Melanie C (aka Sporty Spice) sits down with CCTV: The Nonstop Pop Show backstage at Webster Hall in New York City, a few shows into her Sweat tour, for an honest, music-first interview about her journey from the Spice Girls to her ninth solo album, “Sweat”. Two lifelong superfans take her from co-writing the Spice Girls catalogue, through the highs and hard times of going solo, to the joy and reinvention of the “Sweat” era.
Melanie C opens up about learning to write songs inside the Spice Girls, finding her identity outside Sporty Spice on “Northern Star”, revisiting “Forever”, going fully independent after leaving Virgin for “Beautiful Intentions”, falling in love with dance music and DJing, and why “Sweat” feels like the sweet spot of her whole career. Plus, we hand her our cheeky business-card question (is "Wannabe" one of the Spice Girls' worst songs?) and she defends it herself before naming the Spice and solo deep cuts fans have slept on. 00:01:56 --> 00:01:59 And there are a lot of musical influences, super diverse.
00:02:00 --> 00:02:02 There's G-Funk, New Jack, Swing, R&B, Disco.
00:02:02 --> 00:02:07 So what was it like honing your songwriting skills amongst these vibrant women?
00:02:08 --> 00:02:08 Oh my goodness.
00:02:08 --> 00:02:11 I mean, what a gift, you know?
00:02:11 --> 00:02:19 So the five of us, all music lovers and love so many, between us especially, so many genres of music, we brought all of that together.
00:02:20 --> 00:02:25 But we worked with incredible songwriters and producers and they taught us how to craft a song.
00:02:26 --> 00:02:31 And obviously that's put me in such a good place to go on and continue as a solo artist.
00:02:32 --> 00:02:35 But those first few years in the studio, they were just chaotic.
00:02:36 --> 00:02:36 Can you imagine?
00:02:37 --> 00:02:41 Like five girls and then we often would work with like producer teams or there'd be a couple of other people.
00:02:42 --> 00:02:44 And there was just so many ideas.
00:02:44 --> 00:02:48 The collaboration was so beautiful that it was often there was too much.
00:02:48 --> 00:02:50 We were having to strip things away.
00:02:51 --> 00:02:53 So I think that's a wonderful place to be.
00:02:53 --> 00:02:56 And that's a good thing to learn as a songwriter as well.
00:02:56 --> 00:02:58 You know, don't throw the kitchen sink at it.

00:03:01 --> 00:03:07 Is there a specific lyric, melody, or part of a Spice Girls song that you came up with that you're particularly proud of?
00:03:07 --> 00:03:16 Um, I will, I know there's a really, um, there's a big love of the middle eight that I sing in Tumor.

00:03:38 --> 00:03:41 So I think it's a little bit like if you're writing a script.
00:03:41 --> 00:03:45 If you're delivering things in the way that you would speak, it feels much more comfortable.

00:04:22 --> 00:04:25 But to be fair, I mean, those ad-libs are hot.

00:04:47 --> 00:04:51 Your debut album, Northern Star, was moody, atmospheric, and rock influenced.
00:04:51 --> 00:04:59 Going down was quite a shocking launch, and you got two UK number ones with Never Be The Same Again and I Turn To You.
00:04:59 --> 00:05:03 So what was it trying to figure out your musical identity outside of
00:05:03 --> 00:05:05 That's what you are.
00:05:05 --> 00:05:06 Yeah, oh my God.
00:05:06 --> 00:05:07 Totally.
00:05:07 --> 00:05:17 So it was, I think, like musically, because even though like with the Spice Girls, collectively what we created was very different to who we are as individuals.
00:05:18 --> 00:05:23 You know, you were never having to compromise, but your energy was something different as a group of people.
00:05:24 --> 00:05:32 So it was really nice to go on my own in the studio, really just have this like voyage of self-discovery, musically, lyrically, thematically.
00:05:33 --> 00:05:35 And I love to make a Northern Star.
00:05:35 --> 00:05:36 I'm so proud of the album.
00:05:37 --> 00:05:40 And yeah, it was just like so exciting.
00:05:40 --> 00:05:43 But I think it was like a discovery.
00:05:43 --> 00:05:44 It was like, who am I?
00:05:44 --> 00:05:46 Who am I if I'm not with the Spice Girls?

00:05:48 --> 00:05:52 I know I'm Sporty Spice, but there's other sides to me and I need to express that.
00:05:52 --> 00:05:57 And I think sometimes that was confusing for me as a human, not just as an artist.
00:05:57 --> 00:06:08 So yeah, I've kind of, I've had many eras, but I'm very happy to be back in a comfortable space, embracing Sporty and yeah, never letting her go again.
00:06:08 --> 00:06:09 I respect that.
00:06:10 --> 00:06:18 So while you were promoting Northern Star, work was being done on the third Spice Girls album, Forever, you have spoken about, you weren't really feeling it at the time.
00:06:18 --> 00:06:21 And we can hear it in the music that you're just not as present.
00:06:21 --> 00:06:24 Now looking back, how do you feel about that project?
00:06:24 --> 00:06:27 Yeah, you know, I feel like it was a really difficult time.
00:06:28 --> 00:06:29 I love that album.
00:06:29 --> 00:06:35 I think there's some really beautiful songs on there that we still would perform when we did our stadium shows in 2019.
00:06:36 --> 00:06:38 Tracks like Holla, Let Lovely The Way.
00:06:38 --> 00:06:40 There's some bangers on there, right?
00:06:40 --> 00:06:45 But at that time for me, I had a lot of success with Northern Star,
00:06:45 --> 00:06:49 but I was having a lot of personal issues that I was facing.
00:06:49 --> 00:06:52 You know, I'd had an eating disorder when I was in the band.
00:06:52 --> 00:07:00 I was struggling with anxiety and depression and whilst working a record, you know, and then being pulled back into the studio with the Spice Girls.
00:07:01 --> 00:07:14 So it was like, there was this really tricky time to navigate and it was, you know, it was interesting back then because we didn't really talk about mental health issues as we do now, thank goodness that stigma has lifted and we're much more open about these things.
00:07:15 --> 00:07:19 And there was, you know, being British as well, there was a kind of a keep calm and carry on, you know.
00:07:19 --> 00:07:23 So I kind of worked through this whole phase when I really probably should have had a break.
00:07:24 --> 00:07:29 But I think, you know, when you have issues like that, if you're not ready to face them, you can run away from them.
00:07:29 --> 00:07:32 And work is the perfect way to do that.
00:07:32 --> 00:07:32 Yes, girl.
00:07:32 --> 00:07:33 Yeah.
00:07:33 --> 00:07:36 So, yeah, that little workaholic in there.
00:07:36 --> 00:07:41 So, yeah, there was definitely a moment of, yeah, of kind of...
00:07:42 --> 00:07:44 day to day, just living day to time.
00:07:45 --> 00:07:50 So yeah, I look back at that time thinking some beautiful things came from it, but it was hard.
00:07:51 --> 00:07:52 It was really hard, you know?

00:08:31 --> 00:08:37 But speaking of Beautiful Intentions was your first album on your own label after leaving Virgin.
00:08:37 --> 00:08:41 And we've both worked on label side, so we get the whole workload.
00:08:41 --> 00:08:46 But once you were finally fully in charge, what did that freedom give you creatively?
00:08:46 --> 00:08:48 And what did nobody warn you about?
00:08:49 --> 00:08:50 Oh, gosh.
00:08:50 --> 00:08:56 I mean, I think it was a really important step for me to take because I'd had such a good relationship with Virgin Records.
00:08:56 --> 00:09:03 Obviously, two, three very successful Spice Girls records and then a very successful debut solo album.
00:09:04 --> 00:09:08 My second album as a solo artist didn't do as well as they'd hoped.
00:09:08 --> 00:09:08 I mean...
00:09:08 --> 00:09:11 God, we'd love for those figures these days, right?
00:09:11 --> 00:09:12 Everything was changed.
00:09:12 --> 00:09:21 But it was very hard, you know, to be released from my contract at that point because I just thought, where's the loyalty, guys?
00:09:21 --> 00:09:24 I've sold you millions of bloody records, right?
00:09:25 --> 00:09:29 And so that was, I think that was quite hurtful as a young person and a young artist.
00:09:29 --> 00:09:33 So I wanted to go as far away from where I'd been as I could.
00:09:33 --> 00:09:37 And to me that was self financing, becoming an independent artist.
00:09:37 --> 00:09:39 So I loved the freedom.
00:09:39 --> 00:09:41 You know, I didn't have to answer to anybody.
00:09:41 --> 00:09:49 I didn't have to try and make a song that sounded a little bit like this artist and a little bit like that artist and whatever artist was like doing great things at the time.
00:09:49 --> 00:09:52 And yeah, I just created a rock album.
00:09:52 --> 00:09:54 There was a lot of anger, the girl needed to get this out.
00:09:55 --> 00:09:56 And you know, it was fun.
00:09:56 --> 00:10:04 I toured that record before I recorded it, which was like a way a lot of rock bands do and artists have done in the past.
00:10:04 --> 00:10:06 And that was actually really, really fun.
00:10:06 --> 00:10:08 And it was a really interesting way to work.
00:10:09 --> 00:10:11 We recorded a lot of the tracks like live in the studio
00:10:12 --> 00:10:21 And, yeah, I think it's been important for me as an artist, like, growing in the way that I have, to just try these different versions of things.
00:10:22 --> 00:10:25 But then with this album, it's been lovely.
00:10:25 --> 00:10:28 I'm actually back with Virgin Records after all this time.
00:10:29 --> 00:10:30 But it's a very different model.
00:10:31 --> 00:10:33 You know, they're very artist-like.
00:10:35 --> 00:10:39 centric now, we get much better deals, it's more of a distribution deal.
00:10:39 --> 00:10:44 So I'm very fortunate as an artist because of the success I had with the Spice Girls.
00:10:44 --> 00:10:53 I am financially stable and I can make music, but lean on a major label for the international infrastructure.
00:10:53 --> 00:10:56 Sorry if it's getting a little bit too technical and music industry.
00:10:56 --> 00:10:56 No, we do that on our show.

00:11:00 --> 00:11:05 The thing is, you know, for any artists, you know, who are tuning in, it's like, it's an ever evolving beast.

00:11:06 --> 00:11:16 And we just need to be open because I don't think I've ever, apart from like the early Spice Girls days, when there was a formula that major labels followed, that worked.

00:11:21 --> 00:11:22 How you promote it's different.
00:11:22 --> 00:11:23 How you make it's different.

00:11:25 --> 00:11:30 So you have to be really open as an artist and really understand nothing stays the same.

00:11:47 --> 00:11:51 And as we were telling you, we both ended up some of your DJ gigs and had a lot of fun.
00:11:52 --> 00:11:54 And then the self-titled record in 2020, which we love.

00:12:00 --> 00:12:03 Yeah, I think because I wanted to go in more of an electronic direction.
00:12:04 --> 00:12:07 And with version of me, it was more experimental.
00:12:08 --> 00:12:13 And yeah, I was working to a quite tight budget on that record as well.
00:12:13 --> 00:12:17 So, you know, it was fun and it was a good another exploration.
00:12:17 --> 00:12:20 And then, you know, the DJing was getting more and more.
00:12:21 --> 00:12:25 And yeah, I was being more inspired and seeing things from a very different perspective.
00:12:26 --> 00:12:28 And that was where Melanie C came from.
00:12:29 --> 00:12:33 And that dropped in the pandemic, which was an interesting time for all of us.
00:12:34 --> 00:12:36 And a super interesting time to release music.
00:12:37 --> 00:12:39 And excuse me, I was doing lots of like,
00:12:40 --> 00:12:51 live streams and different things, you know, trying to stay connected, you know, to the world, to the fan base, but, you know, to people, to not feel so lonely.
00:12:51 --> 00:12:53 So that was a good time for me.
00:12:53 --> 00:12:56 And then I think on this album, I have a new team around me.
00:12:56 --> 00:12:58 I have a new management team.
00:12:59 --> 00:13:01 And I think just everything fell into place.

00:13:11 --> 00:13:16 I fully understood just like the whole aesthetic that I wanted to create as well as the sound.
