Rina Sawayama’s "STFU!" hit like a brick through a window in 2019. Her first single with Dirty Hit swapped the glossy R&B of “Flicker” for full nu-metal rage aimed squarely at the microaggressions Asian people deal with every day. In this clip from our 2021 Rina Sawayama POP 101 episode, Chris and Chan break down the song, the genre whiplash, and that painfully accurate dinner-date scene in the music video.
We get into the Kill Bill and Sandra Oh comments, why the song still feels urgent, and why you need to be in exactly the right mood to press play. Chris gets personal about why the video hit so close to home, and Chan shares a story from Rina’s modeling days that will make you cringe on her behalf.
