[00:00:30] Blonde, brat, and queer. These were the ingredients to make a perfect pop star. Suddenly, overnight success. Now Chappell, Sabrina, and Charlie have dedicated to making box and saving pop music.
[00:00:44] It is time for a pop off between the Summer Pop Girls of 2024. That's Chappell Roan, Sabrina Carpenter, and Charli XCX.
[00:00:57] That's right. And if you're new to Pop Off, this is where we take some songs and we have them battle it out in our song, video, and performance rounds.

[00:01:26] And before we get into our opinions, just a reminder that this is meant for pure fun.
[00:01:32] Please don't take it too seriously. Music is subjective and that's what makes it so fun to talk about.
[00:01:37] So join in and let us know what you think of these songs and these artists and what wins in the categories for you.
[00:01:44] Absolutely. So y'all, these girls have been killing it in the pop world of 2024.
[00:01:50] I mean, there's a bunch of other artists that kind of broke out this summer, but these are the girls that really, really, just not even girls.
[00:01:55] These are the artists that really broke out.
[00:01:57] So let's discuss those breakout songs and have them battle it out in our song, video, and performance rounds.
[00:02:02] And yes, we do know that they have other songs. We all know that.
[00:02:06] But these are the ones that took the summer.
[00:02:07] Bye, Star. Let's get ready to rumble!
[00:02:13] Round one.
[00:02:17] Okay, so the first round is all about the song itself.
[00:02:20] So the production, the hook, the melody, the vocals.
[00:02:24] And we're going to start with player one, which is Chapel Roan with Good Luck Babe.
[00:02:28] And this was done by Chapel Roan, Justin Tranter, and Dan Nigro.
[00:02:33] So, okay, we haven't talked about Chapel on our show yet.
[00:02:37] No.
[00:02:38] So what do you think of, I would say, what it is her kind of breakout hit.
[00:02:42] Good luck, babe.
[00:02:43] Okay, let me say this before the fans get crazy.
[00:02:46] You are Nanny and you hate her.
[00:02:48] I don't hate her.
[00:02:49] What I'm about to say is not reflective of me disliking her as a person, as an artist, or anything like that.
[00:02:54] It's just, sonically speaking, I don't think she's my favorite artist.
[00:02:57] Same thing with Taylor Swift.
[00:02:58] Not like my favorite, but one thing I can appreciate is good song writing.
[00:03:03] Oh my gosh, I've heard the song being covered by even Sabrina Carpenter.
[00:03:06] Oh yeah.
[00:03:07] The melody of the song is good.
[00:03:08] The words are good.
[00:03:10] The lyricism is good.
[00:03:11] The production is good.
[00:03:12] Just for me, I'm not really into it.
[00:03:16] Doesn't mean I hate her.
[00:03:17] Cheerful indifference.
[00:03:18] I can appreciate it, but I don't really care that much.
[00:03:21] That being said, though, that's not going to affect my notes or my choice of winner either.
[00:03:27] This song reminds me of Wham's Last Christmas or Stevie Wonder's Happy Birthday.
[00:03:31] I just called to say a little...
[00:03:36] You know, for those who don't know, you should know that song because Stevie is...
[00:03:39] Wait, but why?
[00:03:40] Because of the instrumental.
[00:03:43] If you have no words, the whole synth of the little...
[00:03:46] Do you have no words, the whole synth of the little...
[00:03:49] Do you have no words, the whole synth of the little...
[00:04:15] I love the strings that play in the verses because she'll sing a certain word or tell a story
[00:04:21] and the music will add to the atmosphere of it as opposed to just being there.
[00:04:25] I'm not sure if that's like a post or like a pre-written thing.
[00:04:30] Like she wrote the song and then they added the strings or if it was already there.
[00:04:33] But I love in that second verse, I forgot what she says, but she says something about the
[00:04:37] relationship kind of turning out a certain way and then the violins go...
[00:04:40] Almost kind of like a sad like womp womp for her.
[00:04:43] It creates a great picture, a sonic to the pictures that she's creating.
[00:04:47] And I love the harmonies in it.
[00:04:49] They're really good.
[00:04:50] It makes the song sound even more full.
[00:04:52] I think my favorite part though overall is the bridge with the drums.
[00:04:56] The transition is so clean and then the vocalizing.
[00:04:59] She sounds ethereal.
[00:05:00] She sounds like...
[00:05:00] She sounds so much older than what she is.
[00:05:02] I'm not saying that you get older and you sound like you can sing better, but she doesn't
[00:05:06] sound like a young 20s.
[00:05:09] She sounds like, you know, like if Sinead O'Connor was sitting there belting out notes,
[00:05:14] like something like that.
[00:05:15] If she was...
[00:05:16] She just has like this whole like singing very strongly, but almost operatically.
[00:05:21] And I like that.
[00:05:22] It's just also her vocalization there is great.
[00:05:25] The bitter tone that she takes in that...
[00:05:27] I don't know if it's bitter, but I'll just say it's bitter.
[00:05:30] Or just kind of like biting tone that she takes in that bridge and that whisper before I told
[00:05:34] you so.
[00:05:35] And then she belts it out.
[00:05:37] Chef's kiss.
[00:05:38] Bone, apple teeth.
[00:05:40] Absolutely amazing to bring a song to such a great climax when it's already so big.
[00:05:46] That's good songwriting.
[00:05:48] That's great songwriting, if anything.
[00:05:50] Because the song's already huge.
[00:05:51] How much bigger can you make it?
[00:05:52] Oh, let me whisper first before I hit this big ass note.
[00:05:55] Let me change my tone in a way that makes you feel like, is she talking to me?
[00:05:58] Oh, she's talking to that chick.
[00:06:01] Okay, got it.
[00:06:02] Like I said, I'm not the hugest fan of her, but it doesn't mean I can't appreciate it.
[00:06:07] It's a greatly written song, for sure.
[00:06:09] For sure.
[00:06:10] Okay.
[00:06:11] I actually love this song.
[00:06:12] So yeah, I probably guess I'll like it more than you do.
[00:06:15] I think this song is amazing and totally worthy of being as big as it is.
[00:06:23] In terms of Chapel as an artist, I will admit I don't actually love most of the album.
[00:06:29] I have tried listening to it quite a few times, and I think it's just not really for me overall.
[00:06:35] But this song is.
[00:06:37] I think it's just because the melody alone is just amazing.
[00:06:41] It's so dynamic.
[00:06:43] The verses start off kind of soft, very conversational, kind of Fleetwood Mac-y almost a little bit.
[00:06:52] And then the way the chorus is, it just takes you up.
[00:06:56] And it's just, I don't know, the melody of it is just so fun.
[00:07:01] And I love that you hear just a completely different tone of hers as well, kind of throughout that.
[00:07:08] And then as the song builds, like you were saying, that frustration builds.
[00:07:12] And then more of the anger kind of comes up.
[00:07:15] Because at first it's just kind of dismissive.
[00:07:17] But then it's like, never mind, I'm mad about it.
[00:07:19] Yeah.
[00:07:20] And so just on the storytelling kind of aspect of it, I think it's absolutely brilliant.
[00:07:24] The ad-libs as well, really, really nice choices.
[00:07:30] Like, there's aren't too many ad-libs.
[00:07:32] So then all of the belts that you do here are all super, super impactful.
[00:07:36] And then production-wise, I think it's really good.
[00:07:39] I appreciate that it's more kind of organic.
[00:07:41] The strings are really beautiful.
[00:07:42] Like, the slides that you were mentioning, the second verse are awesome.
[00:07:45] The vocal layers in the chorus kind of give it an anthemic kind of feel to it.
[00:07:51] Yeah.
[00:07:52] And yeah, I think her whole execution of it is just awesome.
[00:07:55] Like, this song is really hard to sing.
[00:07:57] Yeah.
[00:07:58] Like, we tried it at karaoke one time.
[00:08:01] No, that we did not sound good, you know?
[00:08:04] Well, so yeah, just props to that because we'll get to the live performances later.
[00:08:09] But like, her vocal execution in the studio is so good.
[00:08:12] Yeah.
[00:08:13] She has a very nice pop voice because it is kind of pure.
[00:08:17] But then she is able to emote as well.
[00:08:19] Yes.
[00:08:20] And kind of add that grit when she needs to.
[00:08:23] Yes.
[00:08:23] And actually, my favorite part is actually the very end.
[00:08:26] Because when it changes tempo and changes keys and it all just kind of sounds kind of off.
[00:08:31] Wonky and stuff.
[00:08:32] Yeah.
[00:08:32] Wonky.
[00:08:33] What an awesome way to end a song, right?
[00:08:35] Like, it matches the lyrics.
[00:08:37] It matches the whole vibe of the song.
[00:08:38] Like, it's so creative.
[00:08:40] Mm-hmm.
[00:08:41] Yeah.
[00:08:41] I can't say I'm a huge fan of her whole album.
[00:08:44] But this song, I will keep for sure.
[00:08:46] This will be on the playlist.
[00:08:47] This is on my rap.
[00:08:49] You know, like, it's so good.
[00:08:51] I think it's so good.
[00:08:53] Yes.
[00:08:53] All right.
[00:08:54] Let's move right on to Sabrina Carpenter with Espresso.
[00:08:59] We're not going to do the Espresso.
[00:09:00] We're not making that mistake.
[00:09:01] Oopsie.
[00:09:02] Espresso.
[00:09:04] All right.
[00:09:05] This one is interesting because this also took the summer.
[00:09:09] Like, I forgot when it was released.
[00:09:11] I mean, I would say this is the song of the summer, honestly.
[00:09:14] Right?
[00:09:14] Yeah.
[00:09:14] So, I feel like I heard this.
[00:09:16] It was freaking everywhere.
[00:09:16] I think it came out in April.
[00:09:18] Right.
[00:09:18] Exactly.
[00:09:18] Yeah.
[00:09:19] And the build was a lot more, like, it was a slow climb.
[00:09:22] It just never left.
[00:09:24] With the previous song, I feel like it, for me, kind of came out of nowhere because, like,
[00:09:28] she was on tour as an opener for a couple of shows.
[00:09:30] Right?
[00:09:31] So, I was like, oh, interesting.
[00:09:34] Okay.
[00:09:34] So, when I heard this song, I think I was just coming off of, what was it?
[00:09:38] She had just released.
[00:09:39] What's the other song?
[00:09:40] Nonsense had come out.
[00:09:42] And then Espresso came.
[00:09:43] And I was like, okay.
[00:09:45] A little Feather.
[00:09:45] Feather.
[00:09:46] I liked Feather.
[00:09:47] I thought Feather was fun.
[00:09:48] It's kind of like in her wheelhouse to kind of sing with this, like, airy vocal kind of thing.
[00:09:53] But this was the most, like, I'm trying to make a summer single that I felt that I heard from her.
[00:09:58] So, I like the summery, beachy sounds.
[00:10:01] It sounds like something to play at a yacht party or any party.
[00:10:05] Rooftop party.
[00:10:05] I feel like the song was on every rooftop party that I got invited to for, like, my influencer stuff.
[00:10:10] Like, oh, my gosh.
[00:10:13] I will say that Espresso as a title.
[00:10:16] It rolls off the tongue.
[00:10:17] It's such a sultry word.
[00:10:18] And it's not even meant to be.
[00:10:19] Kind of good.
[00:10:20] Espresso.
[00:10:21] Espresso.
[00:10:22] There's so many S's in it.
[00:10:23] It's just very sultry.
[00:10:25] Think about it.
[00:10:26] Espresso.
[00:10:27] There's nothing about it is harsh in between.
[00:10:30] Like, you can say hickory-dickory-dock.
[00:10:32] It's just tic-tic-tic-tic-tic sounds.
[00:10:35] It's just so-so sounds.
[00:10:38] So, it's just a fun little play keeping someone up all night.
[00:10:40] There's a lot of just wittiness in it.
[00:10:42] I think I listened to her album.
[00:10:45] And although I wouldn't say she has a sound per se, she does have a voice.
[00:10:51] She and her co-writers have a great deal of humor and wit.
[00:10:56] And this song has that.
[00:10:57] Like, her give-a-dangs are on vacation.
[00:11:00] She's working late because she's a singer.
[00:11:03] Things like that stood out to people more than the chorus did, which I think is interesting.
[00:11:09] But yeah, that sticks out.
[00:11:10] She's quiet.
[00:11:11] She's cheeky.
[00:11:12] The vocals aren't super belty here.
[00:11:15] She can.
[00:11:20] But, like, she knows how to make you remember a song.
[00:11:22] And I think that's also important.
[00:11:24] Like, yes, someone can belt their face off, but it's also important to make people remember what the heck you're saying.
[00:11:28] And very rarely do people ever remember verse lines.
[00:11:31] I don't know what that is.
[00:11:33] Obviously, the chorus is meant to be a hook.
[00:11:34] It's a hook.
[00:11:35] But she made people remember their verses.
[00:11:37] I think there's some harmonies here and there that really elevate the airiness of her vocals, which is good.
[00:11:41] Because otherwise, it would just sound really kind of just bare and kind of, like, superficial.
[00:11:45] Like, a girl, like, em.
[00:11:47] Like, superficial is the word.
[00:11:49] Like, shallow.
[00:11:50] It would have sounded shallow without the harmonies.
[00:11:52] I am on the fence about whether the song really needs a bridge, though.
[00:11:56] I do wonder where the instrumentals and the vocals would have gone had she really given us one.
[00:12:00] Like, really kind of just, like, explain why she's so espresso-y.
[00:12:05] You know?
[00:12:05] Yeah.
[00:12:06] Like, you know?
[00:12:07] Yeah.
[00:12:07] Kind of just shy of, like, what could have been.
[00:12:10] But I'm not mad without it.
[00:12:12] You know?
[00:12:12] No matter at all.
[00:12:13] Yes.
[00:12:14] Well, first, I do want to shout out the writers.
[00:12:16] Sabrina Carpenter, Julian Bunetta, Amy Allen, Steph Jones.
[00:12:21] Yeah.
[00:12:22] I really like espresso.
[00:12:24] So, I think it's just, it is an undeniably catchy melody.
[00:12:31] Like, it is one of those songs where you hear it once and you can kind of sing along to it.
[00:12:36] Or melodically, you can kind of remember it.
[00:12:38] So, that's great pop writing already right there.
[00:12:41] But yeah, I appreciate the whole kind of just feel of it.
[00:12:44] Like, there's something so slinky and sultry about it.
[00:12:48] And it does feel kind of insomniatic.
[00:12:52] Okay.
[00:12:53] Yeah.
[00:12:53] Insomniatic.
[00:12:54] Yeah.
[00:12:56] You know?
[00:12:57] Because there is, like, a sleepiness to it.
[00:12:59] There's, like, an ethereal-ness to it where it's just kind of dreamy.
[00:13:03] Mm.
[00:13:04] Which I think is awesome.
[00:13:06] And a lot of that feeling does come from her vocals.
[00:13:08] Yeah.
[00:13:09] The way that they processed it.
[00:13:10] Like, she has a really nice kind of breathy tone.
[00:13:15] Yeah.
[00:13:15] Because there's a thickness to it and a kind of a slight husk there as well.
[00:13:18] Which is just nice to listen to.
[00:13:20] Mm-hmm.
[00:13:20] And then they added all that reverb on there, too.
[00:13:23] To kind of add to that dreaminess.
[00:13:25] And although, even the way the backing vocals and stuff are layered, it kind of feels like that, too.
[00:13:28] It's like these, like, angels that are, like, singing along to it.
[00:13:32] Yeah.
[00:13:33] And then with the backing track, there's, like, a funkiness to it that I really enjoy.
[00:13:38] The bass line is heavy.
[00:13:39] I like the way the synths come in at kind of choice times.
[00:13:42] Yeah.
[00:13:43] And then, you know, as we get into the performance and stuff, the way the live bands have interpreted,
[00:13:46] that have been really, really fun as well.
[00:13:48] Mm-hmm.
[00:13:48] But I do also have the same note about the bridge.
[00:13:51] I do think everything could have been kicked up one more little level.
[00:13:55] Her ad-libs near the end, like, for that final chorus are pretty good.
[00:13:59] So it does feel like the song is climaxing.
[00:14:02] Yeah.
[00:14:03] For sure.
[00:14:04] But, yeah, I don't know.
[00:14:05] I feel like you could have done something interesting with the bridge with this one.
[00:14:09] Yeah.
[00:14:09] Oh, it's tough.
[00:14:11] It's tough.
[00:14:12] What can you do?
[00:14:13] Yeah.
[00:14:13] But this is another one.
[00:14:14] I don't get sick of this one.
[00:14:16] And I've heard it thousands of times.
[00:14:17] Yeah, same.
[00:14:18] I choreographed to it when I had my heels class.
[00:14:21] The girls requested this.
[00:14:22] And I was, yeah.
[00:14:23] So, yeah, it's a fun one.
[00:14:24] It's a fun one for sure.
[00:14:25] Yeah.
[00:14:26] All right.
[00:14:26] So we're taking it on to our last hit, which is Charlie XCX with 360.
[00:14:31] And this was done by Charlie, A.G. Cook, Finkeen, Circuit, Blake Slatkin, and Omer Fedi.
[00:14:38] Fedi.
[00:14:39] Maybe Fedi.
[00:14:41] All right.
[00:14:41] All right.
[00:14:42] This one, we've gone from full belt, floaty vocals to this processed, cool, edgy, cold
[00:14:51] layered vocal.
[00:14:55] Lyric, lyricism in this song is also another one that's just like, Charlie's always been
[00:15:00] good.
[00:15:00] She's always been here.
[00:15:02] Some people only know her from Boom Clap, which blows my damn mind.
[00:15:04] But it happens, you know?
[00:15:06] Yeah.
[00:15:07] Or the I Love It song with Icona Pop.
[00:15:11] Oh, my gosh.
[00:15:12] Wow.
[00:15:12] Throwback.
[00:15:13] Right?
[00:15:14] So, I mean, her legacy is undefeated.
[00:15:17] No, undebated.
[00:15:18] Excuse me what she says.
[00:15:19] Undebated.
[00:15:20] Legacy, undebated.
[00:15:21] And it's true.
[00:15:21] She's often duplicated or cited as an influence for a lot of people.
[00:15:26] And this song says all of that.
[00:15:28] And I really appreciate it.
[00:15:29] But it's almost like the lyricism is almost so serious that it's like she's not taking
[00:15:35] herself seriously.
[00:15:36] But like if you took it the wrong way, it's because you're probably copying her.
[00:15:39] You know what I'm saying?
[00:15:40] Like if you're offended, then you're the target audience.
[00:15:44] You know what I'm saying?
[00:15:44] Like I feel like this, if you're that girl, if you feel like you're that girl, this song
[00:15:51] resonates with you on a cellular level.
[00:15:53] And I mean, this song is a, it's simple.
[00:15:56] Like nothing about it is like super like, oh, here's an ad lib and here's this and here's
[00:16:01] that.
[00:16:02] It's all about the pulse of the beat.
[00:16:04] It's all about the electronics, electronic synths in the, in the, just the punchiness
[00:16:10] of her delivery and not so much like this big grandiose display of talent.
[00:16:17] Cause we all know she can make noise.
[00:16:18] She can make like the whole noise music.
[00:16:19] She can do it.
[00:16:20] But this one was more just like, cool.
[00:16:23] There's vocal layering.
[00:16:23] She sounds like robotic.
[00:16:25] She sounds unreal, which also adds to the whole it girl thing of it.
[00:16:31] You know, the three 60, like the, I like the title of it to the number.
[00:16:35] I'm like, where is she going to go with this?
[00:16:36] The chorus referencing Julia Fox for me.
[00:16:39] I was like, who the heck is this woman?
[00:16:42] Before uncut gems?
[00:16:44] Like I, that's all I know her for.
[00:16:46] But apparently she's been making waves for years in fashion and apparently literature.
[00:16:52] And that's the whole thing.
[00:16:53] If you didn't know who Charlie was before this summer, everyone else who did, did.
[00:17:00] Yes.
[00:17:00] And you're lame for not knowing.
[00:17:02] Like, that's what this song is about.
[00:17:04] And I was just like, oh my God, this is crazy.
[00:17:06] So I think for this song to kind of be like what she uses as like the big song, because
[00:17:11] she does have other songs.
[00:17:11] I think they're pretty good.
[00:17:13] But yeah, this is not, in my opinion, her best song.
[00:17:15] The stuff that she did with Sophie, like Vroom Vroom.
[00:17:17] She did 3 a.m.
[00:17:18] I love 3 a.m.
[00:17:19] It's super simple.
[00:17:19] Nothing crazy.
[00:17:20] Number one, Angels.
[00:17:21] One of like my favorites by hers.
[00:17:23] And mixtapes, not a full album.
[00:17:24] But we enjoy it.
[00:17:26] She has better songs, but this is the one where she's actually being like, I'm that
[00:17:30] girl.
[00:17:30] And now you know that I'm that girl.
[00:17:33] And don't you feel dumb for not knowing.
[00:17:34] And I love that for her.
[00:17:35] And I love the whole vibe for it.
[00:17:37] You know?
[00:17:38] But is it a strong song?
[00:17:40] Yeah, I appreciate the message of the song.
[00:17:42] Yeah.
[00:17:42] But I will say this whole brat era is just not for me.
[00:17:46] I think.
[00:17:47] You're not brat, Chris?
[00:17:49] I'm not.
[00:17:50] You're not brat?
[00:17:51] I'm not.
[00:17:52] I guess I'm not.
[00:17:52] I love that for you.
[00:17:53] I love that for you.
[00:17:54] I guess I'm not.
[00:17:55] Because I just.
[00:17:57] It's just not very melodic.
[00:17:59] I think that's what it is.
[00:18:00] I think that's my favorite thing about pop music, right?
[00:18:03] Is when it's like fun to sing along to.
[00:18:06] And there's like a lot to a melody.
[00:18:08] And that comes with me growing up with like the divas, right?
[00:18:11] And so I kind of.
[00:18:12] And this makes me sound so old.
[00:18:14] But like the way that these songs are like.
[00:18:17] I just don't really get it.
[00:18:19] Like I get it in terms of like the whole vibe or whatever.
[00:18:23] But like I never want to listen to it.
[00:18:26] Like it's just.
[00:18:26] It's just not for me.
[00:18:28] Yeah.
[00:18:28] I have that in my notes.
[00:18:29] It's about the feeling more than it is about the melody.
[00:18:31] Exactly.
[00:18:31] Like I.
[00:18:31] Yeah.
[00:18:32] Exactly.
[00:18:32] It's more about the whole feeling of it.
[00:18:34] The whole vibe of it.
[00:18:35] More than it is like any specific parts of the song itself.
[00:18:40] I think the production is cool in a sense.
[00:18:42] Because it's so simple.
[00:18:44] Like there's a very clear synth line.
[00:18:46] A very basic beat.
[00:18:47] And there's kind of just all these little.
[00:18:48] Little synths that kind of come in and out.
[00:18:50] But there's just a lot of space in there.
[00:18:52] So.
[00:18:54] I think that's kind of cool actually as a choice.
[00:18:57] But again just melodically.
[00:18:58] It's just.
[00:18:59] There's no real melody.
[00:19:00] Like you might have a couple little hooks here and there.
[00:19:03] But it just feels.
[00:19:05] I don't know.
[00:19:07] There's just not much to it.
[00:19:08] And it's like.
[00:19:10] I get that again the whole vibe is that you're kind of just emotionless.
[00:19:13] And it's just like I'm that girl.
[00:19:15] Yeah.
[00:19:17] This is.
[00:19:17] Yeah.
[00:19:18] This just doesn't capture my attention.
[00:19:19] This just isn't the type of pop music that I tend to listen to.
[00:19:22] That's all right.
[00:19:23] And it just doesn't go anywhere.
[00:19:25] Really.
[00:19:26] Like it's kind of.
[00:19:27] It just kind of stays where it's at.
[00:19:28] Kind of the whole time.
[00:19:30] That's super valid.
[00:19:31] I think unfortunately this is one of her songs that got big.
[00:19:35] When it's not even one of her better songs.
[00:19:37] Like a crossword discography or even on this album.
[00:19:39] So it's just the one that popped.
[00:19:41] I guess it's just the timing of everything.
[00:19:43] Because like you said.
[00:19:43] Pop is in this era now where it's like.
[00:19:45] You talk really cold.
[00:19:47] And your delivery is like.
[00:19:48] This is a freaking hit.
[00:19:50] This is a hit.
[00:19:51] Hit.
[00:19:51] Hit it.
[00:19:52] Hit it.
[00:19:52] Hit it in the night.
[00:19:53] You know what I'm saying?
[00:19:54] I'm just like okay fine.
[00:19:55] Again.
[00:19:55] We have this discussion before we have time.
[00:19:57] Maybe I'm trying too hard with my music.
[00:20:01] That'd be cooler.
[00:20:02] But yeah.
[00:20:03] So who.
[00:20:04] Which cool pop girl.
[00:20:06] Takes this round for you.
[00:20:08] For the song round.
[00:20:09] Oh this is actually really hard.
[00:20:10] Because I actually really like.
[00:20:11] Both Good Luck Babe and Espresso.
[00:20:14] But.
[00:20:15] I actually will give it to Chapel.
[00:20:17] I think Good Luck Babe is so good.
[00:20:18] And I do think it's timeless actually.
[00:20:20] Like I think this will be one that we look back on.
[00:20:22] Even if her career doesn't have like a ton of longevity.
[00:20:26] For whatever reason.
[00:20:27] That may occur.
[00:20:28] Yeah.
[00:20:28] I think this song will be remembered.
[00:20:31] Because it's that good.
[00:20:33] Okay.
[00:20:34] I'm going to give it to Sabrina.
[00:20:36] For Espresso.
[00:20:37] I think also because the song is so chill.
[00:20:39] It was everywhere.
[00:20:40] And I didn't get sick of it.
[00:20:41] I'm still not sick of it.
[00:20:43] Yeah.
[00:20:43] I'm still not sick of it.
[00:20:43] Yeah.
[00:20:44] No.
[00:20:44] Whatever they put in this Espresso thing.
[00:20:47] It's in there.
[00:20:49] Okay.
[00:20:50] All right.
[00:20:50] Moving on to round two.
[00:20:51] Where we talk about the music video.
[00:20:54] So.
[00:20:55] Round two.
[00:20:58] Player one.
[00:20:59] Chapel is disqualified.
[00:21:01] Because there is no music video for Good Luck Babe.
[00:21:03] Yeah.
[00:21:03] There's only a lyric video.
[00:21:05] Which we're not going to count here.
[00:21:07] And just for some context.
[00:21:09] She did say that her label did want her to film a music video.
[00:21:13] But she was too tired.
[00:21:16] So.
[00:21:17] Yeah.
[00:21:17] So let's move straight on to player two.
[00:21:20] Sorry.
[00:21:21] Sabrina Carpenter.
[00:21:22] Espresso.
[00:21:23] What do you think of her video?
[00:21:25] Okay.
[00:21:25] This video is funny.
[00:21:26] I think.
[00:21:28] This one was done by David Myers.
[00:21:30] David Myers has been making music videos since we've been kids.
[00:21:33] Like this man has been.
[00:21:35] He's been out here.
[00:21:36] And of course.
[00:21:37] He made a beautiful video.
[00:21:39] I love the color palette of this video.
[00:21:42] Whatever LUT that they were using.
[00:21:44] Whatever color grading.
[00:21:45] Whatever color grading the colorist did.
[00:21:47] Did a great job.
[00:21:48] It's so warm.
[00:21:49] Yes.
[00:21:50] It's so vintage.
[00:21:51] It's just really pretty.
[00:21:52] Um.
[00:21:53] The video is so silly.
[00:21:54] You have Sabrina.
[00:21:54] Sabrina.
[00:21:55] Like robbing this guy that she's trying to seduce.
[00:21:57] And she's just having a gay old town with his money on the beach.
[00:22:00] With the other girls.
[00:22:01] They look beautiful.
[00:22:02] They look innocent.
[00:22:03] And then meanwhile.
[00:22:04] She's this old Hollywood.
[00:22:07] Like femme fatale.
[00:22:08] A.K.A.
[00:22:08] The scammer.
[00:22:09] You know.
[00:22:10] It's funny.
[00:22:11] It's funny.
[00:22:12] It's not too serious.
[00:22:14] Like it reminded me of something that Marilyn Monroe would have acted in back in the day.
[00:22:17] Like it was just so silly where it's like there's the beach.
[00:22:19] The beach antics ensue when she hits the beach.
[00:22:22] Like she's so beautiful.
[00:22:24] There to cause trouble.
[00:22:25] Something goes wrong.
[00:22:26] You know.
[00:22:27] And I appreciate certain.
[00:22:29] It takes a lot apparently for artists to figure out what their visual identity is.
[00:22:35] But once she did.
[00:22:37] She has.
[00:22:37] We all think blonde hair.
[00:22:39] Big puffy boots.
[00:22:40] And the Polly Pocket outfits.
[00:22:41] We all think that.
[00:22:42] But they were able to put it in the music video.
[00:22:44] And still have it kind of be like fun.
[00:22:49] And not so like caricature.
[00:22:51] Like I believe her when she bends over with her little parasol.
[00:22:54] Because she's a hot chick wearing these outfits.
[00:22:56] Like I believe it when she does that.
[00:22:58] I believe that she would take somebody's wallet because of her humor.
[00:23:01] I believe that she would push the guy off a yacht.
[00:23:03] I believe that this girl would get arrested for something silly.
[00:23:06] Because that's silly.
[00:23:06] You're on the beach of like public drunkenness.
[00:23:08] Or public stealing.
[00:23:09] Either way.
[00:23:10] It just feels fun.
[00:23:11] And not so serious.
[00:23:13] And she does that in her lyrics.
[00:23:15] She does that with her music.
[00:23:16] The song is not.
[00:23:18] Not that serious at all.
[00:23:20] At all.
[00:23:21] There's no.
[00:23:21] There's no emotional stake in this song.
[00:23:24] Like with Good Luck Babe.
[00:23:25] Right.
[00:23:25] Which I.
[00:23:26] Which is why I wish we would have got a music video.
[00:23:27] Because.
[00:23:28] Who knows what she could have done with it.
[00:23:30] Especially.
[00:23:31] You know.
[00:23:31] It sucks.
[00:23:32] So.
[00:23:32] I do appreciate this video.
[00:23:34] It's super cute.
[00:23:35] I had a good time watching it.
[00:23:36] Yes.
[00:23:37] But yeah.
[00:23:38] Go ahead.
[00:23:39] Bombshell.
[00:23:39] Do your thing.
[00:23:40] Yeah.
[00:23:41] I mean.
[00:23:41] It was just the perfect summer music video.
[00:23:44] Like they knew what they were doing.
[00:23:46] But they knew this had so much potential.
[00:23:47] And yeah.
[00:23:48] They did a really good job with that.
[00:23:49] I'm really into the whole kind of retro.
[00:23:52] Aesthetic.
[00:23:52] That she's been having with this era as well.
[00:23:54] Because it does work for her.
[00:23:56] Because she does look.
[00:23:57] Very classic.
[00:23:59] Old American.
[00:24:00] Yeah.
[00:24:01] You know.
[00:24:01] Bombshell.
[00:24:02] Like that is very.
[00:24:03] Much her.
[00:24:03] Just natural look.
[00:24:05] So it's.
[00:24:06] It was a great job.
[00:24:07] Like on.
[00:24:07] On just the branding side of things.
[00:24:09] To kind of have that aesthetic here.
[00:24:11] And yeah.
[00:24:11] I agree with you.
[00:24:12] I think the story is just really fun to follow along with.
[00:24:14] She's not overacting in any of it.
[00:24:16] Like it all does just feel very silly.
[00:24:19] And campy.
[00:24:21] And there's some really great memorable scenes.
[00:24:23] Like I love her on top of the surfboard.
[00:24:24] That all the boys are holding up.
[00:24:26] Oh yes.
[00:24:27] All the little choreography moments of her.
[00:24:29] You know.
[00:24:30] Of them just laying on the beach.
[00:24:31] With her and her friends.
[00:24:32] And just them doing the ripples.
[00:24:34] You know.
[00:24:34] Of them turning around.
[00:24:35] Or kicking up and stuff.
[00:24:36] At different times.
[00:24:37] And stuff.
[00:24:38] And even just her sitting in the hot tub car thing.
[00:24:42] Like just some really cute scenes.
[00:24:44] That feel very simple.
[00:24:46] That way.
[00:24:47] And are iconic.
[00:24:48] Because they're like very memorable.
[00:24:50] So yeah.
[00:24:50] Just super fun pop video.
[00:24:52] And she is definitely a star.
[00:24:54] Like she definitely has the X Factor.
[00:24:56] For sure.
[00:24:57] Mm-hmm.
[00:24:57] Yeah.
[00:24:58] All right.
[00:24:59] Speaking of X.
[00:25:00] On the draw.
[00:25:00] XZX with 360.
[00:25:07] That's the melody.
[00:25:09] Yeah.
[00:25:10] Sure.
[00:25:11] Oh.
[00:25:12] Okay.
[00:25:13] So.
[00:25:14] This one definitely makes fun of the fans.
[00:25:16] Same.
[00:25:17] The internet fame.
[00:25:18] Yes.
[00:25:18] Has all the internet it girls.
[00:25:20] Unfortunately I don't know them.
[00:25:21] No offense.
[00:25:21] But like famous white girls on the internet do not do it for me anymore.
[00:25:24] Like no offense.
[00:25:25] Like girl go off.
[00:25:27] Do your thing.
[00:25:27] But like.
[00:25:28] Where were the black it girls?
[00:25:29] There are some.
[00:25:30] Y'all can find them.
[00:25:32] I wasn't there.
[00:25:32] Wasn't there one or two in there?
[00:25:34] One.
[00:25:34] I mean there were no Asians though.
[00:25:36] Where's the Asian it girls?
[00:25:37] I just said it.
[00:25:37] See where's the Asian it girls?
[00:25:38] There we have them.
[00:25:39] But it's one of those things where I'm just like.
[00:25:40] It's fine.
[00:25:41] Resonate with those girls.
[00:25:42] But here's how I feel.
[00:25:43] At the end of the day.
[00:25:44] All three of these ladies that we're talking about are not of color.
[00:25:48] Yep.
[00:25:48] Damn.
[00:25:48] And you know what?
[00:25:50] Most of this country is made up of white people anyway.
[00:25:52] So.
[00:25:53] It's fine.
[00:25:53] It's time that you know.
[00:25:54] They deserve their shine too.
[00:25:57] I know.
[00:25:57] I get it.
[00:25:58] But my thing is.
[00:25:59] I was just didn't know who these girls were.
[00:26:01] Oh I don't either.
[00:26:02] That's what I'm saying.
[00:26:03] But like the jokes were not.
[00:26:04] I thought they was just hired actresses.
[00:26:07] Julia Fox I knew.
[00:26:08] Some other girl I recognized.
[00:26:10] But then after that I was like.
[00:26:11] Who are these people?
[00:26:13] Yeah.
[00:26:13] So like no shade for them being like.
[00:26:15] You know like.
[00:26:15] I'm just a really hot skinny white girl.
[00:26:17] There's nothing wrong with that.
[00:26:18] Go ahead girl.
[00:26:19] We love it for you.
[00:26:20] Go ahead.
[00:26:21] Go off.
[00:26:21] Give us nothing.
[00:26:22] Give us everything.
[00:26:22] But my thing is.
[00:26:23] I only knew Julia Fox.
[00:26:26] And if that makes me uncool.
[00:26:27] Then so be it.
[00:26:28] But.
[00:26:29] I like that.
[00:26:31] With all the trends and fads that were passing by.
[00:26:33] Especially like.
[00:26:34] The funny scenes with her.
[00:26:36] Her and the other girls.
[00:26:37] Smoking over this man in the gurney.
[00:26:39] In the hospital.
[00:26:40] It's like she's in the middle.
[00:26:42] Of all these fads.
[00:26:43] And all these trends.
[00:26:44] Like the way the frame is.
[00:26:45] She's never not in the center of the screen.
[00:26:47] And all this crap is going on.
[00:26:49] She's standing at the table.
[00:26:50] The head of the table.
[00:26:51] All the it girls.
[00:26:51] Like you know.
[00:26:53] It's it's.
[00:26:53] I'm not sure if they did it on purpose.
[00:26:55] But it feels very symbolic.
[00:26:56] For her to be in the middle.
[00:26:57] All of the chaos.
[00:26:58] In the middle of all the accidents.
[00:26:59] And the bullcrap.
[00:27:00] Yes.
[00:27:01] And all the.
[00:27:01] The fad diets.
[00:27:02] And the shaking.
[00:27:03] Like that says a lot.
[00:27:04] It's so simple.
[00:27:05] It's very like.
[00:27:07] Trashy techno.
[00:27:08] It's giving.
[00:27:10] Like.
[00:27:10] Like her face is done up.
[00:27:11] Everyone looks great.
[00:27:12] But the video color.
[00:27:13] Is just gray.
[00:27:15] And blue.
[00:27:15] And green.
[00:27:16] And ugly.
[00:27:17] It is just.
[00:27:18] It just feels like.
[00:27:18] What am I looking at?
[00:27:19] And it's her.
[00:27:20] She's the best looking thing in the video.
[00:27:23] She's the best sounding thing in the.
[00:27:24] In the.
[00:27:25] In the video.
[00:27:25] You know what I'm saying?
[00:27:26] So I like that.
[00:27:27] But yeah.
[00:27:27] The video is so unserious.
[00:27:28] But because she looks chic.
[00:27:30] It looks like the most serious thing.
[00:27:31] It's so strange.
[00:27:32] But I like it.
[00:27:33] It was just.
[00:27:34] The dexter position was cool.
[00:27:35] I love the video.
[00:27:37] Yeah.
[00:27:37] It didn't matter that I didn't know who these cameos were.
[00:27:40] At all.
[00:27:41] Because I.
[00:27:42] Even if I didn't know who they were.
[00:27:43] I knew that they were.
[00:27:44] Somebody.
[00:27:45] You know.
[00:27:45] So it.
[00:27:46] So it still works.
[00:27:47] In like the context of the story.
[00:27:49] Of all of that.
[00:27:50] And yeah.
[00:27:51] Just the whole thing is so entertaining.
[00:27:52] Because every single scene.
[00:27:53] It's just like.
[00:27:54] What is happening in this scene?
[00:27:56] Like there's always something weird going on.
[00:27:58] Yeah.
[00:27:58] But you need some of them.
[00:27:59] Even if you just look in the back.
[00:28:00] And there's an extra.
[00:28:01] Like doing something weird.
[00:28:02] You know.
[00:28:03] Or like.
[00:28:03] Why are they there?
[00:28:04] And yeah.
[00:28:05] You're right.
[00:28:05] It feels high fashion.
[00:28:06] And really trashy.
[00:28:08] At the same time.
[00:28:09] Which totally works.
[00:28:10] That's like what.
[00:28:11] The brat.
[00:28:12] Like aesthetic is.
[00:28:13] Like I totally respect.
[00:28:15] This whole project.
[00:28:16] On a marketing.
[00:28:17] Yeah.
[00:28:17] And visual level.
[00:28:18] I think they killed it.
[00:28:19] She killed it.
[00:28:21] Yeah.
[00:28:21] I think it's awesome.
[00:28:23] Again.
[00:28:23] I don't think the song.
[00:28:25] Really is anything.
[00:28:26] But the video was super entertaining.
[00:28:28] And I could watch it multiple times.
[00:28:29] And see new things in it.
[00:28:30] Each time.
[00:28:31] So I was thoroughly entertained.
[00:28:32] And am still thoroughly entertained.
[00:28:33] By it.
[00:28:34] Yeah.
[00:28:35] Absolutely.
[00:28:35] Absolutely.
[00:28:35] Yeah.
[00:28:36] So for me.
[00:28:37] I will actually give it to Charlie.
[00:28:38] For the videos.
[00:28:39] I remember going back.
[00:28:40] Over and over again.
[00:28:40] To try to figure out who the girls were anyway.
[00:28:42] So I was like.
[00:28:44] Who are these people?
[00:28:46] But also it's just fun.
[00:28:47] I just.
[00:28:47] I just think it's so simple.
[00:28:49] Doesn't require much.
[00:28:50] But it looks like a lot was involved.
[00:28:52] And that's.
[00:28:52] That takes a lot.
[00:28:53] To kind of make something look so.
[00:28:54] Yes.
[00:28:54] Like effortless.
[00:28:55] So.
[00:28:56] No.
[00:28:56] I'm totally here for it too.
[00:28:57] I have to give it to Charlie.
[00:28:58] I think the video is so fun.
[00:28:59] Yeah.
[00:29:00] Yeah.
[00:29:01] All right.
[00:29:01] Bratz.
[00:29:03] Sabrina.
[00:29:04] Polly Pocket fans.
[00:29:06] And.
[00:29:07] Sappel.
[00:29:08] Roanokes.
[00:29:08] I don't know what you guys fan names are.
[00:29:10] I'm just throwing out names here.
[00:29:11] I know it's terrible.
[00:29:12] But I'm going to figure it out by the end of the episode.
[00:29:14] I will figure out what the fandom names are.
[00:29:16] Anyway.
[00:29:17] So.
[00:29:17] Moving on to the last.
[00:29:19] The last round.
[00:29:20] Which is performance and choreography.
[00:29:21] Or just overall presentation.
[00:29:23] Let's just say that.
[00:29:24] Yes.
[00:29:26] Round three.
[00:29:29] Let's go back to the top with.
[00:29:32] Chappelle.
[00:29:33] Juan.
[00:29:35] Oh man.
[00:29:36] Okay.
[00:29:36] Yeah.
[00:29:36] So I remember.
[00:29:37] So what.
[00:29:38] Got her on my radar.
[00:29:41] At the beginning.
[00:29:42] Or closer to the beginning of this year.
[00:29:43] Was her hot.
[00:29:45] Not hot one.
[00:29:46] Her tiny desk appearance.
[00:29:48] Oh yeah.
[00:29:49] With the lipstick on her teeth.
[00:29:51] When she sounded amazing.
[00:29:53] Amazing.
[00:29:53] Yes.
[00:29:54] Yeah.
[00:29:54] And so vocally.
[00:29:56] Yo.
[00:29:57] She is so good.
[00:29:59] Her pitch is amazing.
[00:30:00] She literally sounds like the record.
[00:30:02] Yeah.
[00:30:02] And her songs.
[00:30:03] As we mentioned earlier.
[00:30:05] Not just this one.
[00:30:05] Like all her songs.
[00:30:06] Are very very hard to sing.
[00:30:08] And she.
[00:30:09] Has delivered.
[00:30:10] And all the performances that I watched.
[00:30:11] I watched the festival performances.
[00:30:12] Where a lot of times people don't sound their best at festivals.
[00:30:15] But she sounded great.
[00:30:16] Yes.
[00:30:16] I watched the TV performances.
[00:30:17] I watched the VMAs.
[00:30:18] Like I watched everything that there is.
[00:30:20] And all of them.
[00:30:21] She sounded so impressive.
[00:30:23] So good for her.
[00:30:24] Also want to give a shout out to her all-female band.
[00:30:26] Who was also killing it.
[00:30:27] In a lot of those performances as well.
[00:30:31] But yeah.
[00:30:32] I feel like she's.
[00:30:33] She kind of reminds me of Lady Gaga.
[00:30:35] Yes.
[00:30:35] In a way.
[00:30:36] Yes.
[00:30:36] Of course she does still.
[00:30:37] She also has that kind of drag.
[00:30:39] Yes.
[00:30:40] Influence.
[00:30:41] And you know.
[00:30:42] Even if it's just her standing there.
[00:30:44] You know.
[00:30:45] Singing the song.
[00:30:46] She'll do something interesting with the costumes.
[00:30:50] Yes.
[00:30:51] She'll have interesting makeup.
[00:30:52] She'll have an interesting prop.
[00:30:54] Or just something around her.
[00:30:56] Just to kind of make that performance stand out.
[00:30:58] And that's very much what Lady Gaga used to do as well.
[00:31:00] Right.
[00:31:01] Because even if you're literally still performing to the same.
[00:31:03] You know.
[00:31:04] The song the exact same way.
[00:31:05] But everything visually is completely unique.
[00:31:07] To that specific performance.
[00:31:09] I think that's awesome.
[00:31:11] Yeah.
[00:31:11] So yeah.
[00:31:12] I think she's great.
[00:31:13] And of course the DMA one.
[00:31:14] Yo.
[00:31:15] The DMA performance.
[00:31:17] That is.
[00:31:18] She's a pop star.
[00:31:19] You know.
[00:31:20] Like that's when it's like.
[00:31:21] Okay.
[00:31:22] Like.
[00:31:22] Yeah.
[00:31:22] She can.
[00:31:23] She knows what she's doing.
[00:31:24] Yes.
[00:31:25] I think.
[00:31:26] I think for me.
[00:31:27] I like the song better when I heard it live.
[00:31:31] Okay.
[00:31:32] I don't.
[00:31:32] I don't know.
[00:31:33] For some reason.
[00:31:34] I just was not digging it.
[00:31:36] Wave form.
[00:31:37] I guess.
[00:31:37] But her live.
[00:31:38] I like.
[00:31:40] Yeah.
[00:31:40] I watched a couple of performances too.
[00:31:42] And then Governor's Ball happened.
[00:31:43] That was freaking chaos.
[00:31:45] But like.
[00:31:45] Things like.
[00:31:46] The way she looks.
[00:31:47] Is very important.
[00:31:48] Talking about visual identity.
[00:31:49] Even if she doesn't look the same.
[00:31:51] People know she's going to either come up.
[00:31:52] Which is a lot of pressure.
[00:31:54] Because she has to show up.
[00:31:54] Almost kind of camp like.
[00:31:56] Like legit.
[00:31:57] That's.
[00:31:57] That's a lot too.
[00:31:58] But I mean.
[00:31:59] It's kind of like Lady Gaga.
[00:32:00] Yeah.
[00:32:00] At the beginning.
[00:32:01] Yeah.
[00:32:01] Yeah.
[00:32:02] Yeah.
[00:32:02] So I'm curious to see what's going to happen with her visuals.
[00:32:04] But yeah.
[00:32:05] I love her themes that she's had with her performances.
[00:32:07] Like I don't know what the heck she was on Jimmy.
[00:32:09] But it was giving Bird.
[00:32:10] It was giving like Victorian Bird.
[00:32:12] I was here for it.
[00:32:12] She was.
[00:32:13] She was a wrestler.
[00:32:14] Where the drummer was in a wrestling ring.
[00:32:17] The Statue of Liberty.
[00:32:18] Like I said.
[00:32:18] So it's really fun to look at.
[00:32:21] The VMA's performance could have been a music video.
[00:32:23] Honestly.
[00:32:23] Like that could have been.
[00:32:24] Uh huh.
[00:32:24] The video girl.
[00:32:25] Like legit.
[00:32:26] That just ask for the rights.
[00:32:28] And be like yo.
[00:32:28] This is my music video now.
[00:32:29] But she sounds so good live.
[00:32:30] Her technique is so good.
[00:32:33] Super present.
[00:32:34] She knows how to move in choreography.
[00:32:36] Where she doesn't look awkward.
[00:32:37] Because you know how some people just don't sing.
[00:32:39] And dance and sing.
[00:32:40] Yes.
[00:32:40] Like you sing because you can't dance.
[00:32:42] Which is fine.
[00:32:43] But if you just stand there.
[00:32:44] You can't.
[00:32:48] Or like just crawl.
[00:32:50] And like really give.
[00:32:51] She emotes well.
[00:32:52] And I think that's really important.
[00:32:54] So she's very theatrical.
[00:32:55] I'm not sure if she was ever a theater kid.
[00:32:57] Chapel Roan Oaks.
[00:32:58] Let me know.
[00:32:59] If she was a theater kid.
[00:33:00] Um.
[00:33:00] Because she gives theater kid.
[00:33:02] The way she performs.
[00:33:03] And I appreciate it.
[00:33:04] Um.
[00:33:04] She's super talented.
[00:33:05] And she's present.
[00:33:07] Which is like.
[00:33:08] I think because the songs are so challenging.
[00:33:10] She does actually focus on the notes she's hitting.
[00:33:13] And how she's articulating.
[00:33:14] And I really do appreciate it.
[00:33:15] Because the notes are tough.
[00:33:17] Um.
[00:33:17] Um.
[00:33:17] She's a star.
[00:33:18] Uh.
[00:33:19] She's a.
[00:33:20] Yeah.
[00:33:20] Oh.
[00:33:20] Mm-hmm.
[00:33:21] I enjoy her.
[00:33:22] Okay.
[00:33:23] Moving on to Sabrina.
[00:33:25] With Espresso.
[00:33:26] Yeah.
[00:33:27] So I also with this one watched.
[00:33:29] Kind of all the performances.
[00:33:31] Mm-hmm.
[00:33:31] All over the world.
[00:33:32] Like she did the Summertime Ball in London.
[00:33:35] Yes.
[00:33:35] She did some of the talk shows.
[00:33:36] Jimmy Fallon.
[00:33:37] SNL.
[00:33:38] Yes.
[00:33:38] I even watched the fan cam from the tour as well.
[00:33:41] Yeah.
[00:33:42] Yeah.
[00:33:42] This song is fun.
[00:33:43] And she also kind of does some different things with it.
[00:33:45] Kind of each time she's performed it as well.
[00:33:47] Mm-hmm.
[00:33:48] I will say vocally.
[00:33:49] Obviously the song is not the type of song that you would show off your vocals for.
[00:33:55] You know.
[00:33:55] Yeah.
[00:33:55] Like there's not much you can do there.
[00:33:57] Yeah.
[00:33:57] Yeah.
[00:33:58] And because it is that kind of dreamy, slinky, kind of ethereal thing.
[00:34:03] She does need that backing track there.
[00:34:05] In order to keep that same feel.
[00:34:07] Because you just can't recreate that like with a raw live vocal.
[00:34:11] Yes.
[00:34:11] Exactly.
[00:34:12] Especially because you know in the studio version she's singing quite soft.
[00:34:16] Yeah.
[00:34:16] Like it's very breathy.
[00:34:17] And you can't really do that.
[00:34:18] That's really tough to do in a live setting.
[00:34:20] Yes.
[00:34:20] And so it was interesting kind of watching her performances.
[00:34:23] Especially as she's gotten more comfortable singing the song as well.
[00:34:25] Yeah.
[00:34:25] She's kind of added little moments where she just does some audience participation.
[00:34:29] Yes.
[00:34:29] You know what's.
[00:34:30] You know like.
[00:34:30] Yeah.
[00:34:31] She'll like yell things.
[00:34:32] Yeah.
[00:34:32] And she'll add a little bit more power.
[00:34:35] Add a little bit more sass just naturally.
[00:34:36] Yes.
[00:34:36] Just because of the setting.
[00:34:37] So I think she does execute it pretty well.
[00:34:41] And yes she really does do the whole like.
[00:34:44] I look cute and innocent.
[00:34:46] But also there's you know more to the eye there.
[00:34:48] There's like a.
[00:34:49] You know there's some darkness there.
[00:34:51] Yes.
[00:34:51] You know cheekiness there.
[00:34:53] Yeah.
[00:34:53] And she pulls that off so well.
[00:34:55] And this song is perfect for that.
[00:34:57] I will say my favorite of all the live versions.
[00:34:59] I loved the Jimmy Fallon one where she had the horn section with her.
[00:35:04] Oh it sounded so good.
[00:35:05] And also vocally she did a couple little different things there for that song as well.
[00:35:09] Yeah.
[00:35:10] And you know even without dancers like she does a good job keeping my attention.
[00:35:13] Her stage presence is very natural.
[00:35:15] Right.
[00:35:16] So yeah I'm here for her.
[00:35:18] I'm here for her.
[00:35:19] I'm watching all these.
[00:35:20] Yeah I like her cheekiness on stage.
[00:35:22] I swear she's like a little country singer in a pop world's body.
[00:35:24] Because the way she sings and like kind of like flips the notes or like sings things.
[00:35:28] She puts a twang on a lot of her vocals.
[00:35:31] But yeah I like how she translates her humor on stage.
[00:35:35] Because yeah you're right.
[00:35:35] She doesn't have much to work with vocally.
[00:35:37] But she knows how to work the song.
[00:35:39] Which is important.
[00:35:41] Because if you can't communicate with the crowd.
[00:35:44] Girl what are you doing?
[00:35:45] If you can't even do choreography because the song is literally that like.
[00:35:48] I want to say the song is anemic.
[00:35:50] But because it's so floaty.
[00:35:51] You have no choice but to actually do something with choreography.
[00:35:55] And she does it really well.
[00:35:56] Especially in those big old Polly Pocket shoes.
[00:35:58] Those brat heels that she wears.
[00:36:00] She does a good job of twisting.
[00:36:02] Turning.
[00:36:03] Pivoting.
[00:36:04] Oh my gosh.
[00:36:06] And she doesn't get swallowed up by her dancers.
[00:36:07] They're doing like full out moves.
[00:36:09] And she doesn't like you know look like.
[00:36:12] Even though she's like what five foot.
[00:36:13] She doesn't look like she's getting overwhelmed.
[00:36:15] Um.
[00:36:16] I like the SNL performance with the little red.
[00:36:19] The little red nightgown that she was wearing.
[00:36:21] Because it was like Sabrina loves to be on top.
[00:36:23] Things like that.
[00:36:25] Add more.
[00:36:26] See?
[00:36:26] A little giggle.
[00:36:28] That takes a certain level of understanding that you can't take yourself too seriously.
[00:36:34] You know what I'm saying?
[00:36:35] So I think for her.
[00:36:36] She's all about the full concept of.
[00:36:40] Like.
[00:36:41] Her humor.
[00:36:43] And her beauty.
[00:36:44] Which is good.
[00:36:45] Because if you put the stuff on mute.
[00:36:46] You could still watch.
[00:36:48] And get what's happening here.
[00:36:49] She's singing.
[00:36:50] She's dancing.
[00:36:50] She's being cute.
[00:36:51] And you know.
[00:36:51] So I think that's good.
[00:36:53] That's very good.
[00:36:54] Um.
[00:36:54] But yeah.
[00:36:55] I don't think I have like a favorite performance.
[00:36:56] But the SNL one stands out because of that red.
[00:36:58] That red.
[00:36:58] It was just so cute.
[00:36:59] And that newspaper that she had.
[00:37:00] It was cute.
[00:37:01] Yeah.
[00:37:01] Super cute.
[00:37:03] Yeah.
[00:37:03] Nice.
[00:37:04] Okay.
[00:37:05] And then moving on to.
[00:37:06] Charlie.
[00:37:07] XCX with 360.
[00:37:08] Okay.
[00:37:08] Not as many performances of this one.
[00:37:11] Yeah.
[00:37:11] There's the SNL one.
[00:37:12] And then I just watched a couple fan cams of the sweat tour.
[00:37:15] Yeah.
[00:37:16] Did I miss anything?
[00:37:17] I don't think so.
[00:37:18] Right?
[00:37:18] No.
[00:37:18] She didn't really perform it much.
[00:37:19] Okay.
[00:37:20] Um.
[00:37:22] I'm going to be honest.
[00:37:22] I don't have much to say here.
[00:37:25] Uh.
[00:37:26] I do think with the SNL performance.
[00:37:27] I do think it's hilarious.
[00:37:28] That she literally looks like she just walked off the street.
[00:37:31] Straight onto the stage.
[00:37:33] You know.
[00:37:33] Like with her handbag and her sunglasses.
[00:37:35] And it's just like.
[00:37:36] Yeah.
[00:37:37] And again.
[00:37:37] It just goes back to what we're saying.
[00:37:38] Like the song is.
[00:37:39] It's just about the feeling of it.
[00:37:41] Yeah.
[00:37:41] Like the whole point is that she doesn't need to try that hard.
[00:37:44] And she just is.
[00:37:46] Big.
[00:37:46] You know.
[00:37:46] She is awesome.
[00:37:47] Just the way she is.
[00:37:48] She doesn't need to prove anything to anyone.
[00:37:51] Yeah.
[00:37:51] That as the attitude I think is cool.
[00:37:54] Like I.
[00:37:55] I think the visual.
[00:37:57] That's an old show where.
[00:37:58] Which is the green.
[00:37:59] Yeah.
[00:37:59] Like corner.
[00:38:00] Like I thought that was cool.
[00:38:02] Yeah.
[00:38:02] But you know.
[00:38:03] Not much to say here.
[00:38:04] It's not like the song is hard to sing.
[00:38:06] You know.
[00:38:06] And even with that.
[00:38:07] Yeah.
[00:38:07] And added live autotune to it.
[00:38:08] Which you know.
[00:38:09] It makes sense with the song.
[00:38:10] Yeah.
[00:38:11] Um.
[00:38:11] With the tour performances.
[00:38:13] I mean.
[00:38:13] She kind of just jumps around.
[00:38:15] Like I.
[00:38:15] I don't have much to say here.
[00:38:17] Yeah.
[00:38:17] I mean.
[00:38:18] Again.
[00:38:18] I don't think she's.
[00:38:19] The whole point like I said.
[00:38:21] Is that she isn't really trying that hard.
[00:38:22] So.
[00:38:23] I can't even say anything on her.
[00:38:24] Like stage presence.
[00:38:25] Or anything like that.
[00:38:26] Because the whole point is that.
[00:38:27] Or I guess part of the point.
[00:38:29] Is that she doesn't need to try.
[00:38:31] Yeah.
[00:38:32] It's a.
[00:38:32] It's like a conundrum.
[00:38:33] You know.
[00:38:34] Yeah.
[00:38:34] Some of those things where it's like.
[00:38:35] But we want more.
[00:38:36] But she was telling us.
[00:38:37] That you're not going to give us more than what you're giving us.
[00:38:38] Oh.
[00:38:40] Good job.
[00:38:40] Like you know.
[00:38:41] Like.
[00:38:42] I'm satisfied.
[00:38:43] I guess.
[00:38:44] I agree.
[00:38:45] You know.
[00:38:45] The thing about the green performance.
[00:38:46] Like yes.
[00:38:47] Brat is the color.
[00:38:48] That's the brat color.
[00:38:49] Yeah.
[00:38:50] But also.
[00:38:51] I don't know if she did it on purpose.
[00:38:53] Part of me feels like she does.
[00:38:54] The green screen.
[00:38:55] Is perfect for a key.
[00:38:57] The key framing.
[00:38:59] If you ever need.
[00:38:59] Yes.
[00:39:00] Dude.
[00:39:01] It's so.
[00:39:01] I saw some of those.
[00:39:02] Funny.
[00:39:03] It is so funny.
[00:39:05] Like the internet is doing her job for her.
[00:39:09] Because all you see is a girl dancing in front of like.
[00:39:11] You know.
[00:39:12] A crazy speech.
[00:39:12] Like you know.
[00:39:13] The monologue from.
[00:39:14] Fuck.
[00:39:15] I'm sorry.
[00:39:15] The monologue from.
[00:39:17] From Romeo and Juliet.
[00:39:18] Where he's like.
[00:39:19] No play them above your house.
[00:39:20] I'm just giving you an example.
[00:39:21] He did not.
[00:39:21] That didn't happen.
[00:39:22] But it's things like that.
[00:39:24] Napoleon Dynamite.
[00:39:25] And she's sitting at 360.
[00:39:27] And the audience is just watching.
[00:39:28] And Napoleon sitting there doing his dance from canned heat.
[00:39:31] Like is.
[00:39:31] That's.
[00:39:32] That is the joke.
[00:39:34] And I think it's fun.
[00:39:35] I think it's great.
[00:39:36] But it's not her performance.
[00:39:37] I think with all of her production quality.
[00:39:39] Like her boiler room set was awesome.
[00:39:40] I think if she's going to do it live or something like that.
[00:39:43] I do wonder why she didn't.
[00:39:45] Like for the live shows.
[00:39:46] Try to do a little bit of a set moment.
[00:39:48] Have a moment where she's like.
[00:39:49] Freaky.
[00:39:49] Freaky.
[00:39:50] Freaky.
[00:39:50] You know what I'm saying?
[00:39:51] Like really.
[00:39:53] I'm not saying dance.
[00:39:54] Do what you're good at.
[00:39:55] And just make it fun.
[00:39:57] Do some loops.
[00:39:58] I don't know.
[00:39:58] I don't know what her bag is really anymore.
[00:40:01] In terms of like performing on these nighttime shows or whatever.
[00:40:03] But I know on tour.
[00:40:05] I know when she's working on her music at home.
[00:40:07] She's involved.
[00:40:08] So I am curious to know what would have happened.
[00:40:10] If she had gotten a little bit more like.
[00:40:12] Chalant.
[00:40:13] Instead of being so nonchalant.
[00:40:15] You know.
[00:40:16] Still fun.
[00:40:16] I mean I.
[00:40:17] Again I don't know much about her.
[00:40:18] Like I haven't seen a lot of the promo for this album.
[00:40:21] So did she do more with other songs when she performed them?
[00:40:26] Not.
[00:40:26] Not like.
[00:40:27] Not really really.
[00:40:28] But she can.
[00:40:28] Like Boiler Room.
[00:40:29] Like in the Boiler Room.
[00:40:29] Oh I know she can.
[00:40:30] I know.
[00:40:31] I mean I've followed her career.
[00:40:32] Like since she started.
[00:40:33] Like I'm aware.
[00:40:34] Like the Boiler Room set.
[00:40:35] Like she was DJing.
[00:40:36] You know what I'm saying?
[00:40:37] Like she can do a lot more.
[00:40:40] With what she does.
[00:40:42] So that song.
[00:40:42] I mean.
[00:40:43] I guess.
[00:40:44] But again.
[00:40:44] I think that's the point.
[00:40:45] Right?
[00:40:46] Yes.
[00:40:46] Exactly.
[00:40:46] That's what the challenge is.
[00:40:47] It's just like.
[00:40:48] Thanks.
[00:40:49] Thanks.
[00:40:49] Just like.
[00:40:50] Sure.
[00:40:50] But again.
[00:40:51] Just not for me.
[00:40:52] Just not for me.
[00:40:53] Yeah.
[00:40:54] I mean I saw people.
[00:40:54] You know.
[00:40:55] Of course people were like.
[00:40:56] Like oh my god.
[00:40:56] Best SNL performance ever.
[00:40:58] You know.
[00:40:58] Like they were like.
[00:40:59] Maybe it wasn't.
[00:41:00] But you know what.
[00:41:01] She's still great.
[00:41:01] No no no.
[00:41:02] I think they.
[00:41:02] I think they're in on the joke.
[00:41:03] Right?
[00:41:04] I think it's the whole thing.
[00:41:05] Is that it's like.
[00:41:07] She doesn't need to try that hard.
[00:41:08] Like it just is what it is.
[00:41:09] Like.
[00:41:09] As I was saying babes.
[00:41:10] It wasn't.
[00:41:11] I mean I hope it wasn't serious.
[00:41:12] I took it as sarcasm.
[00:41:13] Yeah.
[00:41:13] I think so too.
[00:41:14] I hope so.
[00:41:15] No offense to.
[00:41:16] She's real.
[00:41:16] She's so talented.
[00:41:17] But this is not like her best song.
[00:41:18] No.
[00:41:19] But again.
[00:41:19] Like I get it as a marketing.
[00:41:21] Yes.
[00:41:22] Like if this is the era of Brat.
[00:41:25] And you're putting on this whole.
[00:41:26] Like personification.
[00:41:28] It's consistent.
[00:41:29] It's held way.
[00:41:30] Good job.
[00:41:30] Like that's cool.
[00:41:31] It's again.
[00:41:32] I would prefer to watch.
[00:41:35] You know.
[00:41:35] Someone do something more than that.
[00:41:37] But I get it.
[00:41:39] Go ahead green screen Charlie.
[00:41:41] Yeah.
[00:41:41] Yeah.
[00:41:42] All right.
[00:41:43] So the winner for me is going to be Chapel.
[00:41:45] I think she has all of the qualities of both.
[00:41:49] Mm-hmm.
[00:41:49] Girls and her performances of Good Luck Babe.
[00:41:52] Yeah.
[00:41:52] Sabrina's a close.
[00:41:53] But the song doesn't allow much room.
[00:41:56] I agree.
[00:41:57] I have to also shout out.
[00:41:59] Sabrina's VMA performance was also very good.
[00:42:02] Yes.
[00:42:02] I mean Espresso was only a little section of it.
[00:42:04] With her dramatic reveal of her birthday.
[00:42:06] Yeah.
[00:42:06] I thought that was hilarious.
[00:42:07] I love the whole moon man.
[00:42:09] Yeah.
[00:42:10] Space man thing.
[00:42:11] I thought that was just super creative.
[00:42:12] But anyway.
[00:42:14] I have to give it to Chapel as well.
[00:42:16] I have to.
[00:42:17] Yes.
[00:42:17] She is so good.
[00:42:18] And yeah this song is just.
[00:42:20] It's tough.
[00:42:21] Like I also want to shout out Kelly Clarkson and Miranda Lambert's little cover too.
[00:42:25] Oh my gosh.
[00:42:26] That was so good.
[00:42:26] I mean it's Kelly.
[00:42:27] I'd be surprised.
[00:42:27] Come on.
[00:42:28] I know but it just shows how good the melody is.
[00:42:30] The song is.
[00:42:30] Yep.
[00:42:31] Yeah.
[00:42:31] I mean Sabrina covered it too but she made it sound country.
[00:42:33] Oh yeah.
[00:42:34] I mean Sabrina's cover is pretty great.
[00:42:36] Yeah.
[00:42:36] Yeah.
[00:42:36] She's so annoyed.
[00:42:37] I was into it.
[00:42:38] She's so chill about it too.
[00:42:39] She's like I guess I'll cover the song.
[00:42:40] And it sounded good.
[00:42:41] I was like what you girl.
[00:42:42] Yeah.
[00:42:43] She's a catchy singer.
[00:42:44] And a pop artist.
[00:42:44] Okay.
[00:42:45] So I guess overall thoughts.
[00:42:47] Overall winner.
[00:42:48] I think for me it has to be Chapel.
[00:42:51] Because yeah.
[00:42:52] That song is just undeniable.
[00:42:53] But I do love Espresso for sure.
[00:42:54] And yeah.
[00:42:55] Like I said.
[00:42:55] I respect Charlie for this whole era.
[00:42:58] And I get it.
[00:42:59] Yeah.
[00:42:59] It's just not for me.
[00:43:00] Yes.
[00:43:01] I mean mine.
[00:43:02] Each girl won the round.
[00:43:04] And this.
[00:43:10] Oh wow.
[00:43:12] Yeah.
[00:43:12] If you guys are new here.
[00:43:13] Pop off is always my heart.
[00:43:14] It's like I'm like.
[00:43:15] I don't know.
[00:43:17] For me.
[00:43:18] I think overall.
[00:43:20] I think only.
[00:43:21] I'm trying to figure out.
[00:43:21] If this is my own personal taste.
[00:43:22] It might be because of that.
[00:43:23] But I want to give it to Sabrina.
[00:43:26] I think for me.
[00:43:28] She's consistent.
[00:43:29] It's across the board.
[00:43:30] She gave us a music video.
[00:43:31] And all the categories.
[00:43:33] She gave us something.
[00:43:35] So.
[00:43:35] That's fair.
[00:43:36] Based off that.
[00:43:37] I'll say that.
[00:43:38] But also I enjoy her as an artist.
[00:43:39] And I can't say that.
[00:43:42] Not that virality matters.
[00:43:44] But there's a lot of songs on her album.
[00:43:48] That Chapel's album.
[00:43:49] None of them kept popping up for me.
[00:43:52] It was only Hot To Go.
[00:43:53] And Good Luck Babe.
[00:43:54] So she's thinking about the whole artistry.
[00:43:55] For the summertime.
[00:43:56] Brat also popped up a bunch.
[00:43:58] Apple.
[00:43:59] Guess.
[00:44:00] But for Chapel.
[00:44:01] It just didn't happen.
[00:44:02] I'm not sure if that's like a marketing.
[00:44:04] Or if it's like she just didn't want to do that.
[00:44:06] Because I'm not sure what her company is pushing on TikTok.
[00:44:08] Because you have to actually submit that.
[00:44:09] They don't just pick up the songs for artists guys.
[00:44:12] But I mean honestly.
[00:44:13] Her whole album.
[00:44:14] I feel like.
[00:44:16] The streaming numbers are crazy.
[00:44:18] On Chapel's album.
[00:44:19] So.
[00:44:20] I bet.
[00:44:20] They might not even need to push all the tracks.
[00:44:22] Without them getting the attention.
[00:44:24] You know.
[00:44:24] No that's valid.
[00:44:25] That's so valid.
[00:44:26] Again.
[00:44:26] This optics.
[00:44:27] And just what I'm exposed to personally.
[00:44:29] I was exposed mostly to Sabrina and Charlie.
[00:44:32] So like.
[00:44:32] I would say like their summer was theirs.
[00:44:35] But like.
[00:44:36] Longevity wise.
[00:44:38] Who might last a little longer.
[00:44:39] It might be Chappelle.
[00:44:40] It might be Chappelle Rhone.
[00:44:42] Yeah.
[00:44:42] I don't know.
[00:44:43] I think.
[00:44:44] I mean.
[00:44:45] I think with all the.
[00:44:47] Non music side of things.
[00:44:48] Where clearly fame has been.
[00:44:50] You know.
[00:44:51] Came very fast and hard for her.
[00:44:53] Yeah.
[00:44:53] And you know.
[00:44:55] She's had to kind of take some steps back.
[00:44:57] So I.
[00:44:58] You know.
[00:44:58] I hope she has a good team around her.
[00:45:00] To kind of just manage all of that.
[00:45:03] You know.
[00:45:03] Because.
[00:45:04] You know.
[00:45:04] With Shawn Mendes.
[00:45:05] Who also.
[00:45:06] Oh yeah.
[00:45:06] Had to take a bit of a break.
[00:45:08] Like his album.
[00:45:09] It bombed.
[00:45:10] Like this new one.
[00:45:11] Yeah.
[00:45:12] So yeah.
[00:45:13] I hope she has a good team around her.
[00:45:15] That's.
[00:45:15] That's kind of keeping everything in check.
[00:45:18] I mean.
[00:45:19] So that she doesn't get too overwhelmed.
[00:45:21] Yeah.
[00:45:21] It's tough.
[00:45:22] We'll see what happens.
[00:45:22] Because I mean.
[00:45:23] I think the fans are there.
[00:45:24] Like you said.
[00:45:24] Like you mentioned.
[00:45:25] Because she's not so much.
[00:45:26] And though.
[00:45:26] Like the things we know about her.
[00:45:28] Have been like.
[00:45:28] Memeable.
[00:45:29] Not memeable.
[00:45:29] Like those moments.
[00:45:30] That the VMA is on the red carpet.
[00:45:31] Or her.
[00:45:32] Saying that she's not picking certain candidates.
[00:45:34] Things like that.
[00:45:35] It wasn't because of her music.
[00:45:37] So.
[00:45:37] Yeah.
[00:45:37] I don't think.
[00:45:38] The music will be the problem.
[00:45:40] Like you said.
[00:45:40] I don't think so.
[00:45:41] But.
[00:45:42] But it should be interesting to see.
[00:45:43] What the next project is going to bring.
[00:45:44] For all of these artists.
[00:45:45] Like Charlie.
[00:45:46] Because she has such a big album now.
[00:45:47] She's touring it.
[00:45:48] And like promoting it.
[00:45:49] And like still like performing things from it.
[00:45:51] But the next album is either going to be one of those.
[00:45:53] Like make or break.
[00:45:54] Like should we still.
[00:45:55] Same thing with Sabrina.
[00:45:56] Had a great year.
[00:45:57] Just had the Christmas.
[00:45:58] Nonsense Christmas come out.
[00:46:00] What is next for you girl?
[00:46:01] Are you going to do country?
[00:46:02] Are you going to give us the same nondescript pop.
[00:46:04] With your color of lyricism.
[00:46:07] You know what I'm saying?
[00:46:08] So.
[00:46:08] I think Sabrina actually has probably the most.
[00:46:11] Solid.
[00:46:12] And bass out of the three.
[00:46:14] Yes.
[00:46:15] Yeah.
[00:46:15] Like I think if all three of them.
[00:46:17] Were to end their current eras.
[00:46:19] And start a new kind of tomorrow.
[00:46:22] Okay.
[00:46:23] I think Sabrina will get the most attention.
[00:46:26] Right off the bat.
[00:46:27] Hmm.
[00:46:29] I mean.
[00:46:29] Chappelle.
[00:46:30] Chappelle.
[00:46:31] Chappelle decides to stop doing the drag thing.
[00:46:32] Don't you think?
[00:46:33] If she dressed like quote unquote normally.
[00:46:35] That wouldn't get attention.
[00:46:36] Like you know JoJo was like extra crazy.
[00:46:38] But if she had just come out in some jean and t-shirt.
[00:46:40] People would have been like what?
[00:46:43] What do you think?
[00:46:44] No.
[00:46:45] Oh.
[00:46:45] Ooh.
[00:46:46] Okay.
[00:46:46] Interesting.
[00:46:47] I don't.
[00:46:47] The next couple of years should be so interesting.
[00:46:50] I'm not talking about 2025.
[00:46:50] I'm talking about 2026 as well.
[00:46:51] So the next two years should be interesting to see what happens.
[00:46:54] Because both.
[00:46:55] Because all three of these artists are still kind of on the wave of what they left off of.
[00:46:59] Or are on tour.
[00:47:01] Excuse me.
[00:47:01] I'm having a mild stroke.
[00:47:03] Or are on tour.
[00:47:04] So it should be interesting to see what happens in the next two years.
[00:47:07] Ooh.
[00:47:08] Hey fans.
[00:47:09] Let us know.
[00:47:10] Okay.
[00:47:11] What you guys think.
[00:47:12] What wins the pop-up for you.
[00:47:13] Once again.
[00:47:13] Be nice.
[00:47:14] Or don't.
[00:47:15] But you're going to miss an opportunity to explain this in a civil way.
[00:47:18] Okay.
[00:47:19] Oh.
