We finally listened to One Direction’s debut album "Up All Night" and we’re breaking it down, track by track. In this episode, Chris and Chantel Nicole give their first-time listen and brutally honest review of the album that launched 1D into global boyband fame. Neither of us were Directioners, so this isn’t a nostalgia trip - it’s a real critique of the production, vocals, lyrics, and pop impact from fresh ears in 2025. Is "Up All Night" a classic of the 2010s boyband boom, or just a moment in time? We talk hits, deep cuts, and everything in between.

So much so where we've actually been
00:00:50 --> 00:01:08 added onto a couple of lists for podcasts. We're like top 30 in some of the lists. And then I saw another list for a K-pop podcast, but we're top, like what, top 10. So that makes me really excited. That makes us super stoked to keep making episodes for you guys. So again, Spotify listeners, we see you and we totally appreciate you guys.
00:01:08 --> 00:01:35 So yes, keep leaving those comments, keep leaving those ratings because people are seeing it, not just us. You know, it just helps out because this channel...
00:01:35 --> 00:02:02 Oh, baby. It helps us grow, guys, when you participate with us. We appreciate you guys so much. That's right. Thank you. So, as Chantel mentioned, we had done a solo debut pop-off of all five One Direction members, and that episode was very well received. And neither of us have really, really dove in to One Direction's Discovery before. I think we're both, you know, we both know the singles. That's maybe about it. Yeah, casuals over here.
00:02:02 --> 00:02:17 We are brand new listeners. So this was our first time listening to the full album. So thank you to our crew member, Hillary, who gave us some background information and some context of some of this as well. Yes. Yes. Are you ready? Let's dive into their debut album.
00:02:17 --> 00:02:38 Woo! Alright, so Up All Night was released in November 2011 in Ireland and the UK and worldwide in 2012. One Direction's debut album, Up All Night, was a massive success and it hit number one in over 15 countries and ended up as the third best-selling album globally in 2012. Wow.
00:02:38 --> 00:03:07 After placing third on the seventh season of The X Factor in 2010, the boys were signed to Simon Cowell's Psycho Records and quickly began work on their album with a lineup of major producers and songwriters. And the hype was real, especially among their overwhelmingly female tween and teen fan base. And with this polished pop sound drawing inspiration from classic boy bands while tapping into the trends of the early 2010s, the album was generally very well received by
00:03:07 --> 00:03:25 critics, but do we agree? These critics. All right. So we will now go track by track and discuss the production, vocal and lyrics and give our ratings for each song. But understand that viewer discretion is advised. Your fave will be criticized.
00:03:25 --> 00:03:50 Yes. So first, before we get into the track by track, we have to discuss the album cover. So we have two different ones because they're both about the same photo, really. Just one's outside and one's inside. So the standard one is the one that's outside and the yearbook special edition. Right. The yearbook special edition. Is the one of them. Group hugging inside. So what do you think of the album cover concept?
00:03:51 --> 00:04:21 You know, it's great to have their faces on the cover. You know, I think it's good because, okay, listen, hear me out. You're used to the K-pop covers. Yes, I know that sounds so crazy. So if you guys are like K-pop fans, you understand my plight. So yeah, it's nice to have all the boys smiling, laughing, joking. But also this, I feel like these album covers are probably what started a lot of these fan fictions that the girls and the fans started writing. Because they seem real chummy. I'm joking. I'm not going to feed into all that crap.
00:04:21 --> 00:04:37 some of the fans were getting very like, oh my gosh. I'm going to be honest. Hillary did talk about, you know, the main ship in the group. I did go down a slight Reddit hole about it just because I was fascinated. This is not something I ever researched before. Oh.
00:04:37 --> 00:05:06 Honestly, I can say Directioners are truly like the beginning of like Stan Twitter. And then, of course, like the army, BTS army. And then there's a lot of Directioners now that probably work in music that totally understand marketing. I'm telling you. But I think it's a good thing to have their faces. They look approachable. They look like boys next door. Nothing about them is screaming like, you can't afford me. I'm too good for you. It's giving very much relatable, obtainable, you know? Yes. So it's cute. Very cute.
00:05:06 --> 00:05:35 It's very cute. It's perfect for their target audience. Also, just to correct myself, it's the souvenir edition. Souvenir, yes. Where they're inside. Yes. The yearbook one is the one where there's like black and white. Yes, it is. But yes, I think the whole group hug thing, it's fun. You know, you want to show, at least pretend that they're friends. You know, you want to at least like show the chemistry there. And yeah, I think you're right. Like they're all wearing very casual clothing. It's just like hoodies and stuff. So it's just like, yeah, they seem very approachable.
00:05:35 --> 00:06:01 Yes, like, you know, perfect for tween girls to fantasize about. Yes, indeed. And write fanfic about, apparently. Is it fanfic, though? Ooh, conspiracy theories. Oh, no. These poor men. Okay, okay. So let's get into the album. So first up, we have What Makes You Beautiful. And this was done by Carl Falk, Rami, and Savan Kotecha. Kotecha?
00:06:01 --> 00:06:27 Kotecha. It's even Kotecha. Yeah. And this song hit number one in several countries and was certified four times platinum in the US, peaking at number four in the Billboard Hot 100 and number one in the UK singles chart. And it won the 2012 Brit Award for British Single of the Year. And Savon has explained that he was inspired to write the song when his wife was having a bad day. And the band knew it was perfect for their first single when they heard it.
00:06:27 --> 00:06:56 And the song had a massive four-month marketing campaign before it even came out, which focused on social media. And the song set a pre-order record for Sony Music at the time. I don't know if that's since been beaten, but it was huge. And the music video was filmed in Malibu, California, and has received over a billion views on YouTube. That's what makes you beautiful. Oh my goodness. Wow. So how do you think What Makes You Beautiful stacks up amongst the boy band greats?
00:06:58 --> 00:07:20 It's the way the Greeks. Because it's included, you know? It's usually included now on the boy band playlists. Which is amazing. I mean, if you think about the trajectory of what happened to boy bands, they're no longer coming from the West. I think pretty much was our last attempt, right? There are a few trying right now, but yeah, no one's really charting or anything. Where are they coming from? Korea and Asia. It's crazy!
00:07:20 --> 00:07:39 I mean, the UK even kind of gave up on the concept, which is bananas, because like, let's be real here. This is a UK boy group that just happened to get really big here in the US. They just happened because there's Blue. There is what? Nine one one. There's so many artists that you and I talk about on the show Westlife that haven't gotten this big. So I think for them, in terms of the zeitgeist of music.
00:07:39 --> 00:07:54 being so big and then being able to capture the sound that was so popular then. Oh, brilliant. This is the song that launched a million hair flips. You know, that little, like, you know, I can't, I can't quite. They all want to, they all want to make sure they get their attention with their hair flips.
00:07:54 --> 00:08:10 Yeah, let's be real here. When you saw Harry Styles with that hair, I was like, wow, look at that thick, luscious locks. So I'm going to start with the obvious, like vocally, you know, they're not going to give you like, wow, vocals. Like, I mean, from what they started with, like X Factor, the development.
00:08:10 --> 00:08:39 It was huge. But I mean, I think if you try to compare them to like at the time, if we think about what was going on at the time and like, are they good enough to be like the Beatles or like Backstreet? That's like criticizing pizza for not being sushi. Right. I mean, in retrospect, we can say, wow, look how much they did. But yeah, I think this group's vocal setup was actually its secret weapon where they don't all sound exactly alike, but they compliment each other. Like Harry has the smokiness. Zayn has like falsetto and the acrobatics because of his inspiration with R&B. Liam was a dependable person.
00:08:39 --> 00:09:03 vocal center. Perfect pop voice. Yep. Come on. And then you have Louis with his slightly nasal kind of like where's the vocal gonna go here? But he kind of held on to the higher harmonies. And then you have Niall who has the bright Boy Next Door tone. So I feel like Niall and Liam were kind of the ones that added that little buffer that like Joey Fatone did in NSYNC. Because if you listen to the harmonies... You mean Louis?
00:09:04 --> 00:09:25 Louis, my bad. Sorry, Louis. Not Liam, sorry. I think if you think about, like, how they help buffer out the harmonies, it makes so much sense. They really smooth out a lot of the tones here between, like, Harry and Zayn and Liam, and this makes a perfect blend. And it was polished enough to kind of trigger this global teenage meltdown. You know? Yeah.
00:09:25 --> 00:09:50 If you really think about it, they did a really good job. Lyrically, this song is so funny because now people are like, wow, they really sat there and said the girl was insecure and they like her because she doesn't know that she's pretty. And I'm like, okay, listen, you can't look at it with that lens. Like, I get it. Lyrically, it is a paradox. Like, she's beautiful because she doesn't know that she is. Like, it's either, like, profound or, like, a low-key riddle. But, like, honestly...
00:09:50 --> 00:10:09 At that time, before like the all about that bass situation was happening, people were insecure as F. Like super insecure. Like there was everything telling you that you weren't cute, that you weren't good enough. Like, you know, and you have this one song and these cute guys are saying, no, you're perfect the way you are. Have you? Oh, but that line, you're insecure is crazy to start with a song.
00:10:10 --> 00:10:38 You're insecure. Don't know what for. Right. Have you seen the edit where it's like you're insecure for like an hour? It's so funny. You start to believe it. I'm joking. But yeah, I think vocally and lyrically, not vocally, but lyrically, the lyrics just crack me up. Like the insecurity makes you like her, but it's not that. It's just more like the humility, the sentiment of you don't have to try so hard to...
00:10:38 --> 00:11:07 Don't worry about it. I think you're great the way you are. I think that's really cute. But yeah, I think vocally it's definitely like Harry's show. And Zayn kind of glides in like a pop falcon kind of coming in here and there. Yeah, with that octave for the second verse. Yeah, exactly. Yeah, I will say vocally, because I did watch some performances kind of from later on in their career as well. They improve and grew so much. I mean, it's hard. You know, they're teenagers here. Their voices aren't fully developed. Yes. They still sound really good. And I agree. I like the dynamic here. But they...
00:11:07 --> 00:11:16 they were still figuring out how to really work with it. I think this entire album, and it kind of sucks like Niall and, and Louie don't get anything in this song really. Um,
00:11:17 --> 00:11:38 But yeah, I much prefer kind of hearing them sing it as they were older because you get a lot, just a lot more grit in it and just a bit more raw. Yeah. But yeah, I think this was so perfect. Like, they were lucky they got this song. Oh, my God. What an amazing debut single. Yeah. And I also love that, you know, this has the Grease Summer Nights album.
00:11:38 --> 00:12:02 kind of reference to it as well and spice girls wannabe did too you know that kind of funkiness um so you know i guess that just works but i love the cowbell that cowbell in the production is amazing that's the best part of the production and yeah the whole pop rock light kind of thing you know that's just perfect that was such a trend at the time in music
00:12:02 --> 00:12:28 And I'm glad they didn't go the really cheesy, cheesy synthy pop that they very easily could have, especially being in the UK. Yeah. Because I think others were definitely doing that. But, you know, for me, I was obviously not the target audience, right, when this came out. You know, I was, you know, in college, you know, older. Like, I was about their same age. I think it was about their same age.
00:12:28 --> 00:12:57 Were you K-popping it? Because I was K-popping it at this point. So I didn't fully leave Western music like you did. Like, I was still listening to Western music while I was getting into K-pop. But One Direction was just too young for me, honestly. Like, they're not age-wise. We were about the same or are about the same. But, you know, they were clearly going for the younger audience and it just wasn't for me. So I just thought the song was very, very cheesy at the time. And I think it was also hard for me to think that they...
00:12:57 --> 00:13:03 You know, teenage boys are not usually very nice. Oh, not at all. So to me, it was just like...
00:13:03 --> 00:13:29 it's just such a clear marketing kind of thing and it didn't feel too authentic. You know what I mean? Yeah. That's valid. But when I look at it from the angle of being like a young girl, I guess, a young person who is insecure, you know, you're going through all these changes in your body and it's just like, there's just a lot going on. You're not comfortable with yourself yet. So having, you know, a bunch of cute boys tell you that,
00:13:29 --> 00:13:46 You're awesome. Yeah. I can see why that works, you know, like that's just perfect, like in terms of marketing. And obviously the song is very catchy as well. It's a great melody. I've grown to appreciate it. It's still not a song I would really choose to listen to, but I can appreciate it.
00:13:46 --> 00:14:07 what it is. Got it. Respect. Respect. What do you think of the video? The video... You know what? I appreciate the whole beachy boy thing that they got going on. I appreciate it. I'll just say that. I think they did a good job of not featuring, like...
00:14:07 --> 00:14:21 I know it's going to sound so strange, but having like drop dead gorgeous little girls in the video, like I know that sounds so weird, but there was a certain kind of look like like an everyday girl. But like she even tell she worked in the industry. Like, I can't explain it, but you can tell when someone's like.
00:14:22 --> 00:14:42 If you're a K-pop fan and you know Katzai, like look at Katzai. Like obviously they fit the aesthetic of now. But those girls like what? Like 1920, like 22. Those are like pretty girls. Like you can't sing to that girl and be like, oh, you're insecure. Ain't nothing insecure about those girls. But like they got like normal looking, not like heavy makeup, just normally dressed girls. Yeah. Yeah.
00:14:42 --> 00:14:57 You know, the whole Ike Harley styling. It was just cute. Nothing crazy. But yeah, I think they did a good job of making them seem young and approachable. And that's so important. Like, they weren't trying to, like, have them singing in the rain. Shirtless. Shirtless. Yeah.
00:14:57 --> 00:15:16 BSB and Instinct, I'm looking at you. Or even take that if you're a UK pop fan. Like, would take that, and they were like, not wearing clothes, but at all. You know? So I think this was... It did a really good job. And the guys were styled the way that they would normally dress, but just, you know...
00:15:16 --> 00:15:31 You can see the personalities, the style represented who they were within the group. They were still really cute and fresh. So I appreciate that. And everyone seemed age appropriate. It wasn't like a 30 year old playing like an 18 year old. That's my point. There we go. That's where I appreciated the simplicity of it.
00:15:32 --> 00:15:49 Yes, and it was effective. I think the five of them each have a very distinct look, actually. Yeah. And you can learn it very quickly, for sure. So they each kind of stand out. All those little moments with those girls, I feel like a young girl.
00:15:49 --> 00:16:18 girl would could very easily picture themselves in those situations like harry just like singing that you know that low chorus at the end like right into her face um you know that was clearly yeah that was clearly so people could be like oh my gosh like imagine sing it to me that yeah so no i think it works for sure i mean it's nothing groundbreaking but i think you know they all have star quality for sure for sure there's a good chemistry there so i think it works
00:16:18 --> 00:16:35 Yes. Okay. In terms of the performances, though, I will say when they first came out, because I did watch The X Factor when they competed. Oh, you did? Yeah, I was watching The British X Factor because I loved all the judges and stuff, Cheryl. Yeah. Especially. But...
00:16:36 --> 00:16:59 You know, I remember not loving them on The X Factor. Because it didn't ever really fully come together. They didn't win, right? Yeah, when you watch... They didn't even win, did they? They got third. They got third, right. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But yeah, when they... Their performances were never amazing. Like, you could feel the potential, I think. But they never really knew what to do with them, like, properly. But, you know, they did...
00:16:59 --> 00:17:17 give them time, like, at the labels, like, really figure it all out. So, again, I think the chemistry was good, but it's just, they're just... Look, they're not dancers, right? They never even tried, really. They were given some awkward formations that they had to get into. The V formation for that bridge. Yeah, the bridge. Um...
00:17:17 --> 00:17:32 But I think it's because they aren't given anything to do, then they're all just kind of like awkward about it. And it's like, I guess we'll just jump here and we'll just like stand here and just like nod and smile. So the first couple performances do leave a little to be desired.
00:17:32 --> 00:17:51 for me but again having watched later performances yeah they learned to to increase that presence quite a lot yes yeah the first few performances though are vocally they're fine like let's be real the song's not like that hard to sing you know but yeah uh yeah the first few performances are a bit rough for me
00:17:51 --> 00:18:11 Oof, that's valid. Yeah, I agree. I think as later on they progressed, they actually had the girls singing the first verse. I said, y'all go off. Like, y'all know the word, sing it. Shout out to Harry Styles, like, kind of rejigging it for one of his performances, like, maybe, like, five years ago, six years ago. He rejigged it, and the fans were like, F your version. I thought that was hilarious, but good for him.
00:18:11 --> 00:18:37 Yeah, I think he did it on, was it just the first solo tour, maybe? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, around that time. That's that, you know, that sign of the times time. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's so funny. All right. So enough with all the critiques of it. What do we score it? Okay, so I will give it an eight. Okay. I think it's a good pop song. Yeah. It's just, again, not for me.
00:18:37 --> 00:19:01 You know, that's valid. Dang it. I'm going to give it a 10. I'm going to give it a 10. Okay. Yeah. Nice. Right at the gate. Up next is Gotta Be You. And this was done by August Rigo and Steve Mack. And this was released as the album's second single in the UK and Ireland in November 2011, picking at number three in both countries.
00:19:05 --> 00:19:28 Okay, so this one is interesting. I don't love this one. You know. I'm going to be honest. I think this is one of my least favorites on this album. Because, and they have way better, like, slower songs on this album as well. So, like, you can't even use the excuse that they just wanted something slower for the winter. Because it's like, you could have chosen all these other ones, you know. Right, right. Um...
00:19:28 --> 00:19:45 Okay, so I guess starting with the production, you know, the Ryan Tedder-esque kind of, like, thing with the really extra strings and the really piercing drums, like, that was very in back then, so I get it. Yeah. I do think, again, you know, it's mainly just Liam, Harry, and Zane here.
00:19:45 --> 00:20:01 Yes. I think they sound good, but I feel like the verses maybe could have been sung more delicately. Oh. I don't know. They're kind of singing at 100, like, the whole time. But then the background is just, like, the really extra strings. So, I don't know. There was kind of, like, a weird...
00:20:01 --> 00:20:21 I don't... I'd soon hear it with a bit more... Like Liam. Emotion, maybe? I don't know. Not Liam. Louis. Louis could have sang it. Oh, yeah. Louis starting off the very first verse. It would have been good. Don't get me wrong. I think they all sound really good still. And the three of them balance each other really well as the lead singers of this group. Because they all kind of have...
00:20:21 --> 00:20:34 It's interesting. They're all actually kind of similar in a way. Like, they all kind of have kind of the same amount of rasp. Yeah. But they just have very different influences, like you had mentioned. So that's kind of where it kind of gives them kind of their nuances there.
00:20:35 --> 00:20:56 uh and zane especially with the soulfulness with the r&b stuff he does emote very well like it feels very genuine and natural whenever he sings yeah the melody of this song is just like the verse is good but the chorus oh god yeah in the back it's gotta be
00:20:57 --> 00:21:11 Yeah. Like, it almost needed extra lines after each U with someone coming in and singing like a line there. You know what I want? Yeah. I just, yeah. I really don't get how this was a single.
00:21:11 --> 00:21:31 You know, can I tell you, I didn't know it was a single, but then again, I wasn't like into them at the time. Yeah. I remember them performing it on X Factor. Really? And being like, really? Oh, that's so whack. Yeah. Oh, Ballads for Christmas, I guess. Everyone wants their Christmas number one. Did it hit number one even? No. No, it didn't. Number three. Yeah. So...
00:21:31 --> 00:21:50 Okay, so, like I said, I didn't know this song had a video until this review. Super casual fan. Sorry, y'all. The song kind of snuck up on me in terms of liking it because I watched the concert before I listened to the whole album. Because I was just like, let me just jump into something really quickly. And that's what I did. Stop All Night Tour?
00:21:50 --> 00:22:06 Yeah, the tour concert. Yeah. So I was like, okay, okay. And they didn't do a bad job of performing it. This one is very, very dramatic. It's a dramatic follow-up to the song Affirming the Girl, like, just previously. I don't know how I feel about it.
00:22:06 --> 00:22:36 Like you're so perfect. You're beautiful. Then love bombing her. Like, I don't know. Um, but yeah, I think Liam does have like a good pop singer voice that leads this group nicely into the, uh, the chorus, the verses, um, Zane and Harry hold down the pre-choruses and choruses with the right kind of rasp and desperation. So the emoting is there. Um, the lyrics definitely scream. I messed up, but I have feelings now, which is, you know, it's, it's touching, but it's impressively on brand for young teenage boys. So, eh, you know,
00:22:36 --> 00:23:00 know my final thoughts is it's okay um it's like a handwritten apology with cologne sprayed on it um it's a bit much but it gets the job done yeah you know just think about it when you're when you're a young boy they write the nose and they spray it a little bit it's like too much you know so that's this is what it is like i messed up i want you now like i guess thanks what did you think of the video
00:23:01 --> 00:23:26 Oh, with the, with the, with the, oh God. Okay. So the video, again, I don't think those girls were the right age. I don't know if those girls are the right age. I remember watching the video and being like, how old is she? How old is she? Girls tend to look a little older when they're in the teenage years, though. I guess. Do you think they were like in their thirties? Maybe. Maybe.
00:23:27 --> 00:23:49 Joking. I'm joking. I'm joking. No tea, no shade. I just remember one of the girls, I was like, her features are quite developed. Like her jaw was cut out already. And I was like, why is her jaw cut right now? She hit puberty early. I guess so. To be a model. But yeah, the video does a good job of, again, presenting them as prep school boys, you know, going to the day-to-day life or hanging out with the girls. This time on a lake.
00:23:49 --> 00:24:16 Yeah, all the hijinks ensue. And it's just, ha, ha, ha, funny. My bike's in the water. I would have beat Harry up. Are you kidding me? My bike's in the water? Are you kidding me? Straight to pound town, but not the one you think, sir. I would have boom, boom, boom in the face. I was going to mess up my dang bike. But, you know, it was cute. It was like, it felt like friends hanging out with each other was maybe some feelings involved. We don't know. So it makes it cute. It makes it, like,
00:24:16 --> 00:24:39 I can imagine a little girl watching the video and be like, they'll get close to my man. Okay. Make sure you give them back. You know what? Zane got close this time. Yeah, this time. I'm going to be honest. I thought this video was kind of boring. It was. Like, it's basically the same concept as what makes you beautiful. But this time it's in the winter. Yes. Yeah. Yeah. Like, I just thought of something a little more interesting here. Yeah.
00:24:40 --> 00:25:06 I don't know. This one's not for me. And I don't think they performed it maybe at all after the first tour. Directioners, feel free to correct me. Correct this, yeah. Yeah, I don't know. This one's one I don't need on this album. Oop, hello. Yeah, I'll give it a 6.5. Okay, that's valid. I give it a 7. I don't hate it. Like I said, it grew up on me a little bit. Okay. Okay.
00:25:06 --> 00:25:29 Moving on to One Thing. This was done by Carl Falk, Rami and Savan Koteca. And this was released as the second single internationally and the third single in the UK and Ireland in January 2012. And the creators have noted that it was originally written as two different songs that were later combined. And the single peaks at number 9 in the UK and number 39 on the Billboard Hot 100.
00:25:33 --> 00:26:01 Mm-hmm. That's what I'm talking about. Let's get it. I mean, this is basically what makes you beautiful, Reloaded. Yeah, that's right. But that's not a complaint. I mean, it's not a complaint. I mean, if you see who wrote on it, it is what it is. Guitar riff is pure bubblegum pop, and the chorus gets tossed in the sky like confetti and then sticks on you like the glitter at the club. It's great. Or at prom. I'm going to say club because it's like prom age, right? It feels like... This feels like one of those if it's not broken, don't fix it formula. Yeah.
00:26:01 --> 00:26:17 You know, like just recreate. Yeah, we recreate it. Like it could have been the lead singles may have, you know, lyrically, it's vague, just like what makes you beautiful. You never know what exactly it is. But here it's like you got that one thing. Thanks for the specificity. It's je ne sais quoi.
00:26:17 --> 00:26:47 Yes. Thank you so much for that specific specificity on that one. I'm okay with that. Me too. And people can apply it to whatever they want. Yes. It's like Beyonce with the thick. You never knew what the thick was, but you just knew it was something important. But yeah, I mean, it's cute. It's sweet. It does what it needs to do. Zayn's vocals soar in the latter half of the song. He is their vocal falcon, as I've mentioned. So I appreciate it for sure. I feel like maybe I'll like it a little bit more than what makes you beautiful. I think
00:26:47 --> 00:27:05 I definitely do In terms of lyricism And like where it went I think I like it A little bit more Yeah So yeah you say You think you do Or you definitely I definitely do Got you got you Yeah Yeah I think that production Is so good I think it is What makes you beautiful Like reloaded Being meaning It's even better So
00:27:05 --> 00:27:28 in every way. Yeah. Like the production is so good. It sounds really clean, like the way they mixed it. Yeah. And again, it's the pop rock light thing. But yeah, the chorus is so satisfying and catchy. And while the lyrics are cheesy, it's not as... It feels at least a little more genuine than What Makes You Beautiful does being sung by teenage boys.
00:27:30 --> 00:27:46 That's just what I think. That's valid. And maybe this is just because my experience of teenage boys is that most of them were horrible people. They were. So then I'm just like, they wouldn't be this nice. But I don't know. I think because the lyrics are, I don't know, the lyrics just feel a little less...
00:27:47 --> 00:28:03 Okay, yeah. So on the nose, I guess. And yeah, vocally, I like how it's mixed as well. You get more layers of the harmonies. You can really hear the group vocals together. Like it's all just mixed a bit more evenly. Like the chorus feels very full. Oh my gosh, yeah.
00:28:03 --> 00:28:31 Yeah, because I feel like what makes you beautiful is mainly just Harry, you know, that you can hear in the studio mix. And finally, we do get Niall and Louis, you know, getting some lines here. They sound really good. And like you said, there is like a boyishness with the two of them. I think the other three just sound a bit older, sound a bit more mature. I think Niall and Louis have like an innocence to their tones that really works with their sound. And just kind of makes the whole sound just a bit more interesting. But yeah, I actually really like this one. Yeah.
00:28:31 --> 00:29:00 You know what? You're bringing up a lot of good points as to why maybe my 10 earlier is I need to bump it down, but it's too late now. Too late. You can give this one a 10 too. I'm going not. Music video. What do you think of the music video? So the video is simple as usual. Again, there's a very low budget thing going on. They were like, listen,
00:29:00 --> 00:29:19 Y'all gonna stand in front of this camera? They didn't need anything. They didn't either. Exactly. They're just so cute. The video is simple. I just remember about this. Remember about this video is looking at Zayn going, wow, he's so cute. Like I've already picked my favorite one. I saw the I saw a little varsity jacket thing he had going on. I was like, that's the one. He's legit. The reason I kept coming back to listen to me now or at the time?
00:29:19 --> 00:29:47 At the time when I was a kid. Oh, okay. He's still quite good looking now, but he's like a bad now and stuff. So he's got his own business going on with his life. But when I was a kid, I was like, wow, he's so cute. Who's that one? So yeah, I remember just them standing and being adorable and charming in front of the bus. That's all I think about is them singing in front of the bus. The double decker bus. Giving that, you know, that London town image for us U.S. girlies. Yeah. So yeah, I think, again, I just think about them standing in front of the steps.
00:29:47 --> 00:29:50 It's not that special of a video.
00:29:50 --> 00:30:19 It's one of those things where it's like they perform well enough for me. Like, okay, I'm captivated as a young person. But like, I think as an older adult, I'm not going to sit and keep watching these young men. Well, you were kind of just right at the target audience. You were in high school, like almost done with high school. So I feel like it kind of like it was perfect. I don't know. Like you were you didn't really work for you at the time. No, it did. No, it did. I'm saying now I look back. I can't. I'm not going to sit here and watch these little boys sitting in front of a bus and happen on the bus. But you didn't become a super fan, though, at the time.
00:30:19 --> 00:30:36 No, I just thought that Zane was cute, so I watched it for him. I was like, oh my god, he's so cute. And then when they were on iCarly, I watched it then. You know what I'm saying? It was one of those things where it worked. It worked. Yeah, yeah. They didn't have to do anything except stand there and be like, hey girl, you got that one thing. I'm like, oh my god, what is it? I don't know. But he says, I got it. So you believe it.
00:30:37 --> 00:31:02 Yeah. I think the music video is effective. At least it's different from the other two. Oh, my God. Okay, that's valid. I like the kind of almost London tourism ad thing that they have. I like the double-decker bus and all the sights and them just like, you know, singing on the street. And all the fans going through as well. I did read that they were kind of trying to show kind of Beatles-esque music.
00:31:02 --> 00:31:27 kind of growth and popularity that they were having and you can kind of feel that like with all the groups of fans that are freaking out about them so i think it was effective yes at least it's more fun for me to watch than the other two to be honest i would say that too like i said the whole like oh my god this is london oh my god they have accents like you know the whole thing yeah the whole test and that um and yeah shout out to them performing it live with their version like i think
00:31:28 --> 00:31:53 um Niall and Louie in that second verse in the pre-hook give the song a different tone you know and then Liam providing harmonies like things like the acoustic performances really show you they've got their blend together and that they actually can sing they're not just like oh yeah as manufactured as they were it wasn't just like well I'm the only one singing and I'm singing all the parts it's like no there's five of us and we are all all we are all singing the parts excuse me so yeah I think it was it was good you can also hear like how tight they got
00:31:53 --> 00:32:10 In terms of like their blend, their chemistry, and like actually checking for each other. So I appreciate this song for sure. Yeah, I actually do have their ladder tours saved, actually. Because I am kind of curious. I did watch, I tried to watch some older, like newer performances compared to this debut period. Just to get a sense of kind of where they went.
00:32:10 --> 00:32:40 But it is kind of amazing that they improved so much just in like the three or four or five years that they were active together. And yeah, I thought the performances were actually really strong. I think everyone has actually always respected them as a vocal group. I think it is the not dancing that I think throws people off because when they think boy band, they think dancing. But they were really more like just a rock band that only one of them plays instruments for. Yeah, I mean. You know? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
00:32:40 --> 00:33:02 Not too complicated to think about. Yeah. All right. So with that being said, I'm going to give this a 10 as well since it is the Reloaded. I wish I could give it a higher score. But yeah, I think I'll give it a 10. It's effective for what it was. Okay. I'll go a 9. I'll go a 9. I think it's tough because I'm looking at this retrospectively. I know where their sound went.
00:33:02 --> 00:33:31 Oh, yeah. And they have some really good singles later on. And so when I think about it, just in the breadth of their discography, it's like, it's not their best. You know what that's so about? So guys, Chris has this amazing, amazing ability to like get the whole breadth of someone's discography and be like, this is my rating because of how good I know they got. Me, I kind of sit here and go, well, this album was good, so 10. You know what I'm saying? Different methods. Exactly. They both are valid. Exactly. Neither one of us are wrong. So however you guys may vote, let us know. And yeah, just keep...
00:33:31 --> 00:34:01 Keep dropping those comments. Let us know how you guys feel about the songs as you're listening as well. And make sure you subscribe. Hello. Yes. You made it this far. Subscribe. All right, moving right along to More Than This. And it was done by Jamie Scott, Paul Meehan, and Brian Rawling. And this was the album's fourth single, released in May 2012. And the group used a live performance taken from the group's Up All Night tour as the music video. And this song actually peaked at 86 on the UK single chart. So not as high as the other ones.
00:34:01 --> 00:34:25 Yeah, but it's the fourth single. It's the download era, you know, so subsequent singles don't matter as much chart wise at this point. This was the weird transition. Oh, yeah. Between physicals and downloads. Ah, we finally got like a ballad ballad. It's got to be he was trying, but it was giving, like you said, that Ryan Tedder. Oh, yeah. This one is so much better. Yeah, this is way better. Oh, yeah.
00:34:26 --> 00:34:45 I love the head voice from Liam at the start. It sounds so good. And it's just we don't get much of that actually on this album. So it's just kind of a nice song that makes the song stand out a little bit more. I think the way Niall and Louis were used in this song are clear standouts. Yeah.
00:34:45 --> 00:35:11 niall on that second verse like with him kind of doing the belt and i think i mentioned he has the innocence to his tone that kind of folksiness yeah and it really works so well here because it does bring a different emotion from what liam kind of tends to do and then louis he almost always sounds like he's on the verge of breaking when he starts to project a bit more yeah and that works so well for like a heartbreak song like that
00:35:11 --> 00:35:25 Yes So I think they It's great to hear them Have them have a Like standout moment Actually Yes In other songs And obviously they use them Much better as they go on But yeah This album They're shafted a little bit
00:35:25 --> 00:35:42 Yeah, the melody of this chorus is so nice here. It's just a good pop chorus. Yeah. The last choruses are so satisfying with all the ad libs and stuff. I will say, and again, Directioners, feel free to chime in. The background vocals on this sound like session singers.
00:35:42 --> 00:35:59 oh my god stop the oohs and like the the kind of like reverb heavy kind of stuff i'm like oh that's not them yeah so that kind of throws me off a little bit because then it feels like they're singing to like a karaoke track a little bit oof that's annoying because then it's like when you watch acoustic performances you actually can see how much nile yes so much better live
00:35:59 --> 00:36:29 Yeah, like they contribute a lot. Honestly, the songs like this made me go, oh my gosh, I feel like maybe have shafted. We shafted Louie a little bit in our solo One Direction review. But I don't think we shafted him. The song just was not playing to his strengths whatsoever. Yeah. But yes, this is the Heartbreak Ballad. The boys go full swoon mode. I feel like there's a little bit of a kind of like a lean into an R&B kind of sensibility here. Like it feels like something that Jesse McCartney or Colby Adonis would have sung, you know?
00:36:29 --> 00:36:58 You know, I was like, oh, Jesse, come on, where you at? In the bridge, our lovely Falcon takes the high notes like he's auditioning for a solo career. Spoiler, he was. And the lyrics, I think they are definitely straight from that sad Tumblr quotes era. Like they were raw and sincere and just melodramatic enough to generate thousands of tweets. Like, I'm broken. Do you hear me? I'm blinded because you're everything I see. Like, oh, my God.
00:36:58 --> 00:37:23 Listen, had I been into them, like really into them when I was younger and not heartbeat by 2 p.m., I probably would have came back and been like, retweet, retweet, retweet. I would have been a directioner had I not gotten to K-pop, I think. I just love boy bands. But yes, I'm also very glad that I was not dating like in elementary to high school because like this song would have crept up on me and become like a favorite because I would have like gone through this and would have been like...
00:37:24 --> 00:37:53 I hope he knows how I feel. It's more than, you know, like the whole, come on, come on. Like a boy singer, like talking about how he wants to be with you and how it doesn't work out. Like, oh my gosh. Like I was such a sucker for a sappy stuff like this when I was younger, for sure. Even now I'm a sucker for it. So I like the song. But yeah, I think live performances with them actually singing is way better than what the album gives them credit for. It's whack. But not bad. I like the song.
00:37:53 --> 00:38:06 Yeah, no, the harmony arrangement on the live performances are so good. Totally. Yeah, like the way they have them kind of come in and out and you have the highs and the lows. It's really well done, actually. So what do you rate this one? What?
00:38:06 --> 00:38:24 I will also give this one a nine. How about you? I'm giving it a nine too. You know, we're starting out strong, Directioners. We're starting out strong. Yeah, and these are the four singles. So let's see if the album tracks keep up. Well, we have the title track, which is Up All Night. And this was done by Matt Squire and Savan Koteca.
00:38:29 --> 00:38:51 Okay, so we go from like, we go from tears to a party mode whiplash. Like it's over. Stop crying, we're up for tears. Let's go to the party. This song feels like peak 2011. Complete with synths, references to Katy Perry. Like it's definitely a sign of the time because right now- The Katy Perry reference really does age it the most, actually.
00:38:51 --> 00:39:13 Because no one's checking for her now. Although the tour kind of looks awesome. I might try to get a last minute ticket to that, honestly. If you saw her at Las Vegas, the play. Okay, her Vegas show was amazing. Yes, it was so silly. It was campus head. It was so good. What she's doing now with her. I just want to see her doing the aerial stuff. I'm here for it. I want to see it too. It's hilarious. Uh-huh.
00:39:13 --> 00:39:39 I mean, not as good as Pink or Beyonce during Sasha Fierce, but we'll take it. But yes, anyway, we get a shouty chorus and it's all of it's begging for dance floor chaos. You know, it's asking for that. Even during the concert, you can see like the visuals. There was like words of during summertime that take place. And one of it was like skinny dipping. And I was like, who is skinny dipping at this age? But then I remember they were like 17, 18 or like 18, 19, 20. These guys were like young college students.
00:39:39 --> 00:40:06 I think young 20s at this point. Yeah, so they were at that age. Me, I was like, oh my God, this is so scandalous. I must have had a whack high school experience because like legit the second verse about them breaking the tables, I suppose that they were dancing on. I guess I had a tame experience. Like when you think of dancing on the tables, I think of like 10 Things I Hate About You. Like my sister used to watch that movie religiously and she used to dance on the table. And I was like, my high school experience was not like that. I was...
00:40:06 --> 00:40:22 listening to k-pop going to the library and going to dance class so i was a loser let's get it um i would say the vocals take a back seat to the chanty chorus and i'm not mad about that because it is a party song it's meant to be kind of fun um i think because of their target audience it was never going to be like a
00:40:22 --> 00:40:49 uh an lnfao track let's be real here you know like but they do have an interesting kind of vibe because they still are very wholesome in terms of like how it sounds it's very bright but they feel like the cool guys in high school that you can actually talk to they might say like oh my god i love your skirt but like that was a fugly skirt when you walk away you know um but these are but this group and the way this song sounds yes they sound cool but they also are
00:40:49 --> 00:41:05 cool to party with. You know what I'm saying? Like, the thing that makes them different is that they want to be up all night with you, specifically. It's like everyone else is getting it on and going all the way, but you're not like any other girl. You're one of their girls, you know?
00:41:05 --> 00:41:21 Wow, look at that analysis. Right? Yeah. The thing about it is, it's an formula. It's like, wow. It's impressive. Yeah, I mean, this song is good, but it does sound like middle school dance song. That's what it does. Okay, maybe high school dance song. No, it does. More middle school. Yes, no LMFAO here.
00:41:21 --> 00:41:48 No Gaga. Oh, just eight. Yeah, it does. There's something very juvenile about it. Yeah. Yeah. I don't mean that in a bad way. It just kind of is how it's written. Yeah. But in the concerts and the Vivo Live and all the performances that I saw, it is fun. Yes. You know, and it's fun to sing along to and scream along to. So it's great for that setting. I do love the little post-chorus chant with the hey as well. Yes, hey.
00:41:48 --> 00:42:17 uh just fun pop writing yes you know and you could tell it wasn't lazy writing either they like thought you know they really did fully form it which is good um i will say zane's line in the second verse about the table breaking yeah uh his execution is just so every time i hear i just want to laugh because he sings it with his like soulful like yeah yeah emotion r&b voice and it's like okay this is maybe not the time for that right but it's just really funny because it's so serious about the table breaking um
00:42:17 --> 00:42:38 Yeah, I like the production of it. You know, again, it's a good mix of the kind of synthy thing with the pop rock influence with like the real drums and the guitars and stuff. So I think it works. I think it was fun. It was a highlight on the tour. Oh, yeah, totally. Yeah. Yes, I agree. Yeah. So what do you give it? I'm going to give this one an eight.
00:42:39 --> 00:42:56 Okay, I'll go slightly higher and do an 8.5. Nice, nice. Yeah. Up next is I Wish, and this was done by Sivan, Koteca, Carl Falk, and Rami. I'm so sorry. The Falk sounds like... I think it's just Falk. Yeah, that's what it sounds like, right. So this one's...
00:43:00 --> 00:43:27 So this one, oh my goodness. How do you feel about this? Because do you like sappy boy group stuff? I do. Yeah. I do love a sappy boy band moment. So I really like this one, actually. The yearning of it is great. It's like such a nice sing-along melody. Yes. It is different from the rest of the album. And again, it does have that innocence as well. I think there's something about...
00:43:27 --> 00:43:55 the innocence of it, even though the lyrics are kind of sad, but it makes it kind of cute. It is cute. So it just adds a different type of dimension because I think if men were singing this, like older men, it wouldn't actually hit the same way, which is weird. You know what I mean? You're right. It would just give you something different. Like it would probably work still and still be a great song, but it would probably be less, I don't know. There's something about the innocence play with the sadness that just gives it something interesting, I guess. Legit, yeah. Yeah.
00:43:55 --> 00:44:20 Yeah. Again, the harmony arrangement here. Very, very nice. Again, I wish they pushed it up in the mix, though, like just in the studio versions, just to give it a bit more power because you do hear it live. It feels so full when you hear the full harmonies and all the boys kind of around closer to being on the same level. Here, it's really just kind of the one lead vocal that's pushed up and you kind of hear in the background. Yeah, yeah. The harmonies and stuff. So, yeah.
00:44:20 --> 00:44:46 That's always a complaint for me. Like, I feel like for some reason, a lot of pop producers, they like to hide the harmonies. And I don't get why. So weird. But yeah, the overall production is great. Like, their A&R, whoever did the executive production of this album and really just made sure all of it sounded cohesive, it did a really good job. Like, having the rock drums and the guitars kind of be the through point for most of it, it kind of falls away near the end of the album. But...
00:44:47 --> 00:45:10 I feel like this song in particular could have very easily been produced in a much more electronic way. But I like what they did with it to make it sound a bit more organic. So I'm here for this one. This one's the highlight for me, actually. Yeah, I agree. I think it's catchy. I like that the guitar, I don't want to call it a guitar riff, but like the notes that they chose on the guitar became kind of the root of the melody. Yeah.
00:45:10 --> 00:45:27 Even when they were singing the verses and the na-na-na-na's coming in. The song is giving sad puppy longing for attention vibes. I wasn't mad at that at all. They're just so cute. I think that's the thing, like you said, because they're young boys with their little wide eyes and floppy hair. It's just like...
00:45:28 --> 00:45:43 it's got a melancholy tone. And I think the gentle acoustic vibes, like you said, it could have gone EDM, but they decided to kind of go for this more stripped back or as stripped back as, you know, yeah. Yeah. You know, yeah.
00:45:43 --> 00:46:07 um again it has the lyrical energy of someone crying at prom because their crush slow dance with someone else but again i'm here for it yes but that's what makes it so cute no no me giving it a read doesn't mean anything bad i'm so sorry direction it's not a bad thing but i just for a sake of humor if you okay if you're new here welcome i like to crack the jokes doesn't mean i don't like the song um but you know i i tend to notice that
00:46:07 --> 00:46:16 the funnier parts of this, the funnier nuances of it. Because it is kind of like, oh, wow. It really is like one of those movie moments where it's like, wow, the guy really likes this girl. She's sitting there.
00:46:17 --> 00:46:38 with someone else and he's like yes and he runs you know that's right and then the best friend the best friend that's nerdy that he always should have gone with was right there all along like this that kind of song you know where she's like why are you crying about her like i've always been here or if you've seen shark tail and the renee zellberg who's fish is like stop tripping over angelina jolie um wow shark tail what a reference
00:46:38 --> 00:47:06 that's what came to mind in terms of like the nerdy girl that gets like the main guy um but yeah vocally it's a tender team effort and for once they let louis sing more than five notes in a row wow amazing i will say during the live performance of this song i was into it i hate that they panned to the audience because there was literally a girl or a woman i'm not sure holding a sign that says point your ear shun in my direction like what the f like are you serious yeah
00:47:06 --> 00:47:31 during this song amazing you know what i'm here for it i would laugh if i was on stage and someone put that up there yeah me too but can you imagine the editors is a sentimental song they're like i was like no she chose her moment you know go off i'm not gonna be a hater but i was like that's gross all right all right so i will go 8.5 i'll give this one an 8.5 i'll bump it up a couple because i like this one a little bit more than the other
00:47:32 --> 00:47:40 Okay. Moving on to Tell Me a Lie, which was done by Shepard Solomon, Tom Meredith, and Kelly Clarkson.
00:47:41 --> 00:48:10 Yes. My fave. I was about to say you love Kelly. I do. I am a Kelly Clark stan. Stop. That's a name. I don't think so, but I like that. That's amazing. I mean, actually, what are Kelly's fans called? Someone tell me. I am one of them. This is true. I always forget fandom names. I get confused. Yeah, fandom names is like whatever. Okay, what do you think? So there is a leak that happened where we now have Kelly's demo available. So we did both take a listen to that as well. So yes, what do you think of Tell Me a Lie? Tell Me a Lie.
00:48:10 --> 00:48:23 what you think tell me a lie um can I just say Kelly Clarkson's amazing because if I had to sit there and record all the parts of a song to just give it away to someone I'd be like why was I here in the studio god dang it
00:48:24 --> 00:48:49 Because that's a waste of a good voice. But also, we do have a Kelly Clarkson Breakaway album review. So definitely check that out. Yes, and we need to do more. We do. We need to do more, Kelly. I need to get more into it. Every time I listen to her, I'm like, wow, you're a goddess. Yeah. But yes, with her having sung and co-written the song, it shows in a good way. It's got the sass and the bite in that early 2000s pop.
00:48:49 --> 00:49:15 punk punch that we like and that we know her for um lyrically it's definitely pleading for comforting lies over plainful truth which is not great life advice but honey it does slap in a chorus form tell me i'm screwed up mess tell me you don't want my kiss tell me everything's wrong with me just don't tell that you're leaving me for someone else i love that because i would hate i would i would hate for you but i was just cheating on you the whole time excuse me right
00:49:16 --> 00:49:39 But yeah, I think because it's her and we know what the demo sounds like, it's like, who's going to hit that big note? And then that's when you bring the Falcon, Mr. Malik himself. And again, he takes it home with the note after he builds the bridge. And even watching cell phone footage from Madison Square Garden, he still hits the note. He's holding on to his diaphragm and giving you the Zane Clarkson treatment, which is great.
00:49:39 --> 00:49:57 I'm so surprised they never talked about it on Kelly's show because literally he was on there like a couple months ago like a year ago they maybe did having gone to her tapings those interviews go for much longer and they cut it down to those like 5 to 10 minute segments oh that would have been so cute but they talked about him living in Pennsylvania and making honey whatever wasn't he sharing his honey though
00:49:57 --> 00:50:14 Yes, a honey sharing his honey. Let's go. Sorry, excuse me. Pardon me or don't. But yeah, I think the boys sound good here. They have punchy vocals, which at this point makes sense. And it fits their tones. Like we've been talking about it. Like, you know, R&B does fit within rock. Yeah.
00:50:14 --> 00:50:37 oh, Harry sings in a very rock-ish kind of style. Liam, he's a pop vocalist. We have Louie, who does sound like a pump-pock vocalist to me. That's just how I... It's like his tone to me sounds like that. We have Niall, who has the folk sound. All of it is guitar derivative musics. So it makes sense. They sound good. I do appreciate that there are some different production sounds in their version compared to Kelly. So it wasn't just like...
00:50:37 --> 00:51:07 you know, complete copy. And I know it probably sounds super strange, but I think that slight switch from that EDM influence or switch, bring it in there, like here and there kind of makes it sound a little bit more masculine. And I know that sounds so weird, but I can listen to Kelly's and I'm like, something about this just feels bright. It's the mix of the vocals. And it's a mix of the instruments that feel very like they feel brighter or just more like feminine. I know it sounds so strange, but they spark a little bit. Is it maybe just also part of, because they changed the key as well? Yeah.
00:51:07 --> 00:51:36 Exactly. The key change, like the certain production elements that just sound a little bit different. Like there's something there. What was it? I cannot remember. There was an instrument that I heard in Kelly's version that I don't hear in theirs or was changed to a different synth. It was like a harpish score. It sounded very like I cannot remember right now, but it was there. The harmonies are also very tight enough to forgive the emotional avoidance that they're singing about. Because I was like, wow, the fact that you don't just let her go. But yeah, everything just sounds really tight and crisp. I appreciate it.
00:51:37 --> 00:51:56 Yes. I mean, obviously, I know this song because I'm going to support anything that Kelly Carson does. But this one, I do actually listen to. I actually like know this one because I did, you know, I want to support Kelly. Yes. You know, of course, I like the boys version. It's not, you know, I'm happy with it. I think, again, I think.
00:51:57 --> 00:52:10 We're going to talk about some of the more EDME songs that show up near the end that I believe were actually from the earlier sessions for One Direction. It sounds like I think the initial idea was to turn them into this more kind of... The wanted.
00:52:11 --> 00:52:29 Yeah, like a young version of The Wanted, maybe, or a male version of The Saturdays kind of thing. Yeah. But I think once they were like, okay, no, you go Rock Pop. Yeah. And who is the queen of Rock Pop? Or one of the queens of Rock Pop? It is Kelly. Especially at that point, because that's what, like, Stronger came out. Yeah. That's, like, this era.
00:52:29 --> 00:52:48 So it makes sense to kind of dig into her demos and kind of see what she has. And I think this works and it is different from the rest of the album, which I think is important. The chorus is very anthemic. And yeah, I think the three leads do a pretty good job kind of emphasizing the frustration in their vocal delivery.
00:52:48 --> 00:53:13 And yeah, the lyrics, you know, I actually find the lyrics pretty intriguing. Like even just the phrase, tell me a lie. It's so counterintuitive. Or not counterintuitive, but it's just like, it's not something anyone would normally say. Right, lie to me! Yeah, so then it makes you just be like, oh, what's the song about? Right, so that kind of makes you just listen to the lyrics and the story a bit more closely. So I think, I think just as a phrase, I think it's interesting.
00:53:14 --> 00:53:31 Yeah, it really is the Kelly Clarkson formula. It's like the very pensive verses and then the explosive chorus. And yeah, Zayn, killing it. Killing it. Yeah. So I'm a little biased about this one because I love Kelly, but I do think it's a decent track. So I will give it a nine.
00:53:31 --> 00:53:59 I'm giving it a, for their feisty side, I'll give it a, I'll match you. I gave it an 8.5, but I think just thinking about the Kelly Clarkson-ness of it and then not actually getting swallowed up by her, I think that deserves a bump. So let's give it a nine. All right, taking it to the next song, Taken. And this was done by Lindy Robbins, Tobey Gad, and the members of One Direction. Do I have to say their names? Y'all know the names. I think they know their names.
00:54:05 --> 00:54:24 Okay, so first off, this one feels kind of like a simple plan song. Stop. Like the angst of it all, you know? Because the way it's sung, it's just like I kind of, it's very elongated, you know? Like each note feels very elongated. So yeah, I'm going to be honest though, this one...
00:54:24 --> 00:54:46 I tend to, I want to skip it. Oops. Like, it feels long. Like, it's a bit fillery. The chorus melody just kind of drags a little bit. I think Harry sounds good on the lead, actually. Like, his execution's very good. Uh-huh. But this one definitely needed some of those extra harmonies and background vocals and stuff to just give it something a little bit more different. Yeah.
00:54:47 --> 00:55:09 Yeah, that's valid. I think the bridge is definitely the best part, though. You know, it definitely takes it to another place. It gets me interested again. But then the chorus comes back around, and I'm like, okay, I'm done. I'm kind of good. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. So this is one that I would definitely replace with one of the bonus tracks, because we will be doing...
00:55:09 --> 00:55:33 an episode focused on the bonus tracks from this era yes and a bunch of them are really good so if you want to hear us talk about them join us on patreon patreon.com slash cctv pops but yes i would have definitely replaced this with a bonus track if i were to choose the album track listing because this one's not not it for me um you know it's so funny too much the simple plan haha
00:55:33 --> 00:56:03 doesn't it yeah yeah yeah tell me i'm not perfect close close it's okay no it lasts forever i'm sorry i can't be there go perfect okay um was that song like i'm made of glass like i'm made of paper it sounds like um skyscraper to me in terms of like the whininess as well um from jimmy lovato the whininess dang
00:56:03 --> 00:56:25 No, don't get me wrong. Okay, here's the thing. Skyscraper needed wine. It needed vulnerability. It needed all of that for it to come across as emotive, right? This, not so much. Like, this tale, this song talks of a tale as old as time. You want what you can't have. I'm dating someone, and now you like me? Meh. I mean, I can't say that I've ever, this has never happened to me, right? And I'm a little afraid.
00:56:25 --> 00:56:45 offended i'm a little offended like am i not worth the toxicity are you kidding me um i'm joking i'm joking i do not want that in my life one goodbye is enough for me but it is a tale that people get it's like wow you only want me because i'm taken right now like really it's so sick of you um i think the lyric i slept on your doorstep is so hysterical
00:56:45 --> 00:57:13 I was like, dang, you're down bad. But this song is like a shame on you for trying to come back now that I'm happy. I appreciate the sass and them calling the girl a beautiful mistake. I like the lyrical growth throughout the song. The pacing of the song is only okay, though. I can't lie. It is dramatic. Like you said, it's a little whiny. And it's deeply sincere, though. I appreciate that. Sure. Sure.
00:57:13 --> 00:57:30 But this was some of the things I remember hearing like people about my age talk about in the day. Like it was relatable. Like, oh, my God, like I'm talking to this other guy. Now he thinks I'm like cute or like, oh, yeah, I dumped her. I feel like honestly, though, I think it still happens now. I feel like it's human nature to want what you don't have.
00:57:30 --> 00:57:53 No, this is true. I just remember being in high school and that being like the biggest drama. It wasn't like, oh, bills or like, oh, you know, I'm hungry. It was like, oh, my God, this guy wants me now. But it was just simpler time, I guess. But yeah, the song is O-Tay-Doh. It's O-Tay-Doh. It's not great. But, you know. Yeah. I'll give it a six. It's not terrible. It's just the worst on this album. Spoiler. Spoiler.
00:57:53 --> 00:58:22 What am I going to cut? Likely this. Okay. Moving on to track nine. We have I Want. And this was done by Tom Fletcher of the group McFly. Richard Biff Stannard, who we love. And Ash Howes, who we also love. Yes. Good writers. Very good writers. And if you guys are not familiar with McFly, I feel like this is a song they were totally saying. I love McFly. Yeah.
00:58:23 --> 00:58:52 Um, so we haven't spoken about them on our show, but, uh, but yes, the stabby piano, I was going to say stabby potato, the stabby piano and the lyrics of an indecisive push and pull relationship or like a push and pull person, I guess. Um, I would say that the guys aren't bad ass enough to completely pull off the whole jaded thing, but, but, but, but I can say, I can acknowledge that they are sweet boys who are fed up and the song has the right, like amount of like F off. Yeah.
00:58:52 --> 00:59:18 You know, without them sounding like they're trying too hard. So I appreciate that. I think the production also adds that too. Because it is that little stabbiness. I do wonder what if Luli was the one singing some of the verses to give it that true pop punk feel. Like, would it be a little different? Like, I don't think it's wrong to say that. Like, his current stuff leans in that direction now. I mean, he carries, and he also carries a chorus. I hear him. He does. So it's good. I mean, good for him. I think...
00:59:18 --> 00:59:46 overall like my favorite part of the song is the bridge melody it's delicious uh the breakdown uh in the song too with the guitar that becomes the sixth member of this group it becomes the official sixth member and i'm like you better go off mr guitar um but yeah i think i think even as the song progresses it's it has a nice uh flow the dynamics are good and then the piano break down with liam singing like me likey this one stands out to me i think um
00:59:46 --> 01:00:16 on the album. This one stands out to me too. I also love that they ended the first tour with it. It's their encore song. Oh yeah! I love that. It's kind of unexpected but it has such a good energy to it and a great way to end the show. Yeah, I think this is cool. First off, just the fact that it's these three writers as well who've written some of my absolute favorite pop songs ever. You know, by Kylie, Tom McKinnon, Spice Girls, you know, these from Biff and Ash, I guess. And I love McFly as well. But uh,
01:00:16 --> 01:00:35 Yeah, I think the verses are cool. It kind of has like an Elton John-ness to it with kind of like a staccato piano. Yeah. You know? And then it turns into just like a fun pop rock moment. And the chorus is so simple, but so catchy. And yeah, I also have the note here. It's great to have Louis actually getting to lead the chorus here. Yeah.
01:00:35 --> 01:01:01 And yeah, the lyrics are fun, too. It's a bit different from the rest of the album. It's quite cheeky. Yes. You know, it's like going back now at these girls and it's like, all I want is your love and you want all these material things. Yes. And it's annoying. Yeah. It's annoying. It's a nasty track for them. Yes. But yeah, you mentioned Zayn. We talk about Zayn a lot and how he's been doing the bridge. He's for sure the bridge king.
01:01:01 --> 01:01:13 Yeah, he's the Michelle Williams of this group. He's the Michelle Williams. He's the Heidi range. Yeah, basically. Because he really does just take everything to another level every time he sings.
01:01:13 --> 01:01:42 like his soulfulness and vocal styling really is just so different from the rest of the group. So it stands out in the best way possible. So yeah, this one is also a standout to me. This is one that I think I look forward to every time it comes around. Yeah, totally. That might also be because it comes after Taken as well. Because it's just like, oh, you know, like it's over. It's like, oh, now something good. Sorry. Sorry, Taken. But yeah, this one's a highlight. I think it's pretty good. I'll give it an 8.5.
01:01:43 --> 01:02:06 That was diabolical. I'll put my score from the 8 to the 8.5 as well. I'll match you in this one. Nice. Yes. Up next is Everything About You. This was done by Steve Robson, Wayne, Hector, and the boys of One Direction. The only direction. What was the direction that they were going in? Up? Into the girls' hearts. Oh.
01:02:11 --> 01:02:38 Okay, so everything about you. So we had mentioned that it kind of gets more EDM towards the end of this album. Yeah, it does. So yeah, I believe they mentioned on the tour, and then I was trying to just like look up information about the album as well, that this was one of the earlier sessions from the earlier sessions. So yeah, it does sound like they were kind of like, oh, I guess we kind of go with the kind of standard kind of pop synthy thing that's going on right now.
01:02:40 --> 01:02:50 I'm very glad they did not ultimately go this way. I will say these songs aren't bad, but compared to some of the other ones on this album, it does feel more generic.
01:02:51 --> 01:03:15 you know yeah like it fits the trend but it could kind of be like any boy band that kind of sings these songs or you just up the pitch and just give it to the saturdays oh but the song was fun live you know that's valid that's the oh yeah it's just interesting i think again i think again because i i listened to all of this retrospectively knowing kind of where their sound went it does just feel so out of place to have them sing this song
01:03:15 --> 01:03:40 Oh, wow. You know. Oh, interesting. But they do sound really good vocally here. I think the mix of the vocals here is really, really good. The bridge is cool, yet again. I like the way the guitars are arranged, like the big drums and stuff. They did add kind of rock elements here to at least kind of keep it sonically closer to kind of the rest of the album, which I appreciate. But yeah, this song is just like okay for me.
01:03:40 --> 01:03:56 that's valid um i think the edm stabby staccato video game moment was it's not terrible on this but it does sound a little bit like a game um and it was written by the members and it doesn't sound bad wow respects was like okay there is something there um
01:03:56 --> 01:04:16 Oh, yeah. I think big time Rush fans would have eaten this up, though. Like if big time Rush would have released it on the show, maybe I say that because it has like this full throttle pop energy that is essentially we literally like everything about you song with so much conviction. You almost believe it. You know, you're just like, wow, you might be BSing me, but you're doing it so well. Yeah.
01:04:16 --> 01:04:36 The production is very background music at a Claire store, though, and I think that's my issue. It doesn't sound like the rest of the album, which is not bad. You always want to try to explore different sounds when you're making an album that's fun. And it's not so strange to be on this album since they do have EDM influences. But it just, again, it just sounds like the music on an episode of a Nickelodeon show. Like...
01:04:36 --> 01:05:01 Maybe Victorious or iCarly, which were both airing around the same time, if I wasn't mistaken. But the chorus is an undeniable earworm. Everyone gets a moment here. But I feel like it's more about the vibes than the vocals, really. It's kind of just like the energy of the song is very, like, fun. There are some good singing on this. And there's lots of harmonies between the fellas. And I think that's what saves it a little bit for me. The harmonies here and there. But, yeah, I think...
01:05:01 --> 01:05:28 this EDM rock version of one thing makes you beautiful, what makes you beautiful, it works for them. The bridge is the coolest part of the song. And I think, Oh, yeah. Yeah, I think this is what I miss about bridges, especially in American or Western music, is like this moment. I mean, you have so many voices in the group. Just do what you're good at. Do what you're good at and keep figuring out how to switch it up. Because literally, just they keep throwing him there and it works. It works. The middle, it belongs to him. Yes.
01:05:30 --> 01:05:49 yeah i'll give this one a 7.5 oh um i was sitting kind of high with this one i'll just give it an eight i'll give it eight okay moving on to same mistakes this was done by steve robson wayne hector and the boys of one direction so the same writers as the last song
01:05:53 --> 01:06:20 But I do like this one more. Yes. I really like the way the chorus is written. Like the repeated words and the conclusion of the same mistakes. I think it's just a good pop chorus. And then the second time around, we get a second part to it as well, which kind of just elevates it even further. This one feels a bit more mature compared to some of the others on the album. Like the chorus does sound like, like the lyrics sound like someone with a bit more lived experience. Yeah.
01:06:21 --> 01:06:42 would maybe write this? Because do teenage boys have enough mistakes to even sing that they are making the same mistakes? Yeah, no, valid. Because literally, it's not the same thing. So that was kind of my only thing, which I was very interested that the five of them co-wrote this song. I'm curious what the contribution was there. Uh-huh, yeah. Because, yeah, I don't know. They just seemed a little young to have...
01:06:42 --> 01:07:02 Same mistakes. I'm crying, yes. Yeah, I love Liam's bridge here. It's very pensive with the way that they did it. But this one's grown a lot on me. Like, this is one that each time it comes around, I'm like, oh, I like this one. Yes, I agree. But everything you said, because I remember this one being like, oh, I can imagine Coldplay singing this or something along the lines of...
01:07:02 --> 01:07:32 that's what i got an older an older man yeah totally that's why i was like oh my gosh but the mature thing i was like i have it in my notes about mature being like the top like the uh an adjective to describe it but i definitely have coldplay written here i was like oh a group like that a band excuse me um the sentiment of this one i like more than the execution to a certain extent i would say um it's moody it's a slow burn introspective lyrics and like a minor
01:07:32 --> 01:07:44 And by mature, not just in like saying that I've made so much mistakes over my life, you know, like I didn't I didn't go to that one tryout that made us lose the game or like, you know, things like that.
01:07:44 --> 01:08:08 We're not talking about those mistakes. But I think the song has less or fewer metaphors involving girls and sunshine. And it highlights an unhealthy, like, on and off relationship with another person. I think the line, that's what crazy is, when it's broken, you say there's nothing to fix, is a little like, oh my god, how serious is this relationship? Which does lean itself to that whole, like...
01:08:08 --> 01:08:37 how old are y'all again um but yeah i'm not mad at that i think i enjoy this one the pulsing synths of the song really build the tension and the piano twinkles through the chorus or throughout the song actually and it makes everything feels more dramatic more higher stakes um this is one of my favorite harmonies in the chorus on this album um the repetitive nature of the chorus makes sense in the light of the meaning of the song like it's really driving home the point you know just repeating the same thing um the melody is interesting though
01:08:37 --> 01:08:49 But like I, but I think, like I said here in my notes, it feels like an older band's approach to a chorus. Like, you know, it's not bad, but it does sound like grown men should be singing this. Yeah.
01:08:50 --> 01:09:17 Right, which is why I wish they performed this on a later tour. I don't think they ever performed this. Again, Directioner sent us a link if they did. I kind of wish they sang this four or five years later. It could have been really good that way. But I like it the way it is now. I still gave it a 9. Oh, come on, 9. I'm going to give this one an 8. It's okay. It's not bad. It's good for what it is, but I think an older band would have been better off singing it.
01:09:18 --> 01:09:40 Track 12 is Save You Tonight, which was done by Porcelain Black, Jimmy Joker, Beat Geek, and Red One. So we've got some new names now. Yeah. Red One. I want to save you, save you, save you tonight. This is part of the whole kind of EDM sessions here. Yeah. So what do you think of this one?
01:09:41 --> 01:09:57 We're back to that upbeat territory. We got Synths and literally a chorus that could power a Disney Channel montage or at least a DCOM film where the nerdy guy friend turns out to be the one for our main heroine all along. You know, like...
01:09:59 --> 01:10:23 I love tropes like that. It's just so like, he was there right under your nose. When? For me, never. But yeah, the lyrics are about rescuing a girl from a bad relationship, which is a peak boy band fantasy fulfillment. I mean, it's like Wattpad, Archive of Our Own, just fanfiction.net written all over it. We love it. Ask me how I know all these, because I, too, was writing fanfiction, but you guys will never know about who. Ha ha.
01:10:23 --> 01:10:44 Ha ha ha. But yeah, it's less about saving the girl, but like less about saving her and more about how good they be at it. You know? Like the sentiment is kind of sweet, but also like really, like it's not like I'm gonna save you because you deserve to be treated better. It's like, I'm gonna do this. I'm gonna be this. I'm so much better than this guy.
01:10:44 --> 01:11:06 Which I can kind of appreciate. Louis and Niall carrying the chorus. Congrats to them. They sound good. The song goes off live, I will say. And shout out to Louis for getting the bridge on this one. Like, finally. Give this guy a moment to shine. You know? Give him a moment. Yes. And he doesn't sound bad. He will later on. He gets more later on, yeah. Yeah. Um...
01:11:07 --> 01:11:23 This definitely feels like a filler. Ashu Boys reject, maybe. I don't know. There's just something so faceless about it. Because there were just so many songs that sounded like this at the time. Yeah. You know? Yeah. Yeah.
01:11:24 --> 01:11:47 It does balance the kind of EDM rock thing pretty well. So I see why they put it on the album. And the chorus does have kind of an anthemic feel to it. Right. I do have the note here. It's nice to hear Louis like very loud in the mix here for the chorus. And I like the harmonies in the chorus as well. Yeah, for some reason, every time this comes on, I'm just like, meh.
01:11:48 --> 01:12:14 Yeah. Yeah. I think vocally they make it a better song than it actually is. Oh, yeah. Because when I was trying to think of like someone else saying it, I was like, okay, like at least with One Direction, like their vocal tones are so good that I think they make it good. But that makes sense. It's one of those types of songs where I wouldn't really ever seek it. I won't ever really choose to be like, oh, my God, I need to listen to the song. But if it comes on shuffle, I won't skip it.
01:12:14 --> 01:12:40 one of those that's nice of you what was your score though because i gave it a seven i'll go a little higher and do a 7.5 okay watch one direction or one direction is going to be like i love that song and sweetheart good for you sorry yeah i think that i think the number six that has a six deserves its six um this one yeah somewhere down the middle of the road
01:12:40 --> 01:13:10 So moving right along to the final song on the standard edition of the album. Remember, we are going to do the bonus track, but that's a Patreon exclusive. So make sure you hop on over to our Patreon at patreon.com slash GCTV Pops so that you can listen to our reviews of those bonus tracks. Our reactions might actually surprise you. But yes, so here we are with Stole My Heart. And it was done by Paul Meehan, Jamie Scott, Alex Guadino, Jason Rooney, and Brian Rawlings.
01:13:10 --> 01:13:38 all right so this song when i heard it i was like did benny blanco produce this i think he did um dynamite right by tayo cruz it sounds like dynamite sounds literally like tayo cruz okay thank you it sounds like dynamite to me um so benny did that one and i've been watching some benny episodes when i heard this i was like benny where were you in the room um but yeah this one is how do i say
01:13:39 --> 01:13:52 My gosh, The Wanted would have eaten this track up. You feel me? Like, they would have eaten this up. Okay? Yes. Also, justice for Nathan Sykes. Kiss me quick, should have gotten more attention. But anyway...
01:13:52 --> 01:14:13 We gotta talk about him. He's finally writing music. He's releasing music again, actually. I'm very excited. Welcome back. I'm also a big fan of Mr. Nathan. Talented man. Yes! If you guys don't know who that is, that was like Ariana Grande's mess around like back in the day. But yeah. I think that was a publicity thing. A publicity thing it was, but it looked so convincing. Oh, totally. Because they were both tiny and could sing their little faces off. It just made sense. Mm-hmm.
01:14:15 --> 01:14:39 He doesn't like the publicity babes and publicity relationships. I think they serve a purpose, you know? But yes, the wanted would have eaten this up. And I mean that in a sense where they were kind of leaning toward the EDM thing. So, like, it makes sense for them to have this kind of song. With the boys of One Direction, it wasn't bad. It serves its purpose, right? Like, I like the gentleness of the vocals and then the buildup.
01:14:40 --> 01:14:58 it's cool cool cool but it doesn't make complete sense on this album i feel like the bonus tracks have better songs um i do appreciate the mixing and like the vocal production with like liam singing the verses they sound so smooth zane has falsettos here and there love that and
01:14:58 --> 01:15:25 It's great, but honestly, I just feel like certain parts feel like, wow, someone discovered autotune plugins and then went to town. Like, for now, for me, it just feels like it's giving more Ibiza, and like, this is the glitter bomb on the album that sounds like, we'll see you guys on tour. And I'm just like, ah, all the other songs kind of already have that built in. Like, they have like that quiet moment, and they explode, but then this one's very much like, yeah, this is going to go off on the tour, guys. And I'm like, oh my god. Yeah.
01:15:26 --> 01:15:41 They didn't even sing it on the tour. Come on. Exactly. Yeah. And also they did not try with the rock elements for this one. No. At least with the other kind of EDM quote unquote tracks. They, they at least put in some guitars there and drums in there. Um,
01:15:41 --> 01:16:08 Yeah, I think the song itself just isn't for them. I think you're right. Like, there are so many artists that this was more suited for. I think Liam sounds great. Don't get me wrong. You mentioned kind of the delicate vocals for the verses. Yeah, love how breathy he is there. Kind of a different tone than what he gives in some of the rest of the album. Yes. And of course, Zayn as well. He helps to bump the song up a point or maybe two because that bridge is great. Yeah.
01:16:08 --> 01:16:36 But yeah, it just it stands out on the album and not in a good way. Like it feels like they were like, OK, we need another track to fill the album. And they were like, we have these couple of EDM ones. Let's just end with a full dance. Right. That's my moment. The highest energy possible. And this is what we had from like the first sessions, I guess. Word. Yeah. So this one's only OK for me. Again, I don't think the song is bad. It just doesn't fit them. But yeah, I'll still give it a seven.
01:16:37 --> 01:17:05 You know, I was sitting at 6.5 slash 7. Yeah. I'll give it a 7. It's not as bad as Taken. So, yes. Okay. Well, before we get on to the bonus tracks for our Patreon producers and crew members, we're now at our Cut or Keep section. Oops. So, this is where we have to choose a song to cut and a song to keep.
01:17:06 --> 01:17:29 And first, we have our crew member, Hillary, who, as the requester of this episode and a true directioner, will also contribute her choices. So, for her keep, we'll have her go first. She actually chose to keep moments, which we haven't talked about. It is a bonus track. She says that you get a chance to hear all five of them. It's a great song. And one of the few...
01:17:30 --> 01:17:47 That you do hear all five from this first era. And it's by Ed Sheeran, who was and is a close friend to Harry and Louis. So if you want to hear our opinion of moments, you'll have to come over to Patreon. Yes, from the Standard album, what would you keep?
01:17:47 --> 01:18:12 I would say I want. I enjoyed I want. It's different. It's kind of sassy. And because they're known for being so sweet, but this one's kind of criticizing someone for being like, I want this. I want that. And it's like, girl, what more do you want than me? And I think I appreciate that sentiment a little bit more than like, because all the other songs are kind of like, I like you. Let's go crazy. Let's go skinny dipping or like my heart's broken. But this one's like, girl, come on now. I like a little sass. I appreciate it.
01:18:13 --> 01:18:40 Yes. Okay, for me, I would keep One Thing, actually. Oh, yeah. Okay. Yeah. I think it's my favorite single off of this album, and I think it just represents this era really, really well. And, like, you know, I mentioned earlier, What Makes You Beautiful is what gets added on to all, like, the boy band greatest hits playlists. I think One Thing, I would replace that with One Thing. I think One Thing is perfect. Yeah. Boy band. Yeah.
01:18:40 --> 01:18:58 Get out, get out, get out of my head. Yeah, okay. Yeah. Yeah. Love it. Okay, and so for the cut, first up we have Hillary, who she chose to cut, Taken. And she says the main reason is because there's no Louis or Niall. Aw, sweetheart. Aw.
01:18:58 --> 01:19:14 She's so cute. For me, I would take out Save You Tonight because I feel like you don't like taking, so I feel like you might actually say that one. If you surprise me, go off. Respect. But I just feel like Save You Tonight just sounds like anyone else could have done it and I think is a little bit...
01:19:16 --> 01:19:39 it's okay yeah it's not great but it's okay yeah okay yes you are correct and i did just spoil it already kind of in the episode because yeah taken yo i'm gonna be honest i yeah my thumb my finger was going for that skip button oh once that bridge is over i'm like so over it oh no the looming finger oh no
01:19:40 --> 01:20:07 That's so funny to me. Okay, so this was our first time listening to One Direction's debut album. What are your overall thoughts and final rating? For them to be the last... Sorry, give me a second. I'm going to say it in a different way so that if we want to cut this, Janelle could do it. For One Direction to have been the last great boy group from the West, because we all know Korea and Asia right now, they're popping out the boys. They're popping the boys out.
01:20:07 --> 01:20:37 But I think for them to have been like the last Western UK, US big boy band, and this should be their first project, Up All Night is a solid piece of work. There are some little bit of discrepancies in terms of like what direction they were going to go in. But I think overall, the singles represent the rock pop sound they were going to go for. And like you mentioned before, they were a band, but they just did not play the instruments. They were there to sing and perform and hit those harmonies and let the band do what they have to do. I think the song is good. Even some of the EDM tracks, I'm like, oh, it's okay.
01:20:37 --> 01:21:07 I don't care too much for like the, you're beautiful. Let's break up. I'm sad. You're beautiful again. I think certain sequencing needs some work. But aside from now, I think it's a solid album. And this album made me go, maybe I missed out a little bit, just jumping to K-pop back in like my early days of high school. Maybe I kind of jumped too soon. But yeah, I like this one. So I'm going to give it, I think with all my scores, it would sit around like an eight. So I give it an eight.
01:21:08 --> 01:21:35 So I think my biggest takeaway, honestly, from this album is how vocally strong they were. Oh, yes. Because I'm more familiar with their later stuff. Okay. Like their later stuff was just more appealing to me. Because again, this whole era, I just felt too old. I was very clearly not the target here. And I think the singles are especially young. I think so. I just never even gave it a shot. Like I was just like, this is not for me.
01:21:35 --> 01:21:50 That's valid. And I remembered how strong they got vocally. And I like, you know, and when you talked about their solo stuff as well, and I listen to some of their solo stuff now. So to listen back to when they were so young, it's amazing how good they already sound. Mm-hmm.
01:21:50 --> 01:22:13 Yeah. And I think though, and you can already hear kind of the development of how they're playing off the vocals and everything. You know, I love boy bands who dance. So I was part of that crowd who was always like, oh, they're boring performers. Like they don't do anything on stage and stuff. And my mind has changed now as I've gotten older. So I'm glad I'm coming kind of coming back to this. There are a bunch of tracks on here that I really like. Yeah.
01:22:13 --> 01:22:33 We are about to talk about the bonus tracks, and I would definitely switch things out, for sure. But otherwise, though, yeah, it is a strong boy band album, for sure. I'll match you with an eight. Oh, snap. Yeah, I used to think they couldn't sing. My bad, y'all.
01:22:34 --> 01:22:53 I've been wrong, proven wrong. I'm proud. I'm happy. I will say if you watch some of their auditions, Harry's audition is actually the funniest one because that audition was rough. But Simon, he felt the potential. Yeah. Yeah. But then deny Tori Kelly, go off. Anyway. Hit or miss.
01:22:53 --> 01:23:07 Alright, so Directioners, what do you all think about this album? And let us know in the comments along with what other albums you'd like to hear us review. Because apparently, we've been missing out. So, we're here now. So, you come here and tell us what we're missing out on.
