00:00:00 --> 00:00:09 Four decades, countless hits, and now she's returned to form as an independent artist. We're talking about Mariah Carey, and honey, we are here for it all.

00:00:12 --> 00:00:32 We reached over 5 subscribers on YouTube. Thank you all so much for joining the CCTV crew. And if you're on a podcast platform, please give us a rating, follow, and share the episode. It really helps us grow and find all the global pop fans with great taste. Yes. Because obviously, if you listen to Mariah Carey, you have great taste. Hello. Hello.

00:00:33 --> 00:00:53 A big special shout out to our Patreon crew members as well. We'll give you a shout out towards the end of the show because now this group has just gotten huge. If you would also like to be part of our Patreon crew, you can come over at patreon.com slash cctvpots to support the show, hang out with us for some exclusive live sessions, and of course, request episode topics as well.

00:00:54 --> 00:01:14 That's right. All right, so let's get into Here For It All. This is Mariah Carey's 16th studio album release September 2025. It was executive produced with L.A. Reid, and the album features an eclectic mix of genres and marks Mariah's first studio album release since 2018's Caution.

00:01:14 --> 00:01:33 The album hit number seven on the U.S. Billboard 200 and number 31 on the U.K.'s albums chart. So let's enter this era of me and discuss the production, vocals, visuals, performances, and then drop our individual ratings. But viewer discretion is advised. Your fave will be criticized.

00:01:35 --> 00:01:51 Before we get into the album build, let's talk about this album cover. Yes. Okay. We have this little black and white moment. You've got the wind flowing through her hair. Her eyes are closed. Yes. What do you think? I'm here. Okay. No pun intended. Oh, my goodness. I know.

00:01:52 --> 00:02:18 Now we have to avoid saying it. I know. It's kind of like very cheesy and saccharine. But no, I'm here for it. Because like it's giving old, like older. Timeless. Yeah. It's just kind of like, oh my God, I'm so happy. I'm jubilant. It's effortless. It's black and white. So it's giving classic. You have this giant marquee diamond on her neck, which is alluding to the looks like that she's living. But then you have the classic butterfly. We all know she's all about the butterflies. Yeah.

00:02:18 --> 00:02:43 You know, so I think I appreciate how simplistic everything looks. But then you have these pops of like, I'm rich. I've earned this. Yes, I've earned this. But honey, I'm rich. And don't you forget it. But I'm also very happy. You know? Yes, that's what it is, too. Yeah, I think she looks so genuinely happy. It's almost like this was shot like right after the album was finished. She's like listening to the final mixes for the first time or something.

00:02:43 --> 00:03:04 Yeah, I love the shot. And I agree with you. I think it just does look very classy. It does stand out as a photo as well. Like I think you saw it on the shelves. Yeah, it's so pretty. So yes, I am also here for it. Am I giving Mariah? Am I giving Mimi? You wish. No, I'm gay. Oh, dang. My heart's broken. Okay.

00:03:06 --> 00:03:21 I mean, we did say viewer discretion is advised. Here we are. Even for the hosts. All right, guys. So let's get into it. Track by track. All right. We're going to start with me. And this was done by Mariah Carey, Ray Romulus, Jonathan Yip.

00:03:21 --> 00:03:38 Luke Milano, Jeremy Reeves, Jeff Baranowski, and Felicia King of Cherish. And it was produced by Mariah, The Stereotypes, and 9AM. And Mariah describes this as a tongue-in-cheek ode to self-love and self-care.

00:03:43 --> 00:04:11 All right. Here we are with me. Yes. The lyrics are great in this. That is really the best part of this song, I would say. She's always embodied this kind of character. Well, you know, where she, you know, she is the D.I.V.A. Like she knows her value. She knows what she wants. She's not going to compromise on certain things. Right. But, you know, she's also nice about it. Like, you know, she's also like, I'm also good company.

00:04:11 --> 00:04:40 Yeah, that's right. I love that. Good time, honey. Yeah, yeah, yeah. My favorite lyric is for sure the last line of the pre-chorus, that you couldn't walk a mile in my shoes. And then the background vocals go, because they hurt like hell. She's so funny. Oh my God, it's so funny. So yes, I love the lyrics of it, but I will say the actual song itself in terms of production and melody is only okay for me. Yeah. Because I feel like if you weren't listening to the lyrics...

00:04:41 --> 00:05:10 it doesn't really grab your attention. So as an intro, it's like, it's calm, and I guess it does ease you into it, but it doesn't actually make that much impact for me as an actual song. And in the vocal delivery as well, I think because it's so chill and kind of nonchalant, it kind of loses the tongue-in-cheekness of the lyrics. Like, I wish there was just a little bit more of a sass in there, or I don't know, just something to kind of make it a bit more playful. Like, the song itself is maybe just a bit...

00:05:10 --> 00:05:27 too serious for me. Oh, really? Yeah. I kind of wish it was like a little like, I don't know. I wish there was just a bit more energy to it, I think. You know what? I did kind of liken this song to, it's like that. And I know what you mean. She was in her like,

00:05:27 --> 00:05:47 brand new, I don't know you kind of bag. So I get that. I was like, I get what you mean with the attitude because she kind of was doing this airy, breathy thing and there wasn't a lot of like just clear chest voice where she can kind of just be a little bit more punchy. So I think I get what you mean with the sass. But I think with Mariah for this, it's kind of more like...

00:05:47 --> 00:06:12 a classy sass so it's like i'm not gonna raise my voice honey i'm not it's gonna stay right here you know that's fair yeah so that's i get what you mean uh i totally get what you mean though now as you're saying i'm like oh perspective um i think this is very much diva soaking in the hot tub you know she's mentioned that she envisioned herself in a hot tub with this and i get it this is emancipation's future self settled in and enjoying her life right it's like it has nothing to do with me

00:06:12 --> 00:06:35 Do re mi mi mi. This definitely sets the tone of the album in terms of what to expect, which I think is good. Setting healthy expectations for the album because it's understated. It's not anything really big. It's settled in. Lines like, I'm the movie and the muse. I am the inspiration. I don't need to do anything except...

00:06:35 --> 00:06:52 be me me you know so it's like at this point it's like hello here i am take it or leave it because i like me you know um and i like that she is dropping brand names because there is a

00:06:52 --> 00:07:22 You know, people are saying, it's like, girl, you're a billionaire. What do you mean? Like, you can't do this, like, I'm a normal girl thing anymore. I'm like, you can, but, like, be real about it, you know? And I appreciate that Mariah, as long as she's been around, she's always been very glamorous. Even when she's rocking, like, you know, something really cute and, you know, like fantasy, wearing a little jacket and some little roller skates. There was always something very glamorous about her, very pretty about her. And now she's like, I'm rich. I'm dropping the brand names. And she's painting this very, like, smexy picture of her luxurious life.

00:07:22 --> 00:07:47 So it's giving luxury. It sounds like luxury, right? So she doesn't need to be relatable. And that's why I like the song. She's not trying to be relatable. She's like, I'm me for a reason. She's a diva. And there's not a struggle to sing about. Why would I struggle? You know, so I think in terms of tone and what she's trying to say, good for a start. But I do agree with you. Execution, because we want more.

00:07:47 --> 00:08:14 Should have been a little bit more, but I also can understand why it's kind of where it is. You know, it's hard. Yeah. All right. So what do you rate this one? It's a little down the road for me. I gave it a seven, but, you know, don't be bad. Okay. I also gave it a seven. And for everyone listening, if you have a different opinion, we'd love to hear it. So give us your ratings and comments for all these songs, too. Yes. Opinion, not weird, strange insults at our taste.

00:08:14 --> 00:08:27 No, I'm serious. Like, if you're going to Sonoma and say we have no taste, tell us why. And back it up with facts. Yes, that's true. You feel me? Yes. Yes. Give us something to think about. Right. What do you think? Yeah. Okay.

00:08:28 --> 00:08:57 All right, let's move on to track two, which is Play This Song featuring Anderson Paak. And this was done by Mariah Carey, Daniel Moore II, and Anderson Paak. And Mariah really liked the vibe of the Silk Sonic project. So she reached out to Anderson to work with her. And he reached back. And that developed. They got more than a studio session. Oh, well. Out of that. Okay, so yes. What do you think of Play This Song? Play This Song.

00:09:04 --> 00:09:31 All right, so got this vibe and the sound of a groovy, lush instrumentation, R&B, 70s soul. I mean, it's not super far from what Mariah grew up listening to, right? Like, I mean, childhood Mariah, growing up in Long Island, listening to stuff like this. So Clonic, obviously having this huge moment as a duo. It's like, I do appreciate the flavor and the warmth being brought in now because it's like,

00:09:31 --> 00:09:48 We're going to say it now. I'm going to say it now. Mariah's voice has changed. End of story. Right. So it's not going to sound the way it did X amount of years ago. So what can we do to make sure that it sounds good and that the instrumentation is complementing what's happening?

00:09:48 --> 00:10:08 introducing Anderson Puck. That's what it feels like. And I appreciate that there wasn't, like, this attempt to make her come across as, like, this soaring songbird as opposed to a chanteuse. A little less elusive than usual. Hello. So I feel like instead of Silksonic, we got maybe Velvet Volume, you know? Like, okay.

00:10:10 --> 00:10:28 a little bit of flirtation. There's a little bit of distance as well in terms of it. Cause there's a, there's a little bit of cheekiness in it. And I think it's because Anderson Pox own style. I mean, if you think about what Silksonics lyricism, it was never just like this one topic. It's like, you know, bad kids and breaking up with a girl. It's never something simple. Um,

00:10:28 --> 00:10:56 But yeah, I think like I like the lyrical content of having both of them sing as the party. I was like, we might get back together, but we're probably not going to, you know, it's not going to happen. So I think that is good to have that dynamic. It feels like an actual duet. It doesn't feel phoned in. But yeah, I feel like the whole idea of this is her sending like a little mixtape, a vinyl one, of course, to her former lover and be like, if you don't get this, we're done.

00:10:56 --> 00:11:13 You know, I like the pairing. It's soulful. It's a conversation, not really a fight. But, you know, there's serious feelings there. And I think, again, it kind of goes with the tone of the album and where Mariah might be mentally like maybe she's not. She's done with the rigmarole of the arguing. It's just...

00:11:13 --> 00:11:34 Here's a choice that you have to make. If you don't make it, okay, fine. You know? I will say, do not like the lack of chorus. Like, play that song, play the song on repeat thing. Like, I don't mind that. Yeah, my bad. Not repeat, my bad. I said repeat. But the point is, sorry, guys. But the point is, I was like, this is the chorus.

00:11:34 --> 00:11:47 you know yeah i can't say i like the the lack of a chorus i mean i don't hate it um it's okay uh but the rest of the song i'm like cool i'm i love the background vocals you know things are it's nice nice song

00:11:47 --> 00:12:11 I'm not mad at that kind of one line being the chorus because I think with the way they produced it with all the vocal layers and kind of the way they kind of they make you kind of focus in on it every time it happens like with the production. And so I don't mind it is memorable, I would say, even though it's very simple. It's hard to call one line a chorus, but as a hook, I think it works.

00:12:13 --> 00:12:28 But yeah, Anderson, Pac has such a great style. Like it's so smooth. It does balance the kind of retro and modern really, really well. And yeah, I agree with you in that it does feel like a true duet and they balance each other well vocally. Mm-hmm.

00:12:28 --> 00:12:53 Because he also kept it quite light. He kind of matched her energy here, which was good. There was no out singing each other. It was all very balanced. I also enjoy the way they actually produced Mariah's vocal on this one. They use her octaves quite a lot. She'll do the lower octave with the higher octave. She's always had such a cool tone. And I will say with the vocal changes that she has had,

00:12:54 --> 00:13:22 her lower register has actually developed quite nicely. Like it's a lot thicker now. There's a husk to it. There's a warmth to it. Yeah. There's a nice body to it. So I actually threw up this whole album. I'll mention it a few times, but I actually prefer the kind of lower register stuff where it feels just a bit more relaxed than some of the kind of more belty moments that happen later on. But yeah, I think this is good. It grew on me quite a lot. I will say the first time I heard it, I was kind of like,

00:13:22 --> 00:13:42 oh yeah yeah and i think i i think i also i forget if it was just a teaser video or if it was the actual music video but like that music video is so boring oh yeah so i think that also just it just didn't catch my attention you know so i was kind of my first reaction to it was just okay it's a

00:13:43 --> 00:14:03 Yeah, yeah, I felt that way too. And I was like, hmm. But it has grown on me as I've listened to it more. Yeah, what did you think of the music video? I guess the music video was kind of the official hard launch of their relationship. I mean, my nose behind. They were kind of just rumored before that, right? Oh, okay. Well, my nose behind been known.

00:14:04 --> 00:14:18 So dozy. I think I mentioned this before. I mentioned this before, remember? When we did our Emancipation of Mimi. So guys, we did the Emancipation of Mimi, including the deluxe platinum super platinum diamond version of it.

00:14:19 --> 00:14:39 But yeah, we did it. And I mentioned, I was like, oh, her new boo. Like, he didn't have a name. No disrespect. It was just something funny, I said. But point is, the video reminded me of, like, one of those couples that got married and they give everyone a montage. Like, even they pokes it on social media. That's what it felt like. They got married. And then this was, like, their, like...

00:14:39 --> 00:14:55 in the midst of them taking photos with each other, like, the camera person was like, oh, just dance around and play, I'll take candid shots. That's what it felt like, you know? Like, the groom takes his photo, and he's like, you know, his little sunglasses, the bride's standing there in her little rhinestone situation, and then they come together. You know what I'm talking about.

00:14:55 --> 00:15:17 those weddings that's what it felt like did nothing for the video i i i'm happy that she has found a little booting yeah you know it's cute we love that for her yeah there's definitely chemistry i think what i i didn't mind the way it was shot but i didn't like that it was all slow-mo the whole time yeah again i was kind of just distracted by the lips that fully matching

00:15:18 --> 00:15:33 as well. Right, the whole life's not going together. Yeah, because they do it, like, double time, right? And then slow it back down. So, it's just, it was like, okay, well, that doesn't match. You know, I was just like, that bothered me. Yeah, I was really...

00:15:33 --> 00:15:50 I'm very distracted usually by bad lip syncing That's so funny I mean, okay So speaking of like, you know, bad lip syncing Lip slaps not matching and such We got a live vocal of them Yes, on Jimmy Fallon On a late night show Yeah, so

00:15:50 --> 00:16:10 How do we feel about the performance? I mean, I will say her VMA performance, she was a little bit more, like, present. Yeah. But for the performance, the late show, it was just... She sounded great. Beautiful gowns. She sounded good. She also made a bit of a vocal change in the second verse that I actually quite liked. Yes. Yeah, I think...

00:16:10 --> 00:16:29 She just looked a little scared. Not scared. Nervous. She just looked a bit nervous. Which is understandable. You know, she hasn't done a late night performance in a while. Yeah. And it's just... And I guess it was the week of the album launch as well. So maybe there's a lot going on in her head. But it felt...

00:16:30 --> 00:16:47 I think because Anderson was really trying to kind of engage with her. Yes. He was giving cute smiles and really looking at her and she wasn't really giving anything back. So I think that was kind of where it got a little lost for me. But I agree with you in that she sounded pretty good.

00:16:47 --> 00:17:12 Yes, I was happy to hear. I was like, go ahead, girl. Yeah. Go ahead, girl. But yes, I think this song was a good one. I think this one's a little bit better than the previous track. So yeah, this finally given her a higher score. I'm going to give her one an eight. Okay, I also have it as an eight. Yeah. Oof. I wouldn't have gotten a higher score for you now. I'm curious. Because me, I think mine's pretty obvious. I don't know. I feel like you know me pretty well. I think my...

00:17:13 --> 00:17:39 My highest one is pretty obvious. I think most of the fans would probably agree as well, but we'll see. Ooh, interesting. Okay, cool, cool, cool. Yeah. All right. Up next is Tight Dangerous, and this was done by Mariah Carey, Anderson Paak, Ray Khalil, J-Mo, Daniel Moore II, JLVS, Eric B. and Rakim, and it was produced by Mariah, Toby Wigway, and Daniel Moore II. And this song samples Eric B. as president by Eric B.

00:17:46 --> 00:18:11 This is the lead single from the album released June 2025. And this won Best R&B Music Video at NTV, VMAs, and the video features a cameo from Mr. Beast. Remixes were done featuring Busta Rhymes, Method Man and Redman, Big Shot, DJ Snake, and Luisa Sonza. So this is the big song. This is the big push. How do we feel about Type Dangerous? Is it Type Good or Type Bad?

00:18:11 --> 00:18:34 I will say Mariah has had some great samples throughout her career. So this is actually a cool one to add to the list. I like the way that they interpreted it. I like this song. I don't love this song. I think it's cool. I think the chorus is catchy. It is quite simple yet again. I think the verses kind of let this one down personally. Yeah.

00:18:34 --> 00:19:02 Um, like the melody, I don't know, the melodies just don't really do anything for me. And again, kind of what I was saying with me, it's not as, I don't know, there's like an energy that I kind of want that it's not really giving. Um, because again, there is some tongue in cheekness to this song as well. Like, especially in the second verse, like those lyrics are quite funny. Yeah. Yeah. She talks about all the different men and all the crap that they get into. Mm-hmm.

00:19:03 --> 00:19:23 But it doesn't feel like she's like emoting that. Oh, I know what you mean. Yeah. Yeah. So I think, I don't know. There's just something kind of lacking there. I do love the way she does execute the chorus though, where it gets kind of breathy and kind of warmer. Yeah. But the verses for some reason don't really give me what I want. Yeah.

00:19:23 --> 00:19:46 There are some nice ad-libs and stuff, though. But, yeah. I will say, though, I much prefer the remakes of The Gods, which is the one with Busta, Redman, and Method Man. Who? Because, you know, obviously she is known for the hip-hop collaborations as well. Yeah. And I think having them come in does give it a bit of that energy lift and some more attitude.

00:19:46 --> 00:20:16 that I think the song needs. Yeah. Yeah. You know what? Interestingly enough, I'm like, where is the rap feature? It would have been interesting because you're talking about a dangerous type. I mean, not saying all rappers are dangerous, but it does bring an edge that may have been missing. Like you said, like, oh, wow. Oh, you're so right. Well, in my opinion, you're right. So, but no, I agree. I think with this kind of song, because it is so chill on her part, it is meant to be like this jazzy kind of like um, um,

00:20:16 --> 00:20:41 like boom bap moment back in her like sample pockets i get it but you're right i think with the wrappers on it it kind of adds a little more of like a oh bonnie and clyde moment and i think that's what may have been like the key ingredient for me um it is edgy i appreciate it you're

00:20:42 --> 00:21:11 I have moments that I like in the verses, interestingly enough, but I get what you're saying. Like, I feel like in the second verse, there's a call back to emancipation. Like, we belong together. Like, she's in the castle with that one guy. She escapes with, you know, Wentworth. Was that Wentworth? What's that mean? Yeah, that's right. Yeah. I think of J.G. Wentworth. It's a- Wentworth Miller. Okay, good. I'll close right. I just, I kept doubting his name because of that commercial. But yeah, so you have, you have Keith Roberts-

00:21:12 --> 00:21:28 Eric Roberts as the man in the castle, motorcycle guy, Wentworth, and then you have the geek squad dude from Touch My Body because she's talking about someone on the computer, talking about someone on the... You know what I'm saying? I feel like it's all kind of slight callbacks. I could be wrong, but I feel like she's not the one to play that game of...

00:21:28 --> 00:21:49 not mentioning things like that without actually having a reason. I feel like I might be right. Lambs, let me know if that resonates with you. I love the slick, the two slick Rick moments that she has, where she says, like, knock him out the box. Cause there's not come up the box, Rick, knock him out the box. And then she says, and came three, Hey, and,

00:21:49 --> 00:22:05 you know girls who don't know the meaning of water nor soap and that's from the bedtime story song with um slick rake so she is definitely someone who's like i like these songs i know i'm a pop diva but i also am partially black

00:22:05 --> 00:22:31 And it's like when you're a fan of her, it's like you kind of have to remember that sometimes. And then she pulls lyrics out like this and you're like, okay. She loves this stuff. She's part of it. She's always been sampling hip-hop. She blends all of this together. You know, nods to the roots and respect for musical forebearers and such. We love that for her. She is, you know, the queen of that, I will say. Her and Janet's samples are always my favorite. I will. Like, I love them. But, yeah, I feel like...

00:22:31 --> 00:22:36 the video helped me a little bit, like the song some more. Yeah. Um, performances,

00:22:37 --> 00:23:03 Not so much, but the video definitely helped because everything was super smooth and glossy, you know? Yeah. And I love that for her. She deserves to be smooth and glossy. Yeah. No, the music video is super entertaining for sure. All the different scenes. I will say some of the effects, like the animated versions of her felt a little unnecessary. Because I thought there was enough with what she was doing that they didn't need all that. But honestly, she looked amazing in every single look. Oh, my gosh.

00:23:03 --> 00:23:23 She loves a good light. She knows. She knows. I understand, though. It's like, hello, why is my face not illuminated? I'm sitting here looking crazy. Hello. Oh, yeah. But, yeah, I love how genuine her smiles has been in the video. You know, I think that has been a commentary. Like, things are not connecting. But, like, it was there for her. I think Joseph Kahn worked on the video, right? Right.

00:23:24 --> 00:23:52 Oh, that would make sense. You know, so it's like she knows the dude. Like, you know, we know his work. We know how gorgeous he makes things look. That's Janet Jackson's videos. That's Britney's videos. Taylor Swift's recent videos. Like me and the other song where she's like dancing in the middle of the street in the hotel. I do not know the song. But yes, that's why those those scenes are gorgeous. Yeah. You know, shout out to him for that as well. But yeah, so the whole package, the song, what are we giving it, bud?

00:23:53 --> 00:24:12 I have it as a 7.5. Mine's out of 7. Okay. Okay. All right, let's move on to Sugar Sweet. And this was done by Mariah Carey, Felicia King, Harv, Dizzy Clean Face, and Mikkel Miller. And this was released as the second single from the album in July 2025. Bye.

00:24:19 --> 00:24:46 Sugar Sweet. I don't know how I feel about this one. But I will say that it is breezy, lighter in the tone. You know, it's sunny, sortacious. And I appreciate that. I would say there's the trendy sonic thing. It fits. I mean, it's not her trying too hard to fit the trend. You know, chasing the sound of what's hip and current, which I appreciate. Yeah.

00:24:46 --> 00:24:58 But yeah, like I feel like the collaborators also do make sense. This is like that soft charm versus assertive sass kind of track. Like you have sugar and kindness, but like you're not a doormat. It's just like I want to do something with you.

00:24:59 --> 00:25:16 Put me in your mouth like a candy. I love Kehlani's verse on this. I feel like Kehlani's verse is the best. She is so good. I like how versatile her voice is. She's got the sweet voice and didn't have to do too much. Tensia...

00:25:16 --> 00:25:46 Hello. She's a dance hall queen. She has a great voice. So fun. Yeah, I love her verse. You're a vast, but a lot of, not a lot of Jamaican women have, but like when I used to listen to singers like Patra and stuff like that, like she had a rasp to her voice. Even when she was singing, it was really sensual. It just felt like, oof, girl, she's not playing with you. Come through. I think all together, like this is going to be a very corny candy, you know, analogy for everyone's voice. But like Mimi has like the chocolatey sound, the velvet, the warmth.

00:25:46 --> 00:26:04 You know, Kalani's bringing that juicy flavor of like a red vine where it's kind of bouncy here and there. It's still very tight. It's still sweet. It's light flavor. And then Shansia was a tamarind ball, honey. It's tangy. It's sweet. You know, give it a little kick. Like the combos here make sense. And I know it sounds so silly, guys, but if you've ever had a tamarind ball.

00:26:04 --> 00:26:24 Thank you. Yeah. This is why we're, this is why we're co-hosts. This is why. But yeah, I think it makes sense. You know what I'm saying? Because Mariah, like I've mentioned before, has, her voice has changed, you know, and she's welcomed newer voices onto her track. She is, we could say, a fan of these people. So it feels...

00:26:24 --> 00:26:48 Nice. You know, she's also being linked to a newer generation or a newer set of fans or people like, oh, my God, Mariah Carey, I haven't heard her since Touch My Body or Obsessed on TikTok. And this is that generation that would be listening to Kehlani, to Shensia. She could flex with what's current and still onto her classic status because she wasn't out here trying to out-sink Kehlani. Kehlani can say her booty off, but she didn't do too much. And then no one was doing too, too much.

00:26:49 --> 00:27:12 But I can say like tonally, who did I like more? I can say Kaylon. You know what I'm saying? So it's one of those things where it's like, I can admit that, but I can also say it didn't feel like Mariah was getting like, you know, punched down on her own song. Yeah. That's valid. Yeah. I actually really like this song. I like how lush it is. I like the kind of summery breeziness you were mentioning. And that chorus definitely gets in your head.

00:27:12 --> 00:27:41 for sure yeah yeah um and i love the way mariah actually sounds in that chorus like the balance of that kind of head voice kind of like breathiness and that she does have a bit of more of a belty little moment the second half of the chorus as well um i don't love the execution in the verses but yeah i do um yeah i do think shansia's verse is the best part of the song oh okay it does elevate it a bit um yeah

00:27:41 --> 00:28:07 I think Kehlani sounds really good as well. I think it makes sense on paper to kind of have her on the song. I don't know if she really actually added that much to the song. I don't know. Because I like her verse. I just, this, you know how we were saying like Anderson and Pac felt like, it felt like a genuine duet, right? Play the song. This one did feel like it was like a, we need another name on the song, so let's.

00:28:07 --> 00:28:24 I can see what you're meaning yeah it felt just an organic collaboration I guess yeah I will say this has grown on me quite a lot I did watch some fan cams because she's been performing it at some of these like summer

00:28:24 --> 00:28:49 gigs that she's been doing i think she's touring in asia right now oh um and watching the dancers kind of like do all the grooves to it and stuff i was like oh okay that's fun like i was like i would learn i want to learn choreo to this and then there's a bit more energy with the live band and stuff in it as well yeah and um yeah there's like there's a nice groove to it so that actually made it grow on me more um but i do like it like every time it comes on i'm like happy to listen to you know

00:28:50 --> 00:29:06 Val, I hear you on that. But yeah, I get what you're meaning. I hope it was an organic situation. But yes, for me, I'm okay with this one. It's not like terrible. My score might be a little low for now, but for now it's like 7.5 for me. Okay, I gave it an 8.

00:29:07 --> 00:29:34 The next one might be... The next one might be... In Your Feelings. The next song is In Your Feelings. And this was done by Mariah Carey, Anderson .Paak, Roger, Shayed, and Ray Khalil. I think you might be getting a little bit too in your feelings. I think you might get... What is it? I think you might be getting a little bit too.

00:29:35 --> 00:29:46 Wow, the fail. That was so bad. I'm sorry. No, we tried. We tried this. It is such a fun cadence. I love the syncopation of it. It's so much fun. Yeah.

00:29:48 --> 00:30:17 Yeah, I really like this one. Yeah, Anderson, honestly, great collaborator for her. Great choice. I'm glad, you know, it ended up developing into more. But I'm glad they just had so many sessions together. Yeah. Because it does feel very natural as a sound for Mariah. Oh, yeah. In general. But yeah, I really like this. I think the production is great. It feels super organic. There's a lot of drama in it. Like the drums. I was just listening to it just for the drums a few times. Because whoever did it.

00:30:18 --> 00:30:47 Killed that. Killed that. The bridge is also so, so silksonic with the la-la-las and the oohs and stuff. You can just hear Bruno on that as well. Yeah. But then the band is going off and the strings and everything are coming in. And then she does that big belt and then it's like silence before that little moment again. It's so good. Like the whole structure of it is great. Really good melodies throughout this. I will say my only critique...

00:30:47 --> 00:31:04 I don't like the ending. Ending. Thank you. I was hoping you'd say it. I was like, say it again. Say it again. Yeah, it just ends. It just ends. Yeah. I think you might just... That's not how it ends. People, if you haven't heard this a lot, that's not how it ends. Oh, yeah.

00:31:06 --> 00:31:25 Oh, yeah. By the way, also, I know we're talking about the song a lot and we are making this review without the music because people get copyright strikes. But if you are listening to this, you're like, where's the song? We can't put it in. But I wish we could, because when I tell you, I hate that ending. And I love repeating the thing. Can I get a little bit?

00:31:25 --> 00:31:54 I would love for people to hear it, especially if you haven't heard the album yet. You're just listening to us to kind of get an idea. I wish we could put it in there. But yeah, I think that part of the song is like the highlight. That's the moment that a lot of people kind of go, you know, like, I like that part. Cause all of a sudden you get this really fast staccato moment before this it gets like, it's, it, it slows down rather. Excuse me. I was stuttering like a mofo.

00:31:54 --> 00:32:24 But yeah, I feel like this is emotional, but reflective. I gave it my best shot, but it's over. I love how personal it sounds. I think for me, it sounds like she's in the room with the person or like in the lounge performing and they're sitting in the audience. And she's like, hey, listen, come to the show. Like, let's come to the show. I have a surprise for you. The plucking on the piano, I think in terms of production, is what gives it a bounce and

00:32:24 --> 00:32:35 trauma and making it feel like, oh, this is a relief. I just want to let you know, this was crap. This whole time was crap. I hated it.

00:32:35 --> 00:33:04 But I just want to let you know, I'm fine. You might not be because I'm breaking up with you, but I'm okay. And I think I appreciate that. It is stripped back a lot to let Mariah's vocals really shine and the lyrics kind of stand out more. I will say, like, I will say, like, so far, I'm happy that the vocals are in a range that she's comfortable with. I said it before. I'm probably going to say it again, but it's good that this is happening. But enough of the Soaring Songbird. Give me the rooted in this lower...

00:33:04 --> 00:33:34 register. It's okay if you cannot hit this note right now. Hit the notes you can and do them well. And she did in this song, I feel like. Yes. I like this, like, warmer, soulful place that she's sitting in. There's a slight key change. There's some vocalization in the little bridge section. That ending is abrupt. Nah, nah, nah, nah. I don't know if I thought about that one, but that's it. That kind of kills it for me and kind of took away a little bit of a... Took me out because I was in it and all of a sudden it was just clipped. Yeah. Mm-hmm.

00:33:34 --> 00:33:55 something I agree yes I think this is one of my favorites on this album I will give it a 9 oh wow I give this one I give it an 8 I give it an 8 yeah okay next is Nothing Is Impossible done by Mariah Carey and Daniel Moore the second

00:34:00 --> 00:34:15 All right. Nothing is impossible. Oh, this feels like classic. Mariah. Maria, is that you? Um, Maria. Um, I like the lyrics. I feel like, um...

00:34:16 --> 00:34:36 Now we're getting a little bit more real into her own personal feelings about things. I love a little bit of depth here. We love it. It's not too, too deep like some of the other tracks that come in the latter half of this album. But now we're starting to slow down, kind of get into what her mind is going through, what her heart is going through. Yeah.

00:34:36 --> 00:34:51 But the line, I weather the storm that most can't handle. The spirit lives in my soul. Lines like that. Like, not only is she a star. And I've been saying, like, she's lux. She's lux. She's a diva. But she's also a woman. She's a mother. She has a lot of love.

00:34:51 --> 00:35:08 a lot of personal things going on. She's human. And I think this is how she relates to us. Not saying that she's a goddess and like, you know, she's touching the plebs, you know, we're the lepers and she's blessing us. But if you think about it, there is a huge gap in lifestyle and who we are, just status, you know,

00:35:08 --> 00:35:30 Compared to her and like how can you relate as someone who's been around making music for four decades and it's like on a human level I feel like I can't do things or I have felt this way but I realize that nothing is impossible. It's it's listen we may not be as rich but we all have something that we believe in. It's uplifting it's resilient it's meaningful. Um.

00:35:30 --> 00:35:54 And I mean, I'm here for this also mezzo soprano thing that she's doing. Like, it's not bad. Like, we need to let go of the airy 20 year old. Because honestly, let's be real here. We need to accept this version of vocals that we have from the lovely Mariah Carey, whose age does not matter because time is an illusion. It doesn't exist. Her age doesn't exist. She's timeless. Because let's be real here.

00:35:54 --> 00:36:22 even on this album, but especially back in the day, she was giving us years of gratuitous vocals that some people's faves cannot even do now. And then you have some riffs and runs here and there. She belts in a way that fits her voice. And then, you know, we get some little whistle note loops, which made me wonder, does she have stock vocals on file? I'm not mad at it. No, she can still do the whistles, I think. I know, but it was just so funny because it was like...

00:36:25 --> 00:36:53 and it just kept going and I was like why are you not looping it it's okay but I'm not in that loop but the point is the girl's been gratuitous what she gives us is what she gives us crumbs that we get eat them up like little morsels of snacks or whatever but yeah I feel like this song I felt a little bit more connected it feels a little bit more it grounds this album it gives me that black and white of the album cover you know and not the marquee on the neck yeah

00:36:54 --> 00:37:19 Yeah, this does feel very Mariah. Like, you know, she just always knows how to do a good ballad, for sure. I will say my favorite part of the song, actually, is the strings. The string arrangement is so beautiful. Yeah. The way they come in on the second verse and the way it just builds from there is so satisfying. You know, I feel like Daniel Moore, the second...

00:37:20 --> 00:37:38 I guess he's just really good with this kind of, like, ethereal, kind of dreamy thing. Because even the way that this song starts is very calm and ethereal. Yeah. But then he knows how to, like, build up the drama. I think that seems to be a common thread throughout a lot of his songs. Yeah. Yeah, I think...

00:37:38 --> 00:37:55 You know, I mentioned the lower register earlier. She sounds so good in the verses and stuff here. I think as it does get into the belts and stuff, there is some strain there. But then it almost adds to the emotion. It's like, nothing is impossible. You know, it's like...

00:37:55 --> 00:38:14 It's like her voice is like she's like, you know, like so into it that her voice is going to give out, you know. Yeah. So I think it kind of worked in this context. But yeah, I think it's a pretty melody. You know, she has so many good ballads. It's hard to, you know, be as good as some of those. But, you know, this is a solid album track for sure.

00:38:15 --> 00:38:40 Yes. It is down the middle of the road. Like I said, all that gratuitousness, I can admit that this is not her best. And also, correcting myself, it's not a marquee. It looks like a little eye, y'all. This is a square cut. My bad. You can tell I'm broke. You can tell I'm broke. I don't even know how to cut the diamond was. Anyway. Okay. So, out of 10, I'm going to give this one a...

00:38:41 --> 00:39:11 7.5. I didn't make a little generous, but 7.5 for me. No, I'll match you. I'll give it a 7.5. Really? Oh, yeah. Those strings. Honestly, like part of what I was listening to it for on repeat was just to listen to the string. I don't blame you, man. I don't blame you. Yeah. All right. Now for my favorite song on the album, Confetti and Champagne. I stay surrounded by Confetti and Champagne.

00:39:13 --> 00:39:36 Done by Mariah Carey, Harv and Felicia King. By the way, guys, Felicia King and Harv are married. If you guys have never seen Hitmakers on Netflix, you can watch it. You don't have to. But Harv and Felicia are frequent collaborators. Harv works on a lot of good songs. But I can honestly say this is not one of them. I... Continue. Sorry. That's not where I thought this was going.

00:39:37 --> 00:39:59 Mr. Harv, Felicia, if y'all see this one day, no tea, no shade. It's not towards you. It's just this was not your strongest work. It's not bad either. But I think for this album, I just wasn't feeling it. I wasn't feeling it. So if you guys are wondering what Harv has done, he's done Peaches. He's done Fair by Normani.

00:39:59 --> 00:40:15 He did the sugar sweet track. You know what I'm saying? Like, you know, but yeah, yeah. I wasn't feeling this one too much only because it's like, I don't know how I feel about the trap kind of beat that's going on here. Yeah.

00:40:15 --> 00:40:32 I don't know. It just dates the song. It dates the song quite a bit for me. I don't mind the topic of the song, like where it's like before you, my life was parties and celebrations after you. My life is still parties and celebrations. And I get that. I'm,

00:40:33 --> 00:40:47 feel like that you know I went through a little something something myself and I'm people like oh my god you're gonna be so different now I'm like no I was doing exactly I'm doing exactly the same thing I was doing before I met this person it's just now I'm like you're gonna have to just watch me do it um but yeah I just yeah

00:40:47 --> 00:41:13 What I will say is I like that there might be a little bit of tea on this. She may not have said it, but my butt is nosy and stays in her business when it comes to dating because her last man was cute as heck. But anyway, point is, I know she doesn't talk about her relationships. I get it. But I do wonder if this was when it was inspired, like inspired by her breakup from the actor-dancer man. I'm not going to say his name, but they were together for a really long time. And as amicable as they may say the split was, I can imagine there was a little bit of...

00:41:13 --> 00:41:30 a little bit of sadness or something over the end of a long-term relationship. You know what I'm saying? Like, I like it. The song isn't sad. Like I said, it's more just like, before you, after you, I will still always be amazing. You will just have to watch me be that way. This is not my favorite song, but...

00:41:30 --> 00:41:52 I guess me needed a sister track. So cheers to her, I guess. But I will say that this is for me, the weaker vocal display on this album. I heard a vocal crack that just did not make sense there and should have been rerecorded. Doesn't mean she can't sing. It just means there was an, with my opinion, an accident that should not have remained. There's no need to sound broken.

00:41:52 --> 00:42:10 or weak in terms of vocal execution when that's not what this song is portraying. And it's in the first verse, like the first couple of seconds. And I'm like, dang, why is that there? Again, I could be wrong. Y'all can try to drag me, but you know what I'm talking about. You heard it too. I love you, Mariah. Kisses.

00:42:12 --> 00:42:37 Yeah, I mean, this is definitely the most modern, I guess, quote unquote, modern sounding song on here. Because, you know, a lot of R&B kind of sounds like this right now. Isn't the kind of R&B that I like? Oh, okay. Yeah, I think the melodies are just so not that catchy. Everybody in champagne.

00:42:38 --> 00:42:59 Yeah, I think calling it a sister track to me makes sense because I have some of the same comments. Like, again, if I did not read the lyrics to this, I would have no idea that this is what that song is about. Oh. This song does not feel celebratory. Oh, yeah. You know what I mean? And it doesn't even feel that...

00:42:59 --> 00:43:24 confident you know like the whole kind of like cheers to me not you just me i love that as a lyric i love that as a concept yeah they're like confetti and champagne doesn't make me think this vibe maybe it's meant to be like that way oh maybe we're wrong maybe she is a little bit sad about it but she don't know how to say that she's sad about it doesn't sound sad i wouldn't say it sounds sad i'd say it just sounds just kind of

00:43:25 --> 00:43:52 I don't know what it sounds like. But maybe that was the tone. Like, you know, like me, like I kind of still miss my person. But, you know, kind of still miss this person. But like, it's okay. I'll be fine. Little sad diamond tear rolls down my cheek, you know? Oh, interesting. You know, sad diamond tear. Maybe. Maybe. Yeah. But like, yeah, the lyrics at least are more so about celebration, like you said. Yes. But if I didn't listen to the lyrics, I would have no idea.

00:43:53 --> 00:44:14 Chris, we were driving together when I heard this. I was like, what is this? What is this? What is this? So I get it. I remember we were driving and it was kind of late and I had it on while we were chit-chatting and I stopped you and I was like, what is this? What's happening? What is this song on this album? So yeah, I get what you mean. Yeah. So it just doesn't do anything for me. I think that's just my current issue with R&B.

00:44:15 --> 00:44:39 Because I feel like back in the day, you know, the melodies were so strong that it was okay if the energy was a bit lower. And like you could just kind of loop the same thing. You didn't need a ton of build in the production or anything. But in this case, everything is just so like blah. You know, so it just does nothing for me. It's just background music.

00:44:39 --> 00:45:09 Yes, and before anyone tries to come for Chris, talking about R&B, you don't know what you're talking about. He does. We were both R&B fans. No, because it's happened before. People like to try to play us. You know? Because I said, like, about a Japanese group not having any soul, and then I heard a bunch of other songs that they have had, and the girls can sing with soul, but that one song was lacking, and people got mad at me. And then vice versa for Chris. You don't know what you're talking about. We do. We listen to music. And let's be real here. R&B has not been in a state where we all can be like,

00:45:09 --> 00:45:25 Yes. This is like, give me the feels right now. Okay, so I'm sorry. I give this one a five. Oh, Jesus. Mary, Joseph and the Lamb. I didn't know it was that low. Oh my God. So guys, we don't actually look at each other's notes when we do the show. So I'm shocked.

00:45:25 --> 00:45:55 And I have my notes on a different page. Jesus Christ. Okay. I don't think five was that low. I was going to just give it a seven to play it safe. I don't know. I mean, I think the five is warranted. I'll give it a six. I don't know. I personally can relate to it. And because of that, I will not give it that low of a score. Oh, I feel like the execution could have been better. Harvin, Felicia can do way better. So, yeah, I'll give it a six. Yeah. So. Okay.

00:45:55 --> 00:46:05 Next up is I Won't Allow It, done by Mariah Carey, Anderson Paak, Ray Khalil, Bongo by the way, Roger Shahayed, and Alicia.

00:46:11 --> 00:46:30 It's always so interesting to hear who's working on it because like you would think maybe on Anderson, you think Anderson did this one just like alone, but he has so many different names and it's people he's worked with before. So he's brought them to work with Mariah and it comes, they come up with this amazing song. This feels like a live, like.

00:46:30 --> 00:46:54 you know, track. Yeah. It just feels so good. It's the energetic answer to confetti and champagne because it does have the same, like, Hey, we were together. You messed it up. But this one's a little bit more what we were looking for with the attitude, with the punchiness. And I love that. What you're going to do. Refrain, not refrain, but like the repeated phrase. Yes.

00:46:54 --> 00:47:17 of it all um the boundaries lines in the sand love this refusal to be used and then tossed to the side for fame and such um the melody of this one actually stretched the way we were expecting i guess cnc to do confetti and champagne um we get a meme giggle love that for her um and honestly i need for this song to be the ac um

00:47:17 --> 00:47:39 urban the urban ac radio song i need to be a release for that i hate the word urban so stupid but i need it to be an ac r&b track i would love to hear this on the kiss fms i would love to hear this on whatever serious xm's got going on with like what soul town and all the older songs but the point is there is a place for this song and i wish that

00:47:39 --> 00:48:04 the general public wasn't so stuck on like flitty, airy pop vocalists and appreciated things like this. I will say, honey, again, it's not my business who she is dating or who she was dating or who she's boinking. But honey, when she mentions a dirty mustache, y'all now, is she talking about the dancer actor or the ex-husband? They both have mustaches.

00:48:05 --> 00:48:19 i love it um but honey i'm here for it in the line face all broke can't obtain any accutane should have been more proactive yes that's the one best line on the whole album

00:48:20 --> 00:48:36 She said all tea, all shade, get the shade in the tea that makes you freaking feel better. I said what I said. I don't know her. Okay. I love this. And then the playfulness of this song, it feels like Mariah, you know? And on top of that, I think Anderson also has a great sense of humor.

00:48:36 --> 00:48:55 We heard the lyrics on Silk Sonic. I mean, Bruno has a good sense of humor, too. Both of them do. But since we're talking about Anderson, it makes more sense to reference him. But yeah, no, I think having those two together, I can only imagine the sense of humor they have together because she's already kind of shady. And she's like, I don't know what you're talking about. You know, she's always been like this. And then you have him who's very much like,

00:48:56 --> 00:49:25 I'm not going to go into the lyrics right now. I was going to sing it terribly just then. Talking about some scrimps and stuff. And you know what I'm saying? Like he's funny in a story. But yeah, I think that bridge is a moment that I love on this album. Yeah. And again, it feels like what everyone fell in love with Maria Carey for. You know, it was like, she can't actually sing these songs. MTV Unplugged happened. And that's what this song felt like. So yeah, I like this one.

00:49:25 --> 00:49:42 I like this one too. It's so fun. Love the funkiness of it. Yeah. And yeah, the chorus is simple. I won't allow it. But I love the extra. Ah. And the ooh. And the stuff that's happening in the back. There's little things happening in the production as well. And the chorus that are great. Yeah.

00:49:42 --> 00:50:02 And, and yeah, you said, like, yeah, the vocal execution here, this is kind of what I wanted. There is a sass here, there's an energy to it. And, and there's a playfulness to it that goes along with these lyrics. I think, I think what I was missing on some of the other ones. Yeah. Also, I know you mentioned the bridge already, but I would also like to shout out the outro.

00:50:02 --> 00:50:28 I forgot to tell you that part. It's so much fun. I love the outro. I love how she slides around it. And it's a perfect amount of... It's not even sass. It's like a wink, kind of. It's just the way that she's saying it. It's very cheeky, playful. I really, really like this one. This was an immediate...

00:50:28 --> 00:50:54 Added to my playlist song. So I give it a 9.5. Ooh, juicy. I give it a 9. But not a doubt for that 0.5. I believe you. And I, yeah, I agree. That's a good, that's a good score to give it. I put my 9s in there. Up next is My Love. And this was done by Paul McCartney and Linda McCartney and produced by Mariah Carey and Daniel Moore II. My love does it good.

00:50:58 --> 00:51:15 This is a cover of My Love by Paul McCartney and Wings, which hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100 back in 1973. And this song is quite nostalgic for Mariah, and she is hoping she can get Paul McCartney to play something on it for a deluxe version. That would be very nice.

00:51:15 --> 00:51:39 I mean, he's not there. She's been so public about it, too. It's been in, like, a couple interviews where she was like, I try to get him on it, and I hope he gets on it. You know what? I appreciate her still having that, I want this person on the album, because it's like, you know, she's at a point where she doesn't have to do this, you know? I will say, I think it's so funny that, you know, she's done some great covers throughout her career. But then she was asked recently, I think it was in Vogue or something, where it was like...

00:51:40 --> 00:52:09 Well, first they brought up the Money Long cover. Oh. We Belong Together, which I guess she forgot had happened. Or I guess there was a miscommunication where she thought she meant like a recorded cover versus like that live version that she did on that award show. Anyway, it then led to the question of, do you like when people cover your songs? And she was like, not really. So I just think that's funny that she tends to make it a point to include a cover, you know, for a lot of her albums, but she doesn't like when other people do it. So, my love.

00:52:10 --> 00:52:37 Yes. She definitely didn't reinvent the wheel with this one. It actually stays quite true to the original. She does honor the original. Again, it's Daniel Moore II. So you get that dreaminess, that ethereal vibe. I think Mariah sounds really good on this one. Very warm, very sweet. There's a lot of dynamics throughout. Like these belts in the runs and stuff just feel very relaxed and comfortable in this one.

00:52:37 --> 00:53:06 And there's some great background vocal layering as well. I don't know if they're all her. I feel some of them sounded more like other people as well. Oh, yeah. But regardless, the whole arrangement I thought was really well done. But yeah, I thought this was a sweet inclusion for the album. You can tell it's not her song, you know? So I think it does stand out in a good way on this project. Yeah, I think because it was...

00:53:07 --> 00:53:23 reworked to fit her sensibilities and her influences and her style. Let's just put it like this simply, her style. And this feels good here. This one feels like a slow dance that turns into a hug that leads into a little bit of kissing, you know, a little...

00:53:23 --> 00:53:47 on the dance floor, that part of the movie where our two leads fall for each other, or maybe the final time they see each other, who knows, but it just feels like, you know, one of those, we're dancing together. Maybe I'll give you a little smoochy smooch. I am a romantic, if you guys could not tell. And I like songs like this. Mariah did mention that it was an homage to her childhood. And seeing how like a family friend,

00:53:47 --> 00:54:15 like was with a man and she saw how lovely they were and this was their song. And it was really sweet. And I also love how the lambs flocked over to Paul McCartney's YouTube to say, Hey, Mariah sent me over here. If you guys look at the YouTube for the YouTube video for my love with wings and Paul McCartney, it's so funny. All the lambs are there. The lambs have flocked and very much intended flocks to leave that comment. But yeah, I think for Mariah,

00:54:15 --> 00:54:45 I think the original is good, right? I think because it's a rock, it has a certain sound to it. I do appreciate how Mariah just added her flair to it. It shows respects for the greats, but it adds her own personal style with, instead of the electric guitar, you have the string section, a keyboard and something reminiscent of a final dance on the ballroom floor. But yeah, I like the lyrics of this. The song is beautiful. It feels like the relationship, the bond is unbreakable. Like no matter what happens, how far we are, this love ain't going away.

00:54:45 --> 00:55:12 And I like that. So I like this one. But yeah, because there's a cover, I don't know if that's going to affect my score or not. Oh, dang. I didn't think about this. Oh, really? Yeah, I mean, we've heard some crappy covers. We've heard some. We've heard some good covers. Some real good ones. But this one's kind of okay. But I do like it on this album. So I'm willing, I'm willing to give it an eight.

00:55:12 --> 00:55:40 Oh. I'm willing. Okay. I'm going 7.5. I was thinking 7.5, but I'm willing. Next up is Jesus I Do featuring the Clark sisters. And this was done by Mariah Carey, Karen Clark Sheard, Jackie Clark Chisholm, Dorinda Clark Cole, and Daniel Moore II. And Mariah has often listed the Clark sisters as an influence for her. So this was a huge moment for her to finally have them on the album.

00:55:47 --> 00:56:02 Heck yeah. CCW music has always been part of Mariah Carey's brand, y'all. Okay. Oh, my gosh. Okay, so there's this video called The Gospel According to Mariah Carey. I love that essay video. It was done by Malik...

00:56:02 --> 00:56:32 Kashaw TV. He's another YouTuber who talks about the sonics of music. I definitely respect him. He's somebody that I think you would also like, Chris, if you watch some of those videos, but he's always talking about how Mariah's been able to bring that concept, bring the sonics of CCW slash gospel music to the forefront of pop. I think we even talked about it before during a Rina Sawayama review, or maybe some others. I forgot what review we were doing. We were like, what happened to spirituality in...

00:56:32 --> 00:56:48 pop music. And I was like, oh yeah, it's the charging the crystals on the windowsill girlies. You know, like that's where we're at right now. Incense and spells, which is fine. No problem. I don't really care what you believe in. But the point is, it's not something that is typically done by a pop artist. Yeah.

00:56:48 --> 00:57:15 um but mariah has always done it and that's why i love that essay video but again now having it happen x amount of years later it doesn't feel like girl why are you talking about jesus suddenly you found god it feels like she's always done this you know fly like a bird um hero kind of has a little bit like a inspirational kind of thing so she's a yeah you know um it's just i like this song i will say the clark sisters is that's a flex um

00:57:16 --> 00:57:35 that's a flex. They are like, they're like the invoke of gospel, the destiny's child of the TLC. They are the girl group of all girls. When it comes to gospel and to get them, all of them on a track. That's amazing. But yeah, Karen Clark has, she or she's made Karen Clark. She showed some respect to the husband.

00:57:35 --> 00:57:57 She has mentioned her. They praise each other back and forth for years. But yeah, I think Mariah is showing out like not just her pop power, but like her spiritual roots. You know, the songs of us are rendering to a higher power and such. But yeah, I enjoy the lyrics of this one. It's like a profession of love.

00:57:57 --> 00:58:26 you know, because I know you love me. I can proclaim that I feel the same. And that's some songs kind of do repeat the whole thing over and over again, just to kind of really stamp and punctuate what they're trying to say. There's not going to be a bunch of choruses and bridges and switch ups and crap like that. But there are here vocally, even though they're saying Jesus, I do over and over again, there are some trills and frills and belting moments. And I feel like if Mariah's little throat wasn't broken,

00:58:26 --> 00:58:50 punching itself at times she would have gone off and i could feel that she wants to you know i'm saying and that's what kind of hurts my feelings so much about what's happened to her boys but i mean the body's gonna do what the body's gonna do like it's not her fault to an extent you know i don't know what's going on completely down down in that throw of hers but like it's it's a good song i enjoy it it feels um

00:58:50 --> 00:58:57 Like a full circle moment for her, you know? Again, going back true to former caution didn't even have a lick of like, God, I love you.

00:58:59 --> 00:59:27 You know what I'm saying? It's intense, but it's simplistic in terms of, like, her vocal delivery. She did try to do something. But, yeah, I like it. I do enjoy this one. It's fun, too. It's not just like, Jesus, you got me through the storm. It's more like, yeah. It's like, thank you, Mother Rainbow, Jesus, I do. You know, it feels like, you know, you're saying I do to Jesus. You're marrying Jesus.

00:59:27 --> 00:59:55 So I'm here for that Okay yeah so I I really like this one As well It really just lifts the energy Of the whole thing It's such a good addition to this project I love how live the production sounds Especially the bass Shout out to whoever played the bass The bass line is so good throughout the whole thing And yeah the Clark sisters Their harmonies are so Great

00:59:55 --> 01:00:17 effortless yeah you just tell they just been you know singing together forever right and i like the way that they mixed them or they mix mariah's voice with them because she does kind of sit away from them but it's still blended yeah like in terms of energy in terms of tone like they they did make sure to kind of stay together um

01:00:17 --> 01:00:39 So yeah, I like the way that they balanced that whole thing. Yeah, the second half of the song is just absolutely perfect. Yeah. Once the energy builds up, you get some percussion. All the ad lids, there's all these extra runs and it's like there's a lot going on, but it's balanced. It never feels like too much. It's just very satisfying and it makes you happy. Yeah. So yeah, I really like this one.

01:00:40 --> 01:00:53 Me too. Hey. So I wanted to give it a nine. I'll go 8.5. Oh, nice. Nice, nice, nice. All right. Wow. We're already here.

01:00:54 --> 01:01:17 And it's crazy how we're at the end of this. And if you've made it this far, hello, what are you doing? Subscribe. Like, the button's right there. If you're here already, just turn your phone on and hit subscribe on Spotify or wherever you're listening to us. Because you've made it to the end. And, honey, you're here for it. And so is this last track here for it all. And this was done by Mariah Carey and Daniel Moore, the second.

01:01:17 --> 01:01:30 And Mariah has noted this song is extremely personal and she named the album after it and put the track last on the album to make sure that people would listen through the whole project and has noted that it's one of her favorite ballads she has ever done.

01:01:35 --> 01:01:56 Yeah. So, Chris, thoughts? Yeah. I mean, I do think this song is the one of this album, like for sure. It's very hard for me to compare it directly to all of her ballads, but could it be up there? Maybe, actually. So, yeah, I totally understand why she wanted this to be...

01:01:56 --> 01:02:19 the main focus and make sure people listen to it and she named the album after it and everything um because yeah it's just if if you've ever liked any mariah carey ballad you will like this song it's so quintessentially her in the best way possible like it's not i wouldn't say it's derivative like it's it's still fresh but it's just her signature thing you know yeah um

01:02:20 --> 01:02:50 Yeah, I think I was watching, I think it was her on Watch What Happens with Andy Cohen. And she was saying that her voice was in a really good place during the session for this. And it just, everything just kind of came together for it. And you could hear it. Like, everything is beautiful. Like, this vocal execution is really, really well done. Like, the runs are really tight, like, really precise. Yeah.

01:02:50 --> 01:03:15 Mm-hmm. And even the background vocals and stuff, too, are beautiful. A lot of the extended notes as well, they do feel, like, sustained. And there's, yeah, like, there's, like, a power behind it. So, yeah, I think this definitely is the best vocal across the album. Yeah. And that part two situation that happens is,

01:03:16 --> 01:03:42 At the four minute mark. So good. Where it's just like a jamming session and it kind of brings back some of the joy. I don't know if joy is the right word. A kind of joy, I guess, that Jesus I do kind of had just to kind of... The jubilance. Yeah, jubilance. That's a great word. I got you. Yeah. Yeah. Just bring the energy a little bit back up and just kind of keep you interested just for that last couple minutes is perfect. I love this. I don't think I could ever get bored of this.

01:03:43 --> 01:04:10 Me too. After Jesus, I do. As a girl who has reaped on her little faith or whatever, this song, I love it. You guys, like I said, I'm super romantic. Super romantic. This song, oh my God, it feels like wedding vows. Oh, I love it. I love it. And again, she's not going to ever say who the song is about. And it's fine. She doesn't have to. But the line about the virtual sleepover nights

01:04:10 --> 01:04:28 And, you know, this person getting her through things that she doesn't even want to remember. It's just, man, man, if it's about Anderson, thank you, man. Appreciate you. If it's not about Anderson, whatever. If it's about her freaking kids, I don't care who it's about. Thank you. Because she is happy enough to, you know, want to make another album.

01:04:28 --> 01:04:47 like something she is in such a good place not just vocally but you can she wants to be present and regardless of what regardless of what's happening to her voice this one like you said is the best one vocally and i thought the same thing i was like she had a good day and i know that feeling she had a great day

01:04:47 --> 01:05:12 Like sometimes I can hit the notes on my own songs and I'm like, what the hell? Why did I make the song? Why did I put this in the song? Sometimes it happens. But like, you know, I can only imagine again, you hearing yourself from how many years ago. And then like, of course, time goes by and things like that. And to have moment after moment after moment after moment on a song that sonically is really good. She can write a ballad, man. And then that bridge is just wonderful.

01:05:12 --> 01:05:29 oh it's so good like this is the statement track this is everything she's lived the loss the love the strength the faith all of it is here in this song so I'm like if this is her last album I'm not saying it's her last album but if this is her last album if it is she can sit there and be like you know what

01:05:29 --> 01:05:46 Books closed. Don't ask me for anything else. You are welcome. I mean, this whole thing, this is the book end, you know? She's not picking up parts and trying to figure out who she used to be. Like, this is the full spectrum of who she is and what she can do at this time and what she was really good at before. And like you mentioned,

01:05:46 --> 01:06:09 the latter half has an amazing twist. Again, it gives me unplugged 92. Like the vamping, the light vamping, the background singers giving you the mantra of the song. And then we get whistles. You get a little, you know what I'm saying? Like this is, as you say, quintessential, you know? So here for this one, completely, utterly,

01:06:10 --> 01:06:27 I don't need a performance. I'm fine with it. Don't push it. I'm okay. If you have to lip it, lip it. I don't care. I'm happy. Yeah. I mean, even that little, like, acoustic preview that she put on her socials before the album came out was already beautiful. Yeah. Yeah. Absolutely. She's great. So anyway, this is my clear 10.

01:06:27 --> 01:06:52 Satan! Okay, so that wraps up the album review. There are no bonus tracks, I don't think. She put the solo version of Sugar Sweet, I think on the digital deluxe and the physical deluxe, the physical version. Right. But that's, yeah. So let's move on to the Cutter Keep section. So if you had to cut a song correctly,

01:06:53 --> 01:07:21 off this album, what would it be? And why? Competitive Champagne! Yeah. Competitive Champagne! And it's the weakest one. No offense to Harv and Felicia, but they have better writing on this album. Yeah. And clearly, I think your for it all is the keep. Oh! For me, I would think I won't allow it. I would say keep for me. Valid. Yeah. If I had to tell people what you should be looking forward to, it's this song. If you do that one. Yeah. That's valid. Yeah.

01:07:21 --> 01:07:30 Yeah. I wonder what the next single will be. I saw some people mention I won't allow it. I saw some people mention in your feelings as well.

01:07:33 --> 01:07:52 Both could work. I mean, I'm not against that, but I think I'm going to... I'm biased. All right, Lambs, let us know what you guys would keep or cut. All right, don't be yelling, ain't all the songs that hits, pick one. Okay, so overall thoughts and rate aid.

01:07:53 --> 01:08:13 Um, this one, I think because there are some like, I'm trying to be current tracks on here. No offense to those who wrote those. I'm trying to be current tracks. There are, those are the moments I'm like, if this was like almost like an R&B live soul funk adjacent kind of thing all throughout. Yeah.

01:08:13 --> 01:08:30 Would have been great. You know, if she would have went for a little Tina Marie, like square biz funk moment on where confetti and champagne could have been cool. Me, I don't hate. Right. But confetti and champagne, I guess it was like the call. It's tough.

01:08:30 --> 01:08:58 one song meets the other or else they're just outliers on the album. But aside from those two being like, hey, I think this is a pretty good album. I don't have any complaints except those really. She did what she could with what she had. I'm going to do the best with what I got. Y'all know that. Y'all see that video of her where she's like tipsy in the club? Yeah. And she said it again, but it's true. I'm doing the best with what I got. And what she has is a new voice.

01:08:59 --> 01:09:18 Maybe the same old Mariah, but we can't sit here and expect, like, you know, classic curly-haired, curly-top Mariah. We can't. It's enough of that. So I think for what we have now and I guess an acceptance of what's going on, solid album. Like, I would give it.

01:09:19 --> 01:09:46 I scored a little bit low, but I would give it an 8 overall. Because I did listen to it a couple of times. And I was like, oh, yeah, I like this. Yeah, I also give it an 8 overall, which I think is actually a good score. Yeah. Yeah, I think it's a solid album. It definitely keeps me interested throughout. You know, I think it keeps looping and I'm not bored of it. You know, I've just been listening to it nonstop for the last few days. Yeah.

01:09:47 --> 01:10:16 And I think while some of the sounds are a little all over the place, I think Mariah has such a signature... I wouldn't call it signature sound. It's just signature, like... It's almost bigger than a sound because she has done so many different things throughout her career that have all been hits and they've all felt like her. So I think she's just such an astounded artist where she can kind of do all these different things. So I think if you're a fan of Mariah...

01:10:17 --> 01:10:45 you'll definitely at least find something in here that you will like. Yeah. You know, so I appreciate that. I think any fan will definitely keep some songs on here. Yeah, I'm just excited that she's still releasing music. You know, I think I'm definitely at the phase now where a lot of my favorite artists are getting older. And there is that lingering question of like, oh, I wonder, you know, how much longer they're going to release new music for. You know, at what point...

01:10:45 --> 01:11:12 Do they want to just, you know? Yeah. Let the music speak for itself. Yeah. Or just tour a few more times and then call it a day. You know, I'm kind of at that point with a lot of my favorite artists. And I think it's great to see Mariah, like watching all the interviews and stuff. She does still seem so genuinely interested in the creative process and genuinely excited about the album. And now she's independent as well. So now, you know, she really does want to do it. You know, this isn't forced by a label or anything. Oh my gosh.

01:11:12 --> 01:11:40 Yeah, you're right. Oh my God. So yeah, I am here for it. Yes! I love the pun. I had to bring that back. Love the pun.
