Raised between New York and Ibiza by a saxophonist mom, she saw Avicii at UshuaΓ―a at 11 and was spotted online by Paris Hilton as a kid DJ. That led to launching teen glow parties at Amnesia, and later to an hour-long set in Martin Garrix's green room. At 13, she released her first single, "Superstar," a vault song co-written by Meghan Trainor. In this POP 101 interview, the New York singer, songwriter, and DJ takes us inside β€œDance Floor Emergency” and her hunt for a real ambulance for the video. She also talks about writing "Iconic" in twenty minutes at a Swiss songwriting camp and channeling the Pussycat Dolls on "Shut Up." Then comes "Sleepless Nights," which traveled from her piano to a Nashville string session, and finally to a frozen Canadian lake in sub-zero temperatures for a figure skating music video. Plus "Middle Man," and "Feel the Love" with Mom back on saxophone. And what's next: a full disco pivot inspired by Studio 54 and a trip to Sweden to chase the sound of Alcazar and Nile Rodgers. 00:00:00 --> 00:00:06 Imagine you're an ice princess, but then you have to sing, but then you have to DJ and you have to do it all in the same day.

00:00:06 --> 00:00:09 Well, our next guest, Chloe Jane, does just that.

00:00:09 --> 00:00:14 Here we are with the amazing, the fabulous Princess of the Night, Chloe Jane.

00:00:14 --> 00:00:14 Hello.

00:00:14 --> 00:00:17 How are we doing, guys?

00:00:18 --> 00:00:20 I'm so excited to be here.

00:00:20 --> 00:00:21 Yeah, we're so excited to have you here.

00:00:21 --> 00:00:22 What a lovely intro.

00:00:22 --> 00:00:23 Wow.

00:00:25 --> 00:00:27 Welcome to CCTV, the nonstop pop show.

00:00:28 --> 00:00:32 And like I said, we are joined by the amazing Chloe Jane.

00:00:32 --> 00:00:36 And we are so excited to talk pop with you, girl, from the top, from the bottom.

00:00:37 --> 00:00:41 But for those who are new tuning into you, tell us who you are.

00:00:41 --> 00:00:44 Yeah, well, yes, my name is Chloe Jane.

00:00:45 --> 00:00:50 I'm a singer, songwriter, and DJ from New York, born and raised.

00:00:51 --> 00:00:56 And I also grew up figure skating, and I recently became a roller skater.

00:00:56 --> 00:00:58 And I love...

00:00:58 --> 00:01:02 you know, writing music and performing and mixing all these fun things together.

00:01:02 --> 00:01:05 And I've been doing this basically my whole life.

00:01:05 --> 00:01:08 So it's been such a fun journey.

00:01:08 --> 00:01:10 Crazy journey being an artist in today's world.

00:01:10 --> 00:01:13 But I wouldn't I don't know what else I would do.

00:01:13 --> 00:01:15 So, girl, here we are.

00:01:15 --> 00:01:15 Yes.

00:01:16 --> 00:01:17 Oh, man.

00:01:17 --> 00:01:20 Well, pop music is ready for another huge pop girl.

00:01:21 --> 00:01:22 So let's get into it.

00:01:22 --> 00:01:24 Let's do our pop 101 with Chloe Jane.

00:01:25 --> 00:01:25 Yes.

00:01:25 --> 00:01:26 So let's take it back.

00:01:27 --> 00:01:28 You grew up in New York.

00:01:28 --> 00:01:31 You also had a stint in Spain, in Ibiza.

00:01:32 --> 00:01:33 Yes, Ibiza.

00:01:33 --> 00:01:34 You mentioned you started ice skating.

00:01:34 --> 00:01:38 We know you've also learned ballroom dancing and also play piano as well.

00:01:38 --> 00:01:39 And you have a musical family.

00:01:40 --> 00:01:46 So what was it like growing up in that musical household and especially in two very different places too?

00:01:47 --> 00:01:47 Oh, wow.

00:01:48 --> 00:01:49 Oh, my God.

00:01:49 --> 00:01:53 My childhood was definitely not a normal childhood.

00:01:54 --> 00:01:55 Yes.

00:01:55 --> 00:01:59 As you said, my parents met in Ibiza, Spain.

00:02:00 --> 00:02:03 So they met at a friend's like 40th birthday.

00:02:03 --> 00:02:04 And my dad's from New York.

00:02:04 --> 00:02:05 My mom's from Australia.

00:02:05 --> 00:02:08 They both flew there for a birthday.

00:02:08 --> 00:02:09 And that's where they met.

00:02:09 --> 00:02:10 And that's where I came in.

00:02:11 --> 00:02:14 So my mom and dad both love music.

00:02:14 --> 00:02:18 My mom grew up playing sax.

00:02:18 --> 00:02:20 She went through the conservatory music in Australia on sax.

00:02:21 --> 00:02:26 And her sister, my aunt Rebecca, she was classically trained in opera.

00:02:26 --> 00:02:33 And then they started a band called Saxxy, which was a dance pop disco group.

00:02:33 --> 00:02:40 And my mom played sax and my aunt sang and they made these like disco pop records and toured in Europe.

00:02:40 --> 00:02:42 And then my aunt was Miss Australia.

00:02:42 --> 00:02:43 What?

00:02:43 --> 00:02:44 So I get the looks from my mom's side.

00:02:44 --> 00:02:45 Nice.

00:02:47 --> 00:02:48 Mama looks.

00:02:48 --> 00:02:51 And yeah, so growing up, I was always surrounded by music.

00:02:51 --> 00:02:55 She was always, you know, listening to music, taking me to concerts.

00:02:56 --> 00:02:59 And in Ibiza, my mom loves dance music.

00:02:59 --> 00:03:02 So my parents would literally take me to the club.

00:03:02 --> 00:03:03 at 11.

00:03:03 --> 00:03:07 I would be, I saw Avicii play at Oshawaia when I was 11.

00:03:07 --> 00:03:07 Wow.

00:03:08 --> 00:03:09 Girl.

00:03:09 --> 00:03:10 They literally snuck me in.

00:03:10 --> 00:03:17 I think it was probably easier back then than now with all the cell phones and social media.

00:03:17 --> 00:03:17 But, um, I don't know.

00:03:18 --> 00:03:23 No, so I grew up, you know, around dance music and lots of pop music.

00:03:23 --> 00:03:31 I grew up playing piano, listening to lots of Alicia Keys and Amy Winehouse and Madonna.

00:03:32 --> 00:03:34 And I had a piano teacher.

00:03:34 --> 00:03:38 My parents forced me to learn piano and I hated it at first because I had a jazz piano teacher.

00:03:39 --> 00:03:39 Oh, yeah.

00:03:39 --> 00:03:40 Yeah.

00:03:40 --> 00:03:41 So I was like, you were the same.

00:03:42 --> 00:03:43 Jazz is tough.

00:03:43 --> 00:03:43 It's tough.

00:03:43 --> 00:03:44 Tough.

00:03:44 --> 00:03:46 I was learning like classical jazz.

00:03:46 --> 00:03:48 I was like, absolutely not.

00:03:48 --> 00:03:49 This is not it.

00:03:50 --> 00:03:50 This is not fun.

00:03:51 --> 00:03:53 Because I was ice skating also at the time.

00:03:53 --> 00:03:55 So I was at doing school.

00:03:55 --> 00:03:59 I went to this like girls school in New York growing up, which I'll get into.

00:03:59 --> 00:04:05 But I was doing ice skating literally 5 a.m. every morning before school training.

00:04:05 --> 00:04:08 I was set on being an Olympic figure skater.

00:04:08 --> 00:04:11 I was competing, like traveling all over the country.

00:04:11 --> 00:04:12 I was obsessed.

00:04:12 --> 00:04:15 Like you could not drag me off that rink.

00:04:16 --> 00:04:23 And then when I started, you know, playing piano, thank God my piano teacher, every time he came over, he broke something in my house.

00:04:23 --> 00:04:25 Like he fell through a chair once.

00:04:26 --> 00:04:28 He like smashed a glass on the floor.

00:04:28 --> 00:04:32 He locked himself in the bathroom to get the fire department to come get there.

00:04:33 --> 00:04:34 I don't even know how that was possible.

00:04:34 --> 00:04:35 Yeah.

00:04:35 --> 00:04:36 My parents were like, he's got to go.

00:04:36 --> 00:04:41 And I got a new piano teacher who taught me how to play the music that I loved on the piano.

00:04:42 --> 00:04:45 So then I started learning chords and, you know, arrangements.

00:04:46 --> 00:04:50 And that's how I started writing my own songs when I was 11 on the piano.

00:04:51 --> 00:04:58 And I wrote about all the mean girls at school because I was having trouble at school at the time.

00:04:58 --> 00:04:59 You know, the second year.

00:05:00 --> 00:05:02 that the girls turn like 12.

00:05:02 --> 00:05:04 Something happens, like a switch.

00:05:04 --> 00:05:05 Like what happened to us?

00:05:05 --> 00:05:06 Right.

00:05:06 --> 00:05:07 What happened to BFF?

00:05:07 --> 00:05:08 Now it's like, ah.

00:05:08 --> 00:05:09 Yeah.

00:05:09 --> 00:05:09 Such a weird thing.

00:05:09 --> 00:05:10 Yeah.

00:05:10 --> 00:05:10 Hormones.

00:05:12 --> 00:05:12 Yep.

00:05:12 --> 00:05:15 It gave me inspiration to write about, I guess.

00:05:15 --> 00:05:20 And it was my way of expressing myself and my emotions because I was different to begin with.

00:05:20 --> 00:05:25 Like I was always ice skating or doing something, dance classes, music.

00:05:25 --> 00:05:27 And I wasn't normal like them.

00:05:27 --> 00:05:31 Like they would all hang out after school and had a whole social life.

00:05:31 --> 00:05:33 And I was doing my own thing.

00:05:33 --> 00:05:34 So they didn't like that.

00:05:34 --> 00:05:34 But.

00:05:35 --> 00:05:38 But yeah, and that's how I started writing songs.

00:05:38 --> 00:05:40 And ever since then, I'm like, this music thing is pretty cool.

00:05:41 --> 00:05:47 Until I, you know, from seeing all the dance music growing up, I'm like, I want to learn how to DJ as well.

00:05:49 --> 00:05:49 That sounds fun.

00:05:49 --> 00:05:50 I want to learn how to do that.

00:05:51 --> 00:06:02 And I was 12 and I found out about this school on 14th Street called Dub Spot, which is an electronic music production school and DJ school.

00:06:02 --> 00:06:07 And I went in there with my mom one day and I said, I would like to take a DJ lesson, please.

00:06:07 --> 00:06:07 So cute.

00:06:07 --> 00:06:08 Stop.

00:06:09 --> 00:06:12 And I met this DJ instructor and he gave me some lessons.

00:06:12 --> 00:06:16 And then I started posting videos online.

00:06:16 --> 00:06:20 I bedazzled my headphones with my mom.

00:06:20 --> 00:06:22 She helped me bedazzle my headphones.

00:06:22 --> 00:06:24 I said, we need these neat things.

00:06:24 --> 00:06:25 Yeah, absolutely.

00:06:25 --> 00:06:26 and shine, baby.

00:06:26 --> 00:06:27 Glitter and shine.

00:06:27 --> 00:06:27 Hello.

00:06:27 --> 00:06:32 And at that time there weren't, you know, many female DJs in the scene.

00:06:32 --> 00:06:36 I feel like now there's so many amazing female DJs killing it.

00:06:37 --> 00:06:40 But back then there weren't many like girl DJs for me to look up to.

00:06:42 --> 00:06:50 But I started learning to DJ and then Paris Hilton saw my videos that I was posting online with my glitter headphones and was like, who is that little girl?

00:06:51 --> 00:06:52 She's adorable.

00:06:52 --> 00:06:59 And she invited me to come out and open for her in Ibiza at a children's charity event at the Club Amnesia.

00:06:59 --> 00:07:01 Yes, you had a residency.

00:07:01 --> 00:07:04 We were watching your glow nights, right?

00:07:04 --> 00:07:05 That's insane.

00:07:05 --> 00:07:07 That led to the glow nights.

00:07:07 --> 00:07:14 So I opened for Paris and then the owner and his daughters were there and they're like, this is amazing.

00:07:14 --> 00:07:16 We need you to throw the teenage parties here.

00:07:16 --> 00:07:16 Yeah.

00:07:17 --> 00:07:22 And it was never done before on the island because when people go to Ibiza, they're like, oh, adult parties, adult parties.

00:07:22 --> 00:07:24 But sometimes they bring their families, too.

00:07:24 --> 00:07:26 And there's all these kids that have nowhere to go.

00:07:26 --> 00:07:28 I'm like, let's make a party for the kids.

00:07:28 --> 00:07:28 Yes.

00:07:29 --> 00:07:30 We were watching your videos.

00:07:30 --> 00:07:31 I was like, this is like legit.

00:07:31 --> 00:07:33 You had your, you were like bedazzled up.

00:07:33 --> 00:07:35 You looked like a little like Burning Man baby.

00:07:35 --> 00:07:37 And I was like, look, girl.

00:07:37 --> 00:07:41 We had glitter stations and LED like tattoos.

00:07:41 --> 00:07:41 Yes.

00:07:41 --> 00:07:43 And you had your friends at one point.

00:07:43 --> 00:07:46 He didn't get to see the video, but there was a video.

00:07:46 --> 00:07:47 She had them working.

00:07:47 --> 00:07:51 I don't know if they were twins or not, but these two girls that you like were friends with were unboxing her light sticks.

00:07:51 --> 00:07:52 Yes.

00:07:52 --> 00:07:55 I used glow sticks and I got them shipped from China.

00:07:55 --> 00:07:57 They had Chloe Jane, superstar.

00:07:57 --> 00:07:58 Perfect.

00:07:59 --> 00:08:02 And I still have like boxes of them in storage.

00:08:03 --> 00:08:04 Oh, honey, you have to hand them out.

00:08:04 --> 00:08:06 Okay, listen, don't give it all away.

00:08:06 --> 00:08:07 They're going to be worth it.

00:08:07 --> 00:08:08 Yeah, yeah, don't give it away.

00:08:08 --> 00:08:09 Yeah, yeah.

00:08:09 --> 00:08:13 But yes, no, your whole life is just so interesting because it's like, like you said, you started DJing at so young.

00:08:14 --> 00:08:17 And I remember in an old video, you had mentioned that Martin Garrix was one of your influences.

00:08:17 --> 00:08:22 You've named a couple, but who else shaped your understanding of dance and pop music?

00:08:22 --> 00:08:25 Like who is your top pop spots?

00:08:25 --> 00:08:26 Okay, yes.

00:08:26 --> 00:08:27 Girl.

00:08:27 --> 00:08:32 Well, I would say my number one top pop is Miss Lady Gaga.

00:08:33 --> 00:08:33 Oh, yes.

00:08:34 --> 00:08:38 Because I love how she, you know, such an incredible performer.

00:08:38 --> 00:08:48 But she can both sit down at the piano and sing a killer ballad and then get up and do the most incredible like dance performance choreography flying here and there.

00:08:49 --> 00:08:51 And I'm like that in a sense.

00:08:51 --> 00:09:03 Like I, you know, can jump on stage, roller skate, fly off the stage, surf into the crowd and then just sit down at the piano and like sing a song and bring it back just to the raw music.

00:09:04 --> 00:09:06 And I feel like there's not lots of artists that do that.

00:09:07 --> 00:09:09 And, you know, just music is incredible.

00:09:09 --> 00:09:09 So.

00:09:09 --> 00:09:10 that too.

00:09:10 --> 00:09:23 But growing up, I mean, in Ibiza, I grew up listening to lots of disco and lots of 90 house records and all these soulful records and all like the 70s remixes.

00:09:24 --> 00:09:28 And a good friend of my dad is this DJ named Jellybean Benitez.

00:09:28 --> 00:09:30 I don't know if you know the name.

00:09:31 --> 00:09:33 He's still like, I saw him maybe a month ago.

00:09:33 --> 00:09:34 He's still killing it.

00:09:34 --> 00:09:36 He's a DJ and he played at Studio 54.

00:09:37 --> 00:09:37 Wow.

00:09:38 --> 00:09:41 And he dated Madonna in the 80s.

00:09:41 --> 00:09:41 Come on, Madonna.

00:09:42 --> 00:09:47 And when I learned how to DJ, he also gave me some lessons and showed me the ropes.

00:09:47 --> 00:09:48 Yeah, that's awesome.

00:09:48 --> 00:09:51 So he's been a real great inspiration.

00:09:51 --> 00:09:56 But yeah, like you said, your experience in Ibiza, it's not typical whatsoever.

00:09:56 --> 00:09:59 It's even in New York, right?

00:09:59 --> 00:09:59 Yeah.

00:09:59 --> 00:10:01 What was one of the most, I guess, most...

00:10:01 --> 00:10:23 fun or most memorable any crazy stories you have about being in a club like just you've seen it as a dj or just you in the party like what because i've seen some things he's seen something but you yeah at a young age you probably seen a lot of things yeah i've seen a lot of things i went to martin garrick's show at oshawa three years ago

00:10:24 --> 00:10:29 And after the show, well, I was in like this section and I met like one of his friends.

00:10:30 --> 00:10:32 And he's like, oh, yeah.

00:10:32 --> 00:10:34 He was also from Amsterdam.

00:10:34 --> 00:10:35 I'm here with Martin.

00:10:36 --> 00:10:38 And he was like, come into the green room with us after.

00:10:38 --> 00:10:38 There's a party.

00:10:38 --> 00:10:39 I'm like, what?

00:10:40 --> 00:10:41 Whoa, green room party?

00:10:42 --> 00:10:43 Yeah, I'm coming with you.

00:10:44 --> 00:10:54 So I go into the green room and every night after the show, Martin's show, they have music playing and like a whole DJ set up in the after party room.

00:10:54 --> 00:10:55 They have a whole after party.

00:10:56 --> 00:11:04 So Martin sees me and he's like trying to find, he needs to go to the bathroom and he asked me randomly, he's like, do you have a USB?

00:11:04 --> 00:11:05 You could play some tracks.

00:11:06 --> 00:11:06 Oh.

00:11:06 --> 00:11:08 So I ended up

00:11:08 --> 00:11:31 playing he was like i need to go to the bathroom i'll be right back i'm like okay i'll like play a song yeah yeah he was he kept me he just let me keep going because everyone was like dancing everyone was vibing i played like an hour in the green room yeah and there's one video that i have of him like coming up to me and like going like this and i'm like i'm

00:11:31 --> 00:11:33 I started crying after that.

00:11:33 --> 00:11:34 I was like, this is so cool.

00:11:34 --> 00:11:37 Being young in the industry can have its own challenges, of course.

00:11:38 --> 00:11:40 And you did speak to being bullied in elementary school.

00:11:41 --> 00:11:47 So how did you navigate developing your creativity and your own confidence while dealing with these experiences?

00:11:49 --> 00:11:52 Well, that's a thing I've learned along the way.

00:11:53 --> 00:11:58 You know, doing music when I was younger was challenging.

00:11:58 --> 00:12:06 And I put out one song when I was 13 and it started doing well on like Radio Disney and that whole thing.

00:12:06 --> 00:12:07 And then the...

00:12:08 --> 00:12:22 Social scene in new york started finding out about it and I started getting like all these hate comments and this and that so but i'm very grateful and So lucky that I have such supportive like family around me.

00:12:22 --> 00:12:31 I don't think I will I would be here still doing this today um, if it wasn't for like my family being there because it's really you know

00:12:32 --> 00:12:37 Any successful artist that's lasted has a good support system around them.

00:12:37 --> 00:12:41 If it's not their family, you know, a great team or something.

00:12:41 --> 00:12:44 And it's so true because you could get so caught up.

00:12:44 --> 00:12:48 And it's such an industry where it's so opinion based and so much about...

00:12:49 --> 00:12:52 your image and this and what you're doing right, what you're doing wrong.

00:12:53 --> 00:13:00 And it can really take like a mental toll when you're just creating things you love and then you get bashed down and like, Oh no, that's not good enough.

00:13:01 --> 00:13:02 Oh no, you don't, I don't like that.

00:13:02 --> 00:13:04 But then other people love it.

00:13:04 --> 00:13:08 And you know, that's just not my audience or not my listener.

00:13:08 --> 00:13:09 Yeah.

00:13:09 --> 00:13:10 But,

00:13:10 --> 00:13:16 No, I definitely, even to this day, like literally six hours ago, I'd break down.

00:13:16 --> 00:13:18 I'm like, what am I doing?

00:13:18 --> 00:13:19 We're all so real.

00:13:19 --> 00:13:20 No, it's hard.

00:13:20 --> 00:13:21 It's true.

00:13:21 --> 00:13:26 But then on stage, I feel like a completely different person.

00:13:26 --> 00:13:28 Like this is where I belong.

00:13:29 --> 00:13:33 And this is what I do all of this for and deal with all this bulls**t for.

00:13:33 --> 00:13:34 Yes, exactly.

00:13:34 --> 00:13:35 You can handle it then.

00:13:35 --> 00:13:35 Yeah.

00:13:36 --> 00:13:37 Yeah.

00:13:37 --> 00:13:44 Oh man, so that single that you mentioned, that Superstar, that was released in June 2017 and it was written by Meghan Trainor.

00:13:44 --> 00:13:44 Yeah.

00:13:44 --> 00:13:48 So how did the song come about and what was that like your first recording process like?

00:13:54 --> 00:13:56 When I was 13, I met these producers in New York.

00:13:56 --> 00:14:05 They were a producer trio called The Eleven and they had a small studio downtown and I met them through...

00:14:06 --> 00:14:08 You know, I couldn't quite remember.

00:14:08 --> 00:14:09 That's going 10 years ago.

00:14:09 --> 00:14:09 Wow.

00:14:09 --> 00:14:11 That's a long time, y'all.

00:14:14 --> 00:14:16 I met them and I did a studio session with them.

00:14:17 --> 00:14:21 We started writing songs and then they also started pulling up songs that they wrote and like had.

00:14:22 --> 00:14:26 They said, we have this one song that we think would be awesome for you.

00:14:27 --> 00:14:29 We co-wrote it with Meghan Trainor.

00:14:30 --> 00:14:33 And I was like, oh, play that song right now.

00:14:33 --> 00:14:35 I'd love to hear it.

00:14:35 --> 00:14:40 And they played me Superstar with Meghan's vocals on it and everything.

00:14:40 --> 00:14:40 And.

00:14:41 --> 00:14:46 And they said, you know, Megan, the label, L.A. Reid, said she was too young to release this.

00:14:46 --> 00:14:48 So it's left on the vault.

00:14:49 --> 00:14:50 If you want to have it, you can take it.

00:14:51 --> 00:14:53 And I was like, yeah, I relate to this.

00:14:53 --> 00:14:55 We get a little crazy.

00:14:55 --> 00:14:56 Yeah, let's go.

00:14:59 --> 00:15:00 Us girls, we have some fun.

00:15:01 --> 00:15:03 We're like superstars.

00:15:03 --> 00:15:04 Girl.

00:15:04 --> 00:15:07 I was like, this is a smash hit.

00:15:08 --> 00:15:13 This is everything I need to record this song yesterday.

00:15:13 --> 00:15:15 Like, this is it.

00:15:15 --> 00:15:16 This is my chance.

00:15:17 --> 00:15:18 A year later, I didn't feel the same.

00:15:20 --> 00:15:22 No, it's such a cute video.

00:15:22 --> 00:15:23 No, it's so cute.

00:15:23 --> 00:15:23 Yeah, you were young.

00:15:23 --> 00:15:24 You were having fun.

00:15:24 --> 00:15:26 Are those your friends that are in the video?

00:15:26 --> 00:15:27 Yeah, those are my friends.

00:15:27 --> 00:15:28 So cute.

00:15:28 --> 00:15:31 And you said you were also getting some attention on radio and stuff.

00:15:31 --> 00:15:32 Yeah, yeah.

00:15:32 --> 00:15:32 That's awesome.

00:15:32 --> 00:15:33 So Radio Disney played it.

00:15:34 --> 00:15:36 They, like, did an on-air interview with me.

00:15:36 --> 00:15:36 Yeah.

00:15:36 --> 00:15:40 And I did some, like, press in L.A. for it, which was super fun.

00:15:41 --> 00:15:42 And that was the first song I put out.

00:15:42 --> 00:15:43 And, um...

00:15:44 --> 00:15:45 I was like, this is so great.

00:15:46 --> 00:15:48 And then from there, I was like, okay, I need to keep going.

00:15:49 --> 00:15:53 And I worked with them more and we wrote some other songs.

00:15:53 --> 00:15:58 And then I went to LA and did some writing sessions and I met writers and producers.

00:15:58 --> 00:15:59 And then I started making...

00:16:00 --> 00:16:28 pop r&b then i start going to more dance pop then i went to like ballad pop then i went to i tried every single genre under the sun of pop yeah and um and you know in this industry it's like you meet people they're like oh i'm gonna help you i'm gonna do this for you and then they never stick to their word so there was a lot of that going on i feel when i was and i was so young i was yeah

00:16:29 --> 00:16:33 14, 15, 16 that I was trying to navigate it all.

00:16:33 --> 00:16:35 I'm like, I just want to make music and put it out.

00:16:35 --> 00:16:36 It's stuff that I like.

00:16:36 --> 00:16:37 And it was challenging.

00:16:37 --> 00:16:43 And I, even when I was 16, I convinced my parents, I said, if I'm going to make it in music, I need to live in LA.

00:16:44 --> 00:16:49 Like where all the writers, all the producers are, all the artists, like the music industry is based out of there.

00:16:49 --> 00:16:49 Mm-hmm.

00:16:50 --> 00:16:56 And I threw like a massive fit until the point they said, OK, go.

00:16:56 --> 00:17:05 So I enrolled myself in a one on one school there and rented an apartment and stayed there in L.A. by myself.

00:17:06 --> 00:17:07 And I couldn't drive.

00:17:07 --> 00:17:09 Oh, I.

00:17:10 --> 00:17:29 had two friends that lived like 30 minutes away and then i had all these sessions that i was setting up and then i would have weeks where i they would get canceled moved around and i would just be so frustrated i'm like i'm here to work and everyone keeps flaking on me and then the pandemic hit

00:17:32 --> 00:17:35 My dad said there's a pandemic happening.

00:17:35 --> 00:17:37 You have to get on the first flight home.

00:17:37 --> 00:17:39 Otherwise, you're going to get stuck in L.A.

00:17:39 --> 00:17:43 I love dad because literally most people are like, it's fine.

00:17:43 --> 00:17:44 It's going to pass.

00:17:44 --> 00:17:46 He's like, get your ass home.

00:17:46 --> 00:17:47 Come on, girl.

00:17:47 --> 00:17:47 Good.

00:17:48 --> 00:17:49 Because that's scary to be out there.

00:17:49 --> 00:17:51 Yeah, I was like, okay, I'll come home.

00:17:52 --> 00:17:53 And I wanted to come home.

00:17:53 --> 00:17:55 I'm like, I don't like LA.

00:17:55 --> 00:17:59 This is not it, what I believed.

00:17:59 --> 00:18:01 So I came home and then COVID happened.

00:18:02 --> 00:18:04 And then I finished high school online.

00:18:05 --> 00:18:06 Now, I remember my first song that I ever written.

00:18:06 --> 00:18:07 It's not.

00:18:08 --> 00:18:09 Yes.

00:18:09 --> 00:18:09 Girl, it's not good.

00:18:10 --> 00:18:12 But yeah, so you were saying you already had the experience.

00:18:12 --> 00:18:14 I was just a dancer turning.

00:18:14 --> 00:18:14 I want to sing.

00:18:14 --> 00:18:16 I want to be like J-Lo.

00:18:16 --> 00:18:17 But like you actually played.

00:18:17 --> 00:18:18 You DJed.

00:18:18 --> 00:18:20 So what was your first song?

00:18:20 --> 00:18:22 Like the first one you penned By Yourself.

00:18:22 --> 00:18:23 You were like, Mom, Dad, sit.

00:18:24 --> 00:18:24 I got something.

00:18:24 --> 00:18:25 I got fire.

00:18:25 --> 00:18:25 Oh, yes.

00:18:26 --> 00:18:28 What was that first song?

00:18:28 --> 00:18:31 So it was a song called Rule Breaker.

00:18:31 --> 00:18:33 Okay.

00:18:33 --> 00:18:40 It went, Rule Breaker, you break the rules and you never get caught.

00:18:40 --> 00:18:40 Oh,

00:18:40 --> 00:18:44 Rule breaker, you're not as smart as you thought.

00:18:45 --> 00:18:47 Rule one, no more lying.

00:18:48 --> 00:18:50 Rule two, no more playing me fool.

00:18:51 --> 00:18:53 Rule three, no pretending.

00:18:54 --> 00:18:56 And rule four, no breaking these rules.

00:18:57 --> 00:19:01 So I wrote the line about the girls at school that used to bully me.

00:19:01 --> 00:19:04 And then I would tell the teachers about it and they would never get in trouble.

00:19:05 --> 00:19:08 And I was like, you're breaking all the rules here.

00:19:10 --> 00:19:12 But they don't do anything about it.

00:19:12 --> 00:19:12 Oh, no.

00:19:13 --> 00:19:15 Meanwhile, what the...

00:19:15 --> 00:19:17 Girl, so... That's a really good melody.

00:19:18 --> 00:19:20 You know, I was listening to it the other day.

00:19:20 --> 00:19:21 I'm like, maybe I'll bring it back.

00:19:22 --> 00:19:22 Yeah.

00:19:23 --> 00:19:24 But yeah, and then that...

00:19:24 --> 00:19:30 So I used to get inspiration also from makeup, like, names.

00:19:30 --> 00:19:34 So Rule Breaker was a Mac, also like a Mac red lipstick.

00:19:34 --> 00:19:35 Love.

00:19:35 --> 00:19:37 And then I was obsessed with makeup growing up.

00:19:37 --> 00:19:38 Yeah.

00:19:38 --> 00:19:40 I was addicted to YouTube, like,

00:19:40 --> 00:19:42 makeup tutorials.

00:19:42 --> 00:19:46 And then I wrote a song called Golden Refined, which is like a bronzer.

00:19:47 --> 00:19:49 I wrote a song called Black Heart.

00:19:49 --> 00:19:53 Don't show me your black heart, which was an urban decay, like eyeshadow.

00:19:53 --> 00:19:55 Yes, I love urban decay.

00:19:55 --> 00:20:03 So you went to your full pop girl era because finally in 2023, you released like a slew of singles injected with vintage disco sound.

00:20:03 --> 00:20:06 And of course, that 2010s inspired EDM.

00:20:11 --> 00:20:31 I'm sick of all the sadness You know I'm sick of all the sadness Me cuesta besarte Me cuesta quererte Si en rengo just a soft complaint I've got a billion drops of houses Maybe cause they're better Or maybe cause they never liked you

00:20:32 --> 00:20:38 During this time, how did you develop that visual and sonic identity?

00:20:38 --> 00:20:42 Like, why did you choose those two Sonics to really have beat your soundscape?

00:20:42 --> 00:20:43 Because you had all different songs.

00:20:43 --> 00:20:47 You had Addicted, Sick of Sadness, No Tengo Paciencia.

00:20:47 --> 00:20:49 Some are fling, they don't like you.

00:20:49 --> 00:20:50 You were just all over the place.

00:20:50 --> 00:20:51 Yeah, but it wasn't like it wasn't.

00:20:52 --> 00:21:14 super discombobulated it was more just like okay she likes this style uh-huh why was that because it's 2023 you're reaching 2010s and 70s how did you develop that i think that's just the music that i genuinely love like i just love pop music with those kinds of melodies i think

00:21:16 --> 00:21:17 it's a very Swedish sound.

00:21:17 --> 00:21:18 Yeah.

00:21:19 --> 00:21:20 It is.

00:21:20 --> 00:21:31 Growing up, I strictly like research Swedish producers and all their music and read books about like the whole hit factory, all the artists.

00:21:31 --> 00:21:34 And now I have a Swedish sense.

00:21:34 --> 00:21:38 Like if I'm listening to a song, I can tell if it's written by a Swedish person.

00:21:38 --> 00:21:39 Yeah.

00:21:40 --> 00:21:47 And I think that I was drawn to that genre because a lot of the 2010s music, I mean, was Avicii and Swedish House Mafia.

00:21:47 --> 00:21:50 And I listened to like so much of that also.

00:21:50 --> 00:21:53 So those melodies, but making them pop.

00:21:53 --> 00:21:56 And then Sick of Sadness.

00:21:56 --> 00:21:59 I wrote that with the producer duo in L.A., Same Same.

00:22:01 --> 00:22:07 They're great producers and wrote that about how I'm sick of all the sadness in the world and how...

00:22:08 --> 00:22:26 yeah it's kind of bringing back that message of the girls at school but and just you know saying effort i'm yeah sick of this all the sadness i'm not gonna let it get to me and it's such a empowering message um so yeah i and then i yeah i made a song in spanish where where did you film that video

00:22:27 --> 00:22:28 Um, the No Patience?

00:22:28 --> 00:22:29 Yeah.

00:22:29 --> 00:22:33 The one, oh, that was in, well, one, okay, I had two videos.

00:22:34 --> 00:22:35 I did.

00:22:35 --> 00:22:37 She's had two videos, like, the salsa dancing.

00:22:37 --> 00:22:38 Yeah, the salsa dancing.

00:22:38 --> 00:22:41 That was in LA, but the rest of the video was in Ibiza.

00:22:41 --> 00:22:42 Okay, I thought so.

00:22:42 --> 00:22:45 And I mixed the two, because I did a song, I did that song originally in English.

00:22:45 --> 00:22:45 Yeah.

00:22:45 --> 00:22:52 And then I trans, I worked with this Latin artist, and she helped me translate it into Spanish, and it sounded amazing in Spanish.

00:22:53 --> 00:22:54 So then I combined both the versions.

00:22:54 --> 00:22:55 Okay.

00:22:55 --> 00:22:58 And before I combined them, I did a whole video for just the English version.

00:22:58 --> 00:23:03 And then I was like, well, I'm going to have to like have some shots of my lips moving in Spanish.

00:23:03 --> 00:23:06 So, yes, you have to.

00:23:06 --> 00:23:09 I did that part in Ibiza and like combined it together.

00:23:09 --> 00:23:13 And then the Colombian rapper Lalo jumped on it.

00:23:15 --> 00:23:18 But the Spanish thing, the Latin bomb dancing, all my mother.

00:23:19 --> 00:23:20 Girl.

00:23:20 --> 00:23:20 All my mothers.

00:23:21 --> 00:23:23 She loves Latin music.

00:23:23 --> 00:23:30 Ricky Martin, Mark Anthony, Shakira, it was all constantly playing in my house.

00:23:30 --> 00:23:31 All the CDs.

00:23:32 --> 00:23:33 I know all the albums.

00:23:34 --> 00:23:36 And I love Latin music too.

00:23:36 --> 00:23:41 I mean, all the beats, the vibes, it's such a great vibe.

00:23:42 --> 00:23:47 So, I wrote this song with a bit of a Latin flair to it because I speak Spanish and

00:23:49 --> 00:23:54 A lot of people were like, yeah, good luck doing a song in Spanish.

00:23:54 --> 00:23:55 That's going to sound real good.

00:23:55 --> 00:23:57 You're going to sound really good in Spanish.

00:23:57 --> 00:24:01 And then I recorded it and it sounded perfect.

00:24:01 --> 00:24:06 So let's move to 2024, which is when Dance Floor Emergency came out.

00:24:06 --> 00:24:10 And this is where you're kind of establishing your kind of sonic identity a bit more.

00:24:10 --> 00:24:14 We get some more electronica and your music videos again.

00:24:14 --> 00:24:16 are so much fun.

00:24:16 --> 00:24:17 So let's talk through some of these tracks.

00:24:17 --> 00:24:21 Dance for Emergency, you have Keep Holding On, Need You.

00:24:21 --> 00:24:21 Yeah.

00:24:22 --> 00:24:24 Even Borderline, Madonna cover as well.

00:24:24 --> 00:24:24 Yeah.

00:24:24 --> 00:24:26 So yeah, talk us through this project.

00:24:51 --> 00:24:54 Dance Floor Emergency EP.

00:24:54 --> 00:24:56 I was working with two different producers.

00:24:57 --> 00:24:59 So keep holding on, need you.

00:25:01 --> 00:25:02 Lost in the music.

00:25:03 --> 00:25:08 I did with this producer, Zach Lever, in L.A.

00:25:08 --> 00:25:14 I got introduced to him by his manager, who is in the dance world I met.

00:25:14 --> 00:25:18 And he has his studio house in the Valley.

00:25:18 --> 00:25:23 And I would go out to L.A. for a week, and we would just spend eight hours every day.

00:25:23 --> 00:25:25 And we would write maybe like 10 songs a day together.

00:25:25 --> 00:25:25 Wow.

00:25:26 --> 00:25:32 Whether for me or just to pitch to send to DJs, like we were writing songs to send to DJs.

00:25:32 --> 00:25:40 So that's how a lot of the songs got cut and stuff, because I would be writing with him and he had a good like dance sensibility.

00:25:42 --> 00:25:48 Dance for Emergency was when I met Tor, my producer and still current collaborator.

00:25:50 --> 00:25:54 I got introduced to him through a mutual DJ friend who makes tribal house music.

00:25:54 --> 00:25:57 And I'm like, how tribal house?

00:25:58 --> 00:25:58 Yeah.

00:25:58 --> 00:26:00 Hob, very different.

00:26:00 --> 00:26:02 But I met with him, I was in LA.

00:26:02 --> 00:26:04 I'm like, yeah, I'll meet with him for coffee.

00:26:04 --> 00:26:06 And he said, oh yeah, I'm working on Getta's record right now.

00:26:07 --> 00:26:08 I did Ava Max's record.

00:26:09 --> 00:26:10 I'm like, okay.

00:26:13 --> 00:26:13 Okay.

00:26:14 --> 00:26:21 And it was so cool and so like together and professional and would respond.

00:26:22 --> 00:26:23 Oh my God, I love that.

00:26:23 --> 00:26:24 Yes, don't leave you on red.

00:26:24 --> 00:26:25 Yes.

00:26:25 --> 00:26:31 In the music industry and especially in the creative lane, like producers, writers, artists.

00:26:32 --> 00:26:34 Disappeared in the wind.

00:26:35 --> 00:26:36 I mean, add to the list.

00:26:36 --> 00:26:38 PR people, label people.

00:26:38 --> 00:26:39 Yeah, we've dealt with it too.

00:26:39 --> 00:26:39 Yeah.

00:26:39 --> 00:26:40 Yeah.

00:26:41 --> 00:26:45 And Tor was, you know, on the ball, on the money every time.

00:26:45 --> 00:26:47 And we got, we did one session together.

00:26:47 --> 00:26:50 And the first session we did, we wrote Dance for Emergency together.

00:26:50 --> 00:26:51 Wow.

00:26:52 --> 00:26:53 And we did it, yeah.

00:26:54 --> 00:26:55 And we wrote it in one day.

00:26:55 --> 00:27:01 I said, he had, I said, I had this idea for a song where

00:27:02 --> 00:27:04 It's an emergency to get to the dance floor.

00:27:04 --> 00:27:07 No matter what's going on in the world, got to get to the dance floor.

00:27:08 --> 00:27:09 And he's like, I like that.

00:27:09 --> 00:27:14 So we started writing the song and he started pulling up siren sounds.

00:27:14 --> 00:27:14 Yeah.

00:27:16 --> 00:27:17 Yeah, I could pull up the demo.

00:27:17 --> 00:27:21 It sounds like the song was there after one day and then he did all the production.

00:27:21 --> 00:27:22 But he's great.

00:27:22 --> 00:27:24 And then from there, we wrote...

00:27:26 --> 00:27:30 many more songs that we haven't heard yet.

00:27:30 --> 00:27:32 We were like probably dying to hear.

00:27:32 --> 00:27:32 Yeah.

00:27:32 --> 00:27:34 Well, he did famous.

00:27:34 --> 00:27:34 He did more.

00:27:34 --> 00:27:37 So like, you said, like, you feel the love.

00:27:37 --> 00:27:37 Yeah.

00:27:38 --> 00:27:38 Oh, girl.

00:27:38 --> 00:27:40 Like I said, we're going to get into that.

00:27:40 --> 00:27:40 He's great.

00:27:40 --> 00:27:41 He's in LA.

00:27:42 --> 00:27:44 And, um, I still talk to him all the time.

00:27:44 --> 00:27:45 He's in Stockholm right now.

00:27:45 --> 00:27:46 Oh, wow.

00:27:46 --> 00:27:46 Okay.

00:27:46 --> 00:27:46 Yeah.

00:27:46 --> 00:27:48 Because he works with this great Swedish...

00:27:49 --> 00:28:02 He signed this great Swedish writer, Jakke Eriksson, who, like, did Red... Was working with Red One on Gaga stuff and also does Ava and Lauren Spencer Smith and great Swedish writers, so...

00:28:02 --> 00:28:10 I wrote lots of songs with Yake and Tor, all for the Princess of the Night record that hopefully we'll see the light of day one day.

00:28:10 --> 00:28:19 And Dance for Emergency, that was a really tricky video because the original location we were gonna do it at, I needed like a warehouse.

00:28:20 --> 00:28:20 Yeah.

00:28:21 --> 00:28:29 Rungy atmosphere, but I wanted it to start in an emergency like doctor's emergency room.

00:28:29 --> 00:28:29 Yeah.

00:28:30 --> 00:28:37 Where we were patients trying and being sedated and not like we were meant to like live and be free.

00:28:38 --> 00:28:41 And we were trying to escape and get to the dance floor.

00:28:42 --> 00:28:45 And the doctors weren't letting us do that.

00:28:45 --> 00:28:49 And I said, we need an ambulance.

00:28:50 --> 00:28:52 in this music video to take us to the dance floor.

00:28:53 --> 00:29:00 And my director, Carice, he said, now, Chloe, where are we going to get an ambulance in New York City?

00:29:00 --> 00:29:01 That's my question.

00:29:01 --> 00:29:10 Because LA is so much better for music videos because they have every prop, anything you could think of, you can find in LA.

00:29:10 --> 00:29:13 But New York is not the biggest music video place.

00:29:15 --> 00:29:16 So I started calling up...

00:29:17 --> 00:29:22 I did my research, ambulance.com, ambulances, Ambulance New York.

00:29:23 --> 00:29:29 And I would call these companies and they said, sorry, we don't rent out ambulances for music videos.

00:29:29 --> 00:29:30 Those are to save people's lives.

00:29:31 --> 00:29:35 And I'm like, what about just for six hours on the Thursday?

00:29:35 --> 00:29:36 Saving my ass.

00:29:37 --> 00:29:39 Like, you don't understand.

00:29:39 --> 00:29:42 It's really important for the video treatment.

00:29:43 --> 00:29:44 I have a vision.

00:29:44 --> 00:29:47 I was like, I need to get to the dance floor.

00:29:47 --> 00:29:47 You're right.

00:29:48 --> 00:29:50 That has to be the conversation.

00:29:50 --> 00:29:54 Like this girl on a podcast, like years from now, is gonna say, I have vision.

00:29:54 --> 00:29:56 I need to make sure I see it through.

00:29:56 --> 00:30:02 So Carice is like, Chloe, maybe we should start thinking of, you know, an alternate storyline for the video.

00:30:02 --> 00:30:04 We probably can't find an ambulance.

00:30:04 --> 00:30:08 I said, Carice, this video is not happening if there's no ambulance.

00:30:09 --> 00:30:11 Like it has, there needs to be an ambulance.

00:30:11 --> 00:30:13 It's like, take us to the dance floor.

00:30:13 --> 00:30:14 Yeah.

00:30:14 --> 00:30:16 And- That's hilarious.

00:30:16 --> 00:30:22 I found one guy who had an ambulance in New Jersey, like a personal ambulance.

00:30:22 --> 00:30:23 Stop it.

00:30:23 --> 00:30:25 That a personal ambulance.

00:30:25 --> 00:30:34 I don't, I guess he rented it out for shoots and things like this, but it wasn't, it was like one guy that owned an ambulance.

00:30:35 --> 00:30:35 No.

00:30:36 --> 00:30:41 And he drove it to us and parked it outside the warehouse.

00:30:41 --> 00:30:44 And he stood there, it was like taking BTS.

00:30:44 --> 00:30:50 It was ambulance in the video with me and my smoke gun coming out the ambulance and the dancers.

00:30:50 --> 00:30:53 And it was so much fun.

00:30:53 --> 00:30:58 And I'm very, very grateful that we found his ambulance because I think it made the video.

00:30:58 --> 00:31:02 I do love that you also had a ton of remixes commissioned for a bunch of these songs.

00:31:02 --> 00:31:05 The Stonebridge remix of Dance for Emergency is so good.

00:31:05 --> 00:31:07 He's iconic.

00:31:07 --> 00:31:07 Yeah.

00:31:07 --> 00:31:08 It's so, so good.

00:31:08 --> 00:31:09 Yeah.

00:31:09 --> 00:31:14 So I guess when you think about this era, are there certain words that come to mind as you look into it?

00:31:14 --> 00:31:39 yeah um lots of metallic okay i feel like i was constantly in metallic silver in everything and i was also djing a lot in new york um because those were very clubby records so i was like very focused on my dj gigs yeah and getting those so i could sing the songs in my like those a lot of yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah

00:31:39 --> 00:31:39 going on.

00:31:40 --> 00:31:42 They had pretty more housey vibes than all the remixes.

00:31:42 --> 00:31:44 So I was singing those during my DJ sets.

00:31:45 --> 00:31:49 And yeah, no, it was a good time.

00:31:50 --> 00:31:52 That was my first EP that I put out.

00:31:52 --> 00:31:57 The next set of singles you released, though, it was very different because the girl that's sitting in front of us right now

00:31:57 --> 00:32:02 people might think, oh my gosh, she's just so pretty and perfect and she's so nice.

00:32:02 --> 00:32:07 But then suddenly you like flip a switch and it was like this bad bitch era.

00:32:07 --> 00:32:09 I'm just so iconic.

00:32:09 --> 00:32:10 Well, bleep it out.

00:32:11 --> 00:32:12 Yeah, no, you can say it again.

00:32:12 --> 00:32:14 Go ahead, say it for the world to hear.

00:32:14 --> 00:32:14 What are you?

00:32:15 --> 00:32:17 Babe, I'm just so iconic.

00:32:18 --> 00:32:20 Yes, own that.

00:32:20 --> 00:32:21 She's like over here like, I guess.

00:32:27 --> 00:32:28 But yeah, Iconic is very bold.

00:32:28 --> 00:32:31 You were in that red, you looked so powerful.

00:32:31 --> 00:32:33 And I was like, hang on, she's in her back right now.

00:32:33 --> 00:32:38 I'm a little nosy, forgive me, but what brought along the tone change?

00:32:38 --> 00:32:39 I was like, is it an ex?

00:32:39 --> 00:32:40 Who did it?

00:32:40 --> 00:32:43 Was it like some, maybe you're getting your lick back against your haters, who knows?

00:32:43 --> 00:32:48 But oopsie daisy, famous, shut up, featuring Flyanna Boss.

00:32:48 --> 00:32:51 So it was just like, you had a lot of like, you were in your back, okay?

00:32:52 --> 00:32:52 You were in it.

00:32:52 --> 00:32:53 I was.

00:32:55 --> 00:32:58 And you know what's really funny is that I was...

00:33:14 --> 00:33:23 Now, you know, I guess I wrote those records before I met my current boyfriend because when I was putting out those records, I was completely falling in love with this guy.

00:33:23 --> 00:33:27 I was putting out all of these songs, like, shut up.

00:33:27 --> 00:33:28 Yes.

00:33:28 --> 00:33:31 Oopsie daisy, I slipped into your Mercedes.

00:33:31 --> 00:33:31 Right, right.

00:33:32 --> 00:33:33 I can make it famous.

00:33:33 --> 00:33:35 Like, right, you were talking all your mess.

00:33:35 --> 00:33:40 Yes, I was giving hot girl, bad bitch, I don't care about guys.

00:33:40 --> 00:33:42 Like, don't talk to me.

00:33:43 --> 00:33:46 And I was fully like in love with this guy.

00:33:46 --> 00:33:51 But what started it is I went to Switzerland for a songwriting camp.

00:33:52 --> 00:33:56 And I wrote Iconic and Sleepless Nights in the same day.

00:33:56 --> 00:33:57 Stop your line.

00:33:57 --> 00:33:58 There's no way.

00:33:58 --> 00:33:59 Nice.

00:33:59 --> 00:34:01 It's amazing.

00:34:01 --> 00:34:02 So it was a camp.

00:34:02 --> 00:34:04 So there were multiple producers.

00:34:05 --> 00:34:06 And we would switch.

00:34:07 --> 00:34:08 Like there were different rooms.

00:34:08 --> 00:34:12 So we would switch and play turns and play.

00:34:12 --> 00:34:15 One producer had a very, like, tech house sensibility.

00:34:16 --> 00:34:21 So I was in this session with him and this writer from Denmark, Helen.

00:34:21 --> 00:34:26 And he was playing this, like, really cool tech house beat, the one you hear of Iconic.

00:34:27 --> 00:34:28 And...

00:34:28 --> 00:34:35 I was going, na-na-na, na-na-na-na-na-na, iconic, na-na-na, iconic, na-na-na.

00:34:35 --> 00:34:38 And with the song, we literally wrote it in 20 minutes.

00:34:38 --> 00:34:38 Nice.

00:34:38 --> 00:34:43 So I could be so completely fierce and it comes out of nowhere.

00:34:44 --> 00:34:44 And then I just...

00:34:45 --> 00:34:48 Sit down and play a beautiful ballad and get all.

00:34:49 --> 00:34:50 And I love doing that.

00:34:50 --> 00:34:52 But it confuses so many people.

00:34:53 --> 00:34:57 And that's been one of my most biggest challenges my whole life.

00:34:57 --> 00:35:00 You know, in the music industry, people like to put you in a box.

00:35:00 --> 00:35:00 Niche you down.

00:35:00 --> 00:35:07 And niche you down and say, if you're ever going to be successful, you got to like stick to your niche and rinse it and repeat it.

00:35:08 --> 00:35:13 And it's always been a challenge because I like to write many different things.

00:35:13 --> 00:35:15 I feel like I am these different people.

00:35:17 --> 00:35:21 So Iconic wrote that and what made me release it.

00:35:21 --> 00:35:24 So I came back from Switzerland and I had the song

00:35:25 --> 00:35:31 And I started playing it for friends, for like marketing people, for music people.

00:35:31 --> 00:35:34 I started playing that and other songs I was writing.

00:35:34 --> 00:35:37 And everyone said, iconic is so catchy.

00:35:37 --> 00:35:39 Like it's so catchy.

00:35:39 --> 00:35:44 And I'm like, well, I don't want to do this, but maybe I will put out a song for TikTok.

00:35:45 --> 00:35:48 Still waiting for that viral moment of that song.

00:35:49 --> 00:35:52 But I put it out and I went with it.

00:35:52 --> 00:35:52 And then...

00:35:54 --> 00:35:56 I think I put out Oops Daisy after that.

00:35:57 --> 00:35:57 Oh, yeah.

00:35:58 --> 00:35:59 That's my favorite, I think, of these.

00:36:00 --> 00:36:03 And the chair choreo in the Shut Up video.

00:36:03 --> 00:36:03 Oh, yeah.

00:36:04 --> 00:36:05 Yeah.

00:36:05 --> 00:36:06 That was really good.

00:36:06 --> 00:36:06 Girl.

00:36:06 --> 00:36:07 Also, Christopher.

00:36:08 --> 00:36:08 Amazing.

00:36:08 --> 00:36:09 Well, that song.

00:36:09 --> 00:36:10 Oh, my God.

00:36:11 --> 00:36:12 Everything has a different story.

00:36:13 --> 00:36:14 As it shows up.

00:36:14 --> 00:36:14 It's a different story.

00:36:14 --> 00:36:18 It's all like, I built literally an album around one song.

00:36:18 --> 00:36:19 Yeah.

00:36:20 --> 00:36:23 I mean, the work of doing an album is literally I put into one song.

00:36:23 --> 00:36:25 That's so funny.

00:36:25 --> 00:36:36 So Shut Up, I wrote in New York City with Jeremy and Henry at this incredible studio on 109th Street that they're engineers, producers at, where Madonna just recorded her new record.

00:36:36 --> 00:36:37 Oh.

00:36:37 --> 00:36:41 And I was listening to a lot of...

00:36:42 --> 00:36:47 Y2K, Timberland, Nelly Furtado, Pussycat Dolls.

00:36:47 --> 00:36:49 And I'm like, I want to write a song like this.

00:36:50 --> 00:36:59 So we went into the session and they started making, Jeremy started making this sick beat and we wrote, shut up.

00:36:59 --> 00:37:01 Da da da da da da da da.

00:37:02 --> 00:37:04 He had that, oh no, no, no, no.

00:37:04 --> 00:37:05 This is how it started.

00:37:06 --> 00:37:11 I had this melody where I go, ha ha ha.

00:37:14 --> 00:37:15 And then I stacked it.

00:37:15 --> 00:37:15 Yeah.

00:37:16 --> 00:37:18 And it had this whole thing.

00:37:18 --> 00:37:22 And then we layered that beat under that.

00:37:22 --> 00:37:25 And I'm like, this is so giving Pussycat Dolls.

00:37:25 --> 00:37:30 So like the choreo and everything had to give that as well.

00:37:30 --> 00:37:33 So yes, let's talk about some of these recent singles.

00:37:33 --> 00:37:38 You did mention you were going in a direction that was taking you to the Princess of the Night album.

00:37:38 --> 00:37:39 Yes.

00:37:39 --> 00:37:41 And you have released a few singles from this era.

00:37:41 --> 00:37:43 One that you mentioned is Sleepless Night.

00:37:43 --> 00:37:44 Yes.

00:37:44 --> 00:37:45 We love.

00:37:45 --> 00:37:46 Love her down.

00:37:46 --> 00:37:48 It's so good.

00:37:48 --> 00:37:52 I love songs that start off as kind of a ballad and then turn into a dance banger.

00:37:53 --> 00:37:54 And then the video.

00:37:54 --> 00:37:56 That's why I found you.

00:37:56 --> 00:37:57 Oh, my gosh.

00:37:57 --> 00:37:57 I didn't know.

00:37:57 --> 00:37:59 Like, your team reached out to us.

00:37:59 --> 00:37:59 Yeah.

00:37:59 --> 00:37:59 Right?

00:38:00 --> 00:38:01 And I was like, why do I know her?

00:38:03 --> 00:38:05 skating and I was like, she's beautiful.

00:38:05 --> 00:38:06 Like, like, tap, tap, tap.

00:38:06 --> 00:38:10 Didn't know it was you, again, it's one of those things where it's just like, if it's meant to happen, it's gonna freaking happen.

00:38:10 --> 00:38:13 But like, dude, I was like, no one's doing this.

00:38:13 --> 00:38:14 She's brilliant.

00:38:14 --> 00:38:17 But girl, Sailor Moon, okay, hearts on ice.

00:38:17 --> 00:38:21 It's like, girl, it's Elsa skating.

00:38:21 --> 00:38:23 Not even, it's Anna skating.

00:38:23 --> 00:38:24 And then she sings.

00:38:25 --> 00:38:26 It sounds like it belongs on Eurovision.

00:38:27 --> 00:38:27 Yeah.

00:38:28 --> 00:38:28 Which is not bad.

00:38:28 --> 00:38:30 That's my dream, to go to Eurovision.

00:38:34 --> 00:38:40 Yeah, no, because then I heard that song, like listening to it, both the original and the acoustic version.

00:38:40 --> 00:38:42 And the effort.

00:38:42 --> 00:38:45 First of all, you traveled like the you and the song travel.

00:38:45 --> 00:38:46 Oh, yeah.

00:38:46 --> 00:38:49 So could you please just tell us the whole creative process behind the video, the song, all of it?

00:38:50 --> 00:38:50 Because you started earlier.

00:38:50 --> 00:38:51 Oh, yeah.

00:38:51 --> 00:38:52 Finish now.

00:38:52 --> 00:38:52 Okay.

00:38:53 --> 00:38:56 So this song, yes, was a crazy journey.

00:38:58 --> 00:39:01 Song started in my piano in New York, brought it to...

00:39:02 --> 00:39:27 Switzerland writing camp wrote it brought it back to New York sent it to tour in LA he produced it then got live strings flew to Nashville to get a 16 piece live string recording yeah um and then brought it back to New York

00:39:28 --> 00:39:28 Finished.

00:39:29 --> 00:39:29 Mix Master.

00:39:29 --> 00:39:38 Okay, this is the song that I've been waiting for to do my dream of doing a music video where I'm figure skating.

00:39:38 --> 00:39:39 Yes.

00:39:39 --> 00:39:39 Yeah.

00:39:40 --> 00:39:42 Because my whole life and...

00:39:44 --> 00:40:09 career of figure skating is not going to waste literally and it was always a dream to incorporate ice skating into my music yeah so um i met a videographer through a mutual artist friend he was doing her videos in la and and i thought they were really cool and then i he was visiting new york and he dm'd me saying let's meet for coffee i was like of course found out he's a pro figure skater

00:40:10 --> 00:40:18 He skated for 11 years touring the world on different ice shows, competitive.

00:40:18 --> 00:40:19 He's from Ukraine originally.

00:40:20 --> 00:40:20 Oh, my gosh.

00:40:21 --> 00:40:24 On skates, age three, professional.

00:40:24 --> 00:40:24 Yeah.

00:40:25 --> 00:40:30 And I said, wow, we have a lot in common with the ice skating, but then took a different direction.

00:40:30 --> 00:40:33 And we're both in the arts.

00:40:34 --> 00:40:37 So I told him I had this idea for a music video.

00:40:38 --> 00:40:41 I want to do it on a frozen lake, not a normal ice skating rink.

00:40:41 --> 00:40:42 Yeah.

00:40:42 --> 00:40:44 And he said, girl, you're crazy.

00:40:44 --> 00:40:47 And I said, no, no, no, it's possible.

00:40:48 --> 00:40:50 Like, I see all these people skating on frozen lakes.

00:40:50 --> 00:40:52 Why can't we shoot there?

00:40:52 --> 00:40:56 And he started thinking about logistics and this and that.

00:40:56 --> 00:40:58 He said, OK, well, my friend Vanessa.

00:40:59 --> 00:41:01 She skates on lots of frozen lakes.

00:41:02 --> 00:41:06 So let me reach out to her and see if this could even be possible.

00:41:06 --> 00:41:08 Because I wanted to release it soon-ish.

00:41:08 --> 00:41:09 Yeah, yeah.

00:41:09 --> 00:41:12 So I said, I want to do it soon.

00:41:12 --> 00:41:15 And he's like, well, lakes don't freeze when you tell them to.

00:41:17 --> 00:41:23 So Vanessa said that she has a tracker on like all of the best frozen lakes.

00:41:23 --> 00:41:30 She said, Canada, this place has the most frozen lakes in the shortest, in the smallest amount of space.

00:41:30 --> 00:41:32 That's insane, dude.

00:41:32 --> 00:41:32 Wow.

00:41:32 --> 00:41:35 She said the frozen lakes are very specific because...

00:41:36 --> 00:41:44 There's a certain point at which they're about to freeze over and you have to catch them right after they freeze over or get thick enough.

00:41:45 --> 00:41:47 They freeze and then until they're thick enough.

00:41:47 --> 00:41:47 Yeah.

00:41:47 --> 00:41:55 But then you can't wait until it snows because if it snows once, then there's snow on the ice and you have to like remove it.

00:41:55 --> 00:41:57 And you don't want that.

00:41:57 --> 00:41:59 You want it to like look normal.

00:41:59 --> 00:41:59 Yeah.

00:42:00 --> 00:42:03 So Vanessa said, OK, let's do these dates.

00:42:03 --> 00:42:07 I know my friends told me there's frozen lakes happening.

00:42:08 --> 00:42:08 We're going to go.

00:42:08 --> 00:42:11 We're going to go find a frozen, a good frozen lake.

00:42:11 --> 00:42:13 And the conditions changed day to day.

00:42:13 --> 00:42:18 The lake we chose and was great for us and was perfect, smooth.

00:42:18 --> 00:42:27 The next day they went and it was miserable, bumpy, harsh, rough, snow covered.

00:42:28 --> 00:42:28 Not good.

00:42:28 --> 00:42:31 So it was literally a 24-hour difference.

00:42:32 --> 00:42:32 And...

00:42:33 --> 00:42:35 Playing with the elements, girl.

00:42:35 --> 00:42:36 And it was so crazy.

00:42:36 --> 00:42:38 I had to get a safety instructor.

00:42:38 --> 00:42:39 This woman, Michelle, came in.

00:42:39 --> 00:42:40 I saw it in the credits.

00:42:40 --> 00:42:43 I was like, oh, it makes sense because the frostbite and things that could happen.

00:42:43 --> 00:42:44 Well, no, you could fall through the lake.

00:42:44 --> 00:42:45 That's the worst thing.

00:42:45 --> 00:42:46 You're like, go ahead, go ahead.

00:42:47 --> 00:42:48 You could die.

00:42:48 --> 00:42:49 Yeah.

00:42:49 --> 00:42:49 Yeah.

00:42:50 --> 00:42:50 You know what?

00:42:50 --> 00:42:51 Worth it.

00:42:51 --> 00:42:52 Because that video is beautiful.

00:42:52 --> 00:42:52 Girl.

00:42:52 --> 00:42:53 Yeah.

00:42:53 --> 00:42:54 It was worth it.

00:42:54 --> 00:42:55 It was minus 25 degrees.

00:42:55 --> 00:42:56 Your nose was so pink.

00:42:56 --> 00:42:58 I was like, it was so cute though.

00:42:58 --> 00:42:59 It was so cold.

00:42:59 --> 00:42:59 It was honey.

00:42:59 --> 00:43:00 It was so cute.

00:43:00 --> 00:43:00 It was so cold.

00:43:02 --> 00:43:21 the most crazy experience of my life honestly it was four days we were shooting and then I said no I need to get a white piano onto a frozen lake and Max was like can we it was a small place in Canada where are we going to find a white piano to put on a frozen lake

00:43:22 --> 00:43:32 I found a guy who had a white keyboard shell that looked like a mini grand piano with a keyboard inside who lived two hours away and drove it.

00:43:32 --> 00:43:32 Nice.

00:43:32 --> 00:43:32 Nice.

00:43:33 --> 00:43:34 You know what?

00:43:34 --> 00:43:35 Again, whatever you want, honey.

00:43:35 --> 00:43:36 Just, I want it.

00:43:37 --> 00:43:37 I love this for you.

00:43:37 --> 00:43:38 Oh my, girl.

00:43:38 --> 00:43:40 I try to make it happen.

00:43:40 --> 00:43:40 That song.

00:43:40 --> 00:43:42 Okay, we can go on and on for it.

00:43:42 --> 00:43:45 Like, oh, it's so frustrating because I love to talk about the whole show.

00:43:45 --> 00:43:47 But you do have other songs, though.

00:43:47 --> 00:43:48 Yes.

00:43:48 --> 00:43:49 Sleepless Nice is amazing.

00:43:49 --> 00:43:50 You look amazing.

00:43:50 --> 00:43:51 You sound amazing on it.

00:43:51 --> 00:43:54 But we also have Middleman and Feel the Love.

00:43:54 --> 00:43:55 And Middleman...

00:43:56 --> 00:43:57 Family dynamics.

00:43:57 --> 00:44:03 Can you just, it's very interesting because I think for a lot of people, they're listening to this interview, we're all joking about like, if you want it, you can have it.

00:44:03 --> 00:44:06 Like I went to NYU, like people would think you'd have it easy.

00:44:07 --> 00:44:11 But what would you say to those who think that perfection comes with privilege?

00:44:17 --> 00:44:21 Being a perfectionist, I am a perfectionist, and it's a blessing and a curse.

00:44:23 --> 00:44:30 So, I mean, I wrote Middleman about me being the middle person between my parents.

00:44:30 --> 00:44:31 Yeah.

00:44:31 --> 00:44:35 So, as I've said, you know, like, I'm very close with my parents, and they support me so much.

00:44:36 --> 00:44:38 Are you an only child, by the way?

00:44:38 --> 00:44:39 I have an older half-sister.

00:44:39 --> 00:44:39 Okay.

00:44:39 --> 00:44:41 But she's, like, a lot older than me.

00:44:41 --> 00:44:42 Yes, Anne.

00:44:42 --> 00:44:45 So, it was kind of growing up, I was...

00:44:46 --> 00:44:51 Pretty much an only child in the house because she was off in college and stuff.

00:44:51 --> 00:44:56 So my parents, we're like a support unit for each other.

00:44:57 --> 00:44:58 And they turn to me.

00:44:58 --> 00:44:59 Oh, girl.

00:44:59 --> 00:45:00 Yeah, no, I get it.

00:45:00 --> 00:45:01 Constantly.

00:45:01 --> 00:45:02 Right.

00:45:03 --> 00:45:05 And I'm constantly put in the middle.

00:45:05 --> 00:45:05 Right.

00:45:05 --> 00:45:07 And still constantly.

00:45:07 --> 00:45:07 Yeah.

00:45:08 --> 00:45:12 Today in tomorrow, I'm still a middleman.

00:45:12 --> 00:45:14 I think I will forever be a middleman.

00:45:14 --> 00:45:14 Forever, girl, yeah.

00:45:15 --> 00:45:29 And I feel that, you know, it kind of is a relatable thing how when you're a child of someone and they sometimes get in arguments and they put you in the middle to help them get through their stuff.

00:45:29 --> 00:45:29 Yeah.

00:45:30 --> 00:45:31 Speak.

00:45:31 --> 00:45:32 Calm down, Mommy.

00:45:32 --> 00:45:32 Tell.

00:45:33 --> 00:45:34 Yeah.

00:45:35 --> 00:45:38 So and because I'm so close with them, it's a lot sometimes.

00:45:39 --> 00:45:40 And of course, feel the love.

00:45:40 --> 00:45:42 We get that sax solo.

00:45:42 --> 00:45:44 You've mentioned disco quite a few times.

00:45:44 --> 00:45:46 That song is so much fun.

00:45:46 --> 00:45:47 Oh, yeah.

00:45:47 --> 00:45:48 So fun.

00:45:48 --> 00:45:48 I love that song.

00:45:48 --> 00:45:50 And your mom was in the video playing sax.

00:45:50 --> 00:45:53 But I know you had the gentleman when we came to see you.

00:45:53 --> 00:45:53 Yes.

00:45:53 --> 00:45:54 Yeah.

00:45:54 --> 00:45:54 Michael.

00:45:54 --> 00:45:55 Michael.

00:45:55 --> 00:45:55 Yeah.

00:45:55 --> 00:45:56 Love that sax solo.

00:45:57 --> 00:45:57 Super.

00:45:57 --> 00:45:58 You are so in your bag.

00:46:04 --> 00:46:05 Here's the story of the sax and my mom.

00:46:05 --> 00:46:09 My mom grew up playing sax and played sax all over her 20s.

00:46:09 --> 00:46:12 She didn't play it for the last 25 years.

00:46:12 --> 00:46:12 Oh, wow.

00:46:13 --> 00:46:19 And I wrote this song and I said, Mom, I have this song and it has sax in it.

00:46:19 --> 00:46:22 And I'm getting Michael to do the sax, but you have to learn how to play it.

00:46:22 --> 00:46:29 And you need to come on stage with me and get it under your fingers and bring it.

00:46:29 --> 00:46:32 So she started, she brought out her sax and started playing.

00:46:33 --> 00:46:35 practicing because how cool would that be?

00:46:36 --> 00:46:36 Look at you reviving her.

00:46:36 --> 00:46:39 So she was reviving in time for Mercury Lounge, but she'll be ready for the next one.

00:46:39 --> 00:46:40 Nice.

00:46:41 --> 00:46:45 But yeah, Feel the Love, such a feel-good record.

00:46:45 --> 00:46:45 It is.

00:46:45 --> 00:46:52 You know, it sounds cliche, Feel the Love, but it's, you know, the world...

00:46:54 --> 00:46:57 There's so much darkness and so much negativity.

00:46:57 --> 00:47:03 And I just want to bring light and fun and love into the world.

00:47:04 --> 00:47:06 And as I said, yeah, make it an escape.

00:47:07 --> 00:47:09 And if everyone just felt a little bit more love.

00:47:10 --> 00:47:10 Girl.

00:47:11 --> 00:47:11 Yes.

00:47:11 --> 00:47:13 I mean, we went to your life.

00:47:13 --> 00:47:14 We've been talking about you seeing you live.

00:47:15 --> 00:47:16 But the love thing.

00:47:16 --> 00:47:18 Again, I know I keep comparing you to like superheroes.

00:47:18 --> 00:47:20 But it was very like Blossom.

00:47:20 --> 00:47:21 Love makes the world go around.

00:47:22 --> 00:47:22 Yes.

00:47:22 --> 00:47:23 You are that.

00:47:23 --> 00:47:24 We felt it.

00:47:24 --> 00:47:25 Yeah.

00:47:25 --> 00:47:27 We had no clue who the heck you were, really.

00:47:27 --> 00:47:28 I was like, oh, I've seen her as ice skate.

00:47:28 --> 00:47:30 I know her, I guess.

00:47:30 --> 00:47:31 But like, we feel it.

00:47:31 --> 00:47:34 Like the covers that you did for the show were amazing.

00:47:34 --> 00:47:35 Oh, thank you.

00:47:35 --> 00:47:36 You had this bubble wand.

00:47:36 --> 00:47:37 Yeah, I've got my bubble wand.

00:47:37 --> 00:47:39 It was so magical, girl.

00:47:39 --> 00:47:41 And it was so like genuine.

00:47:41 --> 00:47:46 And then you sat down and just sang your face off with a song that, was it Born the Wrong Time?

00:47:46 --> 00:47:46 Oh.

00:47:46 --> 00:47:47 Born too late.

00:47:47 --> 00:47:47 Born too late.

00:47:48 --> 00:47:50 Girl, girl.

00:47:50 --> 00:47:54 But you're telling us, right off camera, you were saying that you're changing your whole thing.

00:47:54 --> 00:47:55 Yeah.

00:47:55 --> 00:48:00 So can you quickly like, or girl, explain what do you mean?

00:48:00 --> 00:48:00 Yeah.

00:48:00 --> 00:48:05 So are we not getting all the lovely, amazingness that we've been talking about?

00:48:05 --> 00:48:07 Or are you just like, hey, this is a capsule.

00:48:07 --> 00:48:08 Enjoy it.

00:48:08 --> 00:48:09 Bye.

00:48:09 --> 00:48:09 What's going on?

00:48:11 --> 00:48:39 going on so i was writing an album um yes called princess of the night and i have a song called princess of the night that compensates that whole record and iconic famous oopsie daisy it was very like 2000 very 2010s nostalgic dark dance pop like princess of the night is a very like gothic dance dark pop song still like club 2010s sure um

00:48:41 --> 00:48:46 And I was, I had maybe nine songs ready for that record.

00:48:46 --> 00:49:00 And then I, I don't know what exactly sparked it, but I got really inspired from Feel the Love and going on tour.

00:49:01 --> 00:49:05 And I was writing music before the tour.

00:49:05 --> 00:49:09 And I did one session where I wrote this song called Born Too Late.

00:49:09 --> 00:49:10 Yeah.

00:49:10 --> 00:49:13 And I was like, I feel like I just don't fit in in this world.

00:49:14 --> 00:49:15 Like, I don't like that.

00:49:15 --> 00:49:17 People don't know how to talk to each other.

00:49:18 --> 00:49:22 People don't really like dance at concerts anymore.

00:49:22 --> 00:49:24 They're just filming the whole thing.

00:49:25 --> 00:49:33 And no one, you know, there's really lack of people living in the moment because of the device we have on us constantly.

00:49:33 --> 00:49:35 We can use it as an escape from the moment.

00:49:35 --> 00:49:35 Right.

00:49:36 --> 00:49:37 And I, I,

00:49:38 --> 00:49:59 glorify my mind those studio 54 disco days and i constantly like watch videos from live performances back then and just like the whole aesthetic and how everyone was just so in the moment and enjoying and having fun i'm like this is so unfair

00:50:01 --> 00:50:06 Like I get genuinely upset about my generation.

00:50:06 --> 00:50:08 I'm like, what the hell?

00:50:08 --> 00:50:09 That's so bad, girl.

00:50:09 --> 00:50:09 That's valid.

00:50:10 --> 00:50:11 I'm born too late.

00:50:11 --> 00:50:12 No, I get it.

00:50:12 --> 00:50:16 So, because I am Gen Z, but as you said, I'm an old soul.

00:50:16 --> 00:50:16 Yeah, girl.

00:50:16 --> 00:50:19 I feel like an old soul.

00:50:19 --> 00:50:26 And this whole message of peace and love in the 70s, I mean, that's what disco and the 70s were about.

00:50:26 --> 00:50:27 Peace and love.

00:50:27 --> 00:50:30 And that's, I feel like who I am as a person, because I just want to...

00:50:31 --> 00:50:31 I want to have fun.

00:50:32 --> 00:50:33 I want to enjoy.

00:50:33 --> 00:50:33 Yeah.

00:50:33 --> 00:50:35 Like ignore all the darkness.

00:50:35 --> 00:50:36 It does not belong.

00:50:36 --> 00:50:37 It does not exist.

00:50:37 --> 00:50:43 We're just going to make a bubble and create an escape because art, that's what art is, is an escape.

00:50:43 --> 00:50:46 If you want to go escape it and like get really into it.

00:50:46 --> 00:50:48 And that's your escape to like talk about it.

00:50:49 --> 00:50:49 Cool.

00:50:49 --> 00:50:52 I'm like, no, make that wall.

00:50:52 --> 00:50:54 Right, right.

00:50:54 --> 00:50:56 I love maybe that's because I don't like to do.

00:50:56 --> 00:50:57 I'm not confrontational.

00:50:58 --> 00:51:24 you know what and that's okay that's why your music is so like it feels honest and it's fun as well because you you balance that really well so it doesn't feel like it's superficial no it feels not yeah it feels good girl um yeah because i mean yeah and that's what i made they made a big thing about this year i mean releasing sleepless nights and middleman those were two way more vulnerable records than like i've done in a while and i said i'm gonna be more vulnerable

00:51:29 --> 00:51:32 I've been writing lots of disco.

00:51:32 --> 00:51:33 Well, not even.

00:51:33 --> 00:51:35 I've been writing lots of great songs.

00:51:35 --> 00:51:36 Yeah.

00:51:36 --> 00:51:40 That have this kind of disco elements to them.

00:51:40 --> 00:51:43 They're not really produced out yet.

00:51:43 --> 00:51:46 So I'm going to Sweden in two weeks.

00:51:46 --> 00:51:47 Okay.

00:51:47 --> 00:51:51 Because I've been trying to work with my people in America.

00:51:52 --> 00:51:54 And they're not getting the disco.

00:51:57 --> 00:51:57 It's like, I love you.

00:51:58 --> 00:51:59 I have to go.

00:51:59 --> 00:52:03 I need to go to the place of the disco with Abba.

00:52:03 --> 00:52:04 And I mean, just so.

00:52:04 --> 00:52:08 Do you know the group who I just discovered?

00:52:08 --> 00:52:10 And I knew their biggest song, Alcazar.

00:52:11 --> 00:52:11 Oh, yeah.

00:52:11 --> 00:52:12 Oh, my gosh.

00:52:13 --> 00:52:13 Girl.

00:52:14 --> 00:52:14 Good.

00:52:15 --> 00:52:15 So good.

00:52:15 --> 00:52:15 Oh.

00:52:16 --> 00:52:20 Okay, listen, if you are a fan of any of these people, you have to listen.

00:52:20 --> 00:52:24 There was a Swedish group in the early 2000s.

00:52:25 --> 00:52:28 It lasted like nine years, but they made, I think, three records.

00:52:28 --> 00:52:31 And they were like a 2000s version of ABBA.

00:52:32 --> 00:52:36 Even their cover photo had the foreheads.

00:52:36 --> 00:52:47 And the songs, they interpolated Mal Rogers' song, Spacer, which he produced for this artist, Sheila.

00:52:48 --> 00:52:52 And all of those Mal Rogers records, the Chic records, I grew up on.

00:52:52 --> 00:52:54 I know every single word.

00:52:54 --> 00:52:55 I play in my sets.

00:52:55 --> 00:52:57 I DJ all those songs, the Gloria Gaynor songs.

00:52:58 --> 00:53:03 I know that all that music and I think internally pulls so much inspo from it.

00:53:04 --> 00:53:08 So I'm like, wow, took me this long to get here.

00:53:10 --> 00:53:11 Okay, y'all, listen.
