Lady Gaga's "Applause" had the hardest job in her whole catalogue, and in this clip Chris and Chantel Nicole give their honest review of whether it actually pulled it off. Following "Just Dance," "Bad Romance," and "Born This Way," this 2013 lead single from "ARTPOP" had to reintroduce Gaga after hip surgery took her off the road, and the argument here is that it's the safest song on her least safe album.
We get into why closing the most experimental record of her career with its most conventional track was a strange call, whether the song still holds up next to those earlier lead singles, and the fact that it has no bridge and probably should have. Plus the performances that made it: the Good Morning America "Wizard of Oz" set with the yellow brick road and the costume changes, and the case that the VMAs have not been fun since Gaga stopped showing up to them.
For the record: "Applause" was rush-released in August 2013 after a leak, peaked at number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100, went to number 1 on Billboard's Dance/Electronic Songs chart, and opened the 2013 VMAs. The writing credits also hide two names nobody clocked at the time, DJ Snake and Tchami.
