[00:00:00] Viewer discretion is advised.

[00:00:02] Your fave will be criticized.

[00:00:04] That's Chris.

[00:00:05] That's Chantel.

[00:00:06] And welcome to CCTV The Nonstop Pop Show.

[00:00:09] And today we'll be discussing three of K-pop's biggest scandals of 2023.

[00:00:19] Here on CCTV, Chris and I have the inside scoop with extensive experience performing on stage and controversial Crazy Horse Paris performance. And also, Rises Seung-han, who is now on indefinite hiatus. Yes. So yeah, we're gonna give our opinions. Well, we'll recap what we know of it. If we missed anything, definitely let us know and we'd love to know your thoughts as well. So let us know in the comments, send us DMs.

[00:01:42] Yes, indeed, because you guys are definitely keeping us,

[00:01:46] keeping us, what's the word for it?

[00:01:47] Keen on what's going on? their hit single, Cupid. And the English version actually gained traction on TikTok and propelled the song into the hot 100 here in the US, making them the sixth and fastest K-pop group to achieve this, which was crazy. Yeah. Right. And due to the success, Warner Music also became involved to work on overseas distribution for the group.

[00:03:01] So everything was looking real good for them.

[00:03:05] Though the group had huge successCon LA, 2023, and they also were supposed to film a music video for Barbie Dreams which was going to be on the, or is on the Barbie soundtrack. And in August 2023, the Seoul Central District Court actually ruled in favor of a tract dismissing

[00:04:23] the members in Junction. There's all these like PR news articles going out, so people didn't really know what to believe. So it was very messy. Yes, it was. And it's still messy. Oh my God, absolutely. I remember hearing things about like the CEO selling his car to get them trained and all those other things. Like, and then the girls are saying we were being treated poorly.

[00:05:40] It's a lot. Yeah. Well, okay. So and then there were people against that that were kind of like well He's paying off these news publications to write positive articles to be on his side Right public opinion man, right then you have the members then coming out and saying

[00:07:02] No, he treated us awfully like crap. So, I mean, good for them. That's awesome. But I feel like had they had not reached that great deal of success, this would not be a conversation right now. So it's kind of like, I can see where he's coming from. It's like, I did all of this, we got lucky.

[00:08:22] I think it may have been some mentioning of him paying

[00:08:25] for advertisement, if you will.

[00:08:28] I'm not gonna say payola. these songs to get all the stuff together. And so, yes, they definitely got lucky with this song. And so maybe he didn't have the experience to deal with so much success either. So it kind of just a lot of other things were just happening. And then also having, we have both worked with Korean music related companies

[00:09:43] and their contracts are not great.

[00:09:47] No, so only get three days or something like that. Something like that. That's all they get. But that type of

[00:11:02] thing where they're not giving them the care that they need. And the fake virus result came out, it just made them look like they were just crying wolf. And we, you and I both know to be a part of dance teams about having a job, doing all this other stuff and mixing in some type of creative work, recreational or otherwise. Yeah. It is exhausting because you're trying to sit there and be like a normal human,

[00:12:23] but like still feed your creative side. For know, and they're being influenced by these powerful

[00:13:43] people to be like, you need to do this in order to be what you want to be.

[00:13:46] Yeah, they don't need a track. I can get you in with this company this company or this company something like that But yeah, anyway, so so attract was accusing this on some eel, right? Yes Convincing and brainract was saying that the Givers manipulated the situation to own almost the entire copyright of the song Cupid. Yeah. And that An-Sung-Il guy also lied about all his credentials and stuff.

[00:16:20] Sorry.

[00:16:21] I'm not laughing at the situation.

[00:16:23] I'm laughing at the belying.

[00:16:24] Why?

[00:16:25] That's a lot.

[00:16:26] Yeah.

[00:16:27] It's a lot.

[00:16:28] I don't even know if song's gonna go anywhere, and but Mr. Oh, soon you'd take a majority share of it. Right. Dots over here, I'm just trying to connect dots over here, 10 hat moment. Yeah. And that's probably the reason why he asked so much because when I was doing the publishing, I had to sit there and send it to this person, send it to that person, is this right?

[00:17:41] Get it stamped, and even when it was late,

[00:17:43] I had to make an old document thing, sorry,

[00:17:45] it's late, can we redo it?

[00:17:47] Like there's so many me know what it is. Right. And so it's possible that attracts CEO was just trusted. The givers just to do it and never even understood what was happening until like after the fact.

[00:19:01] Yeah, that's valid.

[00:19:02] Yeah. The whole Ford signature thing with the Swedish songwriters and stuff.

[00:19:06] That's a whole other thing.

[00:19:08] Go ahead.

[00:20:02] I'm just saying that. Come on. That's what I'm saying.

[00:20:03] But I don't know.

[00:20:04] This is coming from like past experience from so long ago that contractually I'm okay to

[00:20:09] talk about it.

[00:20:10] But like, I don't know what happened.

[00:20:13] But you're right.

[00:20:15] Stamps are definitely a thing.

[00:20:16] But usually there is a rule where it's like the person who's stamping it is authorizing

[00:20:20] it.

[00:20:21] So it usually is still passable.

[00:20:22] Yeah.

[00:20:23] But if it's like a.

[00:20:24] Yeah.

[00:20:25] I don't know.

[00:20:26] But that's a whole.

[00:20:27] Or girl thing.

[00:20:28] Yes. But that's not the mentality in Korea because in Korea it's about respect, right? There's a it's a lot about hierarchy and respect and it's like the CEO like gave them the opportunity so they're showing a lot of disrespect by Now coming back around and and doing all this. Yeah. Yeah, they are the weak remaining. In terms of like our monetary, there's everything. There's just, I think both are fine and right. But the three members have a fight on their hands because apparently the parents are being came after too, which being chased too, because I mean, the girls were like 18 to 20. Like they weren't even adults yet. So the parents are now like,

[00:23:00] gotta open up their pocketbooks.

[00:23:02] And I'm like, oh my God, that is so,

[00:23:06] I think about like my music career.

[00:23:07] I have never asked my mom for a cent. crazy because Luna was going through so much and it's like where is their law? Anyway, so basically this 50-50 Act would protect the rights of smaller agencies in the arts entertainment sector. So basically instead of like giving a little bit more power to the artist, it's essentially addressing, poaching, finger poaching and tampering of an artist contract, which is not great.

[00:25:22] They should just start it over. Like don't use the 50-50 brand.

[00:25:24] Like let's just start fresh.

[00:25:26] Like it's tainted.

[00:25:27] Like it's one of those things where 50-50,

[00:25:30] like they have like what, five songs?

[00:25:32] Like, yes.

[00:25:33] Oh yeah, I'm a fucking yeah.

[00:25:34] Yes, they had a huge hit, which is awesome.

[00:25:36] But do they really have like diehard fans?

[00:25:40] Like they're not at that point.

[00:25:41] You know what I mean?

[00:25:42] They were around for literally like four months actively.

[00:25:45] Which is crazy, yeah.

[00:25:46] You know, like. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It was a lucky draw. Yeah. Or unlucky, I don't know.

[00:27:01] I mean, I hope they get their money

[00:27:03] that they were supposed to.

[00:27:05] Or I hope everyone just stops and leaves everybody alone. The K-pop idol being associated with nudity and such an overtly sexual space came with backlash. And many conservative netizens heavily criticized Lisa for her performance and her performance actually came in the midst of Blackpink's contract renewal controversy. So it became a lot more mixy and swirly than it should have been, but also just culturally

[00:28:21] speaking like you mentioned before, they knew the different out there in Copranco.

[00:28:25] Yeah. sexualization and stuff too, that's always been an issue too. And other K-pop idols have all faced these types of things, like Hyunha and Hwasa. And yeah, they're just still very conservative there and it really sucks.

[00:29:40] So I think you just have to kind of keep that frame of mind

[00:29:44] with why this was such an issue. The woman looked happy and she's a 26 year old woman who wants to explore her femininity, not her sexuality. And sometimes being feminine means exploring that sensuality. It wasn't full frontal, like a can can. So let's give her that. And it was more like showgirls, you know, the dresses of her sase, it's giving Nomi Malone.

[00:31:01] Like it wasn't like, she was like, you know,

[00:31:04]
