the difference between her, even in N's L sometimes, maybe I can say this. There's no agony in her voice, especially with the Amy comparison. So I think it's, although it's helpful to sonically compare that way, I think there is no agony in the voice. There's no...
00:34:36 --> 00:34:56 like serious pain. There's some exasperation, some disappointment, but there's nothing that, but nothing that feels like a knife in the heart. All right. Like this doesn't feel super painful. And I think depending on the kind of approach that you're looking for, that might not feel like enough. Like, is she singing? Well, yes. Is it, is it like sitting there in her chest and she's, she's, she's,
00:34:56 --> 00:35:21 Belting a little bit. Yes. But yeah, I think also it could sit in the perfect amount of frustration. So just depending on how you want to receive things or how you digest her voice or digest the words, you can kind of either pick one side or the other. Or you can be in the middle like me. Like we're in the second part of the song in the verse. She says she utilizes her vibrato.
00:35:21 --> 00:35:44 during sustained notes. And I wish she would have given us a little like a mixed voice moment, like too much to handle and to dial it back and like I'm not having it. I wish she would kind of go for that little too much to handle or something like that. Something to kind of give it like a little bit more wetness because I think, I know wetness sounds crazy, but like I want her voice to kind of get a little bit more warm as opposed to this cold, chilling, low, cold,
00:35:44 --> 00:36:08 felt and I feel like she can do it I'm not saying it's bad I'm not saying she didn't do a great job I just wanted a little bit of but I think that's also the beauty in her approach as well it's reserved and it's still seen as um powerful um it's just not raw so before he goes she has a way of singing before you start nagging I'm just saying two things can be true at the same time you could
00:36:09 --> 00:36:33 Or you could take it as it is. Like, I'm hoping as the live performances come, she'll start to deviate from how she recorded it. And I think that will come eventually where, you know, after a year performing it, she's going to, you know, add a certain kind of behind it. And I think the song is good. It's about a lesson learned, acknowledging that something wasn't good for you. But, you know, like not being happy about it. It's not great.
00:36:33 --> 00:36:56 that the thing ended, but this person was holding you back. They were unappreciative of your existence and the influence on their life. So it's like it's time to let it go, you know? So I think overall, the song does a good job of expressing all of that. But I think certain points, I'm like, ooh, instead of vibrato, can we get something else here? And I think that might be for me just what I grew up listening to.
00:36:56 --> 00:37:08 Like Tony, you know? Like Tony's always super low, but then she'll give you a little something-something. So, yeah. So, I don't know. Yeah, that's valid. Okay, so I give this one a 7.5. I give this one a 7.
00:37:10 --> 00:37:38 Next up is the breakout hit. It is Man I Need, done by Zach Nahome, Olivia Dean, and Tobias Jesso Jr. And this was released August 15th, 2025, as the third single off the album. And the song peaked at number one in five countries, including the UK, and became her first chart entry in the US, peaking at number four on the Billboard Hot 100. And this is a song about knowing how you deserve to be loved and not being afraid to ask for it. And our patron, Ren,
00:37:38 --> 00:38:05 said that Man I Need is incredible and a totally deserved breakout hit. The song just radiates positivity. I think that is the overall thought about this one. I mean, it's at, what, over 300 million streams on streaming? So it's like, it's a lot. I mean, I think that's only on Spotify. That's, I'm sure, it's way higher. Yeah. I didn't want to give Spotify a platform.
00:38:08 --> 00:38:33 even though we use them um but yeah i think it's got this has like the 300 million streams on spotify so you know it's it's doing really well and i'm not gonna lie and act as if i didn't think it was raid for a second because literally as i'm scrolling through sns um the course was the only thing that you hear you know and we had just are like not just done but we've we've listened to raid quite often and it had like that old kind of soulful feel to it i was like oh
00:38:33 --> 00:39:02 okay, Ray got something cute going on. It's not her, and that's completely fine. I think two girls can exist at the same time, killing it, with the retro sound. I feel like this song sounds like This Will Be by Natalie Cole and The Way You Make Me Feel, but it meets soul pop and a little bit of gospel. If I should put that talk to me, talk to me repeated phrase. The song is a good representation of what a lot of women, I'm saying women specifically, because
00:39:02 --> 00:39:29 People perspective. We say a lot of things to men like, hey, time and place is all figured out. I'm allowing you to come into my space. This is all I'm expecting from you. It's very simple conditions. Now come be the man that I need. Poof, make it happen. You know, I mean, she's not asking for like money or jewels. She's asking for emotional availability and willingness. Like, that's not too much to ask, you know, but for some people, maybe it is.
00:39:29 --> 00:39:57 Maybe it is, but I think this song resonated with a lot of people because of that. Not just because it sounds happy and positive, but it's like, hey, I would like love. Are you ready to be the person that I fall in love with? And that's okay to say. I think people think that, you know, wanting love is kind of embarrassing because of the Vogue article and other reasons too. But if someone is genuine with you and you are genuine with them, it's okay to be there for each other. I think this song is great for...
00:39:57 --> 00:40:05 the fall and evenings out on the town. It's just, it's, it's, it's a solid song. It's enjoyable. I feel like,
00:40:06 --> 00:40:36 I don't know if I'm like in love with it. Yeah. As much as I like nice to each other. Right. Or like easy to love. But it's not a bad song. I think the overall sound of it though is very enticing. It's solid and people can relate to it. And because it is nice and bright, it's just the timing was perfect. Because I don't know what was really hot at the time either. Not discrediting her, but I'm just like, what was that we were all listening to? And I can't think of it.
00:40:36 --> 00:40:52 So that's amazing timing, amazing positioning from her team as well. Pushing this song, I think, was a good idea. I think maybe Where's My Husband was the thing that we were all singing. So this kind of just goes along with that whole like...
00:40:53 --> 00:41:21 I don't know. It's just the elements were all in her favor. Yeah. No, I also agree. I think the lyrical content is great. And again, it kind of goes back to what I've been saying the whole time with her writing style. That it's not bratty. It's not annoying. It's just kind of, it's quite confident. And it's just speaks of someone who's just mature and knows what they want. Yeah. And, you know, the whole, you know, talk to me, talk to me, hook. You know, communication is like the most important thing in any type of relationship. Relationship, yeah. Yeah.
00:41:21 --> 00:41:46 And so that just being kind of the main thing, like we need to talk to each other. Yeah. Like, tell me what you're thinking. Right, right. And I'm telling you what I'm thinking. And I want to make sure I'm on the same page kind of thing. Yeah. So yeah, I just like that as a concept. Because again, I think a lot of these songs where it's like, I like, be the man that I want. And I feel like a lot of it, again, in the kind of current culture, it turns into like,
00:41:46 --> 00:42:06 kind of ridiculous demands or just things that you know what I'm saying no you're so right like it turns into a I mean it kind of goes back to that kind of I'm perfect and I deserve all this stuff so do it for me it's just like as opposed to this kind of very um again more realistic kind of plea just for communication yeah yeah
00:42:06 --> 00:42:24 Yeah, she's stepping in to like kind of like receive and like, this is your stage. You can do whatever it is that you feel like fulfills you and fulfill, you know, I don't want to get too like, you know, 50-50. But some people, this is one of those things like emotional 50-50ness. Like we both have to kind of meet in the middle here.
00:42:24 --> 00:42:39 Right. That's what I mean. Yeah. But I think that's why this has resonated. Yeah. Because I feel the other stuff that has been trending on socials and stuff has been the really bratty, like, you know, kind of over the top kind of stuff. Yeah.
00:42:39 --> 00:43:06 And this goes the complete opposite, where it's actually very realistic and it's mature. Mm-hmm. Yeah. So I think that's probably why. I think I would agree with you as a song. I'm actually kind of surprised, just as a melodically, I would not have picked this one out. Oh, interesting. As the standout breakout song. Right. Right? Like, if I was an A&R, I wouldn't have been like, this is the one, you know, that's going to make it, I would say. So that's kind of awesome that it's having this moment. Mm-hmm. Yeah.
00:43:06 --> 00:43:33 But yeah, I will say this does have a bit more of a kind of dancey vibe to it. I think the overall instrumental is still quite chill, I would say, with the way the instrumentation is done. But the drums, you know, they're doing a 16 beat, which is, you know, traditionally used in dance songs or disco songs. So at least, you know, it does pep you up after the album so far, I would say. And it makes it stand out.
00:43:33 --> 00:43:59 Yeah, I would say this is another one where the live versions for sure, because she just seems to be having so much fun on stage. That has made me like the song more. I think when this started kind of going up the charts, I didn't it didn't do much for me. And that's fine. I think virality doesn't indicate like. I don't know, it's kind of tough. If everyone's using the same sound and it's trending, does that mean it's like.
00:44:00 --> 00:44:07 You know, it's hard. I'm not pooping on. We're not pooping on the song, but it's one of those things where I'm like, would people have found this on their own?
00:44:07 --> 00:44:33 Right. You know, so I totally get it. It's tough with this whole like social media thing. Like I legit thought it was Ray because I thought it was Ray. I looked it up. So this could be some of that too. Or maybe because it sounds like Corinne. Maybe it sounds like Amy to someone. Maybe it sounds like what I wish Adele would try to do because the crying when she's not really sad anymore is getting old. I'm so sorry. Adele, you're not a bad singer. She's apparently doing a dance album.
00:44:33 --> 00:44:59 And she can do it. This is an example of that. I'm just saying. Right? Can you imagine her doing this? No, I mean, I'm saying she probably agrees with you. Like, she's ready to do something different. Oh, thank you. I don't want, like, the Adelians to come for me. I'm like, no. Like, she's apparently changing it up. Okay, God. I think she deserves it. Yeah. What did you think of the video? Oh, yes. So, the video for this one. Again, Meshach.
00:44:59 --> 00:45:19 is a great choreographer. There's a lot going on in these videos. Like, the men that are throughout and choreographing them, I think is what makes it feel so, I don't know, not Bachelor-esque, but it's giving, like, which one will win her heart. It's giving Souter. Yeah.
00:45:19 --> 00:45:41 And I know a lot of girlies on book talk who would be like, oh, my gosh. Wow. All of you want me is amazing. But also she's not paying them any mind. She's kind of just there being the object of their affection. And I think that's great. I loved I don't know. I don't understand the complete like rigged like what's it called when they're rigged up in the wire. Oh, yeah.
00:45:41 --> 00:46:08 I don't know what that's called either. Yeah. Oh, yeah. But I don't understand what the whole point of that scene was. I guess kind of have them kind of just bouncing around and floating and they're holding on to her. I was like, okay. They were trying to, you know, woo her. Cloud nine? Yeah. They're all just trying to woo her in different ways. Yes. This is what I thought. Yes. I guess they're all jumping through hoops in their own kind of way. But again, this is one of those videos where it's like it's just so involved. So shout out to the Koiographer. Yeah.
00:46:08 --> 00:46:33 so a job for you yeah i think it's cute and again she just has great charisma yeah like she can just run around and like you know i'm just watching her the whole time and i'm in it you know that's a good quality to have that you can't really teach i would say our little starlet look at her yeah so i i get this one an eight okay okay
00:46:34 --> 00:47:01 Hmm. I gave an eight, but I'm willing to give it a 0.5. Yeah. Maybe I'll give it a 0.5. Yes, I'll give it a 0.5 extra. Nice. Up next is Something In Between, and this was done by Olivia Dean, Tobias Justo Jr., and Sir Nolan. Oh, can we still be something in between? All right. So now we're back at this, like, situationship thing.
00:47:03 --> 00:47:23 Which isn't terrible, but this one sounds a little less tongue-in-cheek and kind of just feels like, you know, a little kind of serious. Yeah, I would say I like this one melodically. I don't love the production on this one. Because I think it has the potential to have a lot more going on.
00:47:24 --> 00:47:51 but instead they kind of went with this really, really, like, low-impact kind of vibe. Like, there's this kind of effective guitar, there's this kind of tap-tap-like percussion. And I just feel like this could, you could do, like, a full band, more groovy kind of thing with this song. Like, melodically, I think it could work. So it's just interesting that that's the choice that they went with. I would say I like the lyrics more than the melody.
00:47:51 --> 00:48:17 Oh, interesting. Okay. Because some of these lines are great. Like, I love the bridge about the grass being greener where you water it, but then not knowing if you can grow there. This whole, like, visual of feeling kind of stuck, you know? Okay, yeah. In various ways, I thought was really well done. But yeah, melodically, another kind of more forgettable one for me, unfortunately. Yeah.
00:48:17 --> 00:48:30 Hmm. Interesting. Oh, I know what you mean. I think there's certain like a melodies here and the, the track that like the, in the vocal itself that kind of, I muted myself. I'm so sorry.
00:48:31 --> 00:48:55 holding onto this button for dear life. But yeah, no, I think there are certain things in the melody that make me realize like, oh yeah, okay, I get what he's saying. I get what he's saying. Like lyrically, I think it's interesting. Like she's like, I'm not hers, I'm not yours, I'm not anyone's, right? But she's too scared to leave and all these other things like that. But I think there is a certain like, I don't know, yeah.
00:48:55 --> 00:49:18 I don't want to say it's tripping, but I think the way the rapidness of some of the words coming in just makes it feel a little clumsy. And I think that is kind of part of the song's overall atmosphere. Because you're just confused. Yeah, because it's like, you know what you're saying, right? You want to leave. Stop trying to convince yourself otherwise. Why are we still doing it? You know what I'm saying? So I think that is, you know.
00:49:18 --> 00:49:47 cool. I think she does a better job of articulating this on her song Dive, if I'm not mistaken. Yeah, Dive has a better, like, you know, she says I'm like a wave, like a tsunami of like confusion, and you're like surfing. Like, I think Dive does a better job of saying, hey, I don't know where I am right now with things. I think this is more like serious. But yeah, the lyricism is definitely good. I just think I also kind of just don't feel very like, oh, impacted by this. I bet
00:49:48 --> 00:50:09 So, yeah. Yeah. Again, melodically, I agree with you, right? Like, it's interesting. I feel like the idea of trying to capture that kind of moment when the spark is, like, kind of fading, but it's, like, kind of there, and you're kind of, like, not really sure. Like, I like that as a concept, but yeah. Yeah. This song, unfortunately, is only okay for me. So I'll give it a seven. Oh.
00:50:10 --> 00:50:26 I'm not going to lie to you. I didn't really, the song is not very remarkable to me. I think this is probably like not my favorite one on this album. So I'm going to give it a 6.5 because it's, it's okay, but it's just not as strong as some other stuff I've, I've heard. Yeah. I'm listening to her. Yeah.
00:50:27 --> 00:50:56 Next up is Loud, done by Bastion Langbeck, Max Wolfgang, Tommy D, and Olivia Dean. And Olivia said that vocally, the song is quite exposing. It's a single vocal with a guitar and then strings. And there was originally one take that was recorded, and then she never sung it again because she found it to be too intense. And our patron Ren said that the build in the chorus is superb, and the fact that she recorded the song in one take with the band just makes it even better.
00:50:56 --> 00:51:02 And it also has James Bond theme tune vibes. It does.
00:51:06 --> 00:51:31 it does that is so funny i mean her um recording it with the arranger um rosie danvers at the air adele is that's the one i was like oh yeah i could totally get the bond thing yeah um i think in its recording of itself is actually really good as well yeah this is an interesting one because it
00:51:31 --> 00:51:43 come and end in tiny, like, packages all neatly wrapped up. Like, sometimes there is a limbo that you are placed into. I think this is the one, like, really, like, sad thing.
00:51:43 --> 00:52:06 like really sad song, on this album. Like sometimes you're in limbo after the conclusion of a relationship and that's real. Or maybe you're in hell and hell isn't like fire and brimstone. It's silence, right? So I think the visual of the four hands at the piano is an interesting one. However true it may or may not be, the point is she let someone else's hands...
00:52:06 --> 00:52:22 be a part of something in her house, right? Something that she cares the most about is music. That in itself is intimate. Now those four hands are down to two and it's like you're not there anymore. They connect on something that she loves, you know? And I think that's really tough. Like if you connect with someone and...
00:52:22 --> 00:52:49 have all these things in common. Oh, I like you. You know, this is nice. And then to have it just completely cut off, it's tough to lose that. And I think it's interesting because lyrically she is saying, like, I wasn't looking for anything. But then I basically, I was given eyes to see a future with you and for you to take it away. It's like, ooh, ooh. So yeah, the person made her feel things, but now things are unspoken because this person ghosted. So at the end, like, this is like a crazy...
00:52:49 --> 00:53:15 like giant analogy for being ghosted but it's true like all these little moments that were significant to me that left an effect on me because i shared them with you or like i just thought oh this would be different or like oh you surprised me this is like the biggest surprise and i think that is she did a really good job so i can understand why it might feel a little like raw and if it's something like this did happen to her which i'm pretty sure has happened to like a lot of people getting ghosted but yeah i don't get the whole like
00:53:15 --> 00:53:31 super, super connected, and then, I'm going to slip away. I know. But maybe that's the avoidance she was talking about a couple songs ago. That's right. Mm-hmm. Yes. I know. I actually wrote this in my notes. I was like, if there's ever a movie about being ghosted, this is the song.
00:53:33 --> 00:54:01 I mean, sheesh. I mean, yeah. Another thing that I wrote was, I want Kelly Clarkson to cover this song. Stop. Can you imagine? Oh my God. I would love it. This one's so beautiful. This one's definitely a highlight for me on this album. It stood out immediately. Like from the first time I heard this album, it was one that really piqued my interest. And every time I went through it, it was always one that, yeah, I definitely would like turn my head a bit, you know, every time it started. Yeah.
00:54:02 --> 00:54:11 The chorus is so beautiful. It's so heartbreaking. The way the song builds is so perfect with the way the strings come in and everything. And yeah, I think...
00:54:11 --> 00:54:34 You know, I kind of said this a few times now about her vocals, but this is a really good showcase of what she's able to do. Because even though it is such a heartbreaking concept and lyrics as well, she doesn't really sound like she's going to cry. Like she's not at the point where she's fully breaking down. Oh, yeah. Yeah. She's feeling things. And it's just the raw feeling.
00:54:35 --> 00:54:48 like output of it. Yeah. You know, I kind of love that. I love that. It's not too, uh, desperate. Mm hmm. Yeah. There's still a strength under it.
00:54:48 --> 00:55:15 Yes, there is. I'm still like holding myself together here. Like I'm not falling apart because of this, but I'm annoyed by this. My dignity. I must keep my dignity. Yes, that's what I really like about it because I think this is another situation where if another singer got this, they could turn it that way. Oh, yeah. It would feel very different. So I really appreciate that execution of it. But yeah, this one's a huge highlight. I give this one a 10. Yes, this one's the other perfect song. Oh, look at us. Agreeing.
00:55:16 --> 00:55:39 Like the last... Hang on. In our defense, we usually don't match it this much, but I feel like the last couple of episodes, you know... We have. We have a lot... We have similar tastes, though. I feel like... I'm trying to think. Maybe it was like an older artist, like a Kylie or like a Steps. We've been like a little bit separated, but not even with Kylie. I feel like Kylie... Oh, wow. When have we ever been like really separate? I mean, I feel like...
00:55:39 --> 00:56:00 Our tens are not always the same. That's maybe where I was at. Yeah. Okay. Yeah. That makes sense. Like I think our scores normally go on the same kind of like, what's this? What's the word? Trajectory? Trajectory. Sure. Usually like if I'm like mad with a song, you're also mad with a song. Like it's relatively rare that I love a song and you hate a song or vice versa. It happens once in a while.
00:56:00 --> 00:56:17 Yes, and it's so funny when it comes, I'm like, what? You don't like this? Yeah. Identity Cain episode. I was like, that's all you're going to give it? I remember. Oh, yeah, you're right. Yes. I was even upset. I was just like, huh? We sing it together all the time. He's like, yeah. Doesn't mean it's great. And I'm like, oh, my God. Yeah.
00:56:17 --> 00:56:44 You know? And also, if you've made it this far, subscribe. Hello. Because as you can see, we have a good time. We're fun. All right. And I was cackling after just giving louder reviews. Okay. But you know what? Life is about being happy after sometimes a breakup and moving on. So we're going to move on to the next song, which is Baby Steps. And it's done by Bastian Langbeck, Olivia Dean, and Max Wolfgang. For now, I'm taking bubbles.
00:56:47 --> 00:57:11 All right. So this one felt a little like Marvin Gaye's What's Going On, but it was slowed down, given gentle grooves and a little tender percussion. Something about it just felt like old soul records. And I think that's what they set out to do, right? You think Motown. I mean, was Marvin signed to Motown? Yeah, sure. But his music got really freaking good when he left. But the point is...
00:57:11 --> 00:57:30 It's still good. Learn to love, learn to heal, and maybe acknowledging the progress in relationships. Or self-love. Is it giant leaps but baby steps? Can I tell you, I enjoy the lyric, There will be roses on the shelf because this house gonna love itself. I think that's so sweet.
00:57:30 --> 00:57:55 Because, you know, the whole, like, I can buy myself flowers. We get it. We've heard it time and time again. Take yourself out, girl, blah, blah, blah. But this is a way of rephrasing it. And I was like, that makes sense. You know, because if you can take care of flowers or, you know, at least put them in your house. I mean, you took time. You thought about it. You've decorated. You've put it someplace. You can see it. There's something. When you have purpose, you have pride.
00:57:56 --> 00:58:11 Whatever your purpose may be, if you keep doing it, there's a sense of pride there and there's a sense of love that comes from that pride. But yeah, I think also the lyric, I won't fall backwards if I fall forward. I'm like, yes!
00:58:11 --> 00:58:33 I mean, babies will fall, right? Babies will keep getting up. Girl Felt, okay? The song is a highlight for me for personal reasons because I truly applaud her ability to make, you know, missing a presence or having a lack of self-love in a positive way instead of like beating yourself up, right? You're like, okay, this is missing a little bit.
00:58:33 --> 00:59:03 This is different, but I want to learn how to operate without this in my life. You know, there's no one to call when the plane lands or when it takes off. I get that. Like, okay, now readapting to society. I'm back in civilian life off of my cloud nine bubble, you know? And I think that is really good because there's a lot of songs people beat themselves up or they feel very like down in the dumps about romance, which is fine. Yeah. Completely fine. But after that, get your little fat baby foot up and start plotting.
00:59:03 --> 00:59:31 Right. Exactly. Diapers and tissues and all go. Yes. Yeah. No, I think one lyric that stood out to me was that I'll be my own pair of safe hands. Like for sure. Like, because, yeah, I mean, yes, of course you should rely on your support system around you, but you do need to do some work on your own. You know, you do. Yeah. And so I appreciate that. Yeah, this one's great. It has a great drive to it, the way they produced it. And yeah, I think they balanced the kind of hope.
00:59:31 --> 01:00:01 with the melancholy really well here in the vibe. And yeah, I think the chorus is catchy with that little... Yeah, I love it. Harmonies are nice. There's some little light ad-libs in the back too, which are nice and fun to listen out for. There's actually a little funky bass line going on in the back too. I had to like really use my in-ears, like fully noise cancelling to like really hear it. But yeah, the production has some great little moments in it. Yeah, I enjoyed this one.
01:00:01 --> 01:00:30 I give it a... Okay, this one might... It's an 8.5 for me. Nice. Next up is A Couple Minutes, done by Zach Nahome, Tommy D, Olivia Dean, Maverick Saber, Lou Ragland, and James Hawkins. And even though this is not an official single, it has actually charted, including at number 13 in the UK and number 72 in the US. Only have a couple minutes unless we're going back to real life. Oh, a couple of y'all have run to your ex, huh? Yeah.
01:00:32 --> 01:01:01 I can honestly say I've never ran into any man that I've blessed with my presence. Really? No. The crazy thing is though, I will run into every single freaking person from past, present, or yesteryear. When I tell you, I'll be driving and I'll see someone running down Eastern Parkway in Brooklyn. I'm like, oh my god, we worked this one shift together at this one job and I liked you. We went to go get ramen afterward. Or like, I'll be at the mall and I saw, oh my god, I went to American Dream this mall and I saw
01:01:01 --> 01:01:29 the queen of a heartbreak song, Melanie Fiona. I see her with her sunglasses on with her kid. And I'm like, she's right at one of those little zip-zoodle, little animal thingies. And I looked at her, I was like, I know those eyebrows. And I looked at her, I pointed at her, and she's like, I heard her kind of like, she wasn't looking. I was like, we're looking at each other. I said, are you Melanie Fiona? She's like, yeah. I said, I love your music. She goes, thank you. I said, thank you. Y'all, 4 a.m.,
01:01:30 --> 01:01:52 Wrong side of a love song. Oh, my God. Point is, I run into people like that. That is how I run into people. But men I've dated? Never. Never. Ever. Never, right? So I just think it's so interesting. I mean, there's one person. Don't jinx it. No, there is one person I'd like to run into. For what reason? Huh? For what reason? For what reason?
01:01:53 --> 01:02:23 Because it wasn't, we, listen, it wasn't our fault what happened. Anyway, point is, and if you'd like to know what the problem was, please tune into our Patreon. I will spill all the beans. I'm not spilling beans. I'm joking. You guys will never know unless you listen to my song that I'm going to record about it. Anyway, point is, she captures the feeling of running into someone, recounting the surface level thing. Because you don't want to get too like, oh yeah, you sing anyone right now? It's interesting. Because it does happen.
01:02:23 --> 01:02:30 You know, it does happen, you know, and then you kind of give each other the illusion of closure. And it's like, babe, listen, you got the closure when it ended.
01:02:31 --> 01:02:58 closure my older friend once told me she's like closure is a luxury so many people feel like they're entitled to knowing why why why why and they kind of bogged themselves down with it and it's like an end it wouldn't need to end i don't know but the song kind of gives that feeling of not seeking it out but just kind of feeling okay you're good like what happened between us didn't ruin either one of us that's the silver lining that she mentions um in the song um
01:02:58 --> 01:03:12 I like the lyric. Like you said, she's very relatable and she's good at writing a lyric and you're like, oh my God, girl, how you know that? But it's like, we all have the same shared experiences, which kind of breaks my heart a little bit because dang, obviously our hearts broken and it's kind of sad. But,
01:03:13 --> 01:03:43 the lyric where she says, you're the only one that knows a name, that name. You're the only one who makes that face. Like she's not going to ever forget those moments that she had with that person. Like you can always make new moments, but when you see that person, all those things flood in like the sofa and the time you spent together. And then, um, you know, the bridge where she kind of, sort of seems like she wants to say something, but she won't because, you know, Oh my God. I love how it all unfolds. Um, I will say though, this one is so low. Yeah.
01:03:43 --> 01:04:10 This one's a little for the snails. Yeah. And I think, I'm not going to lie, I did speed it up a little bit. And it was like a .25, 1.25. And it was the perfect tempo for me. Smart. So I thought it was just a little too slow, right? That's just a preference thing. If you kind of want to listen to something like at a cafe, it fits. Totally. But yeah, I will say again, I think as she continues to perform this song, she'll start to add a little bit more.
01:04:10 --> 01:04:35 Because I saw the colors performance and I was like, okay, you have to keep it to the record. And I get it. I know that was like literally the record. I was like, oh, it's like. It was weird. Yeah. I was like, it's literally. Yeah. She ate the CD. Yeah. Literally. She downloaded the MP3, was like downloading, upload, you know, like it was really good. But yeah, I love the storytelling here. But in terms of sonically, I don't know if I will return to it constantly. Yeah.
01:04:35 --> 01:05:01 I wouldn't skip it if it came on, but I don't know if I would sit here and like seek this one out specifically. Unless it happens to me. But when it happens to me, I will be listening to this song. Yeah. I mean, this has happened to me. So, yeah, I mean, I think the lyrics are very relatable for sure. I had no notes when I mean, I agree with you kind of on all of that. But I can agree with everything you said, because melodically, it's really different.
01:05:01 --> 01:05:13 is quite boring for me, I'm going to be honest. It just doesn't really do anything. For me, even melodically, it just doesn't really go anywhere. It's just a little plotting. Plotting.
01:05:14 --> 01:05:41 And this is where I maybe needed some like ad libs or... That's what I'm saying. I just needed it to just like build in some way. Yes. It just doesn't go anywhere. So it kind of loses me, I would say. Mm-hmm. So, yeah. I think the melody's fine. It's not a bad song. It's just... Yeah. It's just not one that I ever really looked forward to when I listened to the album. You know, it kind of would lose me and I'd start thinking about other things. So, yeah. I...
01:05:42 --> 01:06:05 I appreciate on the album because I think in terms of the storytelling, I think it makes sense to include a song about this kind of. Oh, yes. Encounter. You know, awkward reunion. Yeah. That you may have. And you just kind of, you know, some feelings coming back and then the whole, you know, oh, but we're going back to real life, you know, after just a few minutes. So I love that just as a concept. But yeah, as a song, not a fave.
01:06:05 --> 01:06:35 Yeah, same. This one will be the actual seven. Okay. I'd say I will go 6.5 on this one. Ooh. Yeah. How the turntables have turned. The tables. And to close out the album, we have I've Seen It. And this was done by Bastion Langbeck, Max Wolfgang, Olivia Dean, and Zach Nahome. I've seen it last for 30 years. Seen it bloom and end in tears. Okay. Ooh. Mm-hmm.
01:06:35 --> 01:07:00 We have reached the end. How do we feel about this song being the closer, the other bookend? I mean, it really is giving extended outro, I would say. Hmm. You know, because it's kind of a poem. Oh, my God. Like, there's no real chorus. It's not like a fully, fully fledged song, I would say. Right. It's kind of just a conclusion. Yeah.
01:07:00 --> 01:07:15 to everything. So I think looking at it from that concept, I don't mind it. Yeah. I think. It does feel a little like 90-year-old woman reflecting on her life. You know? Like, oh...
01:07:16 --> 01:07:36 Do you know what I mean? Yeah, my notes say something similar. I don't mean that in a mean way, in a bad way. My notes are similar. Sorry. Like, it's kind of folksy. It's kind of like this, like, woman, like, on her porch, just, like, remembering her life or something. That's in my notes style. Oh, really? Yeah. Um...
01:07:37 --> 01:07:50 Yeah, I don't know. Maybe that's what she was going for. I don't know how old she is. She's like 20. But Olivia just seems very mature. Yeah, because she's like 30 years. And I was like, I don't...
01:07:51 --> 01:08:18 I was like, I don't know about what. Yeah, but it's like someone who's like very, you know, who's lived a long life and has finally come to this realization about love. Yeah. Well, I mean, good for her that she's come to that realization before she's turned 30. Like, that's amazing. I think she's taking the POV of someone who's a little bit older. But I was like, 30 years isn't enough time.
01:08:18 --> 01:08:48 No, girl, you got to be older than that. Yeah. So, yeah, I mean, I think, again, looking at the concept of the album, love in all of its different forms, how even love that ends in heartbreak still has, you know, there was meaning in your life. Yeah. And it was important for you to experience like all that stuff. Like, I think that's this as a way to just kind of wrap it all up. I think it's good. So I think as a project, this as the end does a good job. Will I ever really choose to listen to the song? No.
01:08:48 --> 01:09:05 And you know what? That is so valid. You can be an Olivia Dean fan and still say like, you know what? This wasn't, it closes the albums where it feels cohesive, right? But I don't know who in their 20s, 30s, maybe 20s.
01:09:05 --> 01:09:31 I'll leave my 20s, 30s, even maybe a little bit younger, who would listen to the song. But yeah, I got it all figured out. But like maybe you listen to this song and think, I hope I get to this point. Right. I love the lyrics about seeing it in so many different forms. It sat across me on the two. I've seen it on the playground. I've seen it not try to fall apart. It brings out the worst, the best. I'm not supposed to know it all. So I think it is the love. The love of someone's dog.
01:09:31 --> 01:09:53 The love that a dog has for you is a pure kind of love. And the love that you may have for your goldfish, your mother, your father, your friends. Like, it's all different kinds of love. And I think that is special. And I also have in my notes that this feels like a perfect song for an older person's birthday montage. Like, I just...
01:09:54 --> 01:10:19 I'm so sorry. I'm not trying to be nasty about it. It's just one of those things where I'm like, wow, this sounds very like where where Ray has jazz influences, but has figured out how to give modernity to her melodies and her writing and her lyricism. Olivia is different where hers feels like a Times-Casper.
01:10:19 --> 01:10:40 capsule excuse me her new lyrics feel like a time capsule i think olivia's ability to capture and bottle this emotion where we already like we you and i have already thought in our heads this sounds like an older person song that's as a town all in itself having the sonics and the atmosphere match that where it creates the soundscape of like how old is she
01:10:40 --> 01:10:59 Um, how does she know so much more than I do? And maybe she doesn't, but there's again, that confidence that was there. Um, but yeah, I love the idea that you don't have all the answers, but we can all share it in the best way we know how, right? We all have a way that we love, um, every person in our lives and everything in our lives. Like you're a great plant dad. Me? Yeah.
01:10:59 --> 01:11:27 I kill a plan in a second. I've done it before now on purpose, but it's happened. But this man's house is bountiful. Right. But we all show care in different kinds of way or love, however you want to call it. But yeah, so I think it's very interesting. I think it's a solid ending. Yeah. To the cohesion for like thematic purposes. Yeah. But song wise. Yeah, it's okay. Yeah. Yeah. So for what it is and what it's trying to do, I'll give it a 7.5.
01:11:27 --> 01:11:37 Ooh, I can respect that. I will match you for this Beatlesque butterfly song. Okay. Go ahead, John Lennon. Go ahead, girl.
01:11:38 --> 01:12:05 Okay, so that's the end of The Art of Loving. Definitely let us all know your thoughts in the comments. What did you agree on? What did you not agree on? What did we not know about the songs that we shouldn't know? Oh, yes. Give us all the info. Give us all your thoughts. We're now at our Cutter Keep section. So if you had to cut a song off this album, what would you cut and why? Ren chose something in between. He said it's still a good song, but feels notably weakest across the album.
01:12:05 --> 01:12:26 Yeah, I'm going to agree with that. I think something in between is my cut as well. It's not the strongest. Like I said, I think Dive does a better job and it's a little bit more optimistic as well, but it just does a better job of explaining how confused she feels. It's a great poem, but I don't think it's a strong song.
01:12:27 --> 01:12:50 Yeah, I'll choose a couple minutes. Ooh, get prepared to be drugged. Sorry. I mean, it's great that she got an album track to chart. That's awesome. Yes. Yes. Why not loud people? Come on now. We've all been ghosted. You know what's really sad? Loud has the least amount of streams, not counting the intro, on Spotify. How dare you people?
01:12:50 --> 01:13:17 Yeah. How dare you? We need Kelly to cover it. Oh, my God. You know? Listen, I would hate for her to cover it. Even Tony Braxton was like, girl, don't you cover my songs no more. All right. What song would you keep on this album, though? Ooh. So, Wren's Keep is loud. Ooh. Okay. So, if you already took it and we can't copy him. Right. Not this time. Let's have you a little bit creative, right? I won't choose a single, so I'll choose Close Up.
01:13:18 --> 01:13:36 Oh, interesting. Oh, dang it. I feel like the singles are singles for a reason. I mean, yes. Yeah, I agree. The singles are super strong, which is why I'm just like, let me just choose my favorite of the old bug tracks. But you can choose a single. I would... No, it's okay. I think even though the singles are easy to go for and I already said what I liked, I think Baby Steps might be like one of those songs where you can...
01:13:37 --> 01:14:04 really push it to a certain extent. Yeah. Because if you think about the whole Lizzo, like, um, feeling good as hell, um, kind of like cocoa butter era, this is one of those songs. If it was a little bit more like, you know, like, this is one of those, like, I'll make you feel good about yourself kind of songs. Yeah. But like kind of being flawed without sounding super pathetic. I think this is one of those solid songs for that. So baby steps for me. Okay. Okay.
01:14:04 --> 01:14:21 Nice. Okay, so overall thoughts. What do you think of The Art of Loving? Yeah, The Art of Loving. I do wonder if there are some, I mean, it's not if, there probably is some rooms that were left on the cutting room floor. Because she didn't explore a lot, but I didn't get the love of a friend on this album.
01:14:22 --> 01:14:41 I think that was what was missing for me. She did mention some names in Seen It All. I've seen it, excuse me. She did mention some names. I don't know if those are her friends, but I think it would have been interesting to see how she explores and navigates
01:14:41 --> 01:14:58 a friendship like maybe like friendship heart break friendship breakups are almost harder than your actual like love romantic ones because your friends if you've been friends for a really long time have seen you through the ups and the downs and the downs and the ups and like when you lose that friend for whatever reason it's like dang
01:14:58 --> 01:15:24 Like, who am I going to call when the plane lands? Like, forget the guy. There'll be another guy. Forget the girl. Forget whoever you're dating. There'll be another person. But sometimes it's like, dang, how am I going to find that friend that I had when I was this age that got me through this many years and this many years of, you know, we were together for that long. So I think that would have been a fun exploration for her. Overall, I think this is a solid album in terms of concept.
01:15:24 --> 01:15:34 Um, Messy, I feel like I heard songs that maybe go, ooh, ooh, a little bit more. Yeah. Doesn't mean this album is bad. It's just, I'm...
01:15:34 --> 01:16:00 I'm hoping that as she releases more music, she doesn't just stick with this older sound. I would love to hear her do like a slow rock, have a slow rock moment. Yeah. You know what I'm saying? I mean, look at Adele. How many years did it take for you to be like, I'm going to make a dance album now? I'm like, oh, dang. You know what I'm saying? She shouldn't have to change so much about herself to get to that point. But I am hoping for a little bit more upbeat, a little bit more...
01:16:01 --> 01:16:18 I don't know. Something a lot less analog, I would say. Just give me something. Mm-hmm. But it wasn't bad. It wasn't bad. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I think overall, the reviews have been good. Yeah. I mean, I think as a concept, again, lyrically, I think,
01:16:18 --> 01:16:39 amazing like i think as a songwriting i think the lyrics even if i didn't love the melodies of the songs i think just reading the lyrics are so beautiful yes um and then vocally as well so emotive beautiful tone very pleasing to the ear for sure yeah i think since the whole thing has such a similar vibe yeah
01:16:40 --> 01:17:09 And similar BPM even. Ooh, okay. Or maybe not really similar BPM, but because everything is done in such a chill way, I will admit it did take a lot of effort for me to really actively listen to it because it's kind of one of those albums that you can just kind of have on while you're cleaning, you know, and like doing other things. It's like very easy listening.
01:17:09 --> 01:17:23 and it doesn't really I think lyrically it takes you on a journey but like sonically it's kind of more flat I guess um
01:17:23 --> 01:17:47 So I found myself drifting a little bit throughout it. I think there are for sure standouts on here. But I think listening to it like front to back, it did lose me a few times. Right, right. But I think overall I get why she has become one of the breakout stars of the year. Super talented. I'm excited to see where she goes. Like I said, watching her performances, that's when I was like, oh, okay. Okay.
01:17:47 --> 01:18:11 I get it. She's very captivating live. Even singing the songs I don't love as much, she's very captivating for sure. So, yeah, I'm excited to kind of see how she develops as an artist. And I'm curious. I think she does have a shot at, you know, Best New Artist or all the noms that she has across all the award shows in the world. So, yeah, I think the potential is there for sure. It's just...
01:18:12 --> 01:18:40 I think for me, I tend to listen to more high-energy stuff. So just from a taste perspective, like listening to a full album that's this chill is just not something that I usually do. That's valid. You know what's the crazy thing is? I have a friend that listened to a couple of songs from Olivia Dean. She was like, I had to add it to the playlist, girl. So I sat there, I said, what about my songs? She was like, oh, Shan. Oh, Shan. I'm sorry, Shan. I was like, right. Okay. So yeah, but she loves...
01:18:42 --> 01:19:05 By the way, this is not on my playlist. You know that? I know. Thank you. You're able to tell me your favorite song. This girl can't do that. Anyway, this is not the reason why I gave my scores to Olivia in a certain way. But the point is, my friend is all about, quote unquote, vibes, right? Like, if you listen to her playlist every time we're in the car, she'll talk about how tired she is. She'll still pay R&B. I'm like, babe, we're going to die on this road.
01:19:05 --> 01:19:28 change the music please you know so yeah i get it if you're used to like this kind of style this is right up your alley yeah but you know you and i like to kind of volley between back and forth and you know me i'm not like a sad girly yeah but i think what this what appealed to me was the heart of it all totally yeah so i think for me i was able to really like
01:19:28 --> 01:19:44 quote unquote dive into because of the lyricism and because I can relate to a lot of it. So, because if you guys haven't noticed, I'm a softie of us two. Am I soft? Yeah. Yeah, I'm soft, yeah.
01:19:46 --> 01:20:15 Listen, guys, if you're also soft, you know you can tell us that right in the comments below. Because we're here to talk to you. You're here to talk to us. I can totally see why he did that, y'all.
01:20:18 --> 01:20:43 no i feel like i gave a pretty high score so i will give it i'll give it maybe the eight but i see why you did the 7.5 um but yes like i said olivia dean fans you know if you are sentimental and you want to defend your faith please do in the comments below let us know what you think about the album be civil okay music subjective that's why we love it
